Check for new mail - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

Is there an add-on or a tweak where i can set times when it should check for mail
On my treo i could set it so it would only check for mail every 15mins between 19:00 and 08:00
Cheers

No you can't you can only set it to check every x minutes.
I am looking into buying a different mail client for my S100 as the one that comes with windows is crap.
I used to have profimail on my P910i which was great as it allowed a lot more confirguration and also HTML emails.

Cheers
Let me know when you get a decent mail app. All the one i've tried have been shtt

WebIS Mail is Great.

WebISmail is something I have just downloaded to try out. Will give it a go and let you know

don't think it lets you do this

if this can help you there is something under "Mobile Sync Schedule" that includes even peak times and roaming.
I'm using it daily but with an Exchange sync, don't know if you can do the same with a pop3

WebIS mail
Been trialing WebIS mail for a few days now and very impressed by it. Configuration is pretty good as far as mail accounts and sync times and just to have true HTML incoming mail is brilliant.
Pity you don't have HTML outgoing but we can't ask for the world.
I have it installed on my SD card and its a little slow but seems to take up quite a bit of space. Pity really that you can't uninstall the pre-installed clients and replace them with the better products.

i've been having problem with downloading emails. when i mark one or two for download, then i click on the send and recieve button, on the bottom right this blue status bar kinda thingy appears and to the left of it theres a 1/25 does it mean its trying to download 25 emails? and then after a good 2 or 3 minutes it gives up, giving me some error. i thing i'm gonna swith to profimail cuz i used to use that on all my other S60 phones and i'm satisfied with it.

I'm sure it won't be hard for a decent programmer make a lil addon.
Phone Alarm has something like that where you can set the times for peak and off peak calls etc.
Any decent programmer about??

From what I can see of WebIS mail it says 1/25 but its only checking against the server what it has already downloaded. So it maybe that's it already downloaded the 25 mails on the server it just has to check first.
So far no problems with WebIS mail and very impressed by moving mail directories. I have been deciding where to store the software and so moving direcrtories is a breeze.

e-mail help please

OK had my baby nearly a week now (1 week old Saturday).
I'd say definately well worth the outlay.
My e-mail is bugging me though.
Firstly, I have configured her to check for e-mails every 60 mins. Well it just ain't happening. I reckon she checks for my e-mails 2-3 times a day max. Of course I can go in at anytime and connect but, I want it to be automatic.
Secondly, my homermail wav file (e-mail notification works fine on SPV and xda 1) don't work all the time ? it plays sometimes but not all the time.
Lasty, when the server does check for mail, if I have cleared my pop3 account, through my pc then the nect check it downloads nothing and clears out all my e-mails, even if they are unread.
It's like if there is nothing on the server, it cleans my inbox on my xda 2.
I can understand why it happens but surely there are settings to prevent it (i can't find em). I like to keep some e-mails in my inbox, cus they can be useful. Sure they are on my pc but I want em locally and I don't want to sync my emails just my calender and tasks.
Cheers, Shire
PS still luv my baby, maybes I need a better e-mail application ?

POP email - incredibly inefficient (or it is me?)

I use my XDA II to check my work emails which are in a POP3 account (connecting over GPRS when I'm out and about). This works ok, but...
What I find strange is that at each connection it seems to go through every single message on the server regardless of whether (1) the message is already downloaded or (2) it is several days old.
This is incredibly slow and expensive when you are getting about 300 messages a day.
(To expand on this, assuiming I get 300 messages a day and set the email to download messages only from the last 3 days, and only to download the first 3kb of each message - on each connection the mail client still works its way through all messages on the server, which could be about 1500, taking about 1 second for each one. Using GPRS monitor I see I use something like 700kb - 1Mb on each connection. Crazy! )
I notice other email clients, such as nPOP are able to simply check and download new messages on each connection. (using about 15kb or so a time) So why cant the inbuilt email program do this?? (I don't want to use nPop for various reasons).
Any hints or ideas would be much appreciated. :?:
I feel your pain. I tried setting up my yahoo mail using the internal pop account as well. It would always have to refresh over 1500 mail messages which would take up to a couple hours. I haven't been able to find much of a workaround for this either. Any suggestions?
Yes!
I have started a couple of threads on this topic, with no response. I found I got hit with over $500 in data roaming charges in Europe, doing email that with the palm operating system (snappermail) would cost me less than $50.
I think there are two solutions. One is qmail. Qmail can easily handle this problem -- you just tell it not to check mail over x days old. That is a simple program. But I favor the second solution, npop. Npop permits the same filter (I think).
I have tried these against poutlook, with phenomenal improvement. When there are 30 already downloaded messages on the server, poutlook may take 100KB just to check mail, while qmail takes 3KB and npop 1KB. The main disadvantages are
hard to use one-handed
no multipart html support in npop
can't reliably wake the wizard up to check mail automatically
but not only do these run lean, they also run 100% on the minisd card.
What won't help is flexmail -- it seems to just be a wrapper on poutlook.

emoze.com offering free push email...any tried this yet?

www.emoze.com has just come up with a push email feature for mobiles and pdas.
i just wanted to know if anyone has tried out the service and how is it?
i don't have an outlook exchange server so i can't really set up direct push on my 8125.
I just checked and Emoze does not support the Qtek 9100 yet
try selecting the Tmo MDA.. same thing.. i'm downloading the program now to see if it works..
ok, stay away from it for now, it is in beta, but here's what happened to me..
1. it replicated my contacts about 40 times.. i had to go thru and delete duplicates... ugh..
2. Program on the PC desktop crashes randomly, it crashed 4 times in a 30 minute period..
3. kinda flaky performance.. it works as in the push email function, it notifies you, but then it took 3-4 trys on the PPC to get out of the notification/program and see the actual email in outlook..
give it time and if they perfect it a little, this will be very cool to have..

Cool, thanks for the input. Hopefully they'll fix the bugs soon so we can use it.
replicated my contacts also, it states that you cannot have activesync running while this program is running, which is kinda ridiculous...another thing is, it runs OFF of your computer, uses your OUTLOOK, nothing on their end, its just a piece of software...in other words, if your computer is off, no email....useless if you ask me
Ya know, it's a shame the T-Mobile's SMS-based notification feature isn't a bit better tuned. It really works well - just takes to long to notify your phone of a new event.
For anyone who hasn't tried it. When you go to the T-Mobile website, you can put in the info for one or more of your non-T-Mobile email services. You can use POP3 or IMAP4 servers along with your SMTP server, and you specify your email login and password.
After that, you can click on the feature in your MDA that retrieves specs for your email account from T-Mobile's servers, and pocket Outlook will set up an appropriate additional account for you in the MDA. With this all set up, you can, in addition to your normal way of checking your email, check your email account via the T-Mobile website or via your MDA simply by doing a Send/Receive on the MDA in the Messaging app.
The neat part that T-Mobile hasn't quite implemented 100% is that you can have their server monitor your email account for new incoming messages, and in turn send a "silent SMS" to your MDA to let it know when new email has arrived. Then your MDA automatically kicks off a Send/Receive, fetches whatever email is waiting on the server and notifies you.
This works quite well. The ONLY problem is that that it may take way too long for you to be notified that something new is on the server. This could be due to one (or both) of two possibilities:
1) T-Mobile's back-end servers may not be monitoring and checking your email server frequently enough. If it checks for new email every minute, that's great - but if it waits 30 minutes between checks, that's about the best you can hope for when waiting for your MDA to be notified about new incoming mail.
2) Even if T-Mobile's back-end servers "know" that your email provider's servers have new mail for you once a minute, that only helps if the "daemon" (or whatever process they use) sends the "silent SMS" to you immediately. If the "silent SMS" is queued up, and the process to send them out is delayed, or possibly scheduled to happen once every 30 minutes, we have yet another way in which it takes too long for your phone to be notified that new email has arrived.
Whichever delay is causing this, it would be fantastic if T-Mobile could fix it. If they did, this would, functionally, serve the purpose of push email for many of us -- especially for those of us who have unlimited messaging as part of our plan with T-Mobile.
despite the bugs, it worked great, and i'm gonna keep an eye on their progress..
This is basically the program i've been looking for. Something that I can load on my own PC (since it's on 24/7) and have it sync my inboxes on my 8125.. it was nearly instantaneous when it worked on my system..
a note to people that want to try this though...
1. BACKUP YOUR CONTACTS!!!!
2. Make sure ActiveSync is set to not sync anything, and turned off.
3. Then run the program..
I wish it was more stable, and i'd use it all the time, but until then, im sticking with POP updating every 2 minutes..
I can't get it to work on my PC in my office. My company uses a proxy server and the desktop app can't connect to the internet. Any suggestions?
not really sure.. but keep an eye on this thread from their forums, the emoze team might respond with an answer..

I think they started push service in their "live.web2mail" bbeta but I could be mistaken as I have not tried it. Even if it free it wont be for long as MS has pretty expensive licensing fees per user to use exchange server. I think they have 6 months where they can claim 0 users. The emoze you need your home pc on all the time. For me it would be ok cuz i always keep my pc turned on but for a lot of people i dont think they do that.
Any news on this? Is it working yet? I keep my computer on all the time and was looking at running Exchange Server from it to get Push Email, but maybe I'm better off waiting for this?
I've been using a mail3web live account for a couple of weeks and it works very well. I just had to set up mail forawrding from my own ISP. I'm pretty sure it's not push email but it works fine through active sync on the PPC as long as I remember not to kill the application. You can set it to synch with the sever as often as you like and as I'm a bit worried about getting a large bill and I'm not too wooried about getting everything instantaniously I've set mine to synch with the server every two hours. If I want to check more frequently I just hit send/receive.
Dave
Whoops - no I haven't discovered a new one! The above should read mail2web live account!

There's no tweak. mail2web just upgraded to Exchange SP2, so if you've got a ROM in your wizard that supports push (I'm using the 2.17 custom on my TMO MDA), sign up for a free mail2web account, forward your email there from other accounts, and follow the diretions to set it up on your Wizard, and you will get true push email now.
The only problem I have is that I forward my gmail to my mail2web, and once or twice/day I notice I'm not getting e-mail, sign in to my gmail account and under the forward it says gmail is having trouble forwarding to that account. I push try again, and it starts sending my email again for maybe a day. I think mail2web is either having a problem receiving so much mail (there's been a big buzz about it on xda and howard last few weeks), or else it might be a problem with their spam filters...
MC
thanx for ur reply...that's exactly what i did and got a gmail account too and everything's ok here...all my mails are directed to my mail2web account ( actually live.mail2web.com account)
But can not succeed in push to mail...my rom is the "test only" one I think it's the one before the official 2.17....Any chance to get it work though?
Many thanx...

[Q] WANTED: eMail Rules/filters for poutlook

Hey all.
I have tried Flexmail and found it wanting - I think mine had issues, activesync failed to sync to directory and the rules were quite limited. Still waiting for their support teams to sort out several issues with move and stuff. even if they can get it working I can't see it being good enough in it's control.
So we are back to poutlook and it's limited functionality.
Are there any decent programs out there for message filtering. I get 300+ emails per day and over 150 are total rubbish 50 are newsletters and notifications which I file.
and half a dozen orders buried in this lot that I NEED to deal with immediately.
any suggestion please
Cheers
G
Well - I don't know if this will work for you, but I have all my email come through my Yahoo account. On the server side, I have about 60 rules/filters set up. This way, on my inbox on my phone, I already get them filtered. I have been using Yahoo for years and now-a-days I get a spam email in my inbox about twice a year. If you have not set up a web based account yet, I would actually suggest gmail for the push capabilities. But I don't know how their filters or spam protection work.
Just as an aside, I used to use FlexMail and most of the time when I could not get something working, it was my fault. It is a very powerful application. I finally decided it was too powerful for my needs on my cell and switched to ProfiMail. You might want to check out their rules/filters. I don't use the filters on the phone, so I can't help you there, but it is a pleasure to use.

Hotmail is ruining my hd2, help

is it just me, or despite every method, setting, tweak humanly possible, Hotmail just basically sucks on this phone?
ive tried using the windows live client, ive tried using the htc email setup. ive set to headers only, text rather than html, sync only today, every 15 minutes. ive tried almost everything i can possibly find and still, it syncs 14000 emails and bogs down my phone whicl searching/connecting etc.
the only thing that works is to set the sync to 'manual" but even then, when i manually sync, total phone destruction (in the form of stuttering/freezing) ensues.
i get 500 exchange emails daily, puyshed in real time, no issues, lighting fast. Hotmail however...the worst.
am i alone ?
thanks
jason
14000
Yes you are alone.
I work in customer service so I'm gonna take a leap and say your frustration has blinded you.
Hotmail or windows live only syncs 50 e-mails by default. Take some time to calm down and explain exactly what is going on.
1) What ROM version do you have
2) What exactly are you trying to do
3) What program do you want to use. i e Windows live
4) What exactly happens i e. Is it immediately you sync via windows live that it freezes or is it when you try to run a program.
5) Have you tried a soft reset; and if you have have you tried a hard reset with only windows live initiated to see if the symptons persist.
We'd all love to help but help us help you.
I use Exchange and Hotmail both through the HTC email interface just fine. I have Hotmail on manual sync. Works like a champ. If you want, try going into the inbox first, then doing a menu-->send/receive and watch the status bar at the bottom.

There should be an option to only show that last day, 3 days or week. Do you not see that option when setting it up through Sense?

thanks for the replies. ill try ot be a bit clearer:
there are several ways to go about installing hotmail; i believe i've tried them all, with every possible configuration. they are as follows:
(please note that not only do i have sense disabled, i do nto have sense installed on my rom (see sig.)
windows live msgclient:
-- i constantly recieve the message "windows live is temporarily unavailable, please try again". keep in mind that i have exchange mail pushed in real time and two gmail accounts which sync every 5 minutes, no issues with them whatsoever.
here are my windows live msgclient configurations:
1) today screen options are unchecked
2) sync options: only "sync email" is checked
3) sync schedule: every 15 minutes, although ive tried manual and triead real time, same results.
4) syc status: synchronized
5) roaming: both boxes are checked, but ive also had them unchecked, no difference in results. still get this "windows live is temporarily unavailable, please try again"
6) messenger: unchecked
7) email: preview size is 15k but ive also tried every other setting, no difference. the other two boxes are checked but i have also had trhem unchecked as well, no difference.
8) about: version 10.7.0061.2000
after this failed for the millionth time, i tried using the htc email client setup instead. and uninstalled the windows live client. i get that same message constantly, AAAAAND my phone freezes up all the timne since it is constantly trying to sync 14k emails.
thats what i have thus far. the email works mostly. but the popup is crushing my soul.
any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
thanks guys,

You need an option in the setup to only have it pull from the last week or less off the server. Otherwise there is no way that I know of besides deleting all of your old emails on hotmail to keep it from pulling everything on their server, which will crash your phone depending on how many emails you have on there. Window's Mobile setup lets you pick how many days worth you need when setting up Yahoo.
Did you log in to the hotmail website? I know they made some changes recently to an Exchange server format. I know that with my exchange account it doesn't give me the option. It pulls everything off the server. So I move old emails to a folder that I created on my local hard drive and move them every week or so.
Is there an option to move emails to a folder on your local hard drive in Hotmail? OR maybe you can set it up on the website so that it only pulls a few days worth?

Yep. I bet you can set it up in that program. Either a local hard drive folder to move your old emails to or set it up to pull from a certain number of days. Now you are cooking with grease...
