[Q] Newie with a couple of questions?

Got my Desire Z yesterday
Got a couple of questions if someone could answer them for me please?
1) If Wi-Fi is turned on and I browse the web etc, does the phone use the wi-fi (my home wi-fi this is) over the phone network, i.e. so I don't get charged as I'm currently waiting for my contract plan to renew and my free data does not kick in until next month.
2) Is there a way of closing off apps that I have previously opened, or do I need another app to do this as I assume leaving apps running in the background will be a bigger drain on the battery?
3) I have setup a HTC Sense account, does the phone remain connected to this the whole time? (just want to make sure nothing racks up my data usage as I'm not on free data as yet).
Thanks for any info.
Oh, and PS - can anyone recommend some good apps?
If your Wi-fi is on and you are connected to a wireless network, the traffic will go over this network. You can also edit your settings so that the phone doesn't use phone network to update facebook, weather, etc. This goes for all apps and functions, including HTC Sense, email sync, etc.
Task killers are not supposed to be used with Android. You can read more about that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849974
What a good app for you is, depends on what you're looking for. But as for games, I do recommend Angry Birds and Doodle Jump (Santa doodle is just too cute these days )
A couple of must-have apps for me:
ChompSMS - replaces built-in text messaging app
Winamp - media player
Astro File Manager - does so much more than file management
ScoreMobile - real-time updates on sports scores
BuzzBox - RSS reader
Kayak - itinerary manager and travel application
Barcode Scanner
Tim Hortons Finder - for Canadians jonesing for their cup of Timmy's
JuiceDefender -
setCPU - set up CPU profiles for
Battery Graph - tracks drain on battery
TED Mobile
Some games and lighter fare:
Air Control Lite - fun game
Paper Toss
Angry Birds
Hungry Shark
Kobo reader
Aldiko reader
Hope this helps kick you off in the right direction.

You don't need to worry, Android handles this automatically. The app won't be doing anything to drain the battery unless there's something seriously wrong with the app.

You can control how often the phone syncs with your HTC Sense account just like you control the other things is syncs with such as Gmail, Facebook, etc, etc. So you can set those to sync manually so you have more control, and then only go and sync particular things when you need them.
HTCSense.com doesn't work too well for a lot of people at the moment (though you might be lucky), see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849410
Thanks for the replies.
So is there one overall setting to turn the data off or is there a setting within each app, where I can turn it off (just for the time being).
Oh, and one other question is there a way of checking how much battery is remaining apart from the little symbol at the top of the screen? Only got it yesterday and it's showing about a 3rd remaining. Seems to have gone down quickly, although I have probably been fiddling a bit more than what I will do once I "get use to it".
Thanks

Go into Menu->Settings->Accounts & Sync and you'll see all the settings in there. One overall setting to sync automatically or not, and then individual sections for each account where you can sync them manually.

You can also go into Menu->Settings->About Phone->Battery, and if you choose the "Battery Use" section you can see what's been using the battery.
There are loads of extra battery widgets you can install on the Android market, to give you a percentage display. I'm using this one - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=724778

I've installed the "Mobile Network" widget so I can turn data off and on at will.

Galaxy note text based browser, not mobile optimised pages

1) Looking for a web browser that can surf with images, and flash animations turned off while surfing to decrease my bandwidth.
2) If that browser can also load pages not optimised for mobile browsing but real PC type browsing, it would be great. I mean, I do not want to have mobile pages at all, just should load real web pages and should not give away that I am using a mobile. I do not like mobile optimised pages at all.
Thanks in advance
The best 2 browsers in my opinion is OPERA BROWSER and DOLPHIN HD. You can disable flash player in the settings and use desktop profile on both browsers.
thanks for the answer.
There I have another question, a couple of years ago I used a certain canadian company phone with a certain push email service, tested it also with google push email free service. I was able to read all my google emails with very little bandwidth usage, of course all in text only. Is there an application for Gnote to make this possible for me?
When I am in 'minimalist' mode, I browse with opera mobile, graphics off, flash browsing off, with the 'green on black' mod to conserve battery life.
Almost all browsers allow you to disable graphics/flash, although not that many have a nice 'flip the colors' to get rid rid of the white web backgrounds that drain your battery hard.

[Q] How do I disable Google+ video auto backup

I know I can disable the Auto Backup feature all together, but can I keep the photo auto backup on and disable video backup only?
Anyone?
There doesn't seem to be a direct option for it on the G+app, but if anything you can restrict it to WiFi only; not exactly what you were looking for though :/
Can't check for it atm, but maybe there's something under Gallery's settings?
Settings>accounts:Google>Google+>Camera and Photos>Auto Backup>Backup Settings and change to only WiFi. No option To just turn it off. Not sure why.

Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Well, I guess there is just no way to disable it separately. Thanks for your answers!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
first Enable backup Local folders in Photo app. then follow this
Turn backup on or off for individual folders
Open the Photos app > touch the Photos menu icon at the top left > On Device > to the right of each folder title, toggle the Blue cloud icon to turn Auto Backup on or off for that folder:
I know it sucks. there should clearly be an option of not to backup Videos right in the settings.. anyway.. that the only way other than turning all backup off. also dont forget to check backup during wifi & charging only

1. Go to Google+ android app and click on option to view setting menu.
2. Select setting option. Then you would be able to see Auto Backup Setting. This is the setting that automatically backup your photos and videos to Google Photos.Select that option.
3. You would see Autobackup option page. There at the top, there would be ON/OFF button. Tap on it to enable or disable it.
On third step, you will see backup photos and backup videos setting under backup setting. From there, you can do only photos or only videos upload and configure them according to your requirement.

SO frustrating
This is ridiculous. The video option is greyed out. WTF. Why? I have to turn this whole thing off because it keeps backing up my videos and filling the frakk out of my google space. AUGH!
I love that we are at the end of 2015 and google still haven't made a simple switch to disable video uploads. OneDrive has it though....
In Australia ADSL2 is the most prevalent internet technology servicing a huge portion of the population but is limited by the technology to a maximum of 1.5mbps upload (normally you get 20-30KB/s) and it takes hours and hours to upload a 700mb video. Because you are moving your phone from location to location this upload constantly gets interrupted and never completes so every time I am on WiFi I just have a huge battery drain from this app trying to upload the same movie for all eternity.

Is there any app that can track what apps are using data?

I am 2 days into my month with Koodo, but I am already at 4 gigs just in 3 hours. I checked my usage to see when and it looked like I was getting about 95mb usage per minute for like an hour. I thought at first that it was from tethering, but then I saw it was also before I was tethering, so it has to be from my phone. Any apps that can see this stuff?
Thanks
Joe
Assuming you aren't on a custom ROM it should be built in. from the home screen tap menu > system settings > Connections (tab on the top) > Data Usage and scroll down. you can also change your data usage cycle to get it to be a little more accurate. If you're using a custom ROM you still have the potential of that being built in.
If you want to go even further and have a rooted device, you can try Network Log on the Google Play store...
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.networklog&hl=en
I think Onavo Count is great to do this and it has another app called Onavo Extend that compresses your data and gets you more bang for your GB's

Any application for network traffic?

Is there any application to monitor the real-time network traffic? I have tried many applications like internet speed meter, float network monitor or some other network monitoring apps. But they all showing current upload/download speed and daily/monthly data usage. What I am looking for is since my internet bandwidth speed is limited and slow, I would like to know what applications is now downloading/uploading with the speed of ??KB/sec so that I can see it and close it down them running in background.
Thanks in advance.
I guess the title of the topic is kind of confusing. You can ask something like, data usage per app monitor or that type.

Not exactly what you want but you may try this:
open Settings > Data usage. Here you can see a list of apps and their corresponding data usage.
You can also tap on each app and select "Restrict background data" to prevent it access to the Internet using mobile data connection.

Thanks for all ur answer. May be u all got me wrong. Let me explain a bit more.
Let's say if my internet speed is max at 64KB/sec. If I want to download the file with max speed or want to load youtube video with full speed, I dont want to let other applications running in background and taking certain porting of my network traffic and making everything jammed. If I can have such applications (DU meter, net meter)in windows, I can see what is currently running such as ( windows update, antivirus update), then i can stop them and let my desired application run at max speed. Even though my device is multitasking, i cant do multitasking in network due to network speed limitation.
I hope you all can understand my problem.
I don't think there is an app that limits its allocated bandwidth. I know it's not the same but, WifiKill is useful if you are dealing with other people using the wifi, but other than that I don't think an app that controls the bandwidth on a per-app basis exists.
I wish developers can do that in future.☺
