I have seen various makes / models on the market and I am thinking about a
SanDisk Ultra II 512 card
Does anyone have any experiance of this model
Ashby
512 SD card
what about a 1gb card has anyone got any suggestions on which one to get the o2 data support said that there are 1gb sd cards out there but all they've tested is up to 512 mb. They are firmly against the MMC cards but they couldn't explain why. The MMC card is cheaper.

The 1-GB SD cards only became available for purchase a little over a week ago.
The MMC is cheaper because it has a lower maximum transfer rate. But I have found many stores where the price of MMC and SD cards are the same.
Ultra II sd cards as far as i know only run at ultra speed if your sd-slot support it
ok guys any idea
how much a 1gb sd disk will cost, compatability and where from

As far as I know, the only 1-GB SD card brand available now is SanDisk. The price is around US$395. Other brands will soon follow.
with the price of 1GB compared to 512 and 256 then i'd rather have more cards and switch between them like
1 for goat and sheep p0rn collection
1 for mp3 music
1 gps maps (if i had a gps device)
1 for programs

totally agree
as only one has just come out it's likely to be quite expensive
but if people keep a look out they can let us know when other models come out and where to get the best prices
failing that they could swap their donkey porn collection that takes up less memory !
I use a Kingston 512mB SD, works well in the XDA II, no speed problems or loss of data. I use it mainly for camera images and large data files but also for my regular backup (Sprite Backup Premium) and several applications which I don't use often.

I have a 512mb ultra ii on order, for quicker access to gps maps and voice etc, and should receive it next week. I'll try to post back here when I've tried it, assuming that there is any discernable difference.
frankly speaking I use regular sandisk 512MB SD card only due to high price for everything with Kingston sticker on it, IMHO kingston has not been manufacturing memory cards for years but branding other manufacturers products, including memory ...
one thing that is of interest to me is .... whether these sandisk ultra II SD cards are really faster and to waht extent, especially considering the fact what is the SD card port in XDA / XDA II, i.e. what is the internal port speed limit as compared with new and speedy cards ??
regards, monika

I've just received the ultra ii and although I haven't USED it yet, here are some benchmarks...
Internal Integral SanDisk Ultra II
Read MB/s 1.55 0.13 0.20
Write MB/s 0.10 0.02 0.68
Min Read ms 0.25 0.25 0.25
Max Read ms 1.50 9.75 8.5
Ave Read ms 0.32 4.14 2.43
Total Read ms 813 10368 6089
Min Write ms 0.25 0.75 0.28
Max Write ms 165 108 6.75
Ave Write ms 4.87 28.85 0.72
Total Write ms 12310 72246 1810
I've only done a quick test abd should really have repeated them several times and taken averages. However, this clearly shows that the Ultra is built to WRITE FAST, even blowing away my XDA II's internal storage.
sandisk 256MB
I just bought my second sandisk 256MB works fine for me, i bought it for my new NAVMAN 4410
I use a Kingston 512Mb
Works great, using it mostly for watching divx but I also have some music and GPS maps on it. In Sweden Kingston is much cheaper then Sandisk.
The only strange thing is that Im only able to use 488Mb...
The card was preformated so maybe thats a reason...
Steves digicams did a big test some time ago on compactflash memorys and the ultra memorys wasnt always faster. I would save the money and buy regular, its fast enough for the programs in the XDAII.
/miki
seem to recall that all sd cards give you less then they are labeld because of the secure encryption features which make SD cards different from mmc cards apart from being a bit thicker
has,nt anybody got any price,s?
I paid £129 through eBay.
Sandisk 512 Mb for € 159,-
www.geheugenkaart.be
So around £129 for an Ultra II or around £107 for a 'normal' one - I know which one I'd rather have!
thanks i think its time i get my wallet out.hehe
HTC Wizard: early photos and specs [ 02:00 ]
Source: http://www.pocketpcitalia.com/
The web site Pocket PC Italia has posted early photos and specs of HTC Wizard communicator, which is positioned to replace HTC Magician(the model known as T-Mobile MD Compact, I-Mate Jam or QTek S100 depending on the operator). The communicator is powered by Windows Mobile 5.0. Its QWERTY-keyboard is pulled out from one side in an unusual manner. Besides HTC Wizard has stereo speakers and a 2.1-megapixel camera with the flash. As this info appeared before the official release, the specs can still be changed.
The specs of HTC Wizard:
* GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
* EDGE
* Processor OMAP 850 by Texas Instruments
* Memory - 128 MB ROM, 64 MB RAM
* Screen – 2.8” TFT, QVGA
* Interface - Mini USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11b and IrDA
* Expansion slot for Mini SD cards
That'll be a shame if it only has a MiniSD hole. I'm sure the 4 & 8GB SD cards will start being available when the Wizard is released. You would have though 128MB too.
Oh well, fingers crossed
Here is the actual link -> http://www.pocketpcitalia.com/cms3/templates/PPC-NEWS.ASP?articleid=2222&zoneid=1
The Processoer seams nice:
http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/wt...00&path=templatedata/cm/product/data/omap_850
Hope it also uses the complete 802.11a/b/g Functions and not only b.
The chip has also USB-Host!
Both together with Windows Mobile 5.0 and 128MB Rom would be enough for me to switch from my MDA compact to this baby.
But would prefer it without keyboard...
Not sure about the processor - max speed of 200MHz puts me off.
The IPAQ 6340 has a similar Processor (OMAP1510) also with only 200MHz.
In the OMAP1510 is a ARM925 integrated
In the OMAP850 its a ARM926
Only found this benchmarks:
http://www.ppcreviews.net/news_8130.html
But the OMAP1510 runs only at 168MHz so [email protected] should be a bit faster
XScale MHz != OMAP MHz
XScale MHz != OMAP MHz

Ti seems to be pushing this mode of thinking, after all the processor has multiple cores dedicated to separate functions.
However in real life situations, OMAP MHz are exactly XScale MHz, look at the benchmarks. You won't be running FPSCE on OMAP any time soon. Just because it has separate cores for DSP doesn't mean that other devices do their radio DSP in software on the main processor, I can't think of one that does. The only special thing that the OMAP can do is parallel video/audio decoding, but then who runs something processor intensive at the same time as watching video? A 400MHz XScale makes a better job of it in S/W, and is not tied to specific codecs; plus many video chipsets/cores offer some form of video helper functions in hardware too (although it seems certain chipset manufacturers don't want developers to use the features )
The only advantage I can see for OMAP is the cost to manufacture, which of course isn't passed on to us consumers...
rough release date
How long do they usually take to release these things after the public find out about them?

Here's another link I found on the Italian website. This should also be the new HTC phone, but doesn't look exactly as the previous posted link?!? (By the way I don't speak Italian. So can't really understand anything else than HTC and the specs.) :?

I've been walking around with one in my pocket for a few days, it feels kind of plastic, and the keyboard does not slide out in a nicely straight way, it can easily go crooked.
putting it in your pocket always gets it half slid out.
messing up the auto screen switch between landscape/portrait.
and it feels slow.
...
looked inside, it is actually just like the typhoon/sp3 smartphone, same rom layout, and same type of protections.
there is also a smartphone model coming out later this year, that is the same device, but as a smartphone. no touch screen, phone keyboard. 240x320 screen, with wifi.
that, for a smartphone is a really nice device.

I would like to ask whether it is possible to extend the RAM on the MDA I from 32 MB to 64 MB? And if, if it is worth the effort.
I bought an additional used MDA with a crashed display for examining purposes and experimenting. E.g. to learn first how to open the device (without damaging my "good" MDA).
Now I'm already quite good trained in opening the back shell of the MDA with my thumbnail
It is possible to extend RAM.
There are a few firms, that are doing this job, but i think it's quite expensive.
Doing it yourself would be very riscy. You need to have goot soldering experiences, and knowledge in electronic. So i would stay with 32 MB, or search for another MDA with already 64 MB...

The new Dell Axim X51v has 256MB RAM on WM5.0. Why the hell didn't the 'Worlds' Most Powerful fu..ing phone' get this?
HTC..you are are truly wicked!!!
You build the Dell Axim don't you? :? Microsoft..you test your software don't you? Stupid question.. you obviously don't, but are quick to charge for incomplete and unpolished software. In contrast you are quick to prosecute people who actually copy your buggy software.
HTC...how can you make new geneeration devices with under-powered bits? 64 MB RAM? C'mon!! Couldn't you have at least given us 128MB RAM so we don't all worry about memory management? Are you listening? Aaarrghh... who cares right  ??!!??
I can't make up my mind if the Universal is an excellent technological achievement or an overpriced, overhyped piece of poorely stiched together meta-technologies.
So now, I have to learn to become a technology guru, not because I want to, just so I can use my bloody phone. :x
I give up.
No need to have a fit mate!
You've got your numbers mixed up. The Dell Axim has 256MB of ROM, and in fact has 64MB of RAM (same as the Universal).
Windows Mobile 5 introduced persistant storage which basically means everything is stored in ROM, rather than RAM as with WM2003. This means you now have the full amount of RAM available to you, and 64MB is loads!
There's also the issue that if you double the RAM size you double the memory power requirements which affects battery life.
Take a look at this article which explains it all a lot better than I can, and you'll see it's actually a really good idea to have 64MB:
http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2005/07/14/438991.aspx
Persistant Storage
no: 1
Thank you for your informative reply & I found the provided link very useful too. Well, they should have still given us at least what the Dell has got. Except for the keyboard and phone, we've not got much more and we pay more than double! Anyway, thanks again.
I'll discuss these issues with my shrink at our next meeting, I just can't control myself.
What is in the Dell vs. other PDA's that HTC makes is not really something that is comparable. Dell pays HTC for making the Axims. I imagine that if Dell is willing to spend the money on higher specs, they can do that. HTC doesn't decide what's in the Dell Axim, Dell does (for the most part). HTC then engineers and builds the devices.
On the other hand, HTC makes the JasJar for i-mate. i-mate decides the specs they want (with some input from the phoner companies I'm sure) and they pay HTC to make their PDA's. So, just because HTC makes the PDA's doesn't mean they are all going to be same spec-minded or the same cost. It's up to the "brand" (HP, Dell, i-mate etc) what HTC makes for them.
As far as deciding whether the Universal is an excellent technological achievement or an overpriced, overhyped piece of poorly stiched together meta-technologies, it's a little bit of both. It is an excellent technological achievement AND it is overpriced

It's a big shame!!!
They promised us heaven, and I find myself in hell!!
This device is a dream, but without minimum 128MB, better 256 MB of RAM, becomes hell, and useless!!!!!!
256Mb of Ram?
I have a (old) pentium 4 laptop that works well enough with 256Mb of Ram. Doesn't that seem a bit excessive for a PPC, especially as your battery would only last for about 93 seconds?!
As i said, 128mb, or 256 MB, do you have a JasJar? Do you know how it feels, to spend 1.094 euro plus 174 for and SD card ultra speed 2 GB, an not being able to use it at all, with the very simple applications? My Treo 650 runs much better!!!
And then, I shouldn't cry for at least 128 MB???
@trendstyle,
Sell the device.
Anyways, what is it that the 64MB RAM of the JJ does not permit you to do? Why on earth would you need 128MB of RAM? I multi-task extensively with the device and yet face no memory errors. Are you trying to run Photoshop or something like that on your device?
As another forum member has rightly pointed out, what on earth would you need 256Mb RAM for??? It wouldn't even last those 93 seconds!!!
Word of advice to other people who want to crib about the device. Before you start getting all nutty about spending this much and that much on a device, do a thorough research or wait for some reviews. You will save yourself and others the agony and disappointment.
My 0.002.
I entirely agree with Universaldoc.
While listening to the media player and running two processor and memory intensive applications Planmaker and TextMaker simultaneously I still have 10MB of RAM to spare. Why do I need more RAM. I am to use my JJ practically and not to see what amount of applications I need to open simultaneously to kill the JJ. More RAM is technically possible. But do I need it at the expense of battery life. A big "NO" for me at least.
Regards
Do you?
10 Mb are enough?
There are some games, that requires 15 MB of free RAM!!
And in a super top device, this should be acceptable???
Give a look here....
http://www.expansys.com/forumthread.asp?code=119353&thread=42
Then tell me if I am the only one....
I change a mobile phone every 4 months, buying always what is the top of the technology...
And believe me, at the moment, jasjar doesn't deliver what I-mate promised...
I look forward to a new rom, solving memory problems!
A new rom that came with 256mb memory with it, now there's something....
The universal is a good device and memory is fine on it you can have loads of apps running and it still runs faultlessly. This is not a lap top, if you ned one of those buy one nor is this a mobile it's a great device that tries to accomodate both, sure it could have more memory but then you'd be *****ing that " it's primarily a phone, why is the battery life so bad, it runs out half way through the day and i miss loads of important calls"

Yes, I do thanks, and if you "can't use it at all, with the very simple applications" then I'd suggest there's something actually, properly, really, honestly, very wrong with yours?! (Especially if your Treo 650 runs much better)
I know people are now used to computing with 3Ghz AMD64's with 1Gig RAM, and 100's of Gigs of HD space, but let's be realistic here, for a device of it's size, it's fantastic.
Given 128Mb RAM, I'm sure some people would only move on to bemoaning the fact that it 'only' runs at 520Mhz, it 'only' has 128Mb Rom, it 'only' has 802.11b, it's 'only' got 1.3 megapixels, etc, etc, etc.
The JasJar is not perfect, and there's a thread in this forum where people are already posting their JasJar 2 wishlists, but in my personal opinion (and I'm sure many agree), it's currently the best PDA/Phone available, it has near flawless performance for my purposes, and I for one am more than happy with it.

I was reading the Universal hardware specs, we could upgrade the DOC to a bigger size!!! But we need a hardware techy to solder it.

I agree, and from the post where there is the disassembly guide, the RAM looks totally different!!
And 509$ is a big challenge.
apparently, the Fujitsu UMPC that the RAM is for uses 214 pin Micro DIMM Ram. All the info I've read around the internet says this, but I haven't been able to find a disassembly guide (of the Fuji UMPC) to confirm this visually. As to the picture on the Fuji website, all of their ram upgrades use the same pic. Am I willing to be the first to drop the cash to find out? No sir, but hopefully someone will be able to show a pic, or actually pull the trigger and buy one.
I have no idea. I just did a search for 2GB MicroDIMM and got this result in google. Hardware experts should say if it is compatible. But if within MicroDIMM, there are different pin types then it is not good. It just leads to confusion for the consumers.
i've send a email to the support for information about this memory module
to be continue
Pic of the shift RAM attached.
You'll see that the connector is on the side, and it lays flat and clips on to the mobo.
What we need is a picture of the RAM from inside a fujitsu p1610 UMPC. Anyone find a pic, or know someone who has one?

Unfortunately it is incompatible with the Shift.

It seems like some other suppliers also has 1 gig, with 214pins connector.
But unfortunately it seems like no one has made a 2 gb which fits.

as almost everyone in this forum, I'm eagerly waiting for a 2GB memory module to install in my Shift. I'm sure that a 2GB memory module would make Vista really fly and take a lot of the disk-swapping out of it.
I just emailed a good friend who works for a memory company, asking if/when they will be selling a 2GB part, based on the specs that were published above.
Let's see what he says, and I'll update then.
