Not sure if there will be anymore ROM updates in 2006. Pretty much manufacturers will concentrate on their new releases.
Yes, when the 1.13 ROM was released, I heard rumours that that was the last update we're getting.
I believe you guys are right, the Magician has reached the end of its life span. But there never was a generic WWE version of the 1.13, only a few localized builds, right? And how about that weird Radio 1.13? It was never used in an official build.
Looks to me like they just suddenly said 'enough is enough' and then pulled the plug on the Magician...
Am I missing something ?
Hiya,
I saw you guys talking about Rom v1.13 and as far as I know, there is only Rom v1.12 WWE.
Is there any new release ?

Bright Star
What exactly do you want? My 1.12 Rom together with the Radio 1.13 works just perfectly, nothing to complain about. Why people always want updates just for the updates' sake? I think we should be happy that we got such a good support for the Magician in the past - this is not common with all Pocket Pcs. I am completely satisfied with my Magician and the current software.

Check the ftp or http://www.t-mobile.nl/zakelijk/htdocs/page/service/mda_compact_upgrade.asp
It's complete with radio 1.12 & BB support in the ext-rom.

The Magician still has a lot of bugs. The more you push your device, the more bugs you will find. Just check around and you will know. But there's also quite a few silly bugs, that should have been fixed ages ago.
For example:
1. A generic bug that everyone have (to the best of my knowledge): if you are in the inbox while receiving a message, the envelope at the top of the screen will have to be removed manually, since it doesn't go away automatically after you have read the message.
2. A more specific bug. I believe this one is related to the setup of your telephony provider, but I am not quite sure. Still, it is a Magician-only bug: After a reboot, a text message will have to be received before the device is 100% logged onto the network. Until then calls can't go through, but are automatically transferred to voice mail. I have this specific bug and replacing the handset didn't help. Neither did upgrading the ROM.
So saying that ppl want updates just for the updates sake, simply isn't true.

1. Cant say I've noticed.
2. Does not happen with me.
Same to me, the camera annoys me more.
Overall this is the best device I ever had.

1. I haven't noticed this.
2. This doesn't happen with mine.
Jeez, guys! Just because you haven't 'noticed' something, doesn't mean it isn't there! I have been a software developer and professional bug hunter since 1996, so I notice these things, simply because it's my job.
It's also my job to narrow down the bug as much as possible, and in case of bug #2, I can tell you it's related to the Magician being listed as 'busy' on some centrals until the first message is received. So for those of you on centrals with this problem (Ericsson?), just disable the 'forward on busy' setting and you should be ok...
HBK, have you seen any other people on other providers have this bug? I've never heard of it.
The message icon I know only too well, though. It annoys me but it's not a huge issue.
I'm still on 1.11WWE with radio 1.13. Haven't felt a need to upgrade to 1.12 or even the T-mobile (or whatever) 1.13.
I run heaps of programs, many made by small developers that can be a little unstable and not install too neatly but aI gotta say that the operating system isn't bad compared to Microsoft's usual standard of bugs. You just gotta take a look at the latest WMF exploit in XP, 2000 SP4 etc. They'll never get that operating system right! Ok, so can't really compare the 2 but I can't say something good about Microsoft without bashing them in the same post! That's just not me!
HBK,
No offence, but error 2 seems to be very specific though must be highly irritating when you have it. Course there are many bugs, some M$ , some Magician related. Guess we all have to live with them forever, development won't ever be faultless due to several money related aspects of which I'm sure you will encounter in your work too.
Bottomline: my Nokia's have been much more stable & reliable. My Magician is much more capable & fun and my greatest irritation is the number of soft-resets a day due to a hanging camera app. or memory leaks. Sure it's partially all my third party apps & it's a (P)PC with a M$ OS, so I won't recommend a PPC to someone who just wants a phone with some extra's. Much to unreliable/unstable/frustrating. To me it's a hobby & I can live with it. When a patch comes along I try it & judge for myself. Still I'm quite happy with it.
Can't really make out if you're pissed or not (think not), if you are pls try to relax &, I know it's difficult, try to forget your work a bit & have fun with your magician it is possible ;-)
Cheers, M
@jimmy-bish
Actually, I have heard of a few other ppl here in DK having this problem, but it is very rare. That is also the reason why everyone, including the (German) technician who worked on my Magician, thought it was a hardware bug and replaced the motherboard. This means that now I only have the cover left of my original Magician, the rest has been replaced, but still the problem remains...
I have given up on Radio 1.13, since is was never officially released. Instead I am running the latest NL release of 1.13 with Radio 1.12 and Big Storage. Only the MMS part of the Ext. ROM is installed. All in all I believe this to be the best solution, running the latest released software with as few addons as possible.
MS is like a woman: you can't live with MS, and you can't live without! Even though they create heaps of problems, I sure am happy they are here, providing a lot of software we use everyday.
@oltp
Yes, it IS very specific. But please notice that I am not running my Magician on some home made network. I am a costumer of the largest mobile telephony provider in Denmark. This means that they run officially released software on their centrals and thus each and every phone released should be able to run on it, without any exception. Of course it is the responsibility of the phone manufacturer to make sure their product runs under all normally occuring circumstances and in this case, they have failed to do so. So there you have it, a bug in the Magician.
No, I am not pissed off. Although a bit frustrated, perhaps
I can confirm that both bugs exist and still.
You still have to seperate between bugs that are caused by the OS and cannot be corrected by manufacturer specific updates and bugs that are caused by the hardware, which certainly also cannot be corrected by an update. Besides that both bugs don't sound anywhere severe to me, the first one must be OS specific, the second one - well, I didn't ever realize it and never had this behavior. My device logs into the network without problems and without having to receive any messages. I never heard about or experienced myself problems with incoming calls.
I would recommend everyone to use Radio 1.13 since 1.12 was really crappy and 1.13 made a big difference for me and many others. Since that version, I don't have anything to complain about anymore.
dandie, what specific issues did the Radio 1.13 solve for you?
Please notice that the two bugs mentioned were only used as examples. They were just on top of my head. I believe a good handfull of other bugs are already described on this forum. No doubt a lot of people experience other bugs every day, but just aren't as loud about it.
@Dandie
Of course both bugs are Magician specific, or they would have been well known on all MS Mobile sites, regardles of devices. Just like the one with the SD card being deleted by WM2003SE, from time to time.
What do you mean that it isn't a severe problem if you can't receive calls on your phone? Are you kidding?
In many countries, including Denmark, ppl on average send/receive hundreds of messages each month, so bug #1 is a problem many times each day for a lot of us.
So what is a severe problem then? Does the device have to explode in your face on a daily basis or something like that?
I used the Radio 1.13 for several months and even though it seemed ok, it didn't fix any problems. So I went back to the latest Radio released, the 1.12.

Hello all,
last week I got my new HTC Magician, here in Austria so called "T-Mobile MDA Compact". Unfortunately I have the problem, that my device freezes from time to time (at least 1 time a day). This happens most of the time when using the T-Mobile IntelliDialer, but sometimes it happens even when I do not use the device at all.
When the problem occurs, I am not able to make or receive a call, the upper status LED is gone as well (no signal, no blinking).
When I got the device I had ROM 1.13 installed, but after I heard that maybe this could cause the problems, I installed version 1.12 from T-Mobile site, but still have the same problems.
Now I am really out of ideas, don't know what to do. It seems I am not the only one with this problem, so I am afraid it hase no sense to switch the device with a new one @ a T-Mobile shop. Or do you guys have a "good", normal running Magician w/o this bug?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Greetings, Matthias
Helle again,
As you've got the same problems on rom 1.12 & 1.13 and you got it just for a week I'd say go back and get another one. There are people with simular issues and I guess there are much more users without it, like myself.
So my advice use your warrenty, make a backup of your contacts etc. first with sprite (trial version is available) or AS or whatever, saves you a lot of times. I won't restore the apps just reinstall, maybe it is some combination of a faulty program & with a backup you get that back as well. And it gives you the chance to determine, if possible, what's causing the freeze.
Good luck, M
ok, then thanks again
Today I made a ROM update @ T-Mobile. If that did not the trick (I will look for errors the next days), then I will use my warranty and change the device itself. I hope they don't send it to technical support somewhere, but give me another one instead...
Greetings and thanks for your infos, Matthias

Hi,
I have been using my Magician for almost 8-9 months .. moving from ROM version 1.11 to 1.13 WWE BigStorage (radio 1.11 to 1.13 as well).Recently (last 1mth or so) I start to notice that I have a strange problem similiar to you, my 'radio' would 'hang' where I cannot receive or make calls, can't even receive or send SMS. However, my signal (the top bar signal strengh) will still work. This is really fustrating .. because the PDA still works, I won't know when my Magician 'hangs' ... (at least until I try to send SMS or make a call).
I've downgraded to Radio 1.11 & ROM 1.11 ... I'm still facing this problem, but not as often (sometime once in 2 days). The strange thing is that my wife who is using a Magician as well, is facing the same problem (symptom arrise almost the same time together). Both our phone used to be fine.
So far, no luck trying to locate the source of the problem, and I don't think both our magician's hardware got screwed at the same time ... I have a feeling, it has something to do with GPRS ... gut feel ... but cannot confirm.
Anyone face this problem and managed to solve it, I would appreciate any pointers ... Many thanks!
Note : I don't install additional ROM software such as CallerID, etc ... I only use intellidialer.
Hello, you could be right with your GPRS feeling, I have it as well...
Is the LED of your device blinking, when you have one of these freezes?
Hi guys,
Don't know if this gets you on the right track, but a few months ago I had major memory problems with my magician. Thought it was a virus, probably was one or two today plug-ins that consumed all of my memory very rapidly. Think of plug-ins like OO journalbar. Didn't look at the led blinking I just soft-reseted to solved the prob. for a few minutes. Very inconvenience when you're navigating in a car.
Since I ditched these plug-ins eveything is fine, tried them afterwards of course & noticed the memory leaks.
When you're not using anything like those apps. it must be something else. Maybe there's something on the forum.
Cheers, M
I thought about some apps or plugins as problem source too, so I refreshed my device without installing any additional app to it -- no success. So I still have these hangups, even if I have no tool installed...
Sounds like really s..tty problem.
Does the use of gprs or phone functionalities make any difference? what happens when you skip the ext-rom installation (hard-reset & soft-reset just before the customization kicks in) & go for basic WM2003, without all the TMO apps&branding?
M
... tried this allready, but without any difference, device freezes serveral times a day. I would say it's a hardware fault, can't think of another problem source.
Yesterday I spoke with a T-Mobile tech @ T-Mobile support. He told me, he is not aware of this problem and he always had "good" devices. And he updated my ROM to latest version...
Since I still have the problem, I will change my device now and see if this makes any difference!
haimat,
I think exchanging your magician is the best option, the techi might be right in saying he only encountered good ones. Haven't found much error reports like yours, so the rest must be good (look at the bright side). Hope you can trade it directly without any hassle & enjoy your magician for the rest of it's lifetime.
Found some people with a universal with simular probs. didn't read all posts though there were so many. So can't tell you how it ended, it's about a JasJas that hangs and hangs and ...
In the meantime good luck with the change of your device.
Cheers, M
New sprint rom?? http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=10293&page=3
http://download.america.htc.com/RUU_...PL106_Ship.exe
It's been confirmed. That is the new official ROM for Sprint. It fixes the Bluetooth issues among others. No Rev. A or GPS of course, but that was expected.
question is, is this really "better" than the alltel rom that has been available for a long time already over at PPCgeeks...
The alltel rom fixed the BT and alarm problem as well. I'm excited to see that Sprint finally caught up, but I'm wondering if this is better than the setup I currently have.
Well I for one am happy and upset.. I would like to see REV A , as I need the faster upload speeds for sending big files from my 4gb micro sd.
I havent tried the Alltel rom, but the new sprint rom fixes the keyboard lag + wm6 responsiveness problems.
After reading all of the threads over at PPCGeeks, it seems like there are some mixed results on the ROM (to be expected I guess, you can't appease everyone.)
-Most are reporting the BT fix worked correctly.
-I didn't see anyone say that the Alarm fix didn't work
-People are reporting that the OS seems a little faster and better at managing memory, such as reclaiming more when you close an app, etc.
-The radio version on the Sprint ROM is 1.47, compared to 1.40 of the Alltel, some were reporting better reception between this one and the stock rom (1.32 I believe)
-the most widely spread issue I saw was that some users were having issues with their dpad not working. At first, someone pinned it down to sprinttv, as it worked after they removed it, but then others said that the problem returned.
-YMMV, but some reported that when they skipped the sprint customization of the rom (when it starts initially, after the 3 second delay where you can soft reset) it caused issues on their phone. One person said that a workaround for this was to let it install EVERYTHING initially, and then do a hard reset and skip the customization process. It makes sense that if it were something with the EXTRom that it might put something in there that you needed, but again, not sure on this one.
-I can't believe how many people were stuck on the idea that they would be able to use Sprite Backup or SPB Backup to restore all of their stuff. Let me say this again, because I don't think it can be said enough. Unless you are just restoring folders such as your documents or something non-system related, you CANNOT use these programs. You WILL overwrite the new files with the old ones, causing a boatload of issues, if it even works at all. So don't do it, or you will cause yourself some headaches. Activesync remembers the apps you have installed, so just sync afterwards and click the boxes. For your other stuff such as contacts, back those up with a contact backup app or sync with outlook if you've got it.
just my two cents.

Just to clarify this is part. A hard reset will completely erase any carrier customizations there is absolutely no reason for installing extrom, hard resetting then skipping. Just start out with the hard reset, skip customizations and you'll be good to go.
Although there are still the other bugs with the update =)
Just installed it a while ago, skipped the sprint customizations, everything seems to be running good and actually noticeably quicker than before. New startup screen is cool too, no problems thus far =)
do yourself a favor and wait for the next rom. If you didn't already experiance it, your device will lock up and go to sleep requiring a soft reset...very unusable. and BT will turn off after a few minutes randomly.
load the colonel's rom on, it's much better imho
Seems to only happen to some people though. I have had my phone on pretty much straight since the rom update.
there seems to be a major bluetooth issue where the BT just shuts off periodically.. Not sure how,but they found a way to make bluetooth even worse!
I can't carry on a conversation without BT shutting off on me.. (or use the gps without it shutting off/etc..)

I haven't updated yet, plan to over the weekend, but I would suggest anyone having problems to stop and consider their setup first...
1. What programs are installed that could cause problems?
2. What registry hacks have been done that may cause problems?
3. What configuration settings might need reset that may cause problems?
For example, after a hard reset, Enhanced Network over USB is enabled by default, and this often causes Active Sync to have issues. Likewise, power management tweaks will have reverted to defaults and you may like a more finely tuned setup.
As for memory leaks being better/worse, you may have programs installed that are out of date/buggy.
I realize it's easier to jump on the "this sucks" bandwagon, but it doesn't help you or other users with legitimate problems when no consideration is given to what is causing a given problem.
These situations are precisely why the instructions tell you that EVERYTHING will be erased. This is a good thing since it forces you to clean house, but it also means you have to pay attention to those things you often neglect or may have changed ages ago and forgotten.
Finally, if all else fails, try the ROM update again. Sometimes things go wrong.
Sorry if this seems like a rant, I just want people having issues to place blame where it truly belongs. After considering these matters, if you still have problems, definitely let HTC and the rest of us know.
Best Regards,
Aaron

My experience is as simple and "vanilla" as it gets:
-Loaded new ROM
-Hard reset
-Stopped customizations
-Installed NO apps, did not turn on BT, made no calls, did nothing else
-3 DSODs in 4 hours
-Did a second flash (from a second computer with a freshly downloaded ROM)
-Hard reset
-Allowed customizations to run
-Again no apps, BT or calls
-DSOD within an hour

Sounds atypical to me, given that most users are updating without issue and experiencing better results. I have no reason to doubt your experience though... it sounds like you have faulty hardware, but here's a download link to the previous firmware if you're interested in trying it out first:
http://www.htcamerica.net/support/mogul/software-downloads.html
No, "most" users are not experiencing better results. I've been using this ROM with poor results, as have many others. Read this thread for many sad tales of woe:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=10302
Basically, the new ROM does fix a bunch of things, but breaks others, so I would not recommend installing this ROM.
1) Locks up when changing from Sprint to roaming. You can test this by manually switching from Sprint to roaming and back a few times, you WILL get a phone lockup.
2) BT turns off randomly for many users.
3) Turn on BT, let unit sit for a few minutes until it goes to sleep, turn unit back on, dpad no longer works. I have seen this myself many times.
Don't install this update --- use the Alltel ROM or wait for another update.

1) You're incorrect in stating that most users have no problems, etc. Some do, some don't. Read the posts at ppcgeeks, pdaphonehome, BAW, hofo. I am not at all alone in having problems.
2) I downgraded 2 days ago, and my Mogul runs fine again - just exactly like it did for the 1st 3 months I had it. It's not my hardware! It's a bad ROM release.
Not everyone uses the phone in the same way at all. So of course some people will not see the same problems that others do.
If you never use Bluetooth and never roam, then this ROM will work for you. Otherwise, it will cause problems. For me, Bluetooth works much better in 2.09, and I rarely if ever see lockups as I have with 2.16. So, I'm going with 2.09 for now. The alarm problem IS fixed in 2.16 but I never use alarms on my phone so it's not an issue for me. Freezes when roaming ARE a problem.

is colonels rom built on the alltel core rom? if so it may be our best bet as of now.
I am about to download and install the new .48 ROM, but what excatly did they fix?
Are people sending and recieving all sms'es and calls now?
Are the buggy volume control fixed?
What about the big waiting time when launching the messenger app with people who have a long sms-history?
As far as i am aware absolutely no issues whatsoever have been "fixed".
This "new" ROM is simply the latest version being shipped in worldwide devices.
The weekly calendar issue seems to be fixed.

I don't know what has been fixed and I can't comment on the problems you listed since I've never experienced them but I can tell you what works better for me:
1) the keyboard is much more accurate. I was reasonably happy with the keyboard on the last ROM but this one is much easier to use.
2) the proximity sensor now works every time I make or receive a call. This was a bit hit or miss for me with the last ROM and would fail more often than it worked.
3) Battery life seems much better. Again, I was pretty happy with this on the last ROM but it just seems to last a lot longer now. I had network issues today (nothing to do with the phone, it must have been a problem with 3 in London today because my 3G dongle was down as well) and was expecting my battery to die relatively quickly. However, despite this and the fact that I was playing with the phone more today (because of the new ROM) my battery is holding about 20% more than I would expect it to hold at this point in the day. I haven't bothered with the patch to turn off the data connection either so my phone should be doing more now.
I can't comment on much more. I experienced the new bug with the inbox and SenseUI but that was dealt with by locking the phone. I also had some trouble connecting to my Exchange server but that was dealt with with a couple of soft resets. Everything is generally going quite well.

I am about to download and install the new .48 ROM, but what excatly did they fix?
Are people sending and recieving all sms'es and calls now?
Are the buggy volume control fixed?
What about the big waiting time when launching the messenger app with people who have a long sms-history?

I have installed the new 1.48 rom today.
and I don't think they fixed anything. I still got a red blob on my pictures. And I still wait up to 45 seconds for replying sms. When the sms-history is long.!!!
I've installed it today as well (dutch version). A pity that you 've to reinstall all apps. No prob for me, as I'm still try to explore the phone.
Anyway connecting, installing etc everything was flawless, even the link with Exchange.
hmm,.. well,.. no issues so far
I've flashed the .48 over my belgian HD2 yesterday using the goldcard approach, I've got to say that I've yet to see any real improvement or bugfixes,...
The lockscreen acted up for a while but then mended itself automagicly and has been a good boy since.
Opera seems more responsive but that could very well be just me fooling myself.
Same goes for the keyboard, I caught myself noting 'hey, this seems a bit more sturdy than before'. This can all be attributed to perception, though
It works and the itch to be up to date has been scratched.. all in all I'd recommend it.
where do i get this rom, offical site please
Is this an official ROM?
Where can this be downloaded? How do you flash it?
Get the ROM from links in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=592954
Just installed it and personally think the touch screen is more accurate

Think or know, is it night & day better mate?
Hi
Can anyone tell me if they have kept all the software that was on 1.43, for example, ms office.
If someone can tell us what they have removed or added, that would be great.

I installed 1.48 last night and I think its night and day better than then old 1.43 rom.
Screen is less sensitive (which is good) because it makes the keyboard easier to use, less multiple key hits etc.. so you can actually type more accurately. I still get the odd moment where they keyboard appears to spaz out, but I think this is still down to accidentally breathing on the screen or looking at it in a funny way.. man that screen is so sensitive sometimes..
I also found that rotating and typing with both thumbs in landscape mode made for a very compelling typing experience because the keys are slightly larger and further apart which makes hitting multiple keys at the same time even harder to do.
Once you have used the device for a day or so (to build up its dictionary of words that you use alot) its becomes really very quick to rattle off very long texts.
Its still not quite perfect, but its a huge improvement over the previous rom.
Hello XDA Team,
Firstly, I want to say a huge thanks to the contributors of this forum as I've silently benefitted from your work over the past year on my previous phone, i900 Omina. Unsurprisingly I'm one of the many people who was tempted by the HD2 as it's effectively everything I always wished the Omnia would be - in principle.
So, I received my HD2 last Tuesday (direct from T-Mobile) and my number was ported from Vodafone on Thursday. After using the phone for a weekend I arranged an exchange as I believed my handset was faulty due to the crackling and resonating sounds from the earpeice. When I searched online I didn't find anyone with a similar complaint so I assumed mine was faulty. The replacement arrived on Tuesday and it's exactly the same, only this time the bottom row of buttons isn't a good a fit as on the first. Small issue that one and not really a deal breaker. A bit more searching and this time round I found the lists of post from people with the same sound quality complaints.
The issues I have with this phone are:
1) The crackling speaker - resonating to people's voices.
2) The SMS functionality, slow loading of messages and formatting bugs with the date stamp for one message overlapping the previous message in a thread, changing text size doesn't apply to every text in a thread.
3) The Contacts app freezes everytime I make a change to a contact, rendering the phone useless for about 30 seconds after each change. This includes when I add someone to the favourites list in Sense.
4)Random slow downs of Sense when hardly anything is running in the background (just Comm Manager)
5) The camera, even with the hotfix still has reddish/pinkish colouring to the middle of the picture
6) videos I recorded with the HD2 won't play on the HD2!!! Eh? What's going on there?????
Now I can accept software issues as I know these will be fixed eventually. My Omnia was a much better phone after a year of owning it than when it was first delivered almost solely down to ROM updates. However I am genuinely concerned that the speaker crackling is a hardware fault and not software, hence never going to improve.
Which brings me to my dilemma. I bought this phone from T-Mobile, which means I have a 7 working day period to return the phone and cancel my contract with no penalty. Today is the last day of that period, so I need to decide today whether to return the phone or to percevere.
I'll add a bit of balance to the dilemma by listing the things I love about the phone, which ultimately are the reasons which I would want to keep it if the issues could be fixed:
1) The screen the screen the screen!!!!!
2) Facebook integration with contacts
3) Great web browsing
4) Good music player & 3.5mm headphone jack
5) 3G, HSDPA and WiFi
6) WinMo so easy to sync with work Outlook and keep my Omnia contacts and SMS history.
7) Slim design, easy to pocket.
There you go, I have until the end of today to make my decision. I honestly don't know what I would replace the HD2 with IF I do decide to return it for good but 18 months if a long time to be using a phone which is supposed to be state of the art but stuggles with some of the fundamental jobs of a mobile phone.
Thanks for your time
DC.
Send it back.
I've had one now for over a month and it's great.
I don't have any of the problems you have.
I did have a slight pink tinge when I focussed at close range on a white sheet. But with the recent hotfix that is much improved. Anyway, I don't often photo white sheets !
I also don't video at all so tried your problem and I can confirm it's super simple to video and then playback (it's offered as an option after the recording is stopped).
I would send it back and ask for a new one and insist on an updated ROM.

Same here. Sounds like you've just been unlucky and got a bad one, like some others have reported on xda.

I agree with sending it back as faulty. Say you want another two weeks (or however long it is) with the new one as this one has been so faulty you need to re-evaulate when you get the new one whether you want it or not.
As for insisting on an updated ROM, don't even think about saying that to your phone provider. None of them have updated ROMs yet, and probably won't for a long time. They're likely to wait until the majority of bugs are ironed out before going through the lengthy process of "updating" a ROM for their customers. Seriously - just ignore that advice. (No offense meant, Cheesy Dave)

Hi
Instead of writing here your complaints you should have read some of the threads explaining your problems. I advice you to backup your data then hard reset your device and reinstall your programs one by one and eliminate the program which is eating your HD2's memory. At least half of your problem will be gone after hard reset.
i am using HD2 for a month now and resolved 90% problems came with it.
Good Luck

Probably if you spoke to the local phone rep and said "ROM" they would be most confused !

I'm sure they'd advise you on a massive 32MB ROM SD card that you could put in and store all your music and video on.

Oh I've been reading the threads here non stop and have hard reset the phone three times since receiving it. The only programs I've installed are BSB tweaks and the YouTube app which T-Mobile has removed. Otherwise it's untouched.
My main issue is the crackling speaker, which if you read my post you'd see that I'm happy to wait to sort all the software issues out over time, but hardware issues are different.
My problem is that T-mobile will not do another exchange. They will only give me one chance to exchange then it's either cancel or keep. As I'm on my 2nd handset already, it means I have to make that decision today.
I know some of you hate to see posts from people who are considering ditching their HD2, but that's the reality. We exist. I'm an existing WinMo user too, not even one of the iphone brigade.
I can imagine the issues you're having are annoying and I must admit I've also experienced some of them.
1) Crackling: not a problem for me. I use a bluetooth headset (plus I'm a a bit deaf anyway) so I don't notice any crackling. Have you tried a headset? Any headset? Does it still occur or is the problem only from the external speaker and earpiece? I know others have complained about the volume but thought it was fixed in a newer ROM
2) Messages loading: yes, a real pain. Have you tried the workaround which is to click "Send" as soon as the messages start loading, then click "No" when prompted to send an empty message?
3) Contacts: I haven't had this problem, but then I haven't added users to any groups as they were already set up on my X1.
4) Random Slowdowns: yes, I must admit, this happens to me from time to time. Although you might think that nothing is running there are some processes that aren't visible by default that may be consuming the CPU's time.
I've been using Leo ROMs for quite a while now and if you think it's bad on the HD2 you should've tried it on the X1 to really appreciate the speed and stability of the Leo. OK, perhaps not an acceptable answer for you but some things you just have to put up with and blame not on the phone but the underlying OS (yes, Windows!!)
5) Camera: I've noticed the pink tint too even after installing the hotfix. Annoying, to say the least!
6) Camcorder playback: Works for me!!
The camcorder issue must be 1.43 T-Mob rom related. This new handset has the same problem as the 1st one. It will record video, but won't playback.
I also have annoying freezing when I try to do the simplest of tasks, like emptying the deleted messages folder in the SMS app, to the point where the back cover comes off and the reset button has to be pressed.
BUT, when it works properly I love this phone. I guess if I keep it I'll be flashing new ROMs like there's no tomorrow. Obviously I haven't done that yet as I can't risk breaking the warranty on a phone which I may return.
Get it on O2 and apply the hotfixes... seems to be the better rom
Sod it, I'm keeping the phone. There's nothing else on the market that interests me, and no reason to think that the hardware on the upcoming Nexus will be any better if it's also an HTC handset.
I've got an SD card primed with Goldcard and 1.61.....I'm not gonna take the plunge just yet, but I've read some of the positive feedback on the newer ROMs. Once I've given up on T-Mobile releasing a newer ROM, then I'll get flashing.

Good decision chap. Just take the time to apply the fixes and you should be there.
Cheers
WB
It wouldn't surprise me if HTC haven't already got their sights on another ROM which has all hotfixes plus the one they are working on for the SMS fix that doesn't work, a hotfix to fix a hotfix lol.
Eventually they could even release android for it, why not? the hardware is what is keeping me glued to my phone, its ace. they owe it to us!
If it's O2 then you do get leeway (or used to) with regards to what you report as bugs and what they'll do or at least they used to.
When HTC Universal came out that was riddled with bugs and even the phone app didn't work properly (nearly put me off winmo phones for life, HD2 has been my first since) so anyway I called up after the 7 days said look I love the phone but these bugs are killing me. So they sent me another one which I tried and found the same bugs with, so they let me get a different model instead, and this was WAAAAY outside the usual 7 days because the phone was faulty. The 7 day rule is really there for if you get it and you just don't like it, not because it has issues, if it has issues then different more lenient policies apply.
My suggestion would be do the same tell them about the crackling etc and other bugs and get them to send you another, if it's still got the same issues then you've still got the option to swap.
Also without going into too much detail take your time sending yours back, you might find they'll let you keep hold of it for longer then you'd think
I was on the phone with T-Mobile Support (611), regarding my HD2 and the issues that I am still having with this device. The rep. stated that T-Mobile is aware of the issues on the phone and that the 1st ROM update did not resolve them all and caused some new ones.
She stated specifically this new update would resolve the issue of the device hanging after you try to wake up the phone...also, the "unreliable data connection" issue is still prevalent (I still have this problem - and I have tried everything I can think of or read about). She stated that there are other fixes that they are working on to resolve with this new update.
I could not get a solid time frame, but she stated that it should be pretty quick, given that they issued the first one within a short time frame after the HD2 release.
Now, I'm not sure if this means an upgrade from 6.5 to 6.5.3, but I wouldn't count on it. I just hope it is released soon. This device is so nice and so awful at the same time. Constantly I experience little nagging issues that make using this device such a hassle.
Have you tried just flashing it to one of these custom ROMs?
No I have not yet tried the custom ROM yet on the HD2. I like the way the T-Mobile ROM are, I just am getting fed up with the "unreliable data connection" BS. Also, the phone (since the ROM update) has been running slow and I don't think that is acceptable with the 1GHz snapdragon on this device. My only other issue is that the speaker phone stops working because T-Mobile added some stupid software to the device. If you dial 611, the software pops up and tries to solve your problem via webpage and stops the speaker phone from working till you restart the device.
While that is a short list of issues, they are major issues in using the device. But I think i will wait till this 2nd update comes out...if it does not resolve my issues, custom ROM here I come!
I belive flashing NRG will solve your issues It did mine.
Which issue did it solve? The data connection issue?
Data and freezing as well not to mention the phone just flies now. flashing a new radio fixed reception issue
well I will give it a try and see if it resolves my issues as well. I figure we have about a month or so before T-mobile releases the 2nd update. I know I will not be able to last that long with these issues. It is just a pain in the a-- to flash ROMs every day...I'm not into doing it all the time. I would like to find a good stable ROM and run with it. It just takes too much time flashing and reinstalling all those programs and changing the settings to where I like them all (too much work).
Like I said it is a shame, i really like this device on paper, but in the real world is just has some serious issues. I thought i would get a year or two out of this device when i bought it, now I am already looking to swap this puppy out. I'm looking to see what is coming down the pipeline. I refuse to go with WP7 (feels like the step backwards with it limitations as compared to WM6.5 - and i don't want a device that clones the iPhone of 4 years ago)
Anyone other suggestion on custom ROMs?
NRG 21911 is very solid and you don't have to flash everyday it has xda uc and pim backup witch will back up and reinstall all your software I did it yesterday in about 20 min. I refrain from flashing during the week. the the first time it will take about an hour just read all you can on it. 670megs free space on device 13gigs on sd and 300 megs of free RAM
I'm downloading the 23121 Cookie Dinik Glass version right now...I'll let you know how it works on my device. thanks for pointing me in this direction, appreciate it!
tmobile rep told me the same thing after I had a warranty exchange, she said to expect the update soon as there are alot of people experiencing problems with the current software. Although to be honest after running Android on my HD2 I dont think I ever want to use winmo again.
are you getting everything to work with Android? i did not think they have a fully functional Android ROM for the HD2 yet
They're all the same...
My biggest complaint is the bad data connection. Paying too much money for crappy connection. I can't even get connection in my lower level of my house. I think every carrier and cell phones all have their own problems. My two co-workers, one with Droid and the other iPhone have similar problems. Droid keeps freezing 2 warranty phone exchanges so far and iPhone looses connection frequently. iPhone guy wishes his would freeze so he could get a replacement. So it's not just me.
Help me please
So i tried to install android, and on gthe web it said i needed to install hpsl well my phone had it set to 2.10 they stated i needed 2.08 or earlier so i did it but the install still didn't work !!! How can i return my phone back to 2.10 and still get my warranty back
android fo real?

i read on pocetnow that android is being worked on on xda. seen a couple of post too, but there is always some component not really working. is there an official android post where all the kinks are worked out? i would like to switch if thats the case. thanks.
Wow is all I can say about that NRG ROM....it is great! does everything I have been looking for, no data connection issues since last night (I'll report back on this issue as time goes by). It's fast and very stable (so far, but hell I'm impressed), and I did not even use most stable version the 21911.
The UI is great, I love the three pages of app slot, everything is within one or two finger stokes this way. It also gets rid of the apps that I don't want (ie TelNav, etc...) but keeps most of the apps that I do want...I can always install cabs for the programs I want from the official ROM. Plus it has cooked into it all those sweet tweaks and settings. Great work, I'm not even waiting for T-mobile to release the 2nd update any longer.
Thanks gtrplr71 again for suggesting this custom ROM, it's so nice, I don’t even think I will be trying out any other ROMs.
I would not get hopes up of a 6.5.3 upgrade. Could you imagine the Technical support nightmare if they had to troubleshoot 2 different OS versions?
This is one reason I think Android and Linux will really take off in the future.

There's a HD2 Android section in the original HD2 area (euro hd2 section).... but it is a work in progress. There are still a lot of issues and kinks. It will be a while before it works as well as a native android phone. But the progress they've made is unbelievable. It's great having both winmo and android on my phone.

your welcome don't forget to make a backup with pim backup to your sd card and use xda uc once you get things settled. Have fun!
how does the xda uc work? i could not figure that out, when I ran the app it stated that i did not have that file on my storage card...but it appeared there somehow.
Also, the incall record does not seem to work at all. when i lauch it (after I connect or before I connect a call) all I get is a blank lined page (note pad page).
And, is there a list of the added and removed apps somewhere? I could not find it in the ROM thread.
As for the 6.5.3 upgrade from T-Mobile, i don't think it will happen either and right now, after trying the NRG ROM...I don't care. I'm not even going to try the T-mobile 2nd ROM upgrade. Now with Android comes along on the HD2 (fully functional) then i will surely set up a dual boot situation on my HD2. That is like the best of both world.
(xda uc)-you wont notice anything different It will run and monitor the phone for new settings when you decide to flash a new build it will auto run and import settings and apps.
