GREAT BUG WITH ACTIVESYNC - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hi all,
here we go with my very first big big bug!
I can't sync anymore...I have tried both Activesync 4.0 and 4.1, but when it start to sync my PC goes to self rebot...
Any suggestion?
PS on my desktop is running Objectdock to customize my pc desktop...I thought it could be the reason why I couldn't sync, but even if a disable it, I always got the same problem.

Wow, er... I assume you've gone through the (very) convoluted process of COMPLETELY uninstalling ActiveSync?
I tried ActiveSync 4 a couple of months ago and it completely screwed up my sync-ing for over a week until I finally found an answer on Google (somewhere). Turns out there are all sorts of fairly important files that don't actually get removed when you uninstall ActiveSync 4.
Having said that, I eventually re-installed the same version of ActiveSync and it's been working perfectly (so far). It does sound like a problem with your installed version of ActiveSync though.
Try looking through this forum thread for help on removing AS4... http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=206702

Activesync Nightmare

Hi,
I've read about the nightmares that people have suffered with Activesync on various forums over the last few years but I have to say that having spent nearly 8 hours today trying to get my XDA II to connect to my PC and seeing absolutely no progress I am feeling somewhat of a martyr.
I can't connect at all to my PC. I have installed and un-installed 3.7.1 several times, I have tried 3 different computers. I have tried to use Activesync with my iPAQ 540 and it works fine. But not so with my XDA II.
I don't have the new ROM upgrade on and I guess unless I can get a connection I won't be able to upgrade the operating system.
I've tried old versions of Activesync 3.5 for instance and that didn't work either.
I have cold booted, warm booted, cleaned out the storage area, wiped the XDA as much as possible, restored from backup and nothing.
One clue which makes me think that the problem is definitely at the XDA II end, I have a Tom Tom GPS in my car. When I connect to the XDA a message normally pops up to say that Activesync is connecting on the serial port. Since Activesync has stopped working this message doesn't pop up but the GPS is still working.
Are there any heroes out there who may have a clue on this. I suspect that something has either been corrupted in the ROM or I have somehow inadvertantly deleted some essential files without knowing it.
I have a 512Mb SD card I can use if there is a way tu upgrade the ROM with SD and I have the backpack and a Compact Flash card I could use.
Any suggestions? Please!!!
Johnzh
Confirming that you bought this device new and have never been able to connect to your PC? If so I suspect its a hardware issues and a return is in oder!
thanks for the thought, but no I have had it for several months and it has workewd fine until today. Everything is working fine except the ability to run activesync
Try restoring
I had the same problem like you few days ago. It was due to some s/w which was installed and later removed.
Try this; Restore your pc to a date before this, hard reset your unit. From there, it should be able to connect and sync. If not, re-install active sync again.
Hope this helps.
I'm having similar problems with mine - it's my second as I returned the first becasue of battery probs - both were a nightmare to get working - one thing that helped was to re-install Outlook as supplied on the XDA CD - it's the same version as I had but it worked once I'd done this.
Now I've lost the ability to sync via IR - I'll try the cradle this evening and hope for the best - bummer - couldn't get Bluetooth to work for synching either - how many hours am I going to waste on this one....?
The original XDA was a breeze compared to this....

Blue Screen when connecting wizard to USB/Active Sync 4

The dreaded blue screen is back for me... for no apparent reason, from one day to the next. I now cannot sync anymore at all. as soon as AS starts to sync data, i get a blue screen, with a stop 1d in tcpip.sys.
I checked through other posts regarding the topic, but couldn't find any solution for me: already on as 4.1, all drivers up to date, all patches in the system etc. no matter what I do, as soon as it starts syncing, bam!
any other ideas on what to do? haven't been able to sync for 2 days now, and it's becoming a problem now...
thanks, tom.
Bluescreen on USB but not on Bluetooth
I have the same problem, but the bluescreen appears only on USB syncing, when I sync over Bluetooth it works perfect.
never managed to get bt syncing working, any hints on that? might be an interim solution at least, but i'd also like to get usb syncing working as well.
i got a exchange server up so i can sync with the activesync over wlan/gsm thats gonna work great i hope, my qtek arrives tommorow
finally figured out what was causing the bluescreens for me: kaspersky antivirus. I found some dubious files on my system so I installed it, and even though it was not running, it still caused AS4 to bluescreen. Now after completely uninstalling kaspersky, i can finally sync again.. yay!
it seems that *anything* that does something to the TCP/IP stack is a likely cause of any problems with ActiveSync 4. This is pretty damn poor from Microsoft
I still have problems with Sygate Security Agent - removing it solved the problem.
You don't have to uninstall Kaspersky, you can just disable the network security settings of KAV. With an other firewall enabled you don't need them anyway..
I used to get the same bluescreens when syncing with USB only - but the official 4.1 release from MS seems to have cured it... (fingers crossed).

Alternative to ActiveSync?

I am sick and tired of having to hard reset my wizard to get active sync working again!
I have had this problem so many times, activesync will work fine for a period of time and then at some point it will stop working and all i will see on my pc is 'connecting'.
I have asked before if you can just re-install active sync on the device but i didnt get an answer
What i am asking is, is there another piece of software that i can use to sync my device with outlook?
I don't think you can just reinstall activeasync. Have you been using any notification clearing software?

no. the only thing i have on my phone is pocket zen phone (not set up to clear notifications), and TCPMP.
One thing i did notice was strange that last night when i was trying to connect to my home WLAN i could only connect if i removed the storage card! Weird but probably unrelated......
You'd better remove all partnership on your 9100 and then connect again instead of making HR each time.
Had problem initially and found it was firewall.
Have you checked your firewall to see if it is blocking it from time to time?
Not trying to teach you to suck eggs so to speak but you may need to put the device into the trusted zone?
I have disabled the firewall, in fact I always disable the firewall and the av prior to sync.
I have also removed partnerships to no effect, thanks for your help anyway guys.
looks like another hr....
Having exactly the same problems here ... 4.* series seems really buggy, have no wlan or bluetooth .... but sadly its the only thing working for wm5 devices .... microsoft should be ashamed for such a sad update to activesynch.

Active Sync Problem after I-Mate Upgrade

I can't perform a sync. My computer recognizes the new device, but active sync just hangs showing a window stating: "retrieving settings..."
Any ideas as to how to fix active sync?
I already tried uninstalling active sync and performing a hard reset on my Exec, but it still end up with active sync hanging.
I have the same Problem and no Idea what to do...
OK, I was able to sync using BT. Now when I connect my Exec using USB, my Exec still won't sync via USB. I already checked the settings if I had the check mark on syncing via USB and I do. I can access my SD Card via USB, but it still won't allow me to sync via USB. Any ideas?
I know I am missing a setting somewhere. Hmmmmm.
OK, another update guys, it seems that active sync allows me to install programs without syncing, so to me this is no hindrance, as long as I can access my SD Card and install applications via USB, it's good enough for me. I guess if I want to sync I just have to use BT. But any solutions on your part is also appreciated.
Hi,
somteimes that's an issue related to firewall or antivirus.
If you're using Sygate or Kaspersky that could happen.
If you use Sygate there's a file in Buzzdev.net to solve the issue.
Hope to be helpful

I don't use Sygate. I do have System Suite with NetDefense Firewall. I'll try and disable my firewall to check if that is what causing me to unable to sync via USB. But how come it allows me to access my SD Card and insatall applications if my firewall is blocking active sync. Shouldn't it be blocking all functions of active sync? I'll post my update once I disable my firewall. Thanks durius.
Hi, it's not the firewall.
BUMP,
I still have this problem.
I had the same problem
1. no Activesync exept the first time
2 no Mailsynch via wireless
3 MSN messenger wouldn't log in
I did a hard reset with the same rom and voila
everything works now.
I jus deleted the wireless remove cab from the xtended rom before the hard reset as i wanted the Wireless Today item back
I also had problems with new Rom , installed ActiveSync 4.1 ,big mistake. Rolled back to 4.0 and now all perfect.

Hi,
I had same problem too after installing i-mate ROM - Activesync just kept saying 'Connecting...'. I went into Device Manager, disabled the Windows Mobile card within network cards, checked for updated drivers (it didn't find any so assume this step is irrelevant) then re-enabled the network card and it all worked like a dream.
Hope this helps.
Steve
I had this same issue, drove me crazy. I managed to fix it, but I'm about to be really unhelpful as I din't fix it in a particularly scientific manner.
I was so annoyed that I did the following 3 things, in this order
1 - Went to Device Manager and unistalled Windows Mobile device #X
2 - Uninstalled Activesync build 4.1.41xx, went into \windows\system32 and deleted rapi.dll, then reinstalled version 4.1.40xx something or other
3 - Turned off my firewall
I then managed to sync the phone again, turned the firewall back on. It now syncs fine, but I do still get the msg on the PPC saying "unable to get an IP address"
I sync with two PCs, my home machine and a work laptop. I don't know if maybe I was running two different versions of activesync, but I was able to sync with the laptop even while this was going on.
From what stevegiraffes says, it appears that it was actually step 1 above that fixed the issue. The strange thing was that my PPC device name had been M5000, but after managing to get the damn thing to sync at home it became WM_Ownername again; minor point.
Very odd, but major panic now over
Happy Pi day everyone!

I stand corrected. It was Windows Firewall that caused the problem. I tried disabling both my firewalls again and it worked. Thanks!
Thanks to everyone that responded. I tried all your suggestions, but in the end it was the FIREWALL after all. I am glad this was over.

ActiveSync cannot be completed successfully...

Sorry in advance for another AS issue. However, search as I may, I couldn't loacte anything like this...
Anyhow, my T-mobile MDA (US) has about driven me nuts with this issue. I was able to sync successfully a few times. However, now when I plug in the MDA via USB (direct, not through any hub), it will connect but when the device starts to sync, I get the following error from ActiveSync:
"Synchronization cannot be completed successfully. Reconnect your device and try again. If the problem persists, see the Microsoft ActiveSync troubleshooter in Microsoft ActiveSync help on your desktop computer".
I've uninstalled activesync, deleted all registry entries, reinstalled, ensured proper firewall configuration, changed com ports, disabled my internal WLAN card and BT card...and nothing. Short of a hard-reset, I am at a total loss.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? Any work-arounds?
try to install everything again and don't plug it on the usb hub...coz power is not sufficient on a usb hub .. just try.
I'm getting the same error exactly on my Cingular 8125. plugged into pc directly via USB, tried reinstalling AS several times to no avail. Please help. I don't want to have to hard reset. :? Thanks
As I mentioned in my OP, there is no USB hub involved in my setup. This is a direct USB connection from my PC to the MDA.
ooppppssss
hehehe.. Are you syncing via the cradle or a hotsync cable ?. Sometimes if the cable is also charging, the connection is not sucessfull until it's fully charge and the top light is green.
I've had this problem myself before now.
Rockshow...are you also running SPB Weather?
No, i'm using spb pocket plus 3.1 though, but its the first thing I installed and i'm just now having problems after 3 weeks without any problems
Firewall
Hi,
Do you use a firewall (Windows XP or other one)
If so, check this out.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/default.mspx
It worked for me!
grtz,
Pfeffa-rah
I'm also facing the same problem with my tmobile-mda(us). I had spbplus but after this problem, uninstalled it. but the problem still exists.. any help ?
i noticed 2 things with my sync problems which are now resolved. one problem was with softick card export, it was causing some errors which were gone when i uninstalleed it. but then had another problem, it would disconnect while syncing randomly. i found out that my cable was damaged(some dirt was in the connector which thankfully ruined the cable and not the phone part) also when u first connect ur device it shows that network connection in the taskbar with the bouncing yellow ball. if u right click it and click on repair that helps some time.

What's the significance of PSB Weather? I've had sync problems, some days it works some days it doesn't. I can cope with that, but sometimes SPB weather doesn't update it self for days, which is a bit of a pain!
Incidentally I recently hard-reset my device, reinstalled SPB Weather and can nolonger select the option of syncing from weather.com, which limits my choic of available cities. Any ideas?

Try killing and restarting activesync on the phone. I've only had that problem once and that sorted it.
I had the same problem.
Found out it was my virus protection (TrendMicro PC-Cillin) When I disable my virus protection it syncs, otherwise it only connects and then gives the error you described.
I had the exact same problem untill a few minutes ago when I did a hard reset. I back up my all my data using Sprite but when I restored it gave me the same error message. I gave up and did another hard resetjavascript:emoticon(':x')
Mad. Right now I'm reinstalling all my programs. I would love to know how to fix this without a hard reset just in case it happens again....javascript:emoticon('')
Crying or Very sad

I had the same error today. But luckely i was only using ActiveSync 4.0, so i just updated to version 4.2 (I had to because of the new rom upgrade). I haven't had the problem since. But i have only tried it once... so i donno.
same problems with my Neo today.
Funny thing is that I could sync for 3 days then it suddenly stops. USB is recognized but then the "connecting" sign is just on and on and on.
I've tried all the methods from Microsoft web and from you guys in this forum but hopeless. (except for Re-install XP sp2)
Still searching the solution
Cheers

Yeah,
I seem to be having the same problem. It connects, then just hangs at "Looking for Changes." It doesn't even load up the list of things that it normally used to showing what it's comparing to sycn up. It was working FINE until just now....I've resetted the PDA, and my comp a few times already, and I even allowed all those ports access in both directions, both TCP and UDP through Norton Firewall...I'm completely at a loss....Any ideas?
