Greets gang,
Several days ago I started getting the subject message appearing in my WinXP system tray. It was on my Gateway laptop and it would appear over and over again, citing 'Unknown Device' when you'd click the annoying ballon. My Jam wasn't even connected at the time.
I basically blew everything away and restored my laptop to factory original settings. Problem persisted. I thought it might be hardware, but the message has now disappeared, only re-appearing when I plug in my Jam. My USB Bluetooth dongle plugs in fine, no errors.
Someone else had bent pins on their USB port or plug--I see none. Anyone else have issues with this, or can anyone offer some help?
Presumably you have installed (re-installed) Active Sync on the PC? As you may already know, as standard the JAM and many other PPCs are not recognised by the computer unless Active Sync is installed [properly].
www.softick.com provide an excellent utility to have your PPC recognise as a removable drive without using Active Sync.
Yes, ActiveSync has been installed & re-installed. New development? I plugged in an 80Gb external hard-drive to that laptop and Winblows is telling me its connected to a non-hi-speed USB port, which it is not. Could be something there.
I'm going to re-flash the Jam to factory ROM, then I will dig into the USB issue.
I had this problem and I tracked it down to the fact that I had picked up the wrong cable!
Same connector but for my camera
The wrong cable thing may very well have been it, but I was also having probs with an external hard drive I was using. I ended up rebuilding my laptop twice and now things seem to be fine. What a drag.

I have the same problem.
It seems, this problem appears mostly on laptops, not on PCs?
I tried to uninstall\install, repair with all ActiveSync data removal or leaving it - No result.
Also, tried to replace the cable (which is ok, im sure with the one from the camera) - No result.
Temporary way out: do Off\On with qtek9000 on cable connect.
Another way out: Turn On the "Enable all incoming beams" flag in Start -> Settings -> Connections -> Beam (this path may vary depend on your Universal brand name). As I seldom need to connect via IR to other devices, I have switched this option off to consume power.
DOES ANY BODY KNOW, HOW TO FIX THIS BUG?? Any Ideas?
Qtek9000 with laptop Toshiba Satellite Pro \ Win XP SP2
it seems dat a noob like me at last can give a help
i have the same problem last time, and as i trace it down, the problem lies on the cable.
as u know that we all use mini usb (usb cable type b) for our o2 mini, but not all type b cable support pc connection, some will only give charging access
i have 2 mini usb cables, one comes from my external hdd, and the other is i buy it myself. the difference is that the 1 i bought actually have a shorter connector (maybe the problem due to this)
so try to buy another cable, as i don't know any other way (reinsatalling pc os, hard-reset device or reinstalling active sync won't solve the problem)
NB. both cables are working when i plug it to my external hdd, so maybe the cable is not faulty. one of the advantage that i got is that i can charge my mini without disabling the active sync usb connection
sorry for my bad english
i can almost essentially confirm that it is NOT the usb cable.. I have been using a usb cable i had around the house for syncing my phone, and it has worked perfectly ever since I first received the phone (over half a year ago), but all of a sudden, i plugged in my device, and received the "usb device not recognized" error message... does anyone know the cause of this?

Ok, ive got activesync working fine on one of my pcs but on the other it disconnects after about 3 mins. both have identical software antivirus/firewall-wise the only difference is one has a hardware modem/wireless router(the non-working one) and the other uses a wireless usb hub to connect to the internet.
Ive tried pulling the ethernet cable from the back of the non-working pc to no avail, disabling windows firewall etc but nothing stops it disconnecting after about 3-4 minutes.
Ive tried all the suggestions regarding tcp/ip, they were already correct as were the dhcp ones.
im completely baffled by this
the wmstorage program works for a bit longer but gives the error "the device is unavailable due to an i/o error" after about 5 minutes
anyone have a clue why this is happening?
Odd question to ask. Is your unit set to switch off after 3 mins? Just check if the device is on/off (you can have the backlight off, but you should able to see something on the screen) when the activesync disconnect.
on battery power its set to 2 mins but on external (usb?) its unticked. it works ok on the other pc though thats the thing so i assume its a pc settings issue
As you plugged into the PC directly (not through a USB Hub)? USB hubs have been known to cause problems.
im using a usb extension cable straight into the usb 2.0 card , the only other device is a printer and the keyboard which share a usb hub on another port.
The cable works fine with other devices ie digital camera/camcorder so its not a faulty cable.
Im using a hub on the pc that works (and its only usb1.1) and it shares with the wireless dongle
One thing i did used to get while transferring data was the avg email scanner popping up while my ipaq (which worked fine) was connected. i disabled the email scanner to see if it helped and rebooted but it was no different
ok-think ive fixed it-the (brand new) usb cable must have been faulty cos i connected the mda cable straight into the pc and it worked
thanks for all your help
Alright so I've done quite a bit of searching but I can't figure this out and its really frustrating me. I have mfrazz's Windows Mobile 6 release 3 installed.
Rom version: 10.1.0.811 WWE
Rom Date: 8/11/06
Radio Version: 02.25.11
Protocol Version 4.1.13.12
My problem is that activesync will not recognize my MDA no matter what I do. I've hard reset my phone, installed and uninstalled activesync 4.5 a bunch of times. Done this on two different computers, but when I plug the mda in, nothing happens at all. I plug my roomate's MDA in (running a different rom) and it instantly recognizes the phone and begins to sync. I really want to try different roms out, but without an activesync connection I can't. Any ideas guys?
Thanks...
ps. Let me know if this should be in the WM6 forum, I wasn't sure.
Well, this problem has been discussed hundreds of time in the forum, just read through the forum,I'm sure you'll find answer to your problem easily, there was no need to start a new thread,or just hit the 'Search' tab at the top of this very page and enter 'Activesync Problems'.
Cheers!
Thanks for the feedback-
It seems like I've read every single thread related to this problem, but in almost all of those their phone is at least recognized by activesync. With mine, even after disabling all firewalls and doing all the suggestions in the other threads, I just can't get activesync to even recognize my phone
If you still can't sync at someone else's computer, you probably have a bad USB cable, or worse, a bad connector. Try a different cable (any USB to micro should work, they aren't specially wired or anything). If that's no help, try blowing out the connector jack on the phone (use a magnifying glass or ? to look for debris, too). If that's no help, you may be screwed. You can try these guys, but it'll be expensive (like, replace my phone expensive): http://www.drcellphone.com/index.php
Are you at least getting a charge light (solid amber) when you plug in?
Yea, it charges just fine and I get the solid amber light and everything. I use the same cable to sync my roomates' mda, so that isn't the issue. I'm really stumped. Im almost positive its something with the specific rom I have on my phone..
I've been forcing it into bootloader mode to try to flash any other rom onto it (I figure if i can just get ANY rom on it... official tmobile, or a cooked rom, etc. then the sync problem should go away) but I'm having troubles there too.
You're not trying to do this with a Vista computer, are you? There are known problems syncing with Vista-based PCs.
If you use Mozilla Thunderbird at all, you can try using FinchSync, just to see if the hardware is functioning properly. This is theoretical, though. I haven't tried this myself, so I can't offer much on FinchSync.
Nope, I first tried it with 3 different XP computers and then for the hell of it tried it with Vista. No go with either one. I've pretty much convinced myself that it is the rom I have on my phone (mfrazz's Windows Mobile 6 release 4) because I never used to have any problems whatsoever

OK, let's take stock of things. I'm assuming that you are using XP.
Check in activesync :
File -> Connection Settings
Make sure "Allow USB connections" is checked.
'Uncheck' the 'advanced network functionality' in the phone.
Start -> Settings -> Connections tab -> USB to PC
If that still doesn't work, I'd try the uninstall, reboot, reinstall activesync and see if that helps any.
I'd also be suspecting the usb cable/ mini usb port of the phone. Recharging a device and getting a data connection are two different things. I have a k-jam that would charge via the USB cable, but would not sync, XP kept complaining about an unknown device. Turned out it was a broken connector in the mini usb port of the phone. It maybe that usb cable connector is not making proper connection with the connector of mini usb port of the phone, try to 'wriggle' the usb cable plug a little and check if it tries to make a connection, while connecting to the phone, sometimes it helps.
Cheers!
I've made sure everything you suggested is correct. I didn't know that charging and data connection are two different things. I figure that if it charges, it should sync. The USB port on my MDA is really loose, and I can only get a charge when I plug in the charger and "push" the plug to the right an hold it there (usually by twisting the cord around the phone in a way that keeps the pressure on the USB socket). So now that you mention that, I'm just guessing that it charges but its so loose that I probably won't ever get it to sync again.
Hmm..
Is there any way at all to flash without an activesync connection? I tried flashing a bunch of roms by forcing the phone into bootloader and then running the RUU, but it always fails because it says I don't have an activesync connection...
Nopes !
You got to have connection with phone through usb cable.Get the mini usb port of the phone repaired or replaced, only then it can establish connection and flash a rom.
Cheers!
Alright, thanks a lot for all of your help! Looks like maybe I'll take the phone apart and see if I can actually see any disconnection on the main board, etc. Not sure if I'll try to make a repair attempt myself because I've read that the solder contact points are pretty small
I have a tmobile MDA Vartio2 and I have numerous problems with it and need to upgrade soon but this one I cant sort.
I can't connect via usb to sync with my laptop. If I set up a new connection it will sync but as soon as I reattach to sync it wont recognise the device so I can't keep everything up to date. it isn't the cables - power is fine and they work for other things.
I am runing it as I bought it 17 months ago - no upgrades or cooked roms or changes of any kind.
Can anyone help.
I want to upgrade to something else but I always sell my old ones so I want to sort the issue first obviously even if I sell it.

Try turning off the 'advanced network functionality':
Start -> Settings -> Connections tab -> USB to PC
That's what I had to do to get that hack called activestin...^WActiveSync to work reliably via USB.
Really, I've not noticed any difference between having it on and off as far as functionality goes, so really, I have no idea what the RNDIS mode stuff is even good for.
I have just tried your suggestion but now it isn't recognising the device at all. It is seeing it as far as power goes - its charging over USB but activesync isn't seeing it.

Check activesync itself:
File -> Connection Settings
Make sure "Allow USB connections" is checked.
If that still doesn't work, I'd try the uninstall, reboot, reinstall activesync dance and see if that helps any, provided that you are using activesync under XP.
I'd also be suspecting the sync cable. Recharging a device and getting a data connection are two different things. I have a blue angel that wouls charge via the USB sync cable, but would not sync, XP kept complaining about an unknown device. Turned out it was a broken wire in the cable.
Done all of these already I'm afraid - I have 4 or 5 cables and none of them work for this - and I know they are all absolutely fine.
OK, let's take stock of things. I'm assuming that you are using XP.
Hermes with the advanced network functionality turned off doesn't show up at all when you plug it into USB. So, we have a lower level driver issue going on.
Provided that you have not turned off all sounds in your current sound scheme, does the computer make any noises when you plug the phone in? If the data side of the connector on the phone is in order, the computer will make some kind of beep noise when you plug in a USB device.
Also, have you looked at device manager when the phone is plugged in? With advanced network functions turned on, a network adapter should appear. With out the network bits, it should show up as an HTC USB Sync device.
To eliminate something on the phone software-side (I know, you said that you have not touched anything, but try it anyway, this is windows, the environment that gave rise to the term bit-rot), put the phone into boot loader and plug it in to see if the computer sees it. It should appear as a HTC USB Sync.
If it still doesn't show up, I'd be popping over to another computer and checking to see if the phone will be recognized by that system.
For the past few weeks when I plug in I get references to acquiring network addresses (like a wifi network) but then it does nothing. Now I get nothing at all when I connect apart form power.
I have already tried re-installing active sync (just done it again in case I did something wring too)
I refuse to beleive its my cables at this point because I have 3 in front of me that all worked perfectly before everthing suddenly went wrong. Unless someone had cut all of them at the same time - this couldn't have happenned.
I am going to try and plug into the pc and see what happens (as apposed to the laptop which should have the connection.
I think this is good news (on the part of my laptop) because its the same story on the pc.

Double edged sword there...
So we have potentially eliminated the computers (good), this leaves the phone itself (non-good).
Hard reset?
Otherwise, I'd start to suspect the USB connection on the phone itself.
I would say that my chances of rescuing this phone rather than getting a new one are getting slimmer
I think it is probably the port itself and I can't do anything about that one
Anyone want to buy one with non usb syncing functionality ?
I've got an 'old' XDA II (PH10B), and I don't want to miss it. My problem is the USB connection. Due to unknown circumstances, the USB chip has lost the identifier, so that I can't synchronize with USB connection due to unknown device. Serial, bluetooth and irda still works. Is there any possibility to restore the USB-identifier back into the PDA. I've restored the rom and radio via serial, but it doesn't fix the usb-problem
USB sync
You may change your USB sync cable. Your problem may be solved
That was my first trial!
The problem is exactly described above. and it has nothing to do with async ,pc, cable or something else.

Thank you. I never would have thought of that, since the phone is charging.
But changing the cable actually worked
hmmm...
i kind of have the same problem . my device freezes when i connect it via USB to computer .
Actualy it does not freeze when Advanced USB functionality option in Settings is on ... but ActiveSync does not start ...and nothing happens .
The funny part is that it worked ...some time ago and i tried to connect it to another computer and it works .
the only thig i haven`t try is to reinstal windows on my computer
Try plugging it into another USB spot on your computer. The cable and phone obviously work, which suggests that maybe the USB hub on the computer doesn't have enough power to charge and function. This usually happens when using front panel USBs. Try the rear USB ports.
usb freeze
i'm having the same problem as quantico said
"""my device freezes when i connect it via USB to computer .

well....mine did worked untill one month ago,and then suddenly had this problem..
the problem is not the computer that i'm sure,i have tested on a friend's computer and problem persists..and i have reinstalled my os from 32 bit xp to 64 bit xp and active sync works fine, cause i have another device a hp 6915 and it's ok...
the cable seems to be the main problem, but now i'm not sure...i have tested the pins with a ohm meter in the both ends of the cable and it doesn't seem to be somethin wrong..apparently..i will reinvestigate
then i thought the problem was my rom(3 monts ago when i bought the phone did upgrade from wm 2003 to wm6.1 using Shekhar's rom which had a few bugs, and so decided now to go with the latest,Ather's dark edition 6.1 which so far works like a charm(best recomended for hima)...but again problemo not solved..
i still think that the cable or the back connector might have a problem, but here in romania is hard to find a qtek 2020 data cable and also a cheap one so...untill anyone has some brilliant ideas ..i'm just charging my phone from usb
i have retested the cable with the ohm meter at both ends and cable is fine ,no broken pins,no shortcircuits...
i have pluged the usb cable into the pda moterboard connector and tested the usb at one end of the connection and on the mainboard of the pda at other end(phone dissasambled no power) all tests indicated that the fizical connection between the usb and motherboard pda is fine, and no other shortcircuits or broken connection..
that leads to another conclusion...there is an internal pda circuit or chip mailfunction of the usb function due to hardware or software problem that i cannot explain..typically for those models.....
those problems are not new,a lot of mp3 players after a while crash like that with usb device mailfunction or card readers or usb hubs.. but why?
so...we're back at the start of this thread
It seems that I have the same problem with my qtek. Some strange things happened. Unpredictable disconnections with usb. As above, I updated several month ago with the Ather WM6.1 rom. But the strange usb disconnections still exist. I bought a new usb cable. No change.
Since today the qtek doesn't charge either anymore trough any pc or in my usb charger in the car.
I guess something went wrong inside the pda...
usb drivers
I had problems with win7 and usb drivers. Came across these and it allowed me to flash roms. As i was having connectivity problems I thought these may help
xp
the cable is not the problem ...because i tried on another computer ..and it worked ...
the problem is the XP ...and the drivers

its it win 7 32bit or 64 bit?
im using win 7 x64 still have the problems
hey all
Just got in my x1 and it works a beauty... however i am experiencing a strange issue when connecting the x1 via USB to my PC.
I have a MicroSD card, though my PC identifies it correctly and i can browse through it, when i try to transfer certain files ..it takes horribly long time like 2-3 mins for ~ 1 MB or so (which is very bad for a USB 2) and most of the times the connection breaks up, with a Windows error ,saying the connection was terminated due to an I/O error or remote device terminated.
I have the same problem using both Active Sync and direct USB transfer.
I have checked this with 2 different cards and both have the same issue, so its a prob somewhere with the phone...
Did/Is anybody encountering a similiar issue ? Any suggestions.
I have tried changing the USB cables as well as installed the s/w's many times.
Cheers
Try using a shorter cable. Or use something like this:
http://www.incomp.hu/bolt/arukepek/USB -MINI USB GYUJTO.JPG
I have a couple of these adaptors and they eliminated the problem for me. I don't know the reason for the problem, or if I'm right about the length of the cable, but it worked for me.
Never had the problem again.
Try changing the USB hub that you use.
ya..i tried changing the USB hubs and cables as well... still no luck...
I just googled I/O error and there are plenty of topics. I couldn't find anything useful though.
Some people suggest that it is either a pc usb hub malfunction or a defect in the micro sd. Which is strange, because I have never had that problem since I changed my usb adapter.
Keep looking man and if oyu find a solution don't forget ot post it .
ok...i uninstalled my USB drivers and reinstall them on my PC...and things seem to be working fine ,so this is not a problem anymore...though when i tried to do Internet sharing via USB , my x1i froze to death, it happened a couple of times...so need to still look out.
I had similar issue when I use longer usb cables, especially when they are of low quality. With short USB cables the problem seems to be missing, so I guess it is something connected with the USB communication, not exactly X1 issue.
