When you press the deticated hardware "message" key,
the messages pop up, press again on the key to switch
trough the accounts.

Discovered it by accident... Nice. (Sounds
like Onslow from Keeping Up Appeareance)

another, more right handed, one handed approch is you can press the directional key, left and right.

Excellent little tip. Thanks

That's got to be one of the best tips so far. Fan-bl**dy-tastic.
My other favourite is holding the connections button in to go to/from vibrate mode.
Thanks!

Do you have the HTC Wizard ? Click here !

Please help a possible future HTC Wizard owner ! I want to be part of the club ! It's as easy as clicking "reply":
I have tried the Treo and I appreciate it's one-handed use.
Since there is no "windows" and "ok" buttons on the HTC Wizard, I assume people will remap them (either to Messages, IExplorer, or the Send button)
Do you feel that you can navigate with one hand without worrying about dropping it, since your thumb is at the bottom instead of the middle ?
If you remapped your buttons, you'd have to click on one button at the top for Start, then slide your thumb back down to select the menu item, then slide your thumb back up to click OK every time you need to close a window... it seems like a work-out !
How do you dial a number you've never dialed before when you can't look at the screen ?
I love the Treo's form factor, but the old OS, lack of multi-tasking, lack of real bluetooth and WiFi are holding me back...
Please enlighten me !

Yup

I remapped the Voice Button (and set Voice Command to the IE button) and the Comm Manager button to start menu.

I dropped it yesterday because someone bumped into me (fortunately the device survived with only a few scratches), so I don't walk around using it onehanded anymore. I hold it with one hand and push the buttons with the other. no stylus needed.

I haven't had a problem, but as I said above, now I use both hands for safety.
How do you dial a number you've never dialed before when you can't look at the screen ?
You can't Or you can used Voice Command (sold separately) to say "Dial" then the number

Go the Wizard!! I saw a Treo 650 in the shops yesterday, and had a hold (had no battery so I couldn't play) and the keyboard on the Wizard is much better, but the Treo's kb can be used onehanded farely easiler. It definately beats the Wizard in onehandedness, but I would pick the Wizard because of the reasons you stated, plus the use of Windows Mobile (Palm is too simple).
Please enlighten me !
You should now feel (somewhat) enlightened!

press & hold bindings to HW buttons?

What i'd like to do is assign more than 1 binding to the outlook button.
Exactly the same as the "voice dial" one has as standard (press for voice dial, hold for voice memo)
What i want is (on the mail/outlook/text button) press to open outlook, hold to start new text message.
Is there a reg key to change to allow this dual use?
If not (and i'd rather not add more software to map buttons) what software will allow this? Multipress isn't really an option, as pressing the button again now will cycle through the different text settings (sms, mms, e-mail etc) and put you in whatever folder you were in last (inbox, outbox etc)
EDIT:
While i would still like to be able to do this, thanx to vijay555 who's phone tools 2 lets me start a blank sms from a today screen .lnk file
The only way to do it is using Vito Button mapper.
Button mapper supports macros as well.

Have you read the thread about putting VJSMS on the softkeys, to start an sms straight from that key..
I'll have another related release that you'll hopefully like, coming soon.

Vito Button Mapper works here, but after a soft reset I get a popup message saying a certificate is missing.
Also, after installation my backlight was turned off. Went to settings and restored it and all works fine now (also after a reset... only problem is the popup)
Vito Button Mapper screwed up my softkeys.
Only in the 'Today Screen' however thats were a couple of my most used buttons were.
Now they don't work and sometimes change?
I would urge you NOT TO USE if you want to use soft keys in Today screen.
Robin
Soft keys can be configurated in the app, that is why you lost them for now...
Reconfig them:
Start -> Settings -> Buttons
Configuration drop down -> Today
Top 2 entries: Left softkey & Right softkey
Well yours must be different to mine.
When I open buttons the only choices I have are for the 5 hardware buttons.
No other choices are available????????

Does ur space button click twice when pressed in the center?

Hi all,
I need some urgent feedback from you good folks as I have been given until tomorrow to decide whether to send back my T-Mobile MDA Vario.
On the slide out keyboard, if I press the space/sym button lightly in the center it clicks once and if i press slightly harder it clicks a second time...
Is this meant to happen? Does anybody elses do this?
Haris
PS. If I press the button on either side there is only one click
Mine makes a sound like it's clicking twice but actually only does one click.
Thanks for the prompt reply sunseaker!
When you say 'does' one click, do you mean in the software? So you only get 1 space in Word even though you're hearing/feeling 2 clicks?
Yeah,so do I.I feel it was twice. But actually,it's only one space appeared in word.
That's what's happening with me, you can feel two clicks in the center but one if you press on either side, just one is showing in word.
So all Wizard Keyboards behave like this? At first I thought it may be something like a two function button ie. light press for normal space harder press for something else.
I looked in the manual for some kind of explanation but there's no mention of it...
If they really are all like this (keep the feedback coming pls) don't people find it really annoying to feel a double click happening on a frequently used button when all the other buttons function normally? (ie. click once)
The reason you get two clicks is because there's two of those little contacts below the space key - the reason for that, in turn, is that the key is pretty wide. These two contacts are on the same 'paths', though, so there's no differentiating a spacebar press on the left from one on the right.
The reason you only get 1 space is because, normally, if you press in the center in such a way that you happen to 'click' both left and right, it will be in such a short interval that the repeat is ignored. Try pressing any other key, such as a letter key, really fast (so not 'click click', but rather 'c-click') twice - it will also only enter the letter once.
It's not too annoying for me, as I either press it on the left or on the right, depending on which thumb happens to be nearest the key
Cheers Ze!
I thought it might be something to do with 2 contacts under the space bar.
Since this is not a fault (design fault maybe ) I'm happy to aim my thumbs to the corners and will rest assured that I don't have a dodgy Vario
Thanks to all that replied - I can keep my new toy!

Can I assign the Home button with the startmenu?

Hello,
I don't like this Home button on the Touch HD. I can get back to the today screen with the normal End Call button.
I am missing a startmenu button which I got used to over the last years. And the startmenu on this display is so far away from my thumb, that it makes one handed usage difficult.
Is there an easy way to reassign the Home buttion to the startmenu? The default Settings-->Buttons dialog offers only one long press customization. Can I enable the other buttons to get changed there?
Use aebuttons or mobilemagic, search a little for
A tool to change the buttons is AEButton Plus.
But the home key cannot be changed so far.
I concur with AE Button plus not being able to assign/reassign the home button
This is bad.
So we have to wait for a solution. I hope someone works on this.
The end call button and the home button are redundant.
Why have 2 buttons that primarily do the same thing? I know that the home button takes you to the main screen during a call where as pressing the end call will end it. But you could easily press the on-screen end call button, thus freeing up the home button to something more useful or customisable.
I guess HTC need to keep thier devices "conventional" looking to avoid scaring off potential pda newcomers!

Which buttons can be assigend by AE Button Plus?

In AE Button Plus I only could assign the two phone buttons. What about the "Home Button", "Back Button", "Calendar" and "Contacts"?
The back button can be assigned. Assign things to the "OK-button" i AE Button Plus to assign it to the back button.
Great! Thank you very much.
Hi, here is a reply on AEB Plus compatibility with the HD direct from the developer:
---------------------------
Hello David,
Thanks, it is always nice to know if you find this utility interesting
As for your question: yes, BPlus is compatible with HD as well as any other PocketPC 2k3 / PocketPC 2k3SE / WM5/WM6/WM6.1 devices.
The problem I know on Touch HD:
- Home key may not be remapped due to driver implementation
- Long keypresses are not detected in BPlus for green/red keys and “back” button (button driver limitation).
- “Back” button corresponds to the “Ok” in button list so you will not need to add it via File->Add key but just re-define “Ok” button instead
- Backlight controlling will work in next BPlus release (should appear this week)
Anyway – just try and install BPlus to check if it will suit your needs before buying. It have very few “demo” mode limitations...
Regards,
Alexander

Don't forget the Volume Buttons (long-press DOES work for those two)
Hi guys,
I played around with AE Buttons for a couple of hous last night and here's my experience:
- Volume up/down - Work like a charm.
- Home buttom - Can't be mapped.
- Back key - Didn't realize it was mapped to the Ok button. I tried it out tonight. Works fine, but I'm not sure what action should I put in the single press configuration to preserve it's normal function. "Ok/Close" a suppose. Can someone confirm, please ?
- Green/Red phone - work fine in single, double and triple press
- Green phone long press is mapped by the driver to a virtual button called "Button 1(Hold)" (It's just at the top of the AE Buttons list) and by default launches the voice dial program (this is defined in the Settings/Personal/Buttons/Program Buttons)
- Red phone long press - This is a tough one. This button can't be captured unless you set "Lock device" in Settings/Personal/Buttons/End key. In this case it generates a key code and you can record it as a new key in AE Buttons. There's a catch though. When you map an action to single press, Lock program is no longer executed. Your selected action is executed, but immediately after that the device goes to the today screen as if you have pressed the Home button.
- Power button - Can't be mapped at all. I wish this was possible. I wanted to make long pressing the power button to soft reset the device directly.
Hope this info is useful. It took me a couple of hours and A LOT of soft resets to try all the possible combinations

I encountered the below problem.
After receiving or making a phone call, the button did not work for around 5 minutes. Instead of move the arrow up or down, it turn the volume up/down. After that the button work again as what I had configured.
Anyone having the same problem?
Regarding the back key. I have this not mapped for one touch, i.e., normal OK operation, and for double press I have it rotate the screen.
I don't like gsen and the gyrator - great apps but I just don't need them always there.

I have this problem too! Any solution to share?
That's weird - I have just tested and all the AEB Plus assignments worked before a call.
After a call the volume assignments I have (1 press = arrow up/down, 2 press = volume up/down, long press up = flash lamp, long press down = resco audio) don't work. All the volume presses just revert to the volume operation.
I also have the back/OK key assigned to screen rotate for double press. This works fine after the call.
So, status now is not working right - I'll wait and see if it fixes itself (!!) with a few minutes.

I found the fix. In AEB + there is a set of options. One of these is the "restore volume slider" - by default this restores volume control to the phone app. It appears not to reset it back after.
I have just turned all these "restore volume slider" options off and now AEB Plus works as it should (or as I expect).
Thanks for the fix!
I shall try it tonite!

I just tried it and it doesn't work. I guess it's a bug and need to be fixed by the developer. Hmmmm, just suprised that no one really notice this bug.
Same bug on volume up. I assigned 1P for standard function and 2P for WiFi toggle. Well after the first or second use, it looses mapping. To have it to work again a soft reset is needed...

I'm glad this is working for some.
But, I got an email from the developer (who is very quick to respond to emails) that said he is aware of a fault with the phone interaction and has not been able to replicate it.
Removing the volume slider option for the phone might work (as it did for me) but it seems that the intermittent fault probably will remain.

Glad that it work for you (so envy, hehehehe) and thanks for the email to the developer.
Wondering why some HTC HD working (removing the volume slider option) and some not (like my case )
