Just about to open Windows (on the top floor) and throw this thing through it!
Been waiting for months to upgrade to exec from xda2s, and 18hours after opening the box i'm ready to junk it. Cannot get it to sync at all. Read all the forums, zone alarm off, norton off, tried running as4.1, and still i'm getting dizzy watching this little green wheel going round and round and round and round and round..... 'connecting'
Does anybody have a work around or managed to get it to work. Without this facility the units useless to me, apart from maybe a quick £300 quick profit on ebay.
Help please.
I had a simlar problem, until I reluctantly ditched all my other Active sync partnerships (like my xda2 PPc partnership). then created a new partnership and it worked fine.
Good luck
Hi, Stupid question, but where do the older profiles live on my pc? I've looked in the activesync folder but no clues.
Open Avtivesync, go to file, click on mobile device, check and see what devices you have listed. then go to Delete mobile device.
This realy was a quick fix for me , you should be able to have multiple patnerships, perhaps some one else could suggest a better solution.
Thanks for your advice, but it looks as though I had deleted all previous profiles when I did a clean install of as4.1, and still getting dizzy!
Thought about calling O2, but quickly realised I would have better luck just ringing a random number out of the phone book.
I've tried every combination in the connection settings box, still no joy.
Need a solution soon before I reach for the Scotch and Razor Blades.
I've completely given up with this thing. Managed to get it back in the box (which was a minor challenge compared to getting Activesync to work), somebody please save me from ebay.
Do you have you Exec running in Corporate mode? I found that in this mode it won't sync; you just get "Connecting"...and nothing.
I switch to basic or personal and it syncs with no problem. Myabe this will help.
If the machine you are trying to sync with is connecting to an Exchange Server then you will have difficulties.
Try syncing the calendar, contacts and tasks direct with the exchange server and do the rest (notes etc) with the laptop.
Activesync 4 is so rubbish I have resorted to wirelessly syncing direct to my exchange server.
For a while I was cursing the Exec as I had just got my 2s just how I wanted it when I up(?)graded but I remembered that half the fun of these things is solving the problems, even if it doesn't seem like it at the time!
The main thing that you need to remember with ActiveSync 4.x is that you must install this before connecting your EXEC.
If you don't the microsoft driver gets installed instead (and in my case) no amount of deleting/reinstalling was able to recover the situation.
Whilst I was in the middle of that crisis I did some basic PD to try and rectify. Including
a) Installing AS 4.1 build 4807 on another system (preferably clean installed say XP SP2)
b) trying another cable
c) Doing a hard reset of your device and then repeating above steps
d) (obviously!) removing all previous versions of ActiveSync (also afterwards using regedit to remove any final traces and erasing C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync) and then re-installing
I have tried to include some Device Manager pictures of a working system for reference purposes
Throught trial, and very much swearing at the walls, I've discovered the following:
1. If I have the XDA Exec switched on and connect the USB cable, then I can guarantee a 95% failure to connect.
2. If I turn off the Exec, by the power-switch on side, then connect the USB cable and just leave ActiveSync to power everything up, then I have a 95% success connection rate.
On very odd occasions, I've had to disconnect the Exec, turn it off, then plug the USB in again. And once I restarted the workstation first - probably didn't have to, but was going for a coffee anyway.
AGHHH
I had a failure with Active Sync and established that it still worked with my 2 C500's so I phoned orange.
Eventually made my way to level 3 (highest) tech support to be told that its microsofts problem and that they have withdrawn Active Sync 4 until they can fix it.
I can connect to my M5000, move files via explore but as for the necessity of syncing itand my contacts..............forget it

Interaction with Outlook
My sync problems went away when I configured Zonealarm to allow it to connect.
I also had to install Outlook, which I don't like as I use Thunderbird for Email. Sync would still not work untill I allowed Outlook to be the default email client. However, I have not defined any accounts on Outlook and Thunderbird does not seem to mind.

I got a whole series of increasingly depressed emails from my TBird install after I stuck Outlook on my lappie... In the end I had to take it out for the evening, give it some new extensions and what-not before it started talking to me again...
Is there a credible alternative to Activesnc 4.1 anywhere ? I am absolutely sick and tired of this cr*p.
I want to be able to sync calendar, tasks, notes and files - reliably. That's all. That's not too much to ask is it?
Any ideas ?
TIA, DBo.
I'd be interested in one, been looking for a day or two but pretty new to the PPC thing and not making much progress.
Atm the only surefire way to ActiveSync seems to be, soft reset before sync, again after. It's quite a 1 shot deal, once it's synced, it won't again without a soft reset of the PDA. Note: Never needed to restart the PC used, I have tried this, no difference.
Have you read this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=41955&highlight=activesync+solution
Solved that problem for me.
reading the other post now ... my activesync kills itself too i need to reboot my pc to make it work again ... apart from that it wont even synch all my contact ... it misses out random ones all the time
Can't tweak my TCP settings
I'd love to do this, but I can't go messing about with the TCP settings on my company laptop. Not if I want to keep my job.
I need a decent alternative to AS 4.1 even if that means AS 4.2
Silentz:
Yeah, tried that (amongst several hundred other things). I already use DrTCP for optimising my lans due to me using gigE with jumbo packets, so am pretty familiar with it on that ground. I also tried many other reg tweaks (on the PC not PPC) regarding networking etc. to no avail.
From all the tests and tweaks I've done I'm no further into solving this issue, which doesn't half stick in my side. PC m$ os with m$ software talking to a PPC with m$ os with m$ software, who the hell is writing this utter drivvle software?
I have concluded however that the PC / ActiveSync 4.1 side of things does not fail or lockup, regardless of reboots or no reboots or net settings used. It is the PPC's running ActiveSync which borks, stalls then grinds to a halt. I suppose it's possible m$ will fix the PC 4.1 software to not bust the PPC but I've also pretty much resided myself to needing a ROM update to fix the PPC half
This of all things annoys me, I've fixed almost everything else wrong with this phone but turning it off on a regular basis just takes the biscuit, like who does that nowadays?
Yeah that's right - it's the PPC which goes funky, but in my case it was down to the PC (i think) cramming data at it.
If you switch off (untick) all elements of the today screen it also works better, although that's not really a solution!
Microsoft do need to release ActiveSync 4.2 asap.
Yeah, tried all that, I only have MSN on today page anyways but have tried it with nothing. I only sync contacts anyway and even then only about 100 - still hangs if not the first time...
What about this?
Device Manager
Hi,
I was successful in resolving a "stubborn" active Sync, by doing the following:
Remove USB Cable to K-jam.
Open device manager.
Go to Network adapters.
Disabling adapter called: "Windows Mobile Based Device".
Re-enabling adapter called: "Windows Mobile Based Device".
Plugging USB cable back in.
Kind regards
Adrian

But for how long?
I find that AS is very unstable.
I have installed the latest ROM and still get problems with both my devices.
If I play an MP3 in Windows Media Player, AS drops the connection and I have to unplug my MDA Vario (or my XDA Mini S) and reconnect it again.
If I soft reset for any reason while still connected to AS, it drops the connection and on re-connect it hangs at 'Looking for changes' and I have to re boot the PC to get a connection again.
Other times without warning it will drop the connection and not re-connect without a re-boot of the PC
etc. etc etc.
Fortunately all my contacts, calendar and tasks are held on my PC in Thunderbird (I don't use Outlook) and I have a seperate sync programme for syncing them so I don't need to rely on AS for data sync.
But I do wish there was an alternative for enabling the connection to the PC.
When I have my cingular 8125 connected to my desktop and activesync is running, I can't connect to anything on the internet with my PDA.
I'm accustomed to being able to do that and my previous PDA devices used activesync and the PC's internet connection to do that. Can the 8125 not do that?
Yes, the 8125 and other variants of the Wizard can use ActiveSync's "passthrough" function using port 5721, so it's definitely not exhibiting normal behavior.
ActiveSync is syncing ok? Do you get the two back and forth arrows icon on top (indicating a passthrough connection)? What happens when you try to browse?
I confess I haven't seen this before but I would start by opening a command prompt on your pc. Type the command
telnet 169.254.2.2 5721.
If it returns "Connect failed" you have some software blocking the connection -- possibly firewall since it's the often the culprit in AS connectivity issues, but possibly other sync software, or vpn.
You might try disabling your startup items using msconfig then see if it works -- go to start > run > msconfig.
On the General tab, click Selective Startup, then uncheck the Load Startup Items box. Then click the Services tab, check the box that says Hide All Microsoft services, then disable the remainding services. Reboot.
You'll need to run AS manually once it's booted then see if it will let you use the passthrough connection.
Well, it syncs just fine. It just doesn't get the passthough connection.
The telnet works just fine also.
Interesting. What does it do when you try to browse using the passthrough? Does it try to open a gprs connection instead? Does it give an error message?
It errors out with a message: "The page cannot be displayed because the connection was lost. Please try again."
Some more information.
When connected via activesync, I can check email. It's only the pocket IE that can't get to anywhere.
Any ideas?
i'm hating activesync 4.1, it disconnects halfway through a file transfer then renders my device unuseable til i soft reset and makes my pc not shut down without unplugging it :x
Ive done all the firewall settings etc but it still doesnt work properly, i can only stay connected to my pc for about 3 mins.
Guess im gonna have to buy a card reader

Out of curiousity, are you syncing with bluetooth or USB?
with usb, i also have wifi in the house but it wont log on to that either  it finds it ok (and next doors hehe  ) but thats as far as it'll go. it wont accept the network password (im using the pkey method)
ive done all the stuff suggested by m$oft but nothing seems to help. it could be an issue with my home network stealing the bandwidth apparently-does this sound right? i never had a problem with my ppc2003 ipaq on active sync 3.8 but now that wont work either without cutting off after 3 mins.
why does m$oft crap never work
When the Wizard is connected and the Activesync box shows on your Computer, when u go to File > Connection settings.
Is the tab "This computer is connected to:"
set to "the internet"
Cuz that was the problem with mine. I set it to internet, and voila!, hello world wide web.
i only want to transfer music+videos+photos etc, not bothered about syncing the other stuff like contacts or using it to go online as im on an unlimited data tariff anyway
I'm having somewhat similar issues to the OP. Activesync Sync's fine, I can transfer files to/from the phone...however Passthrough doesn't work. I've disabled my firewall, and checked and rechecked all the settings on the PC and the Phone with no luck. If anyone has anything to suggest please let me know.

I hope it's ok to ask this question in your thread. It regards activesync and outlook. My problem is that I can not add a calendar event with any text added to the note field on my cell phone (Cingular 8125) and have it sync to Outlook on the PC. I always get an "attention required" message followed by a error code: support code 1.
If I only have a calendar topic and location without any notes, it syncs up fine. Or I can add an event on the PC and have lots of notes and it syncs to the phone just fine...but not vice versa.
Just wondering if any of you have a similar issue - I have Activesync 4.2 and Outlook 2002
Incidentally, I can surf thru my phone when connected usb to my Dell Inspiron notebook.
thanks
Pleased with my Orange M3100 so far, about 3 weeks of use...
Just have one problem, activesync randomly starts up and I'm bothered that I may accidently start a phone call if it fires up whilst in the case and I don't know about it...
I have the WiFi turned off unless I need it and also have data disabled using
the util off MODACO... so it shouldn't be seeing any thing to sync to, the only thing active is the Bluetooth which I leave on all the time for headset or GPS use with TOMTOM...
Any thoughts please....
Phil
You need to use the 'Fake Server Trick'. I can't find links to it on this forum, but if you spend a bit of time searching you'll find it on the board somewhere. I saw it mentioned recently.
It was a must-do on my old Dell Axim x51v because it would stop the PDA starting and lose the compactflash card amongst other problems, requiring a soft reset to start the PDA. Not so much a necessity on the Vario II thankfully. If you can't find it here I posted a thread on Aximsite a while ago giving the procedure step by step:

Is this gonna stop the WSOD and the "not coming back from standby mode"? Cause I've got these problems in daily basis and I have to reset all the time
I have a question about the fake server trick. Will it stop direct push? Also, will it stop updates to my calendar and contacts from syncing?

I can't really answer your question with absolute certainty because I don't use the Direct Push service on my Vario II.
However, I would guess if you already have an Exchange server mapped for Direct Push, then you need to have Activesync running for it to work properly and sync with the Exchange server regularly, so the F.S.T. is probably not for you.
That said - if you are getting problems which *may* have something to do with Activesync launching itself while on standby and causing WSOD etc, you could apply the F.S.T. then just load Activesync manually, start a manual sync, then close Activesync down afterwards. This would completely defeat the object of Direct Push though!

Give it a whirl... it can't do any harm.
I didn't realise the Hermes/TyTN/VarioII sufferred from these problems... maybe because I did the F.S.T. on my VarioII the moment I received it.
I did the fake server trick, seemed to work, but after a while ActiveSync is back in my runinng programs list. Is that normal or should the program be gone?
Every time you dock and sync with your PC, Activesync will load on your TyTN no matter what. When you undock you'll need to manually close Activesync otherwise it will stay running in the background.
I'm assuming you docked at some point?

No, I didn't. I did the server trick 4 times now, but every few hours when I look at my open programs ActiveSync is there again. I don't know if ActiveSync still tries to sync automatically or does nothing, but is is there...
Killsync - Stop ActiveSync!
So you have ActiveSync and you want to stop it from running. Well with Killsync, it stops ActiveSync so you can release the ram and increase the speed of your PC. This application does the same thing as the user switching to the task manager and killing the wcescomm task. When you need ActiveSync you can click on the ActiveSync icon. You can try putting Killsync in your startup to close ActiveSync if it starts first.

Just got around to trying the fake server trick yesterday, it appears to have worked on my M3100.. May it continue...
Thanks for help
Phil
Hi all yes I tried the Fake server trick 2 weeks ago before going To Germany on Business. I have not had the problem in the two weeks away. seems to have worked though I was not syncing quite as much or to same office PC. I will see home it goes now I am back in the office.
Thanks
Nigel
every minute or two (random) my tytn wakes up by himself..
i think that ive narrow it down to "active sync" and/or "internet connection" (gprs data over sim) that i have.
i have an exchange account in my tytn AS ,i have tried to put it on "when items arrives" and "manual" and it still doesnt works the software that i have installed are:
SPB POCKET PLUSE
SPB PHONE SUITE
i dont know what to do...
I have the same issue...started happening when I installed Black 3.0 not sure if its related though.
Thats nothing. Quite regulary my phone makes random calls. The last one was a few nights ago at 3am. My phone called my wife while we were asleep.
I think your house is haunted...[GHOST NOISES]wooooooo ooooooooo! [/GHOST NOISES]

I have a similar problem with my phone and I think there are multiple causes.
I noticed that my phone would go on by itself until it timed out and then shut off again. I had set my backlight to turn off after 2 minutes when not in use and I had also set the screen to turn off after 2 minutes when not in use. Somehow these two settings conflicted causing the phone to cycle on/off every two minutes. I corrected it by disabling the backlight shutoff and just leaving the screen shutoff timer active.
I have my phone setup to connect to my exchange server at work. When I plug into my computer at home it tries to synch with my exchange server at work and the connection will NOT go through. I assume this is because the exchange server access is looking for a portable device not the home computer and will not allow the connect, but if I synch while not connected it works fine. The problem is that everytime I plug into the PC it will fail at the exchange portion of the synch leaving an error message on the screen and the screen will NOT power off automatically as long as that message is there. Additionally, the phone will try and synch automatically every x hours as it was setup regardless of whether it is connected to the computer or standalone which will trigger the situation above again.
I have also found that if the phone sits with that error on the screen for a while, when I disconnect from the PC and try to do something with the phone it will sometimes lock up and I have to reset it to get it working again. It remains unresponsive to any screen taps or button presses.
I believe that whenever the phone is plugged into the computer setup with ActiveSync it will use that computers internet connection rather than it's own connection which is what leads to my exchange synch problem.
Well i remember this happening on my wizard and i narrowed it to weatherpanel connecting to check for updates and also if you have a password for when you turn on your phone from sleeping that also kept making the phone come out of stand by.
