I use/have used the Imate PDA, PDA2 and PDA2K... all of them lose all of their programs/settings (pretty much a hard reset) when the battery dies. Does the Hermes act in the same way? I was told by a sales person that since it has 128MB rom the programs install to that and you don't lose them when the battery dies like you do now. Is that true?
Hermes uses persistant memory. Won't lose apps in memory unless you hardreset. So your safe if battery runs out.

Good information, i have had a hard time with my i mate jam,,,,
thanks

Great, thanks for the info vijay. Can Anyone expand on how it tells the difference between a hard reset and a battery going flat then? Any othere differences in relation to this?

Devices running Windows Mobile 5 change the area of memory information is stored. Its called persistant storage and is one of the major benefits of WM5. Its slighter slower but all information is saved if the battery dies.
Older devices (WM2002, 2003, 2003SE) used to save information to the RAM. Faster than persistant storage in WM5, but RAM needs power to keep the information stored within. Thats the reason why data used to be lost if batteries ran out in the older devices. There is a back-up battery in the device is case of power loss but tend to only last around 20mins unless you replace or charge the battery.
Think thats about right, im sure i'll be corrected if i'm wrong.
Hope that clears things up for you.
Thanks silent... So how does a hard reset work then? if the programs are stored in persistant storage?
Also, it can't just be software based can it? Ie if i put WM5 onto one of my Imate PDA2's then that wouldn't keep the settings if the battery died... it would have to be a combination of OS and hardware right?

Well, the hard reset routine actively erases the persistant program memory. A bit like formatting a hard drive.

Yes.

When the battery of a Tytn dies ALL DATA is savely stored.
you can however, reset the device if it won't start a program or if data is corrupted.
1. If the device still runs you can go to the settings menu and select system > erase memory. this will set the tytn back to factory defaults.
2. If the device locks down on startup you can also turn it on and after it has been turned on pres the power button again and keep the power button pressed and press the reset button simultaneously until the device reboots.
Actually, there have been "unofficial" ports of Windows Mobile 5 for the Blue Angel series of Pocket PC Phones and they do indeed use persistent storage, just like the "official" Windows Mobile 5 devices do. Your device needs to have enough persistent memory available to support this in order for it to work, and the Blue Angel does. It is tricky to do, but does work.
im a noob in this Blue angel > WM5 thing and i did it too.
its not that hard.
to bad the build of WM5 for blue angel was a little heavy for the processor.
the persistant memory was there, so i could keep my data when my battery died.
finally i switched back to wm2003 because it was much faster.
now i bought a tytn and gave away the blue angel because this one is better.
Great guys, Thanks heaps for the help.
I 'm now using 2 gb of memory. When i turn off my screen for a moment and trun on the screen. There is nothing comming up. I have to reset my hermes. Pls advise..what 's wrong ? Before i used 1 gb of memory, i never seen this problem. One thing i use calendar plus on the today screen.
After selling my Wizard to get the Hermes, I have discovered that the Hermes is a VERY unstable device.
I have experienced (and still do sometimes) what you are experiencing. From what I can see, this is normal for this device. If this continues, I'll have to sell this and get something else. The other day my device did this and I called it from my house phone to see if it would even ring, and it did not. I guess I could live with the PDA locking up, but if it interferes with the devices primary function as a phone, it's totally unacceptable.
jcute, i was having this problem for a bit, but my issue only occured when it was on the charger and i temporarily shut off the screen, it would then not turn on and would have to softreset every time
i noticed this problem occuring after installing some software including weather software (cant recall exactly which) and skype, not sure which one was the main problem but wasnt using either hence their uninstall and correcting of the problem
good luck, try removing some recently installd software and seeing if the problem persists and perhaps try removing the microsd card and running ur phone without it for a bit to see if the problem is the card
time for rom upgrade ?
thanks for info. I tried to unplug micro sd 2 gb and press power button again ..it 's work !!after that i plugin micro sd again but some icon 's missing at the today screen. Ex. resco today icon , psshutdown, photo contact.....So the question is that i have to do this everytime when screen 's off???
After upgrading to AKU 3.3 and installing my programs only to the main memory, I've noticed far fewer lockups as opposed to before when I ran many programs such as Pocket Player or GPRS monitor from my 2gb sandisk.
I guess the moral of the story is, try not to install programs that access your memory card while your phone is in sleep mode.

I would not get a Hermes if I wanted it to be a phone primarily. IMHO most of these devices XDAs, are primarily PDAs with a phone tacked on.
Just a humble observation
Mike
my problem is when i scroll or drag the side bar too fast (inside memory card),the device will hang and need to soft reset.
can anybody solve this problem??
Goto www.softwinter.com and try out storage tools. I've found that a regular repair and defrag help the load times from the storage card tremendously. Also, someone mentioned above that reformating your storage card with fat32 helps and I too can confirm that. Let us know if that helps or not.
Lance
one more thing, when i reset my hermes, it hangs at the welcome screen. I always get this problem.
Hi to All:
I have read few posts about the low performance of TomTom V6.030 that comes with Advantage.
Some people say that the problem is because TomTom takes 4 times longer to draw the picture in landscape.
Other’s says that the problem is de VGA screen in the Advantage.
Whatever the real problem is, the question remains: Why HTC includes in a brand new (and expensive) PDA, software (TomTom) that simply doesn’t work as supposed to do????
They don’t test before selling it???
Again, we have to pray that some one in this excellent forum find’s a solution!
In the mean will, I’m gone send a email to HTC and TomTom support to se watt they says.
I really don't have any problem with TomTom other than the internal GPS takes 3 or 4 minutes to lock on sat's from cold start.
I added mu USA and Canada maps and everything works. No slowness or anything.

it's really not HTC'S problem, it's TOMTOM, they don't seems to care about landscape VGA device, anyway, it's really just a bonus that HTC include the TOMTOM, and whether it's fast or slow (not that slow), we are still using it without problem.
btw, have you try the latest version, i heard the screen refresh rate is now fix for Landscape VGA device.
It is still relatively slow for TomTom 6.030 in Landscape. But this is no surprise because in reality the screen in the Athena is a portrait screen (Try TomTom in Portrait mode to see the difference). Each single frame needs to be rotated 90 degrees.
Someone said that in WM6 the frame buffer performance is a bit better.
lowres
Does someone have a utility to force an application to use the QVGA resolution? I have seen a tool force highres that forces an application to use the VGA resolution. Can someone make a forcelowres version to test TOMTOM on QVGA in landscape mode?
trayap.exe
I have removed the trayap.exe from the init part in the registry. By removing this part the bottom tray does no appear anymore. I have noticed that now my GPS fix is within 5 to 10 seconds. Can somebody else try this?
I haven't noticed any problems with TomTom. It runs fine on my device if i'm in low res or high...meaning QVGA and TrueVGA. The screen looks the same when I go into TomTom and doesn't seem slow to me compared to my CoPilot software.
Tomtom
I noticed that tomtom only ran slow when i ran it from the micro drive as if your sat at traffic lights or that the micro drive turns off as we all know after few seconds to safe battery, problem is when you start moving off again it has to start up again to send the data to tomtom of your current location. and sometimes can constantly spin down and up if the map is not moving round alot.
Try installing it on a SD Card i got mine on a 2GB Sandisk Ultra II and have no problems what so ever now, as bristol used be very slow for it on the micro drive with it having to spin up and down to send data to tomtom or even receive the gps commands to say where you are, and it now takes around 40seconds lock on at my house before i set off, but that is only cause use the quickgps application.
I find TT6 fine either in landscap or portrait.
However, if you use a large map (eg the map of western europe), it slows right down. Much better to use a smaller map, but then you can't navigate across borders.
...and we wonder why people prefer MioMap or Igo!
Microdrive or SD?
This is actually a gamble not a question! I couldn't get the TomTom which came with the Advantage to work with my maps so I wnet back to 6.010 but have to have me my map installed on both microdrive and sd card because TomTom seems to randomly decide whether it will see the microdrive or not and if it does it then does not search the sd card.
The only solution to force it to use the SD card is to start in safe mode and use WM Storage to disable the microdrive. But if I start the device normally it is impossible to predict whether it will see the Microdrive or not.
Any ideas anybody?
I am running WM6.11 - explode I think with the HTC extended rom apps. However I notice that under WM2003 there is a slider to change the allocation of RAM between storage and programs - I dont have this facility on my IIs and run out of storage RAM on the phone despite having plenty of free RAM for programs. It seems that even if I install the application on the card, RAM is still eaten up out of the phone storage - I guess thats the OS system.
However, If it can be done in 2003 then surely WM6.11 can do it - but I need help to re-allocate RAM between storage and programs.
Thanks
it is inpossible in WM5\6\6.1 your information is wrong
storage ram/program ram
I had the same problem, when I converged my EXTrom. I had 93mb in programs and only 64mb in storage. It takes much more storage than program ram, XPLODE, my question is was there a possibility that I/we could have changed this BEFORE we converged?
Also, I and a few others are having a problem with your 6.11 sound disappearing after "X" amount of uses with it (see some replies the past few days)
Don't get me wrong, YOUR 6.11 upgrade is FANTASTIC, I just lost sound and the capability to answer my phone as well as NO SOUND!

The same problem here!!
I was also wondering if there is any trick to increase the storage capacity from the programs RAM
FYI: In WM5/6 Storage and RAM have nothing common. Storage is a part of flash memory, that is not used for ROM, and RAM is fully used as normal, regular RAM. Thanks to this when you take the battery out, you never loose data and settings like in case of PPC2003 and older.
That's why there is no storage-RAM slider in WM5/6.
In case of BA, after switching to WM5/6 you have 128MB RAM and that's all. Cannot be less, cannot be more.
Talking about capacity - if you went through correct procedure, you should have repartioned flash memory giving back some space that was reserved for ExtendedROM. All the info you can find in the Wiki.
Thanks for the info - maybe I have not repartitioned my RAM then, I just put it in bootloader mode and flashed it!
I appreciate your impatience with people new to this and this is probably why many senior members just say 'its in the wiki' with the unspoken bit implying find it yourself. However the wiki is not an easy document to find what you want and I know I'm not alone there.
Still, I wil revisit the wiki and see if i can find info on this topic that I have previously missed. Thanks.
partioning the MEM
I followed the wiki to the letter, however, it did not say anything about giving back to the EXTrom. I just went by the procedure and I have 93 mg to storage and 64 to program. no Extrom, and flashed to xplode's 6.11 along with other programs. I do not have to worry with loosing my programs any longer however, the program space is what the problem is. there isn't enough room for most of what I like on my BA. LOTS of space in the Storage. One would think that it should have been one big storage space for both just like a regular PC.
I have had my BA for 2 years and never need to ask any questions I just followed the WIKI. Now I have these questions.
Now that I did load 6.11, now I have no sound after a few days of use. It just disappeared. I can't hear from it and no one can hear me. the phone will dial and it responds to calls but, no sound.
I Would appreciate it of the seniors would not make people like us FEEL stupid, when we ask a make sense question. I have searched the WIKI and through the forums and I get no answer thru these means , therefore, I must ask the question, when I feel it is necessary.
Thank you for your rationality.
gcopher
gcopher, have you ever try to hard reset your BA after that sound problem appeared?
Sound problem after 6.11
Yes I have, I am an A+ certified hardware and network geek and I know enough about programming to be dangerous, I have successfully used this site for the past 2 years up grading my BA with the latest, until now. I decided to upgrade to xplode 6.11, of which I thought wa excellent and still do, I used my BA for several days without a glitch (other than the blue tooth problem with the BA as I think everyone else does, that I have to wear in my shirt pocket when I am talking) The only thing I did was install 6.1 word and excel, when I reset (soft), then the problem occurred, since I have hard reset and even re-installed WM6 to try and shell it. No fix. I am looking in the forum archives for a sound fix, if any. Thank you for asking though.
Here this last few days is the first time I have actually posted something here in the forum, other than posting about having the same problem with the bluetooth problem everyone has, the BA has a VERY small chip for blue tooth. I have several (6) BA for spare parts. I have replaced 2 screens on my own, but I repair cell phones for a hobby. (mostly motorolas) I get the parts fairly cheap. I like to take junk or something that is broken and repair them, I get some self edification from that, kind of weird but I am a musician geek (bass player, and active with a band in the Tulsa, OK area)
Thank you for the suggestion though.
I hope you had a great 4th!
If sound issue doesn't go off after proper HR (the one with NO YES YES), all you can do is to go back to a tested ROM (even wm5) and check if sound will work again. If your RadioROM is up to date (1.13 or 1.15) it might be just coincidence with hardware failure - speaker/mic or just sth on the mainboard.
And about Wiki:
first step of the wizard after choosing upgrade to WM6 from 2003: Expanding the Storage memory
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blueangel_WM6_WizzardUpgrade1_WM2003SE0
Anyway, gcopher, your flash seems to be partitioned correctly.
This thread seems to have developed into two directions but thats OK I have something to say about both.
I have read the wiki - used the unhide, unlock and repartition programs successfuly. Then flashed 6.11 xplode successfully. I then go to the memory option in Settings->System and have EXACTLY the same problem as before - the ram is divided into storage and programs and there is no way that I can see to shift some program ram to the storage or vice versa. Perhaps most users dont run many programs on their BA's but I start running out of storage on the phone when there is still loads of program ram - the fact thet I also have a 4gig SD card doesnt help. I find that even when I install as many apps as I can on the SD card I still run out of storage on the phone.
As for the sound. I too lost my sound AND the camers when I upgraded initially - nothing seemed to work and I was convinced it was a hardware fault. I was so fed up I took the batery out and left it for a few days, long enough for the internal backup battery to also run down. Once powered up again it all worked perfectly and has worked ever since.
Frustrating as hell isnt it when you feel like your the only one with a problem and noone else has ever come across it - even more frustrating when your given simplistic advice in minimal detail
I will do a lil explaination, when you delete the partition for extromyou add this space to the phone storage, the only one known way for increasing storage in WM5/6/6.1 is with ramdisk, but it is not working well in WM6/6.1 it is inpossible to make it with slider and allocate memory to ram or storage as in WM2003
arcnet: and to finish storage/RAM problem: Like in the PC you cannot just like that exchange Hard Drive space with RAM, same way you cannot just like that exchange storage (that is something like Hard drive space) with RAM (that is like... RAM
And to explain it all: If you run out of disk space you usually don't try to use some of the RAM as the Hard Disk Space. You can just install another hard drive. In case of PDAs and your BA in specific: consider installing all the big applications on the SD card. This should solve your problem completely.
Tanks Coach!
This is what I am working on now, checking, and going back, being that I have quite a few other BA parts I can go back and replace, however, I will go back and even do the WM2003 if I have to, I have tried many times to hard reset, however, I think I may have caused a problem with that, (I can fix it) but my BA just restores itself. I have placed most of my regular programs on the storage card. It just comes right back up to my background and original settings. I will have to pull the card ans reset it. Either way, I will have to trouble shoot the problem, I have checked out the "soundfix" file no go. The uni-directional file already exists and will not re-install. I will re-install WM5 and see if it comes back on OR start replacing parts.
I had saved the EXTrom on my storage card, as the instructions said.
The program storage has all of the space, and the Storage file has very little, seems it should have been the other way around, this is what the other guy was talking about. If it was possible to go back and re-allocate the two, so storage could have more of the space.
Thank you for your kind response, this is what I love about this site. I feel good about have all of the knowledge and access to programs for this wonderful Device of mine.
Have a pleasant day!

Sorry Arcnet, I do not intent to take this thread both directions...... I should have taken the sound prob to a different thread,
I needed to voice that I wanted to understand your delima,as I had the same wonder. I used my storage card for all that I could and I still have used 92% of my program ram space and still have more than 60% of my storage, as only using 2% of my card. I moved all I could to the card and reclaimed about 10%, however, If I wanted to place more on it, it would still take up more as there is only 64 mg available in Programs and most of the allocation in Storage.
What xplode is trying to say is, the BA comes with 64 mg of ram built in, this is all you can use for programs.
The slider was for EXTrom and storage, that is more like a hard drive on the device. This is separate from the RAM for programs. What we merged was the storage, and got rid of the volatile mem (EXTrom) and gave it ALL to storage. it was never available to programs.
Be sure that every time you install a program...choose your card, if at all possible, the program will tell you (my experience) if it will not run from storage (your card).....................G
Adding to this,I have successfully reloaded the xplode 6.11 with success with restoring the sound. I will let you k now IF it goes out again, in about a week.

Another problem that I noticed (with my BA anyway) is that even if I choose to install applications in the SD card, the storage space reduces as well
I don't know if this related to the BA or the ROM (which is sundream's rom) but this is what's happening with my BA. As a result, I run out of storage space very rapidly..
Any clues??
Just because you select to install to storage card does not mean that all files are copied there. Some files HAVE to be installed in the windows directory. Try installing memaid or tweak2k net and transfer dlls to the storage card, that will free up some memory , depending on what you have installed
Thanks for your answer scousemartin
I have another question though: how much memory can we get if we aplly the resize stuff with 2003??? What I mean is: is it worth the hastle??
If you did not repartition flash to get rid of ExtROM you loose 12 (or 16, I can never remember) MB. It's always worth to have more storage memory, that is otherwise totally lost.
If you have a "sound disappearing" problem, try NOT TO CLOSE (by X button, add to ignored) any players when they are playing. Especially Windows Media Player. That solved the problem for me.
I have an 8525 that is about a year and a half old running Schap's 4.31 WM6. My device has been unable to come out of standby after a press of the power button with any memory card in (I have tried 3 different ones). The screen remains black and I must soft-reset to use.
Is there a patch/fix for this issue?
BTW this is not a new problem, I have never really been able to use one, just have never gotten around to doing anything about it until now.

As an experiment, can you copy the contents off the card to your PC ( for safe-keeping) then format the card and see if it does the same with an empty but formatted card?
If it resumes ok, then I assume that it is something you have on the card (possibly an installed programme) that is attempting to run on resume and conflicting with the resume function.
If it locks up even with a blank card then we need to track down old threads on this - it has been discussed before
