I've been using PocketPC Phone Edition since the first XDA came out. Since then a lot of things has changed, devices gained more memory, became faster, smaller, adopted Bluetooth and WiFi. But one thing remain almost unchanged - phone dialer. It does serve the purpose, but a lot of things are missing and annoys avid cellphone user. You know what I am talking about
For me one of the biggest concern was absence of Calling Card support. I am communicating with our overseas officies couple of times a day on the regular basis and dialing all those numbers is really pain. So, while I was looking for calling card support add-on I came across this piece of software - MobiDial.
It's not a total phone dialer replacement, more like a shell for it. It does everyihng I want and excpect from a phone - calling card support, one hand operation, vibratouch, nice and clean interface.
Here how the main interface look like:
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
As you can see, all buttoms are big and nicely placed. Also, you can enable vibra option, so you can actually feel when buttom is pressed.
At the bottm you can see row of icons:
Settings, address book mode (see screenshot below), 4 strars represent speed dial windows where you can also assign pictures, and call log icon.
You can switch in between them by pressing jog left and right and scroll in address book mode by up and down.
As I've mentioned before, the biggest advantage for me is Calling Card support. Programm automaticaly dials International numbers without any users intervention. Actually, you can specify this in the settings: always use card, ask user and bever use it.
This is international call in progress:
Couple of things: current release version doesn't work correctly with Second Edition, but beta with SE support is available upon rewuest from developer. Also, first load takes about 5 sec, but then it pops up instantly, by the way, you can assign harware answer/hangup buttoms to MobiDial
You can try it for 14 days here:
http://www.mobidial.com/mD/
I've made a small video of using this software. DivX encoded, 950 KB.
Cheers

P.S. I've posted the same review on HW, I am using a different alias there
HI. I had same concern of yours for a while, and I got great help from your topic. However, I'm stil lmissing one feature: The caller groups, allowing you to assign a ringtone to every group or individual caller. Combined with the Sendrui pocketzenphone application, you might not even look at the screen to know when to answer whom. Any advice?
Thanks in advance, and hope I can be of any help one time.
It looks like a adverstisment more than a complain.

RingtoneX does this nicely. I have all my contacts filed under Categories in Outlook (like Family, Friends, VIP, Business, etc.). RingtoneX lets me assign ringtones to each individual or by category. It works perfectly. Since you can create any category name you want it makes it real easy. (Only thing I've noticed is it didn't like spaces in my category names like "Friends 1", so I changed my category name to Friends_1 and now it works great).
Anyways, it's only $7 for the software, and it works very well.

so I got my Jasjar and I'm pretty happy with it so far, however I keep looking at the Treo and wondering if it would be easier to check my mail and calendar with one hand instead of opening the Jasjar with two hands, waiting through the windows mobile slowdown, etc...
on a Treo you have the calendar button right on the face and you can navigate with the direction pad, etc...
the Jasjar it seems a little clumsy to me for this... any ex-Treo owners out there care to comment ?
Also, can we use the Jasjars direction pad for application shortcuts like that ? like press left for calendar, up for email, etc...
any thoughts and ideas ? thanks !
Bump...
is no one else concerned about this ?
Surprise me !
Don't know if buttonmax is compatible, but i think it's the only app that allows you to reconfigure the direction pad.
Re the calendar, just remap record key to calendar etc?
I use SmallMenuPlus, so can do pretty much everything one handed, although requires a couple of taps down to launch the app.

I'm using my ToggleStart and ToggleNew hacks (=ToggleToday) to remove the top and bottom bars and a custom colour theme using cetuner, then from top to bottom:
-PhoneAlarm (with a skin I made, here on the board somewhere)
-AlarmToday (I resource edited the dll to change its appearance, but it's not shown here)
-WeatherPanel
-VJTodaySpacer (unreleased spacer plugin, coming soon!)
-VJEphemeris
VJEphemeris is not tidied up yet: this is my old setup
VJEphemeris was written to replace VJAudioNotes(at the top), QOTD (in the middle) and claunch (at the bottom), so I didn't want it to take more space. Eventually it will take the whole screen and be spread out more.
Quoting from here
I've posted a little elsewhere about my plugin, VJEphemeris, which is a long term work in progress.
Thus far it contains an analog clock, date with popup calendar, alarm clock setting and notification (cus you don't bloody know when it's set and on!), Quote of the day, autosizing according to length, missed call notification, last sms details, temperature, volume control, battery status, current phone operator (for dual sims), multi-bank launcher facility and theft protection (detects if user is using a non authorised SIM, and then sms's me with the phone number (and shortly, cellid), permitting me to sms it back causing it to format the sd, optional hard reset and I'm considering optional bricking - thanks Olipro).
That's the basic version I use currently. I've got tonnes to add when I finish a bit more stuff for release for you lot!
VJEphemeris is a continuous test bed of ideas I'm trying to implement. It's unlikely to be released, or at least as is. It's currently entirely customised around my use (although it's all too damn skinnable: I haven't gone into designing a UI yet, I'm just making it easy to use one thumbed! Try cutting out the screenshot and see how you thumb rests naturally on the important stuff. I'm trying to make it nicely ergonomic).

francorg: I released a prerelease of VJAudioNotes to a few people, but it's been replaced by VJEphemeris. I'm not really releasing either for quite a while (if ever!). Too much to add to it to finish it right now, it's a continuous Work In Progress.

I'm totally agree with you, I use Pointui and all the interface is made for finger navigation, but when there's an incoming call it looks ugly like you said, it doesn't fit with Pointui. Surprising that nobody thought about It.
Use S2U2
doesn't work ... already posted in the thread...
I would also really like to be able to change the incoming call notification. A big nice answer / reject screen that covers the whole of the screen would have been really nice.
When you think about it - it's quite a basic skinning request.
Then again - [email protected]#$soft is real rubbish and they can miss the most obvious things in everything they do.
no one skins that because everone uses s2u2 !

that is a good concept, can any developer design that caller notification for qvga devices????
Is there a solution that doesn't require me to change anything else, only the incoming call screen?
S2U2 is nice, but I don't want the app to be my main page, I don't need the lock feature, want to keep my device as it is, only have a nicer and bigger incoming call screen.
InesoftAddressBook: same problem. I don't want to change my contacts manager...
You can disable the Lock part of S2U2, and leave it as just a CID program...
i made this one for the inesoft caller id.
If anyone can work out how to disable the default CID screen, I can make a replacement. (In fact, I have a replacement, it just gets interupted...)

+1 With inesoft AdressBook, you'll change your incoming call interface.
Try it and you'll keep it.
Inesoft Address Book skins the dialer with an easy to use finger-friendly incoming call screen.
My current idea is a small piece of software that's memory resident, and pops up when it gets notified of an incoming call.
Using the .NET CF, that part's not hard, and the pick up/reject is easy to do via virtual keystrokes, but so far, I haven't found a way to stop WM showing it's own CID screen...
The main reason I have for this is for FSD (my dialer), but if it can be done, I'll release a stand alone CID program.

S2U2 will not be your main page. If you choose not to lock your device in S2U2 settings then only time you'll ever see it is when someone calls you.
Does anyone know of a grand central dialer program for windows mobile? The idea being that if you place voip calls from grand central, you can get free calls.
Let's say you have your mobile, a gizmo project account, and a grand central account. Placing outbound calls from your gizmo account (via a SIP application on your phone) will incur charges. However, if you add your gizmo account as a phone number on your grand central profile, and place a call from grand central, it makes outbound calls to both the number you are calling from, and once connected, to the number you're calling out to.
I hope that makes sense.
I have found such a thing for nokia phones here: http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18802
But couldn't come up with anything for windows mobile. Seems like it wouldn't be a difficult app to write, and could give us all free voip outbound calls.
I have also been looking like crazy for one, it's very annoying to keep going to M.grandcentral.com to dial anybody, even though I set it as my home page...
could somebody make a dialer for Windows mobile,, pleazzzee
I'm really really in need of one of these. Wish someone would release something!
Heck, I wish they would re-open the ability to import contacts. I am sure this wouldn't be hard to do, as all the information is right at their mobile page.

I wouldn't be so quick to judge. Although I was more excited about the iPhone than your average person, I still haven't found any reason to switch over.
Sure the iPhone does everything it does BETTER than Windows Mobile, but it just doesn't do as much stuff. Besides that, every 3g iPhone I've played with is less stable than my old Palm - and that's saying something. Windows Mobile wins in a few areas - namely versatility and stability.
Besides that, the 3g iPhone is a generation ahead of any windows mobile phone right now. We're just going to have to wait a year before we start seeing a real competitor. Windows Mobile 7, anyone?
That said - I'd like someone to create that EXACT app for windows mobile. I dialer that integrates contacts. Something I can map my phone button to.
PLEASE!
The PERl Script that Grand dialer is based on
Hopefully someone else (As I am not a app author yet) may be able to do something with this:
http://groups.google.com/group/grandcentral-help-poweruser/browse_thread/thread/977c8c295edcf2e1
This is the Perl App that the Grand dialer app is based on. basically it married a dialer interface with the mentioned perl script to make the connection to Grand central. I am still reading and trying to understand the script, however there are many here much better at this then I. Hopefully someone can take this info and run.

Interesting but doesn't seem to take advantage of finger scrolling. Promising though!
I´m testing it in a Mio A701 and works fast and fine. Really it seems very promising. I´ve done some actions (phone, sms, email) and i like me. I can access to all functions faster, quickly. Weekend of full test..
Good work!

I think this would be awesome with that slide keyboard method, know the one I'm talking about? where you just slide from 4 > 3 > 5 > 6 and it spits out 'hello'.

Oh, know I remember, it was that Swype keyboard from that T9 developper!
Welcome Addition.
Gave it a try tonight, makes calling and searching easier, still prefer PocketCM for smsing. Good addition to phone, will continue to use and try more of the features.
Thanks for posting.
With the dual language thing - I'd be very interested if it ever reaches the point of supporting Korean characters for input.
Finding a working Korean IME that doesn't **** the hardware keyboard on the dual seems impossible
this looks interesting, and very well thought-out, but maybe a bit overly complicated? the first screenshot seems like a bit much crammed into one screen to me...
great start though! This definitely seems like something I'd use in a later release
how do dial * and # ? i can't seem to find them on the dialpad?
Letters keybord > Long press on "Fast dial / *", it will also toggle the keybord to number.
This is a different concept
for managing your contacts and all contacts-related interaction.
All operations regarding contacts can be accessed via a single control panel: look up contacts, sms them, phone them, save to address book new contacts (as per reived calls), etc.
The app is highly configurable, takes virtually no memory, can be assigned to a soft key (that is what I've done) or set as a Start menu item.
The developer is possibly the most responsive I've met. Any issues are promptly resolved and incorporated into the next version.
This app has quickly evolved, from a highly functional initial version, to a VERY higly functional current version.
I like it!
I downloaded and installed o3touch on my E-TEN M700.
While running, the speaker makes some silent cracking sound after each second or two.
Having the large keys for input is nice, but need to wait for the third letter to be used is terrible and slows down writing. Using my hardware querty is much faster. You should implement T9-Feature instead!
The layout seems quite easy and efficient but the look ist not very nice. Seems as the app was written 10 years ago.
I would like to have avatars on contact list.

yes. No button mapping needed.. PTT button is a software button on program.
Likin it! Thanks Volt
I also can verify that it is working nicely, a few glitches to work out all in good time. I used HButton to remap the program so when minimized it comes up, then on my wizard I use the center on the d pad and hold while I talk then release. Just like nextel, bit slower but free, what can I say! You have to (sender and receiver) both be set up on the system to communicate but that doesn't take too long to get set up. Put the word out and we can all help work out the kinks so this system can run smoothly. Remeber before you lauch you must already be connected to the internet. Andason is also correct, if you leave it open then you would not have to do any mapping at all as the program uses the select button on your phone. If it is a different button on your phone it will not be difficult to find by trial and error. Remapping isn't that difficult and HButton is a free program, works great...................Later.
Hey Voltage?
Hey Voltage do you know how a person with a touch screen only (no hardware buttons) can utilize this great software. Is there an issue because of the lack of a default hardware button to access?
hey wanted to just re-post that the developers are watching

There is a new release of the program here, many bugs have been addressed.
