TomTom 5.1 poor refresh in Horizontal mode? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hi, I have got TomTom Navigator 5.1 working almost perfectly, but does anybody else find that when the screen is rotated horizontally, the screen update rate becomes very slow, and the new frames take a long time to draw. In vertical mode it's perfectly animated!

ive noticed it, its like a 50% transparent wipe closly followed by the 100% opaque menu page.
pain, but a TTN update for wm5 enhancements would be appreciated, IF THEY ARE READING THIS!!!! :!:

Yes, that's exactly how I see it too. Vertical works beautifully though. I have already requested this update to TT and suggest anyone here does the same.

It does this because it doesn't use WM5's built in rotation. It calculates the pixel rotation on the fly.
This is because of TomTom's quest for hardware independance.
Never going to be fixed I'm afraid.

Are you saying it does this on all Pocket PCs?
You seem very definate that TT won't fix it. Do you work for them? Never say never!

Because it's been this way since they started supporting rotation. It's especially slow on VGA devices such as the JASJAR and X50V.
Why would TomTom put the investment in to support a function only a tiny proportion of their target markets wants or even sees as a problem? They are more interested in the Go set of products now anyway.
If you have a look at the pocketgps forums you will see that therre are a lot more serious bugs in TomTom 5.1 that they are unwilling to fix.

Hmm, maybe I'm a little bit spoiled because my former phone (Magician) animated TomTom 5.21 absolutely smooth (>15fps or so).
On my Universal, the refresh rate in either horizontal or vertical mode is quite unacceptable because it seems that the screen is only being refreshed once per second (or worse), even with disabled POI's.
Okay, the map looks really great on the Universal's VGA-screen but I would rather prefer a somewhat smooth navigation :?
Am I doing something wrong here?
.ox

Have you tried diabling the display of POIs? I find that screen refresh is fine unless I'm trying to show the POIs - you can still be warned when approaching (e.g. speed cams) as it will flash up and show you. Not perfect but a good compromise?

Well nothing wrong, but your Universal has 4 times the number of pixels. It will be slower of course.

I don't think, TT can display the frame rate ... the values in my previous post are just guessed.
You say, it works great on your Universal - can you guess how often the screen is refreshed when you are driving? I mean, does it look like it's refreshed once a second or is it "absolutely" smooth?

hi, it works, in my opinion, smooth..i cannot see any refreshes or lags.
cheers, cudo

TomTom 5.21 on my Uni is perfect in landscape mode, refreshing 3-4 times a second at a rough estimate.
Refreshes about the same in either screen orientation.

converting apps to VGA using res2exe

Ok, I have an obsession to get a VGA resolution web browser right now on my MDA PRO. The only thing I came up is using an MS developer tool called res2exe and using with existing Internet explorer or Opera. I have seen a post where the user has I guess recompiled the opera broweser with res2exe, however to do this you need Visual studio.net and the Windows mobile SDK.
would anyone be able to give me a hand on how to do this in plain english? Alternatively would anyone be able to post the recompiled exe ?
I dont think I can rest until I get a VGA browser !
Cmon guys this must be on the top of everyones list?
p.s the best thing MDA owners can do is flash with the IMATE ROM, the T Mobile ROM is the biggest pile of cack and the UI customisation is awful.

I hope so... I'm dying to get one working myself. They just recently released a new version of Minimo and it has full VGA support, but it's painfully slow on my Jasjar... looks beautiful, though.
I spent some time trying to get Pocket IE to run in VGA mode, but the problem is that it technically *does* run in VGA mode... the fonts and larger graphics are displayed in VGA. For some completely stupid reason though, it quadruples the size of smaller graphics... this prevents web sites from displaying properly and keeps us from getting as much as we want on the screen at once.
The Opera for smartphones that some people have gotten working doesn't interest me at all because it doesn't support the touchscreen. I'd rather browse in non-vga mode than loose the touchscreen.
Right now, most of the time I just deal with Pocket IE as is. If I need to do a lot of browsing I'll use the registry hack to enable VGA mode on my Jasjar and use Pocket IE that way... which does support VGA mode the way it should. Unfortunately it requires a soft reset to get into VGA mode and a soft reset to get out of it, plus there are problems with a lot of other programs when the device is in VGA mode, so it's not a pretty solution.

Couldn't agree more - I was stunned when browsing didn't feel any better than my XDA, and it took a bit of time to understand what was going on. I really don't understand why Opera is not doing an WM5 version. I've got my money ready to pay the SECOND someone comes up with a VGA browser for us.
which vga hack?
Brett, I agree with your comments. Can someone point me in the right direction of the jasjar VGA hack ? these seems to be a number of them.
I am sure this has been covered, but the annoying size of the friggin soft buttons bar/menu bar at the bottom of the screen is such a waste of our new found screen real estate. the bar could be smaller. or at least should be able to hide. ......this is not a fair comprmise between screen estate and menu navigation.

Any of the ones for WM2003 (SEVGA, OZVGA, or simply editing the registry) work to get the Jasjar into VGA mode. The problem is that as of right now, no one has figured how to get WM5 to display icons correctly in VGA mode. You lose all of the symbols at the top of the screen that show signal strength and connection status and such, and the icons displayed on the today screen and in Programs don't actually apply to the programs that they're associated with. Some programs (such as contacts and calculator) simply refuse to run in VGA mode, so it's not something that works as a full time solution. However, Pocket IE does run in VGA mode, and when it's in VGA mode it doesn't do any of the horrible image stretching that it does in 'normal' mode. That's why I go back and forth ocassionally. There's another thread here that was started by Rilot that talks about this a bit more.

Problem with iGo and screen orientation?

Hi,
I have been using iGo 2006 Plus for a couple of weeks now and keep noticing a weird problem. Every now and again, at some point the screen orientation will go haywire, and the touchscreen will revert to the default (upside down landscape on athena) but the screen will stay the same. I.e. to click the bottom right of the screen I have to tap the top left part of the screen. Anyone else have this issue? It's very weird! At first I thought the device was freezing as I was pressing buttons and nothing was happening, but then I realised the touchscreen and the display had fallen out with each other!

Yep - I've had exactly the same problem - it usually happens when you 'minimise' i-Go to use your PPC and then try to 'maximise' again. The only way around it that I've found is to close i-Go to use PPC and then re-start it again.
Thanks for the reply, I'm gutted it isn't just me - was hoping I'd found a perfect TomTom 6 replacement! Oh well, it's still better than TT6. If anyone knows of a fix, please let us know!
Best replacement I've found is the new and improved 2007 re-packaged iGo software known as MioMap v3.2. Very similar GUI but much improved functionality wise over iGo and it has Speed camera software to boot as well as giving directions (voice guidance) with Miles as opposed to only giving Voice guidance in Kilometers option.
It's got everything iGo has and is built on its platform...it just works better and is far more stable IMHO. Still evaluating it and have no issues as yet. I too had experienced the fore mentioned issue of screen rotation in iGo My Way.
I'm glad I made the switch.
I agree miomap 3.2 seems more stable.
I havnt found a minimize option on it yet,but i only just installed and messed with a few options.

Wait till you take her out for a spin! This app really rocks!! Just wish the GUI was as crisp as on iGo, which truly looked VGA all the way, whereas MioMaps options menu looks more like stretched QVGA
But don't worry peeps, the maps and cockpit look every bit as good as iGo's.
I changed the skin for mio map and found the minimize button, and the UI has improved dramtically.
I used the quicksilver skin from a IGO/MIO fanpage.

sorry i didnt get back to you regarding the skin site(I was at work).
Ive just used mio to navigate home from work and it seems there are still some probs.
1: If I recieve a notification whilst using mio the notification appears in portrait and when i exit mio the screen stays in portrait.(I get the same prob when using igo with wisbar advance active)
2: The gps position on screen cannot keep up even at 30mph.
3: It occasionally doesnt show me the correct position on the map.
4: It occasionally loses gps for a few seconds.
Mackaby! Did you check out the few tweaks they have for the sys.txt on that blogger.xs4all site?
Fair observations of MioMaps shortcomings, but....

Hi again. Yes I've experienced all of the same things you described, but am not majorly put off by it.
To be honest I don't want to read any txt whilst driving, but you make some fair points. As for the occasional loss of signal, I had these issues with TomTom 5 & 6, but not often, but when it happened with TomTom, it really screwed me up. With iGo & MioMap signal re-acquisition is far quicker and hasn't caused me any major gripes as yet, but it is early days.
Yeah I did a few alterations to the sys.txt as instructed, but only to reveal 1 way streets. I didn't want to make too many changes all at once without seeing the initial ones.
Great site though. Thanks.
To be honest, I'm looking forward to the new version of iGo in all its glorious 3D rendering of streets and buildings.
P.S. 2: The gps position on screen cannot keep up even at 30mph. I haven't experienced this yet.

Application idea - Fake Accelerometer

IPhone has an accelerometer.
Turns out so does the N95.
But what do our windows phones have...well they have a camera. And it has been proven by games like lawndarts that the camera cab be used to mimic the accelerometer.
So my idea (which I have neither the skill or the time to bring to fruition lol) is to mimic iphone functions like landscape mode on phone rotate.
So who thinks it is possible?
Cool idea!
But then the camera must be turned on the whole time
and that will drain the battery.

Doh, never thought of that lol, bum
IMHO the accelerometer is overkill...How hard is it to push a button? I'd rather have my phone respond to my intention and not just gravity. I can think of alot of reasons one would rotate the phone and not want the screen to arbitrarily rotate. I wonder hoiw many Iphone users are frustrated with this lack of control.
i think it's pretty cool how it smoothly rotates upon how you hold it.
windows rotate sucks boogers. it lags
It Exist and Guess Who Now Has It...

The story is incorrect. It appears that an accelerometer is present in the Nokia phone. Sorry.
Nokia is cracking down hard on WM. They are implementing this as we speak.
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/...iphone-like-screen-rotation-via-rotateme-app/
They implemented it via the camera sensor from the article. Maybe Nokia has better battery life than WM
I was meaning this from the n95

That screen rotate is what I was thinking though lol

Yup, it has a hardware accelerometer. It's functioning just GREAT and is VERY sensitive - much more sensitive than anything camera-based.
Its only problem is the inability to scroll vertically when the PDA isn't parallel with the earth (including being upside down). Horizontal scrolling is OK in all cases. This is, however, only little grief as you can always move the PDA in these states in order to control the cursor also vertically.
I wonder if VueFlu could be similarly used, or, is it much less sensitive / one-dimension only?

Whats the compatibilty like with WM apps?

Might seem a silly question, (Forgive me if it is!!) but how do older WM apps work with the non-standard screen size of the X1? Will I find standard QVGA and VGA applications that will just fail to work?
If they do work... does it scale the displays in most cases to full screen, or leave "bars" top and bottom of screens?
This will help my decision on X1 or Touch Pro!

i really want to know this too.
This is really difficult to answer. Every app that i ran on my touch pro works on my xperia with the exception of emulators but there is a fix for that. I haven't run into any problems software wise.
Some will and some won't... I know it's not a definitive answer, but finding any software that works first time is pot luck to be honset.
There are so many different versions of each piece of software that it's sometimes difficult to track down a version that works.
Most apps that don't run full screen work fine, like file explorers etc. Full screen apps don't always fare so well. Games and emulators usually work ok if they're made for a VGA screen, the ones that are updated frequently should be ok as the developers have already added functionality for higher resolution screens.
I've got the ScummVM emulator to work, and in landscape it leaves a chunk at the right hand side of the screen that still shows WM icons/whatever application you have running in the background.
There's a fix to blank out the bottom part so that it's black all the time, but even this leaves me with a couple of lines visible at the right hand side of the screen.

Really no more lag ?
Anybody knows, where can we can find this version ?
Thanks for this news man.
I just checked TomTom Home => but there are no updates for me.
I have Version7.910(9185) installed.
btw: I hope you know what GPS Lag means.
You make 90 degree Curve and on the Display it shows up in 2-3 sec.
Is it possible to have a cruise-ripped version of this build? Or is it warez related? :?
I'm using 7.910(9185) with almost zero lag. My true position is reflected by the tip of the arrow, not the centre but map response on tight corners is perfectly adequate for navigation and almost as good as the Navteq system fitted to my car.
what number/versions of maps do work with tomtom7.915.916?
Could you please share? If it's still a free soft.
Thats the Problem - your GPS position in TomTum shuld NOT be the top of the Arrow.
And be honest, how accurate is it in a curve or a Roundabout.
I use my Diamond while driving with an external bluetooth mouse and it is 5m accurate an zero lag.
The Problem is imho not the Software but the way qualcomm is pre-processing the NMEA Data.
Same experience for me
No more lags, fast fix. Before; I sometimes had to wait 20 min for a fix. Now 1-2 min. Must say I updated rom (_NLD_2.03.) and TomTom together.
here is a RS link for the new tomtom
MOD EDIT: No warez
Jut cant figure out how to install to internal memory. Link Include QVGA and VGA
for sure i know what a lag is, i use a smartphone since tomtom 5 on my first qtek...and diamnod is my 11th smartphone so if i say i have a lag i assume to know what i say
i also never post a link because of respect of rules in xda-dev ! google is the friends of all of us for testing purpose only
but i thought it was a good information to share because i really have no lags with this version and my diamond, where i am with my car is correct with the tomtom from NOW
maybe it could be the same for you, for me it's ok i can say
I'm using version 7.450.9028.
How can I upgrade to the lastest version?
Thanks
Installed on HD, the lag is minor than other versions, but still exists
Works great

Surely there must always be a lag of some size or other, otherwise Tomtom will have to predict where you are going? And I presume the lag time must increase with speed, as the processing time must be standard no matter how fast you are going?
Anyway I've been using version 7.450.9028 with 720.1802 maps for some time, and, on a straight road my car is more or less at the point of the arrow at 70mph, so I will try this new version and see how much better it is
yes sure you are right, but i can say than with some pna of my friends tested yesterday (one tomtom 920, one garmin) the diamond and this tomtom is the same, it's a normal software for gps now and no frustrations anymore.
What this version seems to never do :
the coffee
predict where you will be one minutes after in the future
br
Correct size of POI:s Icons
Hi!
First of all, TomTom for Diamond has been concidered NOT to be warez in the past. Why the change?
Second, in the 7.915.916 at last tha POI iocns does show up in the "normal" size as in the QVGA versions. Big thanks TomTom!
Third, I also wanted an installation on the interna storage. But since there was'nt any way to change during the installation, I simply moved all the files and maps, besides CurrenMap and UserPatch in Program/Navigator to the internal memory and created a Program/Navigator folder. Works nice, just the icon under programs now is wrongly linked and needs to be changed.
