Has anyone else suffered this problem??:
I have just got back from Las Vegas, twice while there my phone did a hard reset, once, as i held it in my hand, apart from the fact that i lost all my contacts etc i was well miffed as to why it happened in the first place?
My conclusion was STATIC!!, as anyone who has been to vegas will testify - static is a pain in the arse there (dry conditions and miles of carpet walking)
The phone seems ok now i am home, i have read numerous posts over the years about phones hard resetting themselves - could this be one of the answers?
One question, is there a way of backing up contacts etc to the storage card just in case this happens again?
You can store them in 'permanent-storage', you can use xback-up or a program like Sprite.

I prefer Sprite Backup, works like a charm. Can make .exe files that automatically extract to the device without installing the Backup software before, can compress and encrypt and automatic backup works flawlessly. Never tried other products, though...

today, for the second time since the ownership of this phone, my phone has been hard reset.
they battery was fully charged last night, and i had a couple of apps installed on the PPC. but the last time this happened, there were no apps installed on the phone, and it just randomly hard reset, and i lost EVERYTHING on my phone.
any ideas?
also, how do i get back my partnership from Activesync so that it recognises the device? i lost the partnership when the device was hard reset today.
also (last thing) if i do synchronise with activesynce, will i get all my data back on the phone, or will all the data on my computer be erased, and make me hopeless?
thanking you in advance for any replies.

desperate
p.s.: it's a himalaya
i just do a restore (yes some people do make backups), and then i have my partnership back.
If this isn't an option try
1) setting your regional settings like before (don't know if this is necessary but read it somewhere in this forum)
2) in the registry of your XDAII set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Ident/Name to what it was = name of directory on your PC under "Document and Settings/username/Application Data/Microsoft/Activesync/profiles/" (at least that's were it is on my Win2000
About the hard resets : I have no idea
what about the data though?
when i synchronise with activesync, and i have data remaining on the computer from my previous partnership, will i lose the data on the computer?
/me goes and tries it.
how do i access the registy on my PPC?
with phm regedit, it's freeware at i thik it's floating somewhere here on the forum :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=7136
with a new partnership, he will take data from xda to PC.
For syncing with outlook, i think he asks what to do copy them pc => xda; xda => pc ; or keep duplicates.
well, the only problem with that would be that when installing the registry program, i would also lose all my data, wouldn't i?
you can always connect as Guest & it won't do any syncing.
and then copy the cab file in the zip to somewhere on your xdaII & run it. That would install regedit on your xdaII.
Then Change the Name and reconnect to your PC.
the name of the device is already the same as that i had previously (Pocket_PC), but it still won't let me sync with my previous profile
I backup everyday using Sprite....its very fast
Since then I got no worries abt Hard Resets...ever.
You can store the backup files in your SD card or even your desktop.
If you keep files in the desktop, please
uncheck the 'Establish Partnership during backup or restore'
Its worth getting Sprite.
it is not the matter of worrying about the hard resets, it's just that i find them really annoying.
speaking of which, my phone hard reset AGAIN (strike 3) yesterday while i was walking up the stairs with the phone in my hand.
weird, or what?
all things active sync accountwise is located in
documents & settings\application data\ms\activesync\
and
documents & settings\my documents\my pocketpc ducoments
and no when you sync with outlook the contacts and appointments are added to outlook ms would have an angry mob on their door steps if
messing around with pda's would clear peoples outlook account
if you worry you can export outlook to a pst file
as a backup
if you remove the device from the application data place
or backup up you can use the same sync name as you did before thats where it gets it from
in the last three days, my phone hard reset on me twice.
these are becoming ever so frequent, and pissing me off now, because i don't who is calling me unless i get to a computer to restore all my data.
could it be possible that the battery is loose?

I'm surprised you haven't thrown it up the wall I guess it could be some sort of loose connection, but perhaps it would be better to take it back to the supplier (if it is still under warranty).
yes, i think it was a loose connection, because i just got frustrated and tried putting a piece of folded up paper on top of the battery, and hasn't hard reset since.
i think this is a common problem among us XDA 2 users and it is a MUST to use Sprite Backup... it is fast and has a smaller compression so the backup file is not that big to store in the mmc... just dont forget to install it in the storage card.. Sprite backup = no need for PC to restore files..
I had no problem with hard resets until I upgraded the rom to 1.72. Now my O2 XDA II hard resets randomly too. Once a month at least. I used the backed up software built-in to restore and use PHM RegEdit to restore my registry as well.
What's annoying is my Speed Dial resets even when I backed it up and other things went back to my previous backup. I'm going back to 1.60 or 1.66, good thing I still have the ROM backed up.
I have the same problem with my qtek2020, since rom version 1.72.00WWE.
My ppc has also an other problem, It looses the network after about 2 hours, after that i am not able to call, so i do an soft reset and the problem is over.
I believe that your xda has many application - and there is a conflict caused this Hardresets.
Solution is remove some of them - and it will be ok.
zhingis, no device should hard reset due to a conflict, with a polite O/S it would close one, more likely a lock up or soft reset but it shouldn't hard. The no. of applications won't have a bearing in any case unless they are open.
Has anyone tried regressing bootloader V to resolve?
I know that Pocket Plus from SPB has an issue with the XDA2 where it will cause it to hard reset if you have an SD card in, that's documented on their website.
Are you using SPB Plus? In anycase, use Sprite backup to your SD card, and within a matter of minutes you can have you're phone back the way it was.

I have my SPV M1000 now for 2 weeks and today for the second time all my installed programs and data where lost.
The first time the phone’s OS (I think)was hanging ...so…soft reset....data gone..
Second time the main battery was low (but not the backup battery) and after charging the battery all standard programs from Orange automatically where installed? and my data was lost.
Anybody an solution?
What sort of programs did/do you have installed? After the first reset did you then install the same programs again? knowing this can help rule out any software causing these problems.
May be a faulty unit and may have to go back, but try to eliminate the software first. Have you upgraded anything since getting the phone?
Cheers
Anthony
Only add an 1gb sd card, and I used the xda2unlock to remove the orange lock from the phone.
Programs:
Tom tom
nPOP
Betaplayer
4Pinball
Syswatch
Microsoft.Voice.Command
Spb GPRS Monitor
SPV LOCKS UP AND REST WITH ALL DATA LOST
I HAVE A SPV M1000 ORANGE FRANCE WHICH WILL LOCK ITSELF UP AND NEITHER THE POWER BUTTON OR SOFT RESET HELP, I TRIED REMOVING THE BATTERY AND THE UNIT TURNS BACK ON SOMETIME, BUT WITH THE ORIGINAL SETTING AND ALL DATA LOST. THIS HAPPENS EVERY 3 OR 4 DAYS, FORTUNATELY I USE X BACKUP PROVIDED WITH THE UNIT TO RESTORE MY DATA, BUT THIS IS TIME COMSUMMING NOT TO MENTIONED ANNOYING. I HAD MY UNIT REPLACED ALREADY 3 TIMES AND IT IS STILL HAPPENING. CONFIGURATION: SD CARD 1GB AND SOFTWARE AS FOLLOWS: OMEGAONE BATTERY PACK PRO, OMEGAONE JOURNAL BAR AND SPB GPRS MONITER. IS THERE A ROM BUG WITH ORANGE SUPPLIED UNITS AS I HAVE A FRIEND WHO USES QTEK 2020 WHICH WAS PURCHASE DIRECTLY AND THEREFORE NOT SIMLOCKED WITH IDENTICAL SOFTWARE BUT WITH A 512MB SD CARD.I NOTICED A LOT OF PEOPLE POSTING IDENTICAL PROBLEM WITH THE OPERATOR PACKS. DOES ANYBODY HAVE AN ANSWER TO THIS PROBLEM
I have the exact same problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I use also an 1 Gb SD card and also use "Spb gprs monitor".
Also I use Xbackup......good program!
Did you remove your Orange simlock? I did!
On a strange way it will sometimes happen after a few day....but now it's already 2 weeks ago!??!
I don't know if this an familiar bug/problem!
Best regards,
Dide
So I'm not the only one...
Well, I thought to be the only one with this stupid problem!
Unfortunately no apps like yours!
Did one of you get some news about it?
I'm with the Qtek2020 and the only answer they gave me was :"Ok, try sending it back, we will take a look!"

it is not actually a solution but a temporary fix! as ive said in the other topics, sprite backup is way faster than xbackup plus it creates smaller backup files compared to Xbackup... very handy especially for phones that hang/ hard resets often randomly..
Simply Fixed!
Hi All of You!
First of all Thanks Very Much for all the hints you have left on this thread!
It's two weeks since my last breakdown of my Qtek 2020, no more problems, nothing unregular, simply a working PDA/Phone.
The key for me has been the removal of the "PocketPlus" plugin that checks the Free Space in the SD Card and in the in ternal memory.
Since then I'll never had that stupid reboot... but Sprite Backup is a Hand from Heaven in any case!
Bye Bye!
Carlo
AMEN!!
I have an O2 XDA2. I just took the phone out of my jacket pocket to find that it wanted me to calibrate the screen. It went on to take me through the whole set-up wizard and then I found that all my data and installed programs had been lost
I'm guessing the phone decided it wanted to reset itself!
Does anyone have any idea why this might have happened so I can avoid it happening again?
The phone had plenty of battery power (approx 80%). It had plenty of space space (approx 28MB). I hadn't recently installed any software although I did uninstall Pocket Money on the weekend. I also created an IMAP email account then but I've had no problem with the phone since then until now.
Any ideas? Thanks very much
would prob be a good idear if you stated the rom version you are using
Sorry, It's 1.60.00 WWE
I have never upgraded it as I haven't the first idea how or what the implications are.
the latest officail rom is 1.72
if you get that from their site you will not get warrenty issues
when i used 1.66 i had lockups from time to time
after i got 1.72
i havent had any issues
I don't really feel comfortable upgrading it as I haven't the first idea what to do.
How do you normally reset a device? Is it something I could have done by accident?
there is a little hole in the buttom of it in the right corner if you press that using something thin like the stylus while you press the on button
then it hardreset
but there is software which let you do it as well
the upgrade is really pretty simpel
Thanks very much. I know the reset button, I use that every now and again. There's no way I could have pressed it and the on switch by accident given tha the phone was in an otherwise empty jacket pocket.
Oh well, I guess my phone just had enough of life. I'll look into upgrading the ROM when I feel a bit more adventurous
Fabulous...My phone has again decided to reset itself out of the blue.
I have no idea why it does this but it's a pain in the rear. Has anyone seen this before? Does anyone know if there's anything I can do to prevent it? (other than upgrading to the Universal when it comes out!!)
And it's happened again...seems to happen approximately once a month.
Has this spontaneous hard reset issue not happened to anyone else?
I suffered this audacious curse only to find that by removing my 1gig sd card remedied the problem.
I'm wondering if the sd card draws too much power/resources or whether I have a dodgy sd card.
Either way, without it I'm flying. I pop it in when I need to use my TomTom and as it's on charge in the car cradle it doesnt matter about resource usage etc.
So, try removing your sd card and see what goes
SD cards seem to be causing all sorts of problems. I kept getting the eternal spinning timer when copy, paste or deleting files, if the card was inserted. Did a soft reset today to be met with the calibration screen as from a hard reset. Such fun isnt it.
Hi Guys
Thanks very much for your comments. Unfortunately it isn't the cause as I have had my SD slot empty for a while now (my SD card is in my new car radio/MP3 player )
I'm starting to think that after 15 months my XDA2 has decided that it's had enough of the world. My colleague told me that it's seeking revenge as it's heard me salivate over its younger sister (the Universal).
As you say having the phone hard reset itself is a whole lot of fun!
I have the Sprite Back Up programe so all is not lost - it creates an exe file on the SD card that you locate and select thus restoring everything just how it was before it was lost
one can also just have activesync do an inc backup at each sync
and if the device hardresets one can connect as guest and restore the backup from ones normal profile
The nice thing about the Sprite software is that you can restore when you're out and about unlike the active sync method which means you need your pc close by
Ok I know it's a stupid question but as my teacher said the only stupid question is the one you dont ask !
I have just upgraded to a wizard and as you know it has WM5 does this mean I dont have to worry about the battery going flat coming loose and losing everything.
I had to use sprite backup on my M1000.
Is it better to use a backup program just in case. Which one is best Sunny Backup Manager ?
Thanks

As you said to be safe always have a back up. However you are correcet that even if your battery falls out, dies etc etc etc your precious data will be safe. bar you having to do A HARD RESET. But bear in mind with new battery technology you should not eally let them die down to much.
Sunnysoft Backup Mngr works just fine
Hello,
I had a problem with my phone, after removing some software I found that my phone wouldn't restart, (this think this might have been due to lack of space on the programs memory as I had a lot of stuf installed). it'd just stick on the windows mobile screen.
the only way that I could find to get it working again was a hard reset, (soft resets wouldn't work, it just hung on the windows mobile screen).
so, I turned it off, and turned it back on again held down the two buttons, waited till it asked me if I wanted to format and pressed send to ok this...
now the pone works, but i've lost all the data that was on it (expected).
is there any file recovery software that anyone knows of as I'd like to try to recover my old text and mms messages as well as some pictures and documents that were stored on the phone.
Many thanks,
Danny.
Well you are a bit late on this one. The time to install recovery software is before you need it. It can only recover what you have backed up. A hard reset is essentially a total erase and reset but I suspect you knew that. I use Sprite Backup and have several years of excellent results with it. SPB also makes a good backup program. Both are well worth the money and should actually be the first thing you install on your phone.
I've not heard of anyone recovering data from a hard reset. This is actually why most users keep the bulk of their data on the memory card. Good luck.

What he said...or she. I'm not bored enough to look you up, Zoltar, but that seems like a masculine name to me. I certainly wouldn't name my daughter Zoltar, for example...my son, on the other hand, would do well to respect me in the fact that I didn't give him a weird name.
Getting back to the issue. Forewarned is forearmed. Get yourself an SD card, and a backup tool. It's too late for this round (read: you're screwed), but there's bound to be a next time, if you're hanging around on this site. Also, keep your contacts synced to a computer, and copy the most critical ones to your SIM card, as well. It won't make them appear twice, and it's much easier to get contacts from SIM back onto a to phone than the other way around. At least this way, if you have to do a hard reset in the field, you don't lose those critical numbers.
K bye,
Myrddin

well...
I usually say that backups are someting that you tell other people to make whilst believing disaster will never strike you.
anyway... my stuff was backed up to a memory card, but the memory card stopped being recognised by the phone last week,
I've read several stories online about cards doing this. seems that they loose their formatting as the card now can't be read in a card reader and shows up as not formatted. now I'll get may card reader out and see if I can recover some of the data using data recovery software.
Also, I did take backups of my messages using PIMbackup... only after it was too late did I read the developers site telling me that media messages are not backed up because the media part of the message is an attachment.
so I'm left with the end result that my backups are not worth the effort i put into making them.
OK, looking at it from a different angle.
if there is no recovery software that can be run on the phone, is there any way that the phone can be recognised as a fat partition to a computer? then I could just scan the partition with regular tools that would be used to recover data from a normal hard drive.
I am looking for solutions of this kind also...
my PC to see my xda as an accessible fat partition so that i can scan it with a recovery application.. or ..
a recovery application written fro Windows Mobile
dose any one have answers?
thanks
lost data on pda
can I make a disk image of my pda and scan that with a recovery application on my pc?

I was able to recover most of my files, after performing a hard reset, using Raise Data Recovery (ufsexplorer.mobi)
