Finally unlocked!!! using serial made from cradle mod.

I finally managed to unlock my XDA, now I can truly say to be a proud XDA mobile owner in Italy! ;-)

I was too excited to wait for the delivery of a serial cable from the States and I tried to use the cradle circuit (to open it you need a special screw driver to lift the 4 screw hidden underneath the 4 rubbers).
*** IF YOU ARE NOT AN EXPERT DON'T USE THIS SYSTEM ***
you could seriously damage the cradle circuit and XDA!! Not jocking....
I connected the wire of the 9pin rs232 to the beige connector on the cradle circuit as follow (please note that the connection of only the first 3 lines below didn't work for me):
[Con2 is the beige connector, pins are counted form the left facing it]

Note that the last connection really made the difference for me (thanks XDA Dev. Peter Poelman!!).
I experienced problems when using Manipulator with my Notebook, it was just sitting on "scanning" mode looking for the com port...
Using HyperTerminal I could receive from XDA but not able to send command.
I eventually tried Manipulator with my desktop PC and... GOT IT!!! The com port has been found in 4 second, and after having pressed on "unlock" I was UNLOCKED in less then 1 minute!!! Yippiieeeeee!
Still don't know if the problem was:
- XDA with low battery charge
- a false connection on the serial cable
- or a problem with my notebook
But this is not important anymore now ;-)

You can have problems with rs-232 on laptops for the following reason.
a 'real' RS-232 voltages of 12v (+&-). Some laptops just procude 5V levels and if the other side stricktly implements RS232 it just will not work. To come back to your list: I doubt if it was the battery charge. You could argue wether it was a 'false connection' or a 'problem' with your notebook' but in a way the last two were right.
For RS232 the advice is always to first use it on a desktop system before using a laptop.

XDA 2 / TomTom / Serial Port (Im a newcomer to XDA)

Yesterday i purchased an XDA II, I have TomTom, and a Garmin GPS Map 76 S.
Garmin unit works perfectly on my Laptop with Navigator software.
While at the store purchasing the XDA2 i also purchased the Serial Cable, Part No AHTX2SCN.
The end of the serial cable and the GPS cable are both Male outputs, but i managed to gerry rig a cable to connect them together.
TomTom shows a few ports, infrared, BT on com6, Serial Cable on Com1 com9, com2, serial on usb.
When i try to use Com1, the port is not available.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this ( i cant see how to disable infrared) or any suggestions as to what GPS receiver to use instead of the garmin.

Go to settings/connections/beams, make sure beams is unchecked. Also you may need to add a null modem adaptor between the serial cable and the xda2 cable, or you can cross over the wires by desoldering , on the serial end swap over lines 2 and 3, in other words desolder 2 and 3, put 3 where 2 was and put 2 where 3 was.

Initially there was nowhere to untick "beams", now there is and it is unchecked, i never unchecked it, and can't explain why it was like this, the XDA has been acting strange though, locking up, being very slow etc.
I will look for a null modem adaptor, and report any success or lack of back here.

Apart from the "beam" issue, you must have a "proper" null modem adapter.
It should work.

Finally i got the GPS to work with some parts from Maplins ( try Radio Shack outside of the UK)
Using the Serial Lead i described above, i purchased the following items from Maplin, the guys there were very helpful, letting me take the follwoing configuration outside to check if it worked.
I purchased the follwoing :-
Low profile 9W Male to Male Gender Changer part number JW57M. I needed 2 of those. (basically two small gender changers)
9 way Null F-F 2m part No VD76. (basically a null modem cable).
Connected them all up, and GPS now works. The resulting lead is a bit untidy / long, but for now i've just used plastic ties to tidy it up a little.
Total cost of the above parts was just short of £15.
Hope this helps someone.

You could have got a very tiny male>male null modem adapter from us for $5.90, or a slightly bigger one from Expansys for £2.94 !

You can do this a lot cheaper.
Several possibilities:
- buy a plug for the Qtek @ http://www.gomadic.com/ipconplug38s.html and one for the Garmin GPS @ http://www.pfranc.com and a short piece of shielded wire. You just have to connect 2 wires (Tx from the Garmin to Rx from the Qtek), and this works very well.
- for those who find the connector of the Qtek to small: buy a regular serial cable, cut off the 9 pin connector and solder a Pfranc in place.
There are a lot more possibilities, like powering everything from one source (GPS and Qtek). And price is a lot lower than ready made stuff...

Bluetooth Qtek2020 tools etc

Hi all, I've been reading up here for the last 2 weeks but am still unsure what to do. Want to active sync and surf through laptop only using bluetooth, at the minute the com ports are 18 upwards for laptop so this may be the only problem I have in trying to serial communicate ? perhaps. Is there any bluetooth tools I can use to assist here or should I be looking to try and change the com port numbers to a lower number in the laptop. Running Qtek2020 1.72.00WWE, radio 1.12.00, extra rom 1.72.752. Everything else works ok Parrot car kit etc so I dont want to upset anything.
Been through Xp but can only view com port settings but cant seen to find a screen thats lets me change them ?
A friend has xda 1 and he says go to bluetooth manager settings advanced but there is none of those choices on my phone ?
Any idea on where is best to start - had phone 4 weeks and still cant work it out - any rough pointers would be greatly appreciated.

I'm writing this mobile on qtek2020 connected through active bluetooth yahoo ! yes thats wire free finally.
I installed xp sp2 which allows you play around with the com ports, took an hour or so but am flying now. Have to test my broadband speep through it now.
I was losing faith for a while and even cosidered 2 5 metre usb extension cables ( now that is sad all this so i can surf from me bed)

Serial Port for Athena t-mobile ameo

I cant find a pinout for the 16pin plug and was wondering where I can find it, but I dont think that would help me anyway.
I have a requirement for a Standard Serial port (RS232 type not USB).
Does anyone have any experience/advice on how to do this?
Do USB to serial adapters work?
Is there a mini SD to Serial port that anyone makes?
Any other ideas?

I am trying to avoid a wireless conection. What I am trying to do is use the Athena as a moving map for a glider. To do this I need to make use of an external GPS NMEA source. The software I am using works fine on a pda that has a std com port, I am hoping for a 'quick fix' to try it on the athena.
will this work, I havent looked for drivers yet tho!

I have to ask the obvious question though, why not use the internal GPS receiver in the phone? - if the application software you have isn't capable of switching the internal GPS on (some struggle with this) use Fransons GPS Gate to activate the inbuilt receiver and configure the ports, I would expect the inbuilt GPS to work quite well in a glider to be honest, and it does output NMEA data - what mapping application are you trying to use?
USB / RS232 converters are not the way forwards though, the mini USB port on the device is not a true USB port, it will not work with this sort of hardware, even if it did the converters generally don't work well as they don't use standard RS232 voltage levels - Mike

A good question. The external NMEA source contains additional sentances for things like accurate air speed and vertical speed that comes from a flight computer making measurements of the air. This is used for some of the calculations on the PDA. The software I will probably use is called SeeYou http://www.naviter.si/products/seeyou-mobile.php. There are several others, but this seems to work best in Landscape which is how I want it.
The internal GPS works fine with the software just to give map position.
I have managed to get it working by emulating a NMEA output over Bluetooth from a PC. I will try something like the Bluetooth to serial adapter and see what happens!

Use OBD Reader for WM6

Hi,
I have an SX-66, and I used to used OBDGauge with W2003SE, the thing is I upgraded to WM6, and the program runs, but I get an error:
Error: Failed to open serial port
Does anyone know how to open a serial port under WM6?
I love this program and it works so well, I would hate to downgrade just to use it. I know it works for WM6, because a buddy of mine has the HTC Tilt and he uses the same program and it works fine for him.
If it is of any help, I use a ELM 323 connetion to serial.
If I figure it out, I will let you guys know how I did it.

Also for those of you using WM6 on your SX66 with a BT GPS, I was able to connect mine when I used the BroadcomCorp_BT1.6.0.600 update.
I now connects flawlessly. Only thing is the connection takes a while to sync, like maybe 45-60 sec. I went from Miami, FL to Orlando, a 3 hour drive and it did not disconnect once. It also creates an extra Bluetooth file on my settings, but allows me to use the command manager to turn it off or on, so thats fine with me.

Do you connect your ODB reader via bluetooth?

Ok so everything is up and ready.
I have an ELM323 connecting to my Sx66. I am able to communicate beautifully with my Cars ECU now. Already have seen a few thing that need adjusting like my timing.
Well anyways. As soon as my wife gets home, I am going to take pictures. I will send you guys the looks. The good thing is I found the original data cable on ebay from Cingular/Siemens. It is USB and Serial, but it has an adapter to also charge it. I was worried, because my cradle did not have serial, but I know you could get an serial/usb adapter (but someone told me it would not work this way).
Anyways, upcoming plans are to do a little tweak, the same one from Youtube, called the Aximizer.
Also, one more thing are GSM attennas worth their money?

So I am not liking something with OBDGauge, like the fact that it is a pain in the rear to get to work on my car. When I replied, it worked, now it is not. I have to diddle daddle with it until finally it works, takes 5 minutes (not very practical). I have been reading the forums and alot of people have problems with OBDgauge. I am going to install something else: If anyone you know of any programs let me know, must support WM6.

OK a heads up.
For those of you that want to do a little project you will need 3 things to get your blueangel to work with the OBDII reader in your car:
1. a serial null modem: you can find one at radio shack
2. serial cable data cable, a converter serial to usb will not work.
3. and an OBDII with elm 323 or 327, also autoenginuity has a great one package with a badass program that only works with their reader.
I am in the process of making a program with my brother-in-law for this to work with the ELM devices as we have notice that most programs are limited and do not feature things like oil pressure and miles per gallon.
I wish I knew how to create a dyno program, but I will leave it upto others to come.
I only know of two programs that work well with WM6 under the ELM that are free and they are: OBDGAUGE and ScanTest or MicroOBD.
anyways I do not know much about making a program for WM6, but my brother-in-law does. I am going to try my best with him to develop something, when I do, I will put out here for you guys to use.
I would like some new tips if possible so that we do not have to struggle too much.

How does your buddy connect his tilt to the OBDII reader, is there some bluetooth serial adapter involved? I have a Kaiser (and can't believe that the Tilt has a serial port or USB host) and am currently looking for exactly the same thing to do.

Any updates of apps för OBD reading?
Or just the same old same old apps?

I would like to know also. I have a bluetooth ELM327 device that connects fine to my Palm Lifedrive, but when I try with the Tilt running WM6 I get the "failed to open serial port" window. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks

END QUOTE. Admittedly, this is originally dealing with ActiveSync, but I did discover the "New Outgoing Port" setting inside the Settings/Bluetooth folder. Click on COM ports. Select the device you wish to add (mine is called CBT). Hit next and select a COM port (I am using 5). I am going to test in the truck. Eureka! It works! Make sure the com port you select in OBDGauge preferences is the same you assigned to the BT ELM interface, and it should connect and start scanning. Hope this helps.
