"No GSM" on boot screen? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

How about this weird phenomenon on my Qtek 9000...
Sometimes when I have absolutely no radio signal (i.e. in an elevator, basement, etc.) and I perform a soft-reset, my Qtek 9000's splash screen and diagnostics say "No GSM" instead of the radio and protocol versions. And by the time I'm booted into the device properly and have a proper signal, I go to the Device Information page and those fields for Radio and Protocol are empty, and my IMEI is also blank...
Just seems to be a "cosmetic" issue, but it does concern me...
Please tell me I'm not the only one...

actually I get the 'no GSM' notification when I do a soft-reset on my xda Exec too; but in my case I know for sure that it didn't correlate with circumstances where there was no reception,
when I did the soft-reset.
It seems as if it happens intermitedly and randomally with no obvious reason.
Regarding the IMEI disappearing: I only saw it happening once, by chance - as I had no reason to check this phenomena before - so I cannot say for sure if it is related (at least in my device).
will keep you posted if I come across this again.
By the way I saw you had another posting regarding this phenomena: about the disappearance of WiFi (WEP) definitions, etc...
Do you theorise that the effect of this phenomena extend even beyond that?

i also did encounter this problem b4, can't open my contacts, no radio, couldn't key-in my pin code...
the solution that i tried is flash my radio rom with the shipped XDA Exec rom....solves everything..

mee too ...have to unplug and plug again my SIM into the 9000 to make the "GSM" version to appear on the splash screen

Perhaps I have a bad SIM then? I don't know...

GSM ERROR Problem :o(

For the past few weeks I have been happily using PPC 2003 with no real problems. Yesterday I receieved a annoying spam sms text message.. I deleted the text and my phone suddendly crashed!! I tried soft resetting but no joy.. so I tried hard reset but to my horror the screen showed GSM ERROR in the bootloader (I was a bit worried).. I tried to restart teh GSM but it kept failing. I then tried the soft reset and the 'Windows Test only screen was displayed but the XDA model number and radio stack version were not. The Unit version of PPC 2003 was displayed however.. Anyway basically the xda did not an expensive brick I thought!!. I tried downloading the ROM again via SD card method but no joy.. I also tried installing an old ROM but still no joy.
Anyway I slept on the problem and decided to maybe do some drastic measures i.e the sodlering e.t.c After waking up the XDA was flat as a fart!! so i plugged it into the mains and to my suprise it worked!! not sure what I had reset by letting it go flat but it did the trick.
anyway I've seen other people with the similar problems.. hope this gives a bit of hope to you guys.
can anybody explain the problem though...i.e why it happened.
Question: are you in the target audience for high-end intelligence methods or in the target audience to have a completely new and evel exploits tested against you?
The fact that it was a spam makes me wonder: they may have tried something with the User Data Header which looks more obnoxious on a Nokia or so, and inadvertently crashed the Radio Stack on your box. If this is the case, the interesting question is whether this provides what called an 'arbitrary code' buffer overflow. If (big IF) so, one can hack our Modem parts remotely. If this is the case, the attacker would still need to hack the main processor from the modem part over a few serial lines. But this would be an interesting challenge, and when succeeded, one would get a major round of applause at a hacker convention.
Let's not all go nuts, but lets be aware of strange RSU crashes: Once is an accident, twice is coincidence, three times is enemy action.
The fact that I received a spam SMS (I believe) has no bearing on the problem I encountered. I seriously don't think that the text mesasage was the cause of the fault but just an incident that occured leading up to the fault.. I'm sure that somebody telling me I had won 10K and asking me to ring a £1.90 per min number didn't intensionally add code to the text to crash the xda.
As you said there seems to be a problem with the radio stack.. which could be related to opening a text or deleting it or something totally different.
For the records I'm using O2 v21 of the radio stack.

QTEK S200 Bluetooth trouble, os runs slow also?

Hi, this is my first post on this forum after going through it for days, and i think i can ask this question without being referred to a wiki or previous post related to my problem. Here goes:
So i just bought a (second hand) QTEK S200. Now, when the guy i bought it from demonstrated it worked flawlessly, but when i got home and reset the whole thing, i can't get bluetooth to work properly.
Let me just note that i've worked with plenty pda's before and have a pretty good (intermediate) knowledge about bluetooth (had a nokia 6680 before, bluetooth heaven btw).
So when i go to settings>connections>bluetooth and i turn bluetooth on (wich works, the blue leds blinks) i try to install a few bluetooth devices (none installed so far), so i click devices>new partnership. It starts to search for devices and show them with theire mac address, he doesn't want to show the device name like all bluetooth enabled device do.
But ok, nevermind that it could be somekind of feature, you never know. So ok i recognize the device i want to add (only two showing, the gps and my pc) and click on it to install it. It asks for the pass, and here i notice that the blue led isn't blinking anymore, so i enter the correct password for the gps (i've added him thousands of times on my ex-cellphone and my GF's cellphone, the code is 0000, like almost all gps mouse) but then it says that the password is incorrect. I try multiple times and nothing.
So ok, i notice the flashing blue led stopped so i re-enable the thing and try again, this multiple times again with the same result.
But then i tried tricking it to keep the blue led flashing, i was trying to make the pda connect to the internet through usb, and that way i got in the settings>connections>connections menu. When i press the 'Add a new modem connection' link you can select a modem that runs on bluetooth, so i got the idea to try and add the gps through this menu. This time it worked, the devices found showed the correct names, and i could add them OK.
So happy as i was i added the com ports and such, all worked ok. Then i started tomtom6, all good, i added the gps with no problems, but when i actually got to navigate, the bluetooth connection dropped constantly, always like: no gps device found for like 40 seconds, then it resumes the navigation and 5 seconds later the connection gets dropped again, so this goes on in a loop forever i guess (tried it about an hour).
Oh, and working with that Comm Manager program doesn't help, i don't think it even works properly, that program doesn't know if the bluetooth is running or not, it just remember the state the button was in last, or something, cause it almost always indicates that the bluetooth is running without it actually running, so i click on it, it 'shuts down' the bluetooth, and when i click on it again, the bluetooth then works for real.
So my conclusion was, i need to get a working firmware or whatever there is some software-related problem here. Because the hardware does actually work, maybe not for long, but it does when it does.
Also, i feell like the pda is running in slowmo, slow reaction times (i know it's not a uber fast device, but sometimes it's really ridiculous how long i have to wait for a program to boot up, or just pressing the start button)
So i checked out the wiki to see if i have a G3 or G4 chip, so won't ruin the s200 when flashing it.
But i just can't make out if i have the G3 or G4. I suppose i have the G3 because SPL shows: 2.09.0000 (all zero's, but 4 of them) but the IPL shows 2.09
everywhere i read about those digits they always compare it to *.*.0001 for the spl and ipl. But there is no 1 at the end! Does this 1 matter? Or is it just the 4 digits at the end?
So this is what my screen shows on the boot up:
IPL 2.09
SPL 2.09.0000
GSM 02.07.20
OS 2.9.7.24
I think this is pretty old.
And another problem (this just doesn't end!) the SD card reader doesn't always show the storage card! I mean like, this is so basic, i don't understand why it doesn't, i've tried with multiple cards, on my pc it works but on the S200 it doesn't.
I hope someone can help me.
I'm also looking into unlock the CID first, and ofcourse it all depends on the type of chip i use, can somebody please confirm what i have?
Also, since all the roms have been removed, and there are soo many, wich is the right one for me? What are those AKU roms? Are they compatible with g3 chips? I don't really know the difference, how does this work?
/edit: ok found out what those aku roms (just updates?), but what then is the difference with the other roms available? And the sd card reader still doesn't work, it's been hours now, i've tried everything. Please someone, help!
Maybe i should shorten my first message:
Bluetooth drops the connection constantly, when i search to pair a device on the s200, when the search is over, the bluetooth shuts down (blue led stops flashing) and i can't add the devices it found, wich is logic, how can you make a connection when bluetooth is disabled? How do i keep bluetooth enabled no matter what? While still being able to shut it down manually.
Comm Manager doesn't work properly (bluetooth shows on when it's off and vice versa)
My SD card reader suddenly doesn't want to work, tried multiple cards, and simultaniously checking them on my computer card reader.
Sometimes slow respondtime.
I've tried everything multiple times, with multiple hard resets.
There's no software installed, everything been tested on a 'clean machine'.
Would upgrading the ROM (wich rom?) solve my problems? And how would i go about that? I've read the wiki but i'm none the wiser (half of the links don't work, i've read the post that everything's been taken down)
Why thank you for all the help. Thought i would at least get a "sorry but it seems your ... is defect you will have to replace it" or "here [link] you will find similar stories with a possible solution"
anyways, to update my post, i rma'd my s200 and it's been two months and two weeks since.. is that normal?

Radio problems

I have a M3100 orange uk. i think the radio rom has gone tits up so to speak. it looses signal in the middle of calls and shows as if its lost the network, sometimes when i reboot it it says NO GSM instead of the radio version and sometimes it works.
i have tried radios
1.38
1.35
1.27
1.07
the orignal radio that comes with the orange m3100 is 1.06 but i cannot flash that to my phone as it says "device communications error". It might be something with my bootloader being 1.11 or 1.09.
there the only ones i can flash to it, but i am starting to think its a hopeless cause now. can anyone shed any light on it or is it as good as bricked?
thanks all

Whilst many folks think software, I often think hardware first - particularly if the usual software checks have been done - hard reset etc. So I just wonder given the intermittent nature of the problem, whether you may have a simple loose internal connector - of which there are quite a few. If it's out of warranty I think I'd have it dismantled and re-seat all connector blocks.
I begining to see more and more posts where people take apart and re-assemble and various odd problems have disappeared that a hard reset did not previously fix. When I first dis-assembled mine I was surprised how easily some of those connectors came off very easily and it does not surprise me that folks with speaker problems and screen issues trace it to loose connectors.
Mike
well as i have flashed it, its out of warrenty from HTC europe isn't it?

Dead telephone on Hermes but everything else works

I have a Hermes (Orange SPV 3100 but unlocked). The phone has stopped working but everything else is fine.
I've tried putting other sim cards into it, cleaned all the sim contacts etc with no success at all. As far as it's concerned, there is no valid connection. Phone and data connections don't work. All the Windows settings and programs run fine, it's just the phone that doesn't so I have a pda without a phone! I wasn't trying to flash a rom - the op system is all as original except for the unlock.
I don't think it's worth enough to pay for a professional repair so any suggestions for tracing and curing the problem and hints as to whether its likely to be a faulty connection, faulty parts or software problem?
Thanks.
I have the exact same phone, and similar problem. The difference is my phone is not completely unusable, it sometimes works for a while and sometimes doesnt.
I have just - 10 mins ago - flashed a new radio rom to see if it helps and so far (10 minutes!), so good. But I will need to leave it for a couple of days to see if it works properly.
Is there an "X" beside the signal icon? Also have you checked the Comm Manager and disable the phone and enable it again?
Ah well I didnt need to leave it for a couple of days, its not working again even with new radio rom.
Ive tried new o/s, new bootloader and new radio but still the same problem, nothing else to try really ?
(btw: Mine usually has an exclaimation mark next to signal strength.)
Carthief When did the problem first start occurring? Did you flash a radio/OS ROM and it started to happen, or did it just happen out of the blue?
Sorry I did not see this post...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=562486
I don't know dude. Maybe one of the senior members can help out.

I will check tomorrow. I am using a different phone at the moment and have left the Hermes at the office.
Hi Shawn, yeah that post covers when my phones problem started - I hadnt flashed anything recently when it started messing up.
I've tried tonight;
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_UpgradeProblems
Problem 5:
METHOD 1
But I didn't flash the patched radio.
Phone is working at the moment... I'll update if it is still working or not tomorrow, if its still working maybe Batxda could try it out as well

Update:
--------------
Phone worked all night, and this morning, but froze up this afternoon and needed rebooting. It's currently working ... but probably not for long! My battery is running out very fast as well.

Hi again. Yes, there is an "x" beside the signal icon (normally meaning that phone is turned off) and also beside the connectivity icon (two horiz arrows and a "x" meaning no active connection). Also, I've just noticed that both of those icons no longer respond to stylus taps. All the other icons do.
I've tried turning the phone on via Setup > Connections > Comms and Setup > Personal > phone. Neither work, in fact, they do not respond at all.
I haven't tried the cure that Carthief tried but then, I've never flashed any roms on this phone either. I am apprehensive about that because I haven't done it before so, if that's the solution, I would need to find a free evening and do lots of reading.
BTW, the unlocking was done ages ago professionally, not by me.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Maybe I missed it but I did not see any mention of your doing a Hard Reset. (I assume you have tried soft resets) In general if the problem persists after this it rules out most software issues. I also think it's worth a try because of your comment about the icon being unresponsive.
Mike
Mike
I had done a hard reset but, just to be sure, I've just done it again. After the first it locked up at the password screen so I did a few more. Next, I let the Orange config run through. With the third, I removed the battery before Orange it did its thing. Both the same - no active phone but no lock-up either.
Icons on top bar still not active and x's against them.
When I go to settings > Personal > Comms, the phone icon is highlighted and appears to be "on" (no "x") but the top bar icons still show that it isn't. When the comms phone icon is clicked, the cross appears and the phone is, presumably, turned off and can't be turned on again.
When I go to settings > Personal > Phone, it says that the phone is off, would I like to turn it on. Click yes but it doesn't work.
BTW, I'm using an O2 sim card which works perfectly in a NIKI (touch dual).
I hope this is a software not hardware problem. Is there any point in flashing a new radio or complete windows rom? If so, which one would you recommend (it's a minefield for one of little brain)
Many thanks.
B
I did think you might already have tried a hard reset. In general that tends to point towards hardware, BUT corruption of the ROMs can occur. Unfortunately that is not my area of expertise. Hopefully someone will recommend something here. You could always look on http://www.mrvanx.org/thg/ making sure you have Hardspl installed.
Mike
Hi all, my phone is still not working completely but it does seem to be staying alive for longer periods now.
I have just downloaded the latest (from Oct. 2007) software upgrade from Orange for the Hermes - I think it is windows mobile 5, not sure yet. I cant install it tonight but Im going to try that tommorow.
I downloaded the Orange update but it wouldn't load on my phone. all I got was an error message which said it was the wrong rom for the phone. I don't know whether that's because I've had it unlocked or maybe my rom is newer than the update. anyway, I'm no further forward.
I've just noticed that, in Settings > Device Information, it is blank against the radio version and the Protocol version and that there is no IMEI listed either. I guess that means the radio is corrupted so I will try installing a new one. It is op version 14.123.1.614 and ROM version 1.23.61.4. Which radio is recommended.
What does the missing IMEI number mean or is that also connected with the missing radio?
B
Hi Batxda, I dont know which radio to recommend, mine is Radio version: 1.47.30.10 and ROM version: 3.54.255.3
My phone has now been working for over 24hrs, battery has stayed charged as well... so I haven't installed the Orange rom yet.
I bought a new phone having pretty much given up on this one... and now it seems to be working again!
Nope. Not working. Ran for over 48hrs but locked/froze up today with calls going straight to answerphone, battery drained from 70% to 20% in about two hours as well!
My last attempt is going to be running the phone with no memory card in, and no sim card with phone disabled. Will report back.
Have you had any luck Batxda ?
Radio flashes all lock up - help please

Sorry to hear that. I've had different but similarly unsuccessful times. I hope your experiment goes well.
I flashed with HardSPL (SPL-2.10.Olipro) then tried to flash a Radio.
1st I tried v 1.11.00.00 running from the PC. It froze so I had to unplug it. That messed everything up and I ended up with it stuck on the bootloader screen (Type 2a) so I used mtty and found that command "set 16 0" worked so I could return to WM5.
2nd I tried to flash radio v 1.47.00.10 from the SD card. It started OK, got to about 20% and stopped. That was at 11:15. Its now 13:30, 2.25 hours later and it hasn't moved in that time. I am going to have to stop it but I'm sure it will end up corrupted again.
H E L P anybody, how can I flash a radio to this damned thing?
BTW, it is a Hermes 100.

Batxda when I reflashed a new radio I just followed the guide here:
http://www.mrvanx.org/thg/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=18&Itemid=26
It sounds like you've gone through the same procedure as me so you've probably already followed that guide...
I don't know what to suggest, but if it was me, and the radio wouldn't flash, I would (being a bit dim ) try it a few more times until I was exhausted...
I've just rebooted mine to see if I could provoke it to do anything with no sim/memory cards in. It gets to the password entry screen and tells me I've entered the wrong password but I know its the right password !! Does anyone know where/how these phones store the password ?

I have a AT&T 8525 Hermes that was having No GSM issues.
I'm not sure if both of you seen the No GSM message when booting the phone (when it was bootable) & if you did, here's what I did to get the phone working again.
I removed the battery & pressed hard against the back stainless steel plate especially around the area near the battery contacts. It worked for mine & the No GSM issue would go away. If it happened again, then I repeat the same procedure & it works again.
My conclusion is that the GSM chip has broken or loose contacts with the motherboard so as long as the contacts is good, that keeps the radio working. BTW, this phone was dropped before & after that, this issue started happening.
Lastly, I'm not sure if your issue is really with the password...that's just a symptom of something else that is wrong with the system...not sure if it's entirely software or perhaps hardware or combination of both.

No, I haven't seen that message.
Since the last post, I've tried to flash various radio roms, two WM6 roms and what XDA says is the original WM5 Orange SVP M3100 rom for my phone (v slightly different version number though). All of them hang at around 11% or give an error message. I've ended up with a Dopod start screen (from one of the WM6 attempts) and a funny mixture of colours but I can still start Windows so I've got a pda with no phone access.
Taking your message on board, I'm starting to think that there is a hardware fault preventing the radio from being recognised. That is unless there is something fundamental that, being a n00b at this, I'm not doing. I've put Hard SPL on the phone, flashed roms and failed, reset it with MTTY (set 16 0) and used a variety of radio and main roms. Is there anything else I should have done?
I'm about to give up and see what it's value is and then see if I can get a hardware repair (if it's worth it). Otherwise, I've heard that some fetes have a throw the mobile competition ......... !!!!!!

Dopod838pro NO GSM problem

i have my dopod 838 pro running on Schap's WM6 Pro 4.30 ROMs. it had been all right for pass 5 month since i upgrade the original WM5 to WM6. and since then i never flash it.
Yesterday afternoon, i can still use it to receive call. but at night. i found out that the phone doesn't have any signal on GSM network. when i double check it, it asking me to key in sim card password and said "unknown sim status"
if i key in the wrong password, it will state that my password is wrong. but if i key in the correct password, it still asking me for password. and stay on the same page no matter how many times i key in the password.
i already do hard reset. but the problem still exits. these were info when i start the phone.
M 05
S 04 NO GSM
B 06 D3.62
and these were info from bootloader
HERM 100
IPL-1.04
HERM100
SPL-2.10.Olipro
i very confuse with a lot of help over internet in thread for those no GSM problem. but i can't seems find any similar problem with mine.
WIFI and bluetooth were working fine. i can still goes into the Today screen and access every other things normally.
Please help me.
Do you know what Radio was on the device before the no GSM?
If you try to update your radio more than likely it won't update and freeze at a low percentage of completion. Sorry to say the radio on the motherboard is dead or dying. Happens frequently on the Hermes and the only way to fix it is to get a new motherboard. Happened on mine - would work fine then the GSM would start dropping out and reconnecting during the day. Upon reboot it would get the NO GSM message. Turn off leave battery out then try again - sometimes would start up then it would just die. After replacement of motherboard it just works.
No amount of flashing of ROMS including or not including the radio will fix it - the chipset in the HERMES is the weak link and they eventually just go. Either the solder has developed cracks from charging (heat) or flex.
Sorry.....

i not pretty sure . but it was original radio. i didn't flash radio before.
but i had downloaded the new version radio. successfully flashed it. but still no GSM.
STIM141: i think you are quire right. i had inquiries some shop of phone repair and have describe them my problem. since my phone die without me doing anythings to it. they pretty confirm it's the mother board die. they said the only way is to repair it and replace motherboard.
The best way to fix it cheaply is to find a donor phone thats confirmed working with a guarantee on eBay. Something that beat up, maybe the screen has problems and swap it out yourself. Its pretty easy to replace and you can do it in about 10 to 15 minutes tops. Need a couple of tools but they can be found locally. Should cost no more than about 30-35 dollars if you are patient. Next would be to scrap the phone for parts - but if the motherboard is bad you probably won't get very much unless you part it out and just wait for individual buyers.
