Is there anyway to stop sites from knowing im surfing with a PPC ? I want to visit a site but it must be detecting that im on a mobile device as its coming up different to when I surf on my computer.
I have installed PIE Plus which was listed as working on WM5 but it doesnt show in the taskbar of Pkt explorer and so doesnt give me the option of indentifying as 5.5 or 6.0 IE.
Are there any other programs that will do this ? I was surprised that Opera 8.50 doesnt do this.
Anyone ?
Use tweak2k to edit your useragent string (I'm sure it can be done in registry by yourself). I presume the WM5 version does this, the WM2003 version does I think.

changed the version from 3.02 that was set to 6.0. Didnt make any difference and the page still showed up different from on my pc.
Out of interest the page was http://wwitv.com
Not merely the version number.
various settings under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent
eg
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows NT 5.0; Vijay555)

Pretty certain I've found it in the DLL - will look to see if I can change it and make it available.
Cheers,
Steve.

Having looked closer, I can see that the user agent is being passed through as:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; SHARP/WS003SH; PPC; 480x640) Opera 8.50 [en]
And I've found the "Sharp" bit, but don't really know what it would be better set to.
Cheers,
Steve.
We should find out how to pass another parameter, instead 'Sharp' :?
I can easily change "SHARP/WS003SH; PPC; 480x640" to something else - but I'm not sure which bit of that would stop a site from working properly. The fact it has "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0;" in there is probably enough for most sites, unless it's getting upset at finding "Windows CE;" - but to be honest, that would be surprising to me.
Cheers,
Steve.
Is this info 'inside' the opera DLL :?:
In my case, I should change the 'SHARP/WS003SH' into... smth else, to be recognized as a V800, by exemple...
Google comes up as the full page so it isnt being recognised as a ppc.
Right, but to be able to access my operator TV live, I need to be recognized as a HP iPAQ HW 6515 or a Sony Ericsson V800, by exemple :?

steve, i assume you are using a hex editor to change the string - which is one way of skinning the cat! is there a more elegant solution? see my earlier post at the top of the thread re: (lack of support) for ua.ini in opera 8.5 for pocketpc.
the service i would like to get to is vodafone live (in particular the tv streaming) on a 3g phone. vodafone's servers are checking the user agent and to date i have had some success when i got PIE to pretend to be a 'Nokia6630' or 'Nokia6680' (i.e. change 'SHARP/WS003SH' to this and leave everything else alone) - perhaps that's sufficient for most people's needs ...
How is it possible to tell PIE that you are a Nokia 6630 :?:
Another ini file :?:

Posted this earlier on the Opera thread in the news forum - may help:
Just been playing with Opera and it seems to be a hell of a lot better than the still shockingly bad Pocket IE. One thing I did have a problem with was it identifies itself as Internet Explorer by default, causing some CSS-based pages to render incorrectly. This can be fixed by adding a new section to the opera.ini file in \Application Data\Opera thus:
[User Agent]
Spoof UserAgent ID=1
Full options are:
Opera = 1
Mozilla = 2
Internet Explorer = 3
Mozilla, no Opera mention = 4
Internet Explorer, no Opera mention = 5
More information on these settings can be found here: http://www.opera.com/support/usingopera/operaini/

Thank you very much.
I was trying this past weekend to sell something on Craigslist. I remembered a while back that I could take a couple pics of my things to sell on my MDA and post it right from the phone. Now it doesn't work. I get this error saying that it can't process my request. I did a little homework and found out that the site has somehow blocked people from posting ads from their phones. How does the site know I'm posting from my phone?
from what i know by default your browser of choice has a name it uses to identify itself to a website. using schap's advance config 2.02.1.0.0 there is a feature u can check the broswer name, by default it is set to HTC_P4350 Mozilla/4.0 (for my wing) which i am sure website pick up as a mobile browser maybe set it to what the default IE on your computer shows.
maybe you can try using Opera Mobile and masking it as a desktop??
can Netfront do that? i have no idea....
With the Advance config version i mentioned above u can rename the browser agent and yes most websites dont pick up that opera mini is mobile ie myspace from pocket IE will display lame text groups for checking things... just based on the broswer where as opera mini 4 it picks up the normal myspace page if that makes sense.
alright. i'll give it a shot

Yes, netfront can do that.
steps..
1)go to its options>misc tab
2)edit/make a user agent as following..
Code:
title:IE
user-agent:Mozilla/4.08 (compatible; Windows NT/5.1) 6.0
appName:MSIE
appVersion:6.0
appCodeName:Mozilla
language/platform: en / Windows NT 5.1
Hi,
I have the following problem with X1 R2AA10, Internet Explorer:
I cannot get it to spoof websites that it is NOT ppc but desktop version. I want to get 'regular content' and not this mobile crap. I have changed all version strings I could find via Resco Registry, and still, somewhere hidden it gives out something that websites come up with that mobile version instead of regular.
Anybody knows how so change what, so that I can get real desktop versions of websites instead of mobile versions?
Thanks
PS
No, I don't want to use Opera!
However, anybody knows a way so that PIE understands JavaScript?
Here's my initial release of "Opera Personality Switcher," soon to be found in my custom ROM
It gives you a few options for opera's "Personality" -- user agent, proxy, etc. It's handy if you want to spoof a site (I use it to fool sites into feeding me their iPhone content)
Here's what I have so far:
1) OPS iPhone - No proxy, user agent set to match mobile Safari's
2) OPS Opera Mobile Standard - No proxy, user agent set to Opera's default
3) OPS Opera Mobile Standard 2 - No proxy, user agent set to "HTC-P4600/1.2 Opera/9.50 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en)" -- which is the standard for a Fuze (and for a Touch Pro?)
4) OPS AT&T Fuze- Media Net's proxy (wireless.cingular.com), user agent set like on Standard 2
5) OPS Firefox- No proxy, user agent set like Firefox 3.5 on Windows, for a full desktop experience.
I'm no programmer, so this is all accomplished with registry tweaks done cabs, linked in your start menu, in a folder called "Opera Personality Switcher." It works more or less the way AT&T's Enable/Disable proxy cabs did.
This is tested against a newish build of Opera 9.7 (currently 35432, found here), but may work on more recent versions of 9.5 as well. This first release will only work on versions of Opera Mobile that store preference settings in the registry.
Sounds great. Would you also add a desktop mode that sets the user agent to firefox or opera?

Sure. Expect the practical results to be very similar to the Opera (mobile) standard -- except for on those very few sites that actually recognize opera as a mobile browser (my experience is that most don't.
Actually, I might as well put in an IE mobile variation too, to FORCE it to be recognized as a mobile browser ...
Initial version released!
good stuff mate... have added it here : http://www.1800pocketpc.com/2009/10/01/opera-personality-switcher-change-user-agent-on-opera-mobile.html

I haven't tested against the official beta yet, but taking a quick look at the cab available from opera's site, it looks like it still relies on opera.ini (rather than the registry entries OPS changes) -- so it seems like it wouldn't work.
I'll look into it making it work with that release (and older 9.5s that work the same way) when I've got a bit of free time later this week.
Just downloaded it and it works fine for me. I am running the 9.7 version of opera. I installed the OPSiphone file and then opened Opera. I had to open it close it and then opened it again and it worked fine. Great app thanks
Good stuff. Now, I have a way to get cingular video to work and get regular desktop pages WITHOUT having two diff browsers. Thanks much.
excellent idea!
Thanks for this... very useful
hey Wordsmith9091
wondering if you could update your cab to include latest version of opera mobile or give us a clue of where to find user agent on the register so that we can edit them our self thank you
don't like visiting mobile sites unless i choose too rather visit desktop version first

Im interested too
Well after some days of fliddling I have my Touch HD back and BBC iPlayer and U-Tube working as well - which they didn't before...
I'm on Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM 1.56.405.1 (43972) WWE and the performance and reliability of the Touch HD had been poor for some months and I was running more apps to fix issues than I was to enjoy the thing...
Main problems were bluetooth & internet connections and video preformance and I started to feel that some these apps were interacting, conflicting and causing instability so I decided to start again, from scratch.
Initially I did a hard reset and slowly reintroduced the few apps and data I initially needed but no new browsers, players, codecs or bluetooth tools and everything worked and worked well, even my Landrover BT car kit which has been a major PITA for months.
I tried the resident Opera 9.5 and found the iPlayer link wouldn't work 3G or WiFi - the BBC website always asked for "latest Flash version" and "enable javascript" so;
1. I installed "Flashplayer 7 for PPC" and made sure that was recognised by looking at "opera: plugins" and then
2. ensured the "javascript" option was ticked in Opera "settings"
I then noticed the iPlayer bookmark button in Opera and the one in Programs takes you to www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/ not www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/iplayer.
"MOBILE" makes all the difference and iPlayer now works fine however the bookmark button still has the wrong URL coded ito it.
I guess it's in Manilla somewhere, I can't find it in the registry, anyone know how can I change it, edit those hardcoded "favourites" ????

sadly, no... it's not that...
my registry does not contain "HLKM / Software / Opera / Prefs", but I have already changed that setting (HTC_HD2_T8585 Opera/9.7 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en) to HTC_Touch_HD_T8282) in "opera : preferences" within the browser.
any other ideas ?
I have the same problem. Just reflashed back to stock ROM (same as yours WWE 1.56.405.1). BBC iPlayer is (as you know) included in this ROM and it used to work without hassle. Now the built-in shortcuts take you to the PC iPlayer webpage NOT the moblile iPlayer page.
I did not have to make any changes to registry or Opera pref or add java. Worked straight after the reflash. I guess the "work-round" is to add my own favourite pointing to http://www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/iplayer but it would be nice to know how to change the built-in ones.
I wonder if it is something to do with how the BBC site checks the ID if the device looking at it and then serves what it thinks the correct page. Or maybe they changed the link a while back. No idea - but it would be nice to know.
I wouldn't thought this was rocket science...
these bookmark links must be coded somewhere, I only need to change the URL, are there any gurus out there ?
