best 512 SD card - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

I have seen various makes / models on the market and I am thinking about a
SanDisk Ultra II 512 card
Does anyone have any experiance of this model
Ashby

512 SD card
what about a 1gb card has anyone got any suggestions on which one to get the o2 data support said that there are 1gb sd cards out there but all they've tested is up to 512 mb. They are firmly against the MMC cards but they couldn't explain why. The MMC card is cheaper.

The 1-GB SD cards only became available for purchase a little over a week ago.
The MMC is cheaper because it has a lower maximum transfer rate. But I have found many stores where the price of MMC and SD cards are the same.

Ultra II sd cards as far as i know only run at ultra speed if your sd-slot support it

ok guys any idea
how much a 1gb sd disk will cost, compatability and where from
cheers john

As far as I know, the only 1-GB SD card brand available now is SanDisk. The price is around US$395. Other brands will soon follow.

with the price of 1GB compared to 512 and 256 then i'd rather have more cards and switch between them like
1 for goat and sheep p0rn collection
1 for mp3 music
1 gps maps (if i had a gps device)
1 for programs

totally agree
as only one has just come out it's likely to be quite expensive
but if people keep a look out they can let us know when other models come out and where to get the best prices
failing that they could swap their donkey porn collection that takes up less memory !

I use a Kingston 512mB SD, works well in the XDA II, no speed problems or loss of data. I use it mainly for camera images and large data files but also for my regular backup (Sprite Backup Premium) and several applications which I don't use often.

I have a 512mb ultra ii on order, for quicker access to gps maps and voice etc, and should receive it next week. I'll try to post back here when I've tried it, assuming that there is any discernable difference.

frankly speaking I use regular sandisk 512MB SD card only due to high price for everything with Kingston sticker on it, IMHO kingston has not been manufacturing memory cards for years but branding other manufacturers products, including memory ...
one thing that is of interest to me is .... whether these sandisk ultra II SD cards are really faster and to waht extent, especially considering the fact what is the SD card port in XDA / XDA II, i.e. what is the internal port speed limit as compared with new and speedy cards ??
regards, monika

I've just received the ultra ii and although I haven't USED it yet, here are some benchmarks...
Internal Integral SanDisk Ultra II
Read MB/s 1.55 0.13 0.20
Write MB/s 0.10 0.02 0.68
Min Read ms 0.25 0.25 0.25
Max Read ms 1.50 9.75 8.5
Ave Read ms 0.32 4.14 2.43
Total Read ms 813 10368 6089
Min Write ms 0.25 0.75 0.28
Max Write ms 165 108 6.75
Ave Write ms 4.87 28.85 0.72
Total Write ms 12310 72246 1810
I've only done a quick test abd should really have repeated them several times and taken averages. However, this clearly shows that the Ultra is built to WRITE FAST, even blowing away my XDA II's internal storage.

sandisk 256MB
I just bought my second sandisk 256MB works fine for me, i bought it for my new NAVMAN 4410

I use a Kingston 512Mb
Works great, using it mostly for watching divx but I also have some music and GPS maps on it. In Sweden Kingston is much cheaper then Sandisk.
The only strange thing is that Im only able to use 488Mb...
The card was preformated so maybe thats a reason...
Steves digicams did a big test some time ago on compactflash memorys and the ultra memorys wasnt always faster. I would save the money and buy regular, its fast enough for the programs in the XDAII.
/miki

seem to recall that all sd cards give you less then they are labeld because of the secure encryption features which make SD cards different from mmc cards apart from being a bit thicker

has,nt anybody got any price,s?

I paid £129 through eBay.

Sandisk 512 Mb for € 159,-
www.geheugenkaart.be

So around £129 for an Ultra II or around £107 for a 'normal' one - I know which one I'd rather have!

thanks i think its time i get my wallet out.hehe

I dont think you can use 1MB card on your meching, but if you can i dont mind buying one as well
You absolutely can use a 1GB SD card in the II - I have been using a SanDisk 1GB SD card in mine for several months now and it works flawlessly. It is not the fastest card available, but I have never seen any adverse performance from it. Granted, I do not watch movies with my II on a regular basis.
Is there no comparision available of the write/read-speed of the different 1 gb-cards??
not that i've seen try searching on google
or try looking in the benchmark part of pocket mechanics if they have some 1GB cards there
I'd alsolike to buy 1Gb SD CARD. Does anybody now if the following are any good and if they would work in a XDA1
http://www.memory4more.com/show.cgi?inhalt.htm has 1GB SD-Card Fast 45x Transcend Ultra Performance 45X for 103Euro +tax +shipping
http://www.aria.co.uk has brandless 1GB SD CARD for £48.5 + shipping
2 512 or 4 256 would be a better path imho
first of all with the few 1GB cards the lack of competition would mean slow speed and high price
higher then more of the other cards
a flash card have a limited number of writes before it join its ancestors in the world after having a flash card of 1GB is a bigger investment so having it being worn out is more of a drag

Slow SD interface?

I have a Sandisk Wifi + 256 mb card in my MDA Compact and eventhough the driver and such work flawlessly, the wifi performance is very disappointing. With an internet download benchmark I got about 26KB/s througput. I knew the card wasn't going to be fast before I bought it, but I was expecting to get at least something like 100KB/s.
At first I thought the problem was with the card itself, but when I tested an Sandisk Ultra II 256MB SD Memory card with pocket mechanic I noticed that the throughput to the memory card was also very low (0.26MB/s).
The throughput to the supplied mini SD was even worse (0.10MB/s).
Now I am wondering, is there a general problem with the SD bus interface? Can someone verify these results for me?
Or am I mistaken and should I not expect anything more? I did a full SPB benchmark on the device itself and the numbers were even a little better than to some posted in a review.
TIA!
yeah the jam seems to be slow with cards for some reason?!?!
i got a simpletech 10mb read/write one of the fastest and best cards out and i used to get over 1mb read/write on the xda2 with it but on the jam it gets 0.26mb write and 0.78mb read
with my ultra 60x 1gb it only gets 0.23 read and 0.63 write :\
seems so slow
I get similar speeds to this on my XDA II but the SD Card is much faster in an external USB 2.0 reader/writer.
Even worse, I bought a standard speed SanDisk 512k SD card that is so slow, the XDA II can not write to it at all!
I now only buy Ultra 60x or faster SD cards even though you don't get anything like that in performance in the O2 device itself - just reliablilty.
I use an external SD card reader/writer to load it with MP3s etc. I suffer 20 minute backups with Sprite Backup to SD card daily as I have no choice. (I also back up to 2 PCs as well daily - not much faster).

512MB SD: Panasonic Highspeed vs Sandisk UltraII...

Hi guys!
I've got 2 512M SD memory card:
- Sandisk UltraII 512MB
- Panasonic High speed 512MB
...and I've got 2 device:
- i-mate Jam (QTEK S100)
- Canon PowerShot SD300 camera
Waht's the difference between the 2 SD?
In your opinion the speed are identical?
Is it better to put the Sandisk into Jam or into the camera?
Hi
I read a long discussion about SD card speeds on this site ages ago.. as i understand it, PPC can only read and write at a FRACTION of a slow/normal SD cards read/write speed, so it really makes no difference.. might as well put the biggest, cheapest card you can in it as anything alse is a waste of a memory card...
My own limited experince with a few sd cards i have (bog standard up to sandisk xtreeme III) shows no difference in speed across the cards.
Lovely caemra you have by the way

Well... I understand that in ppc I can put the slower one but...
Sandisk Ultra II vs Pnasonic highspeed?
What is the faster? (I'll put the faster in my camera!)

Which Memory Card

Hi guy,
I have just recieved my Mda Vario II from T-Mobile and it great.
I need to get a memory card and cant decide what to go for 1Gb Utra II
or a 2Gb from Sandisk.
I want the extra space of the 2Gb but will the Ultra II being faster be better or does it not matter that much on a pda/phone.
I hope that with your experiences with memory cards someone can recommend the best option.
FIA
Hello mutsoft,
My opinion is that speed of the UltraII won't be noticeable. My choice goes to the extra space of the 2Gig memory.

This is also my opinion. I have a microsd 1 Giga that is already full. Now i'm looking to by a 2GB memory.
Thanks for your responses so far.
The 2Gb size on a single card does seem to be more usefull
and unless there is any technical reason for the faster card
I will go for that.
Wish i'd seen this earlier - just order UltraII 1GB.
Ah well, maybe by the time i fill this one another gig won't be too expensive
Hi a0-0b,
Still not purchased, still not decided.
Although its a little more expensive i am more concerned
about the impact in performance.
If its not noticable then overall per Gb the 2Gb card is better
priced than the Ultra II 1Gb.

4GB microSDhc or 8GB microSDhc

I'm planning to get a microSDhc card for my Jade (HTC Touch 3g).
Can you guys please advice will there is any difference in performance, response time and speed between 4GB microSDhc and 8GB microSDhc.
For the timebeing, I'm using mere 1GB micro SD card and its works great.
I know that both works with Jade, but how about the response time? I'm surely looking for bigger space, but not at the cost of speed and response time.
Thanks!!
HTC (officially) supports only 4Gb SD. Many I know have used 8Gb without problem. Personally I'm using just 4Gb without problem. Response time - blink of an eye, I do not have an empirical engineering measure though. Most of my programs / applications are on SD and the response time are OK.. so far, over a year now, never fail.
I use this one without any problems:
http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B001D0ROGO/ref=ox_ya_oh_product
I have no exact data for response etc. but it is very fast.
I am using an 8gb, I can't compare it to a 4gb since I don't have one.

Thanks Azahidi for the info!!
Even i'm planning to have my most of the programs/appilcations on the storage card, so was wondering about the response time.
On HTC site, they said they have tested 8GB, but didn't mention about the performance.
http://www.htc.com/in/faqs.aspx?p_id=174&cat=270&id=85794&f=t
But, the salesman at the store said 8GB will make ur device slow, which I didn't want for more space.
So, was looking for the expert opinions on this.

Have you guys installed programs/applications on the Storage card?
And is the reponse of those program on SD are marginally slower as compare to similiar application on device memory?
Even I'm looking to bigger space, it helps a lazy person like me to clean the storage after long long time.
How is the access time for data like music/video/documents from SD and how about the stability?
Thanks in advance!!

I installed nearly all programs on my card (see above) and I have no delay or other problems with it. Of course I do never remove it.
Speed for Cards...
most of the new Cards u can use have different "class" of speed, it give class
Class 2: 2 MByte/s - 13x
Class 4: 4 MByte/s - 26x
Class 6: 6 MByte/s - 40x
i use a Toshiba 8GB with Class4 (i pay 8,-EUR at eBay) and this works fine.
The most of the Programms I use, I installed on the Card except Phoneweaver or eqal Software that use direct access to the Sim.
I use for Videos (MusicClips, TV-Series with Subtitle in srt-format and Documentations) the CoreMobileVideoPlayer and the Videos works fluently perfect.
I have a second Device, a HTC Diamond with internal 4GB and to this it is no different with the speed (memory access).
I hope, this helps a little bit

Thank you so much!!
It is a great information you shared and really helpfull for selecting my Storage card.
well i use an 8GB micro sd card and it works like a charm
besides i heard that our jade can hold up to 16 GB's (thats what the folks at htc store told me) not quite sure about it but i guess the more storage u ride the more battery consumption u get
so i guess its fairly enough to stick with 8Gigs.
HTC touch 3G ( jade 110)
Hi guys. (I own htc touch 3g- jada 110) I am using also 8gb SDHC (kingston) class 4 and I recomend this one. Its fast, cheap (ebay- just be aware of some cheap replicas). I have also tried this card on my girlfriend`s htc tytn 2 (kaiser) and worked as well. So highly recomend KINGSTON cards.
I have both the 4gb and 8 gb Sandisk micro sd card. I can't tell the difference in speed and am very happy with the 8 gb card! Am thinking of upgrading to the 16 gb for my movies though!

Let us know your feedback after using 16GB, if things are stable there..... then we might think of switching to 16GB for the obvious reasons...
