Hi - I've been lurking and trying some of the less intensive, flashing-not-required tweaks with success. But suddenly today, I'm having an issue.
My MDA/Wizard is all of a sudden frozen! I havent done anything to it since I got to work today (except blug it in to charge it) and on my way to work, it was operating fine - I watched some anime, read an ebook and listened to music with no problems.
What I've noticed:
- Signal light flashing, but cant get to phone app, doesn't ring when call comes in, gets a generic on-screen notification with no Call ID
- Screen frozen, can hear tapping noise, but nothing happens
- Goes to sleep mode and Power button can wake up as normal, but still frozen and Power button wont turn off device
- Buttons make noise when pressed, but no result
- Of all of the plug-ins (3) and built-ins (5) that are usually on screen, my Messages one has suddenly disappeared.
Today Screen:
*Date
*Owner
*Tasks
*Messages - GONE
*Agile Msgr
*SPB WMP plug in
*SPB Weather
*Device lock
The last thing that I installed was a .cab file from the Big All Tweaks Thread - it was the one that got the Caps/Fn indicator and "E"dge indicators on screen. But EVERYTHING was working after the install and til 15 min ago (14hrs total). I've soft reset about 6 times and even took out the battery with no luck. If I plug it into USB, it charges, but no recognition from AS.
Please help! I'm at work, my contacts and stuff are on home PC.
I'm running the original T-Mobile Rom and I'm not unlocked yet (I was trying to get up the nerve this weekend!)
Thanks in advance!
Hmm....no response?
I'm hope now...
I am beginning to wonder if my problem isn't related to the issue that pple seem to be having with the MDA zapping the SD card. I took out my card and then did a soft reset. My device is workign just fine with out it. Seems that if I put it bak in, there it goes freezing again.
The card seems fine when I put it in the reader, but if the MDA is having a problem with it, I'll be mighty vexed, as it is a week old 1gb card
If anyone has any imput, please chime in.....
I am wavering between trying to figure this out....or just going for it and updating my ROM while I'm going thru all of this anyway...
:nervous:
i have the same issues with about the same software loaded and freezes. to recover from the freeze, i press the reset button and while the phone boots up i press the phone "answer /hangup" buttons once or twice and it boots up.
i do notice something strange after a reboot- the programs on the 1gb sd card are no longer recognized. when i check file explorer, i can see the wizard has creadted a new file store location called 'Storage Card" and it has renamed my stoage card " Storage Card 2". All my files are then seen on "storage Card 2" but cannot be run.
i then deleted "storage card" and rebooted. the wizard then automatically renamned "sorage card 2" back to "storage card" and all my installed programs were ecognized and worked just fine. i suspect there is a bug in the OS regarding stogae card recognition at boot up . any ideas on this ?
thanks
I have a 8525 that has been unlocked and SuperCID, with all the Cingular ExtROM stuff removed. When I use the phone with a 1 GB MicroSD, I don't see any performance issue or slowness.
However, when I upgraded to SanDisk 2GB MicroSD card, it seems to slows down the unit by about 10-20%. As a matter of fact, pressing the ON button give a delay of 1 seconds before the screen turned on!
I just want to verify if this is a known issue or I have a defective card or I need to upgrade to ROM 1.09.
Holy crap on a stick!
So that's why the Hermes is so slow to turn on when I hit the button! When I bought my Hermes (TyTN), I bought a 2GB micro the same day.. and slapped it in! It hasn't been out since, really. I definitely see your behaviour here!
Hmm. This is the reason I wanted my screen to stay on, when I'm on a call. I hate that it takes me about 2 seconds to hang up, after the call is done.
If there is some way around this problem, phone-call-long-hangup-annoyance goes away too. ;D
Hey Brad,
Thanks for the info. So it seems like this is a known problem that the device slows down with 2 GB card.
Just out of curiosity, are you running a TyTn / 8525 and what ROM version do you have?
I'm running a TyTN, but the ROM version is whatever the beast was born with. I did perform an upgrade on the radio side, and I did perform an unlock.. and I was at 1.04 out of the gate...
I have a Sandisk 2Gb MicroSD Card and running 1.35 bl1.09 Rom. I confirm when pressing the ON button gives a delay of 0.5-1 second before the screen turn on when the MicroSD Card is inserted, but I don't think it slows down the whole system. That's fine for me. No big deal!
does it make a difference if the screen turns on 0.5 to 1 second later?
I mean it will take you the same or more time to place the phone to your ear...
It may or may not, but it is ODD to someone (me) who previously saw the screen turn on INSTANTLY, and then later on saw that it doesn't. Furthermore, some slow down was experienced in overall system operation.
IN any case, this is called TROUBLESHOOTING, not about someone being picky about having the screen turn on 1 seconds later...
point taken,
microsd cards are relatively slower than the internal ROM in the hermes, therefore it is expected that performance will slow down if you have apps installed on your micrsd, or ringtones, or tsk files.
if the microsd card is purely formatted (blank) is there a performance penalty?

Uh.
Well, first, you don't turn on the phone and then put it to your ear. If it is an incoming call, the screen turns itself on. If you're calling out, you turn on, wait, then go to phone.. then call...
As well, the phone goes to my ear in about 0.1 seconds here. ;P I'm not a 72 year old arthritic man.
Seriously though, the only reason I care, is because when I hang up, it sounds like I _am_ an addled old man! I say "bye", take the phone from my ear, press the "on" button, wait 1.2 seconds or so, then hit the end button.. and wait for the hangup. All said and done, that can get close to 2 seconds, just to hang up.
Yes, that is a long time. How long does it take me to hang up on my Treo, or on a land line? The Treo's screen is on during calls, so... perhaps .2 or .3 seconds. Landline? I hang up before I even manage to get the phone from my ear! The button is 2mm from my thumb when I'm holding the phone!
Anyhow.. someone commented in another thread that a lot of these problems are because the tech is new. Well, I'm sorry, it isn't. It's because companies aren't learning, and because Microsoft isn't developing the OS fast enough. I bought a Compaq IPAQ in 2000. Literally all of my complaints with it, about the contact system, about syncing, about backlights and leds, about dialing.. they're all still here!
MS needs to address some of these usability issues. It isn't a big deal to allow the backlight to dim more than currently, or provide for toggling leds off, or screens on during calls. It isn't a big deal to improve the contact system after 6 years.
It's just poor production values.
most of the 8525 users i have seen on this board all had the same complaint about the backlight taking 1-2 seconds to turn on.. and sorry to say mine does it with or without my sd card. my 8125 was instant.. and i would imagine after a few updates all of this will get better

Yes, I am aware of the slowness od Flash memory (SD, MicroSD, MiniSD, etc.). However, I didn't have this type of slowness in my 8125, MDA, or even on the iPaqs.
I have formatted it before, but to no effect. I didn't install any "system" type file in the card, such as .tsk or ringtone that is used by the "phone" application.
On another note: when I took out the card and reinsert it, sometimes the PDA won't recognise it. I.e. nothing shown under Settings -> System -> Memory or in File Explorer.
In any case, I want to find out if I have a bad SD card.
What is the speed of your cards? Faster rated cards could be a solution...
It's the standard SanDisk 2 GB card. I no longer have the box, so I don't know the speed.
Regarding faster speed, I don't think any manufacturer now have a faster version (i.e. Ultra version type). The only one I know that is very fast is ATP brand, but they don't have the 2Gb version.

Not too seem contrite here, but why do you(when hanging up) first push the on button? Is this something that must be done on the TyTn and not the 8525? Please keep in mind that I'm a newb here. I just hang up "normally" on my 8525 by hitting the end key. Even after it has gone into "pseudo stand-by mode". Screen comes back on, if I choose to hit the power key to cycle device into stand-by mode, fine, if not, I'll make another call or let the backlight/system go into stand by a short time later. Please advise

How can I hit the end key? I *must* set my device to ignore all buttons but the power button, otherwise it just keeps coming on in my pocket.
So, when the phone goes off because of a call, only the power button awakes it. Which key is the "end" key, anyhow? I don't think there is such a hard key on the phone, is there? Anyhow, even if there were, again.. I have it set to ignore all button presses except the power button, when off.
Of course, a mature and "cool" OS, would realise that there should be a checkbox for "When on a call, and when phone is off, button X still works".

I just ordered the 2gb Ultra off of Ebay yesterday, I'll let the group know how it does regarding speed preformance in a few days.
Did anyone try to change the clustersize when formatting the card? I think this cuold improve read/writespeed. Also it usually improves things to defragment also a memorycard.
It may be a newbie question, but I have tried to find it out for a couple of weeks now and failed:
How do I turn the Universal off, apart from taking the battery out? Does Windows Mobile have a menu option that turns the deice off? I can't find the key combination that does it either.
What is the safest way to reset it? If I use the reset button, some recent text messages get lost.
I am using Helmi UNI AKU3.5 ROM. Might it be the rom's fault?
Hi there,
In fact, most PDAs are never "off" because else it wont turn "on" to do the reminders...
That said, few 3rd party tools allows you shutdown your device or restart it.
Like http://ppcsoft.narod.ru/english/
Or GsPocketMagic++
I think VJEschaton can put it into a "deeper" deep sleep. I can't remember if this works on the Universal, it should work on all HTC Xscale devices, but I think it was only tested on the Magician.
The device can be forced into any power state you want. But the OS doesn't support that, so it's OEM specific typically.
V
I had that prob with losing messages..
How you can fix it, is if before you reset you press the power button one (to make it sleep) then press it again (to wake back up) then do the reset.
It will keep that exact state its at then.
I think this is what you mean?
Hi Guys,
My touch screen and LCD screen NOt working! Phone Switches ON and comes to standby mode. (i hear all the booting dings and dong melodies)
I neeed to take a backup of my device. to do so i thought i'll use my mobiler and see the phone screen through the PC! unfortunately the last time i used i used the phone as the 'storage device' option. so every time i connec the phone to the pc windows open up my phone's storage card.
Is there a possibility i can change this back to active sync without using the phone's screen.
Or are there any other suggestions for me to take a full backup??
This might be overly complicated but all I can think of at the moment is to write a mortscript or something similar, stick on on your SD card and create an autorun on the card to run the script when it's inserted. The script could change the registry key associated with activesync/usb storage when the device is connected.
Yagetme?
You might be able to get it to work if you do a hard reset or perhaps flash another rom, as if I remember correctly, the default connection setting is set to Activesync.
However, if you're planning to solve the touchscreen, LCD problem, try to flash another rom. If that doesn't work, maybe it's a ribbon connection problem? I had a problem similar to this on my Diamond.
well, atm i see alot of ppl haveing problem with the display, dunno why this happens but it does.
my display turns black sometimes, to get it back working i turn out the battery for 10 seks, put it in again, and try to turn device on till it works. i will bring it to the service.
a hardreset won't help u, because ur data will be lost after hard reset.
