been rob for 14mb by xdaII - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

XDAII default setup
there a folder call storage card
and it's taking 14mb of space
how do i deleted that, and free 14mb?
i have sd 1gb card, which is in another name. so i don't need to storage card folder.
the storage card folder is always there, ever since i got this xdaII without a sd card.

The folder called 'Storage card' is actually your non- volatile RAM - originally intended to store a backup your contacts and such in case of a hard reset.
Which is what the 'flahman' programs are in your startup folder - they run the backup system for your contacts and calender and such.
It is actually RAM space on board the processor chip (Or so I Believe) so you are not losing any RAM from elsewhere.
It cannot be moved, but if it really bothers you, you can remove an entry in the Registry to make it disappear.

Universal - What files can be moved to SD card?

Hi!
In order to conserve memory space on the Universal what are the fiiles that can be moved to the SD card without affecting its performance?
Lets start by making a list.
a) Moving IE cache, cookies and history through registry settings
Go to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Cache".
You can change the default value "\Windows\Profiles\Guest\Temporary Internet Files" to "\Storage_Card\ie\cache".
Change the other values in the Shell Folders section of the registry to the folders you created and then soft reset.
b) Today's themes can be moved to the SD card's root directory
c) Ringtones?
d) Camera's pictures and recorded videos?
e) pim?
f) IE favorites?
g) Voice tags?
h) Others like dlls etc
Could the required reistry settings be posted here, if necessary
Thanks
This is a very interesting topic IMHO.
Worth to be "revived"!
What else can be moved to SD?
Thx!
JP
keep in mind that "main memory" is flash ROM on the Universal. Technically not very different from a SD card. More of a question "what files do I need to have on the device when the SD card is not inserted".
Unlock the extended ROM and move that contents over to the SD card - gives you 10 MB more Flash ROM.
There is not much point in moving DLLs and other stuff over to the SD card, since those DLLs etc are in the system ROM which is locked. they will still occupy the space even if you have "moved" them.
You cannot influence the true main memory (the RAM) any more in WM5
Picture & videos
Pictures and videos can already be stored to your SD card by opening the camera and clicking the setting button, then going to tools and the general tab. Select Storage Card from the drop down menu where it says 'Save as'
I wonder if in your ROM version the changes you make to PIE will keep. My experience with changing the default PIE cache size is that it will not stay on the new setting, but reverts to the old value. It may take a few days, to a week but changes are not persistent.
A few issues to consider
First, on soime devices there is a delay between coming back from sleep and getting the storage card active. This can mean that programs stored there won't work correctly. An example of this is MS Voice Commander. Anything that will be left running shouldn't be installed on the SD card.
Also remember that an SD card has different characteristics than RAM and one of those is a limit on the number of times that a spot can be rewritten. Putting things like your PIE cache on the card isn't a great idea unless you want to have errors or keep replacing the card. For data that doesn't change frequenty, it is fine.

Newbie question regrading storage cards

I'm new to WM5 having previously had a Blue Angel running 2003SE; so far I like my new toy by am wondering about the pros and cons regrading where to install applications Storage Card versus Main Memory. Obviously, installing on Storage card keeps memory free - this is a good thing, but will applications run slower from storage card?
What expereinace can you share regarding thsi?
Thanks
Chris
In WM2003, internal storage ROM is only used to store a backup of the OS and vendor extensions, and is only read during hard resets. Volatile RAM is used to store the OS, files, and applications during regular use (unless they are installed on the SD card), and so their storage must compete with the RAM needed for running programs.
WM5 changes everything -- with WM5, the OS, applications and files always get stored in a nonvolatile storage, be it internal or external, and this is separate from the RAM. Thus battery loss does not cause you to lose installed applications or files. RAM is totally available for running programs, and is not used to store files which are rarely used. There is no more competition for RAM between stored files and running programs.
The WM5 OS and applications running in the background will always use a certain amount of the 64 MB of RAM. You can free it up by removing unnecessary applications. You can also free up the non-volatile storage space by removing vendor extensions and cleaning up temporary files. See this thread, and search for "0506" in re: O2 XDA Exec ROM.
As I have not received my XDA Exec yet, I cannot comment on the speed differences between using internal storage and SD storage. Obviously both are slower than running programs stored in RAM, and depend on the speed on the storage card. But the difference between installing on a SD card and installing in the "default location" is less in WM5 than in WM2003. Installing in the default location won't reduce your available RAM, for example.
I'm sure others have opinions on how best to optimize memory.
thanks for the answer. I posed the question because I pretty much ran out of memory on my device. I have installed in Corporate mode, so don't have O2 active etc. I have just done a hard reset & will now install everything on my storage card just to see what happens
I have had a few WM5 devices. Basically install everything on a removable card. Only install on the internal storage utilities that you are likely to keep around and restrict this to a minimum and small things, like vbar, TRE, etc.
The disadvantage of course is that if you swap SD cards then you can't run applications until you put back in the card installed. I never have this problem as I have only 1gb card permanently in the system. I will shortly be upgrading to a 4gb card (as they are not around £100) which means this is less of a problem. Although note that in the current version of the xda exec's software the camera refuses to write to a 4gb card unless at least 2gb is full.
rgds
I too have a 1Gb card with a 4Gb on order. I'm not very bothered about the camera, but I have read about the 2Gb problem. Hopefully someone will fix this little bug, but until then I can save photos to main memory and then move them about
As a guide I install everything to a SD Card unless it's a today screen plugin or sync's in some way...
that's excatly my thought too - only things which have a today plugin go on the main memory; everything else to SD card - seems to work fine

8525 Internal Memory

in the 8525 there is about 48MB available for storage and 48MB available for running prgrams. ive been installing everything in the storage card, still somehow there is only 2MB of storage space left, ANY IDEA ???
doesn't make sense...is that 2mb left on the card? what rom are u using? and what setting do u see only 2mb out of 48mb space left?
Depends on what apps... Some STILL save on the Hermes despite you selecting memory card... You may have to manually move them over and create shortcuts using a file explorer...
Tomtom6 did this and I've had a couple of other apps do so too.
Cheers...
Have you cleared your browser cache? It can really eat up memory.
Here are some other things to look out:
- Unless you go to messaging, menu, options, storage, and check the use storage card to store attachments, all attachments will be saved on the phone memory.
- Relocate the browser cache to the storage card, using advanced configuration. If your rom doesn't include it, look in this forum for it.
- synchronized files on activesync are stored on the storage memory. Use 3rd party programs to synch them to the storage card (like Pocket Controller).

hermes storage problem

hi there guys
got an hermes 300 here... this is the problem:
when i got it i didnt had the storage card, the microSD card i got few days ago, a 2Gb Kingston... the card is well functioning and no problems...
before the card, everything was saved to main memory of ppc, aswell as MMS, camera pictures etc etc etc... now when i have storage card its same, dunno why? in camera settings i can switch only between main memory and network, no storage card shown... MMS is same, every copy is saved to main memory and it fulls it... nothing is saved to storage card... how to automatically switch all storage to storage card?
thx guys
Well where the apps store things is not automatic. In other words you need to go into an applications settings OR make changes to the Registry to set for example saving SMS or IE temp files from main to storage card.
Now the exact changes you need to make are already posted in this forum so searches should produce results. (if there is a particular setting you cannot find then ask again in this thread)
Now, a slightly different issue is where the camera stores photos:
Uunfortunately the camera is only capable of saving to one of two locations at any one time so:
If the view network folder is NOT enabled you will be offered:
"Main" or Storage card" and once set it will remember your choice and not ask again.
BUT with Network folder enabled and a storage card inserted you will:
be asked if you want to use "StorageCard" every time you start Camera, but in camera tools you will only be offered "Main" or "Network" even if you chose the card. It will not set to storage card even if you said you wanted this when camera started.
So, if you want to use main memory with a storage card inserted and don't want the silly question about using storage card each time, then you must disable the network folder. (Use Resco or Total Commander to do this - forget now if regular File Explorer does it)
Equally if you want to save to storage card you will also need "network" folder disabled otherwise it will save to Main memory even when you say yes to Storage Card on start up of the camera application.
The default setting for the Network folder is disabled, so if you are having problems it is likely to have been enabled by using the likes of Resco or Total Commander.
Cheers
Mike

Where is my memory?

After some MMS received my internal memory is slightly smaller.
I cannot trace those MMS logs I could easily delete on X1...
Today I wanted to try out Softmaker Word application
installed on memory card.
The app gave me the error saving file (no memory message!)
so I uninstalled this, removing also app files from memory card and internal.
However now my internal storage is over 3MB smaller.
How to get it back?
