New Imate PDA2 is ALMOST here (links to buy too) - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

http://www.expansys-usa.com/product.asp?code=PDA2
They are still waiting upon a ROM update before the release. A few bugs were in the XDAIIi.
Or should I buy the 2020i for about $300 USD less? http://www.smartdevicesdirect.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_28_246&products_id=799
WIth all the awesome people here, It will be a no brainer to get the fixed Imate ROM and I would not have to wait.

Qtek 2020i or Imate PDA2
I'm not sure if it's a typo or not, but the specs on the Qtek 2020i (from the link you provided), shows that it is BT 1.1 compliant, whereas the IMate is BT 1.2 compliant. That makes a difference with certain headsets like the Jabra that needs the handsfree support for caller ID (at least that's what I've been told).

typo
Ya, a typo. It is also mentioned on some other site that it has 640x480 camera.. The hardware is the same as the O2. All made by HTC.
I am kind of Tempted to wait for the T-Mobile MDA IV. That 640x480 would be nice!

MDA IV
When do you expect that puppy to ship? All I've seen is vaporware since the Feb 5 announcement. At least people are taking pre-orders for the PDA2, but so far, no word on the MDA IV. I'd love to have one too, although I'm a bit concerned over its size and weight and whether I'll be waiting until 2006.

A question about ROMs

Since the I-mate K-JAM and QTek 9100 are "identical" would a QTek owner be able to use an I-mate ROM? If so, why are people saying "Oh I'll pay the extra £50 for a K-JAM just for the support from I-mate" when people who own QTeks can latch on to such support (i.e. updated ROMs) for free. Sure, it may change all the software branding from QTek to I-mate, but its a small price to pay.
Just a thought.
I paid the extra $$ for 2 reasons.
1.) The K-Jam is available sooner
2.) I-Mate does support on their devices here in the US and Qtek doesn't.
So basically I am paying a premium to have it earlier and if there is a problem with the device I want a place here in the states where I can send it for repair.
Didnt really answer my question, but thanks ;p
I believe (at least in the UK) the store is responsible for coordinating repairs (no matter what they try and convince you!).

you cannot log into imate download area unless you own an imate, also who is going to risk updating a rom from a different brand?
i know i wouldn't
I picked the K-Jam for a couple of reasons:
1. Earliest availiability of the product
2. I could find the official web site and it was in English
3. The service center for them here in the states is within walking distance of where I work.
I don't have any problem with the Idea of installing ROMS from other vendors on my device, but then I'm fairly brave when it comes to messing around with them

Did I buy my MDA Vario too soon?

I just got my Vario, but now i am thinking that i should have waited for the Vario II (Hermes?). Have i made a mistake? Should i send it back under my 7 day return and wait?
aint being funny but i fink it looks crap...
http://www.newmobile.nl/eur/en/photos.php?phone_id=18fc907
i'd rather have the current Vario...as it's got style to it....that looks like a simple t mobile phone  looks a bit blaah if u get me
Eh? I think it look pretty nice, better than the Vario I. And a 400Mhz CPU? I would not mind some of that.
What should i do?!
well the 200mhz aint bad....plays movies without a problem...music is fine...tom tom works; so it aint a bad phone...
but if your main concern is the CPU speed then go for it...
I think the hermes looks like a great device, an evolution on the current vario. If you can wait and afford the difference in price go for it, i'm sure it will be a cracking device.
Otherwise go for the vario, the hermes being available will not make the vario any less useful and there are already loads of hacks available for the vario.
A tough choice, but bear in mind even if you hold out for the hermes, there is always somethings bigger and better just around the corner.
whichever decision you make enjoy your device

No matter what phone you choose to buy, there will always be something better coming out on the horizon

Agreed, but the when the device is coming out so soon (this month?) it might be worth waiting.
Where are you based ?
I just got a vario and asked about release date of vario 2 ... (Assuming you actally mean the vario rather than i-mate or xda mini S) then Germany will be getting it this month but the T-Mobile aren't planning on releasing it in the UK till Q3 (ie October at the earliest)
BTW isn't it a 300Mhz CPU rather than a 400 Mhz one ??
HTH
Too soon? You mean too late!
I've had mine for aaages now, i'm nearly ready for an upgrade!
Other than that rather tasty looking camera application on the Vario 2 i think the XDA Mini S looks far nicer, as an ex XDA IIi user im finding it very hard to fault the XDA Mini S at all, its a great phone.
The Front-side looks okay to me, but the keyboard is ugly as hell, I like the keyboard of the MDA Vario a whole lot more.
I'm also keeping an eye out for the hermes but i haven't heard anything about any official release dates. I'm leaning toward the Imate branded JasJam but no clue when its coming out. Anyone have an idea? also is its 3g/umts compatible with the Cingular 3g?
At last I heard, the Hermes will not be compatible with US 3G networks, but that may change by the release by Imate or Qtek.

hi, im also having the same dilemma, i currently have the imate JAMin and looking to get a device with a keyboard and im leaning towards the imate k-jam, but i am eagerly awaiting the release of the hermes or imate JASJAM.......i dont know if i should wait for the hermes or get the k-jam for now.......i have emailed and called the imate company in dubai and they advised me that they have no idea when this device will be released internationally......it is still under testing they said.....

i'm actually looking for an i-mate jamin and i currently have a vario (k-jam). i'd gladly trade mine for yours.
You dont say which country you are in so we can give you valid advice. The vario 2 has a 300mhz processor and uses a microsd slot - so 1gb max for now. It has a better camera but far as i can see does not have stereo speakers like the vario. If sound is a priority or if you already have a minisd card stick with the vario - otherwise go for the vario 2, i am certain that overall it is a better device. see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=41660
waiting can be fruitless
I've waited since November for the Nokia N80 to be released. It was always just around the corner. Now here we are in May and still no US N80. There are even rumors that it will not be released due to some G3 issue.
I wish I wouldn't have waited and just got the Cingular 8125 back in November. I could have been enjoying it the last six months.
Point is... you can drive yourself crazy always looking out on the horizon. I would recommend getting the current version and having fun with all the mods. When the Hermes comes out, give it another six months for more mods to come out and the price to drop and then you can switch again if you want. But by then rumors of Hermes II will be floating around with beter keyboard, 800mhz, 5mp camera, built in 10gb hard drive optionsl, thinner, built in GPS receiver. LOL Just my opinion.
My brother just got an N80. I had a friend of mine buy it for him from Saudi Arabia and then had one of my friend's mom bring it with her to texas. But i'm gonna say its gonna be a while (2 to 3 months) until it gets released on cingular.

Qtek 9000 on '3' UK

http://www.coolsmartphone.com/news2436.html
Coolsmartphone reports that the Qtek 9000 will be on 3 over the next comming months (probably never or in Autumn  )
Thats good news for you lot looking for operator settings
Coolsmartphone is surprised at them picking Qtek over making its own brand. Probably because operators want to move out since HTC is releasing its own brand and because Qtek are the only manufacturer to give A2DP.
Off topic... what do you think is going to happen to i-mate now HTC is merging Qtek and Dopod into the HTC brand? I read on MSMobiles that i-mate plans to release over manufacturers devices and not the O2 Atom!!! It becomes more interesting now and lets hope that operators keep on selling HTC handsets.

Anyone can explain price difference btw Qtek S200 and o2 neo

Hi...
i would like to buy a HTC prophet derivate...
as far as i understood from reading the wikipage
there is no technical difference btw e.g.
dopod 818pro, qtek S200 and o2 neo...
However, I oberserved a big difference in price for the latter two in germany (around 80-100 €)... dopod is not available here...
So does anyone knows a reason for this ?
I would very much like to stick to the cheapest one (of course),
but maybe there are some minor differences...
I also read that a dopod with english rom boots faster than a Qtek version with german rom ??
However, one could change this just by loading a new ROM, right ??
thanks for clearing things up...

They are the same apart from the badge painted on them.
Well mostly anyway. They differ only in the software each provider adds to the basic specification. For example O2 will add O2 Plus.
You can indeed flash one prophet ROM with the ROM of the other prophet - but be careful otherwise you will end up with an expensive paper weight.
The price difference relies upon the software bundled and the warranty and tech support you get.
QTek costs less because there's almost lacking tech support, but at least you get twice as much of warranty (2 years vs 1 year) than on other brands.
Hi Rayan...
in fact, the o2 Version is cheaper than the QTek one...!
But thats a different story... Just after i ordered the o2 mobile on monday "night", i noticed that the price was higher on tuesday morning (similar to the Qtek) - maybe i asked too much questions
However, i ordered for the cheaper price; lets see if i will get it...
cu.... Marcel
P.S. in generell i have the feeling that technical support is always a bit disappointing... usually you find more help in these kinds of forums
Hint: O2-prices can vary a *lot* between online shop, O2-stores, independent phone stores and the MediaMarkt stores.
Be sure to check that!
cu
Hi ...
yep, true... But i just got my o2 neo last Friday from an internet store and... the display is heavily damaged... one can use it but it has a huge (20x10 pixs) spot of dead pixls...
So.. having bought it in a slightly more expensive o2 store would be nice now as well... lets see...
cheers.. Marcel

What Variants of Hermes are Available in HKG

Hi Hermes Owners!
--
Just wanted to know what variants of the Hermes are available in HKG. I'm on my way to HKG in 2 weeks and am looking to purchase a second PocketPC Phone.
--
I really fancy the HTC TyTn or dopod CHT 9000 but I like the HTC TyTn more because the CHT 9000 has Chinese characters on the thumb board which is a bit confusing if I'm going to use the device in English.
--
The dopod 838 pro is nice and all, but I like the look of the TyTn more.
--
So this is the question... are the TyTn and/or CHT 9000 available anywhere in HKG? If yes where can I get it and how much would it be? If they are not available is the 838pro already available, how much is it going for? Of course I'm asking about English OS devices please. Thanks in advanced for any info.
--
Regards from Manila
Pards,
Dopod838Pro, CHT9000 and O2 Trion are available in HK. Only the first is the official one (with local warranty) and widespread. All of them are available in English.
I like the O2 trion design, but I dumped mine since it has alignmnet issue and bought Dopod instead, whihc has the almost same design and with local warranty since I live in HK. But the Trion is cheaper...I dont like the HTC and CHT 9000 design...
Bummer no HTC TyTn... so you would suggest the 838pro over the other variants cause it has warranty. However I live in Manila so the Hong Kong warranty wouldn't really do me any good do you think I should wait for the 838pro to get to Manila it would probably take ages and be much too overpriced... We don't even have the 838 here yet officially [they are a lot in the tiangges of V-Mall, I even saw Cingular branded ones but brand new ones are so few]. How much did you get the 838pro there in Hong Kong?
I got the O2 a month ago for 5.2K and the dopod is now 6.1K (on 24 months installment) with 1GB uSD.
I heard that dopod838pro will be released in Manila this month..
Well I don't think they'd accept int'l cards for those installment deals [tried to purchase a notebook on installment last January at FORTRESS and I was told they don't accept int'l credit cards] so I'd have to pay cash I guess. Hmmm 6K for the Hermes... is it AKU3.0 already? I have AKU3.0 [by Ivan] on my Exec and am loving it... I just need a spare phone really but the HTC s620 still hasn't been announced and SAMSUNGs SGH-i607 is slated for an end of the year [possibly early next year release] so I was thinking why not get the Hermes first but 6K HKD is kinda steep for a spare phone, I tried using a v3i as a spare phone but missed the full sync that outlook and windows mobile does... if the 838pro will be out in Manila this month then I might see it here before I go to HKG on the 20th... hopefully they price it competitively. I hear the CHT 9000 is around 36,000 PhP in Taiwan but then again the chinese strokes on the keyboard are very confusing... oh my now I don't know if I should wait for the HTC s620, Samsung SGH-i607 or just get the Dopod 838pro. Also there has still been no additional leaks about the Universal successor [HTC Omni] which was mentioned a few weeks back, I was hoping to see even mock ups or planned specs atleast about that... anyway sectorlord thanks for all the great info really appreciate it.
I just saw the MDA T-Mobile Variants in Mongkok... sells for 4.8K ..
Wow, looks so sexy and the front keys layout and shape is the BEST of all the variants..
