one handed usage ? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

so I got my Jasjar and I'm pretty happy with it so far, however I keep looking at the Treo and wondering if it would be easier to check my mail and calendar with one hand instead of opening the Jasjar with two hands, waiting through the windows mobile slowdown, etc...
on a Treo you have the calendar button right on the face and you can navigate with the direction pad, etc...
the Jasjar it seems a little clumsy to me for this... any ex-Treo owners out there care to comment ?
Also, can we use the Jasjars direction pad for application shortcuts like that ? like press left for calendar, up for email, etc...
any thoughts and ideas ? thanks !

Bump...
is no one else concerned about this ?
Surprise me !

Don't know if buttonmax is compatible, but i think it's the only app that allows you to reconfigure the direction pad.
Re the calendar, just remap record key to calendar etc?
I use SmallMenuPlus, so can do pretty much everything one handed, although requires a couple of taps down to launch the app.

What a busy today page! Any chance of a rundown of what you have running on there?

I'm using my ToggleStart and ToggleNew hacks (=ToggleToday) to remove the top and bottom bars and a custom colour theme using cetuner, then from top to bottom:
-PhoneAlarm (with a skin I made, here on the board somewhere)
-AlarmToday (I resource edited the dll to change its appearance, but it's not shown here)
-WeatherPanel
-VJTodaySpacer (unreleased spacer plugin, coming soon!)
-VJEphemeris
VJEphemeris is not tidied up yet: this is my old setup
VJEphemeris was written to replace VJAudioNotes(at the top), QOTD (in the middle) and claunch (at the bottom), so I didn't want it to take more space. Eventually it will take the whole screen and be spread out more.
Quoting from here
I've posted a little elsewhere about my plugin, VJEphemeris, which is a long term work in progress.
Thus far it contains an analog clock, date with popup calendar, alarm clock setting and notification (cus you don't bloody know when it's set and on!), Quote of the day, autosizing according to length, missed call notification, last sms details, temperature, volume control, battery status, current phone operator (for dual sims), multi-bank launcher facility and theft protection (detects if user is using a non authorised SIM, and then sms's me with the phone number (and shortly, cellid), permitting me to sms it back causing it to format the sd, optional hard reset and I'm considering optional bricking - thanks Olipro).
That's the basic version I use currently. I've got tonnes to add when I finish a bit more stuff for release for you lot!
VJEphemeris is a continuous test bed of ideas I'm trying to implement. It's unlikely to be released, or at least as is. It's currently entirely customised around my use (although it's all too damn skinnable: I haven't gone into designing a UI yet, I'm just making it easy to use one thumbed! Try cutting out the screenshot and see how you thumb rests naturally on the important stuff. I'm trying to make it nicely ergonomic).

francorg: I released a prerelease of VJAudioNotes to a few people, but it's been replaced by VJEphemeris. I'm not really releasing either for quite a while (if ever!). Too much to add to it to finish it right now, it's a continuous Work In Progress.

Sounds good, I'll take a look at some of those! Thankss!

A Decent Task ( as in Programs ) Manager ? Suggestions ?

Hi all,
Used to using my old Jornada and that had an easy way of finding current programs that where running and close one or all - the Wizzrds a pain for this as you have to go to the settings screen etc rather than the main menu..... any one got any suggestions of a good today plugin or other prog ?
Thanks in advance ( sorry I'm asking so many questions - hopfully I will be up to speed soon and help others out my self )

pocketplus has one with the enhanced "x" in the corner you can hold it down to see a list of progs running and chose to end any of them.
I use Magic Button 2 which has a very convenient Today button and it is configurable to show more or less icons. Works great!

XBAR2!!

Only 50 KB. It will not insinuate in the OS.
It is simple yet the depth of this soft is huge.
Task switcher, task killer, launcher you can manipulate it fully from Dpad thus it is well done for one handed operations. Just give it a try.
There is also GSP Pocket Magic
http://www.pocketpcfreeware.com/en/index.php?soft=1276
Both can work together very well as they do not try to interfere with the OS.
I don't use anymore pocket plus and wisbar advance. Too big, too complex (bugs), not fully compatible WM5/Wizard, too many slow downs.
Each time i have a problem I tend to think maybe it is because of wisbar or pocket plus.

GS Pocket Magic ++ is a great (and similar) alternative.

Is there a freeware out on a great rss reader which downloads pictures from rss urls?
http://www.kasuei.com/hitchhiker/ workin under WM5?
If you want a solution for closing programmes (including hidden ones if you want) thats not main page based, Binarys smart phone explorer works on WM5 devices, and has soem cool functions.
Its freeware, the URL is
http://www.binarys.com/download_en.asp
There is a new version for Xbar:
Xbar3
http://xetranet.free.fr/xbar2/?lang=eng&project=xBar 2
Of course it is not free but it is very cheap and it has some good new features:
- it supports mapping shortcuts to any key of the Wizard and that makes a lot...
- you can launch macros that are now emulating screen clicks.
Like if like me you want to quickly access the quick call list you just make a macro like this:
\Windows\cprog.lnk
xmacro=X200,Y200,D,U,
then I associated to the green key.
Therefore when I press action I call Xbar and when I click green key it lauches the macro and i go directly to my quick call list.
2 clicks.
One hand.
Possibilities are endless.
I got another idea.
I sync my XDA over Bluetooth. But if I don't switch BT off after synchronizing the battery empties too fast.
Maybe you could write a script that starts BT every hour or so, starts and connects ActiveSync, waits for the synchronisation and closes again. That would be really helpfull

Tastbar skinning

Does anyone know of a program that allows you to skin the Taskbar? I have tried using Wisbar, but it uses too much memory and bogs down my system.
It would be great if there was a quicker program that used less memory. And I don't care about the other features Wisbar has, I just want to skin the Taskbar and the Start menu button.
I guess not!

But it is the skinning that uses the memory and slows down the device.
None of the other features of Wisbar Advance 2 are memory-intensive at all.
Any application that skins your device will be a memory hog, period.
By taskbar, you mean the top bar right?
One kinda solution that isn't cpu intensive is to use my VJToggleToday II app (in alpha release right now though) to replace the start bar.

Dude, that looks ****ing sweet; I have been waiting with great anticipation for it ever since I first heard about it!
Is it skinnable?
VJToggleToday merely shifts the Today Screen, allowing you to show your today plugins through - so I'm using my PhoneAlarm skin at the top of the screen to adjunct the start bar.
I haven't worked on VJEphemeris or VJSihaya (the more 'evolved' version of the idea) for months - I wrote them both as a proof of concept idea, but since then I've decided to put off further development until I feel competent to tackle all of the things I want to put into it. Both are evidently (overly) skinnable.
I've been working on a new app for a while, it's completely innocent, just a simple text editor, but it's a testbed for features that I'm going to be using in my new apps (ie a new skinning engine and GUI). That's (realistically) coming soon.
V
vijay555... what other apps do you use on your today screen? The bottom half looks like you havea last call and last email displaying on your today, correct?
itesla: that's an old plugin I wrote once, but it's not been released yet. It's called VJEphemeris. I'm taking a break from it while I learn some new stuff, so that I can add the new features I want to it.
It does show missed calls and previews received SMSs etc. There are many hidden popup menus etc, but as I said, that'll all change in the final version, if and when I get around to finishing it!
V
Hey Vijay, I have been using your ToggleToday program in conjunction with PhoneAlarm. I really like it, but there are a couple things that I miss: the clock, and the OK button.
I was wondering, would it be possible for me to use one of those third-party button programs like MagicButton or vBar, and then move over the signal status?
For the clock, I wasn't sure if there was any possible solution, unless PhoneAlarm has a feature that allows you to display it.
I believe PhoneAlarm has a clock feature built in now, you can certainly edit the skin to include one.
I never use the ok button in the corner, I use VJOkButt 100% of the time, and that's compatible with 3rd party task managers that use the ok button.
I don't quite understand about "move over the signal status". How do you mean?
Something to consider, which I have't tried but should work, is to use a phonealarm skin with transparency - if you leave a gap in your phone alarm skin, where the original clock is - you might be able to allow the original "start bar" to shine through the gap...
But anyway, PhoneAlarm does have a clock feature, I believe.

LG Prada Flash

UPDATE:
No, this projects not dead, just been extremely busy with work.
All menu items will be configurable!
Links and images will be uploaded shortly.
A flash file made from LG prada screenshots.
The clock moves and most of the menu works. i Havent completed it yet, and there are not animations yet, please try it out and tell me what you think, some of the links may not work on your phone as i may have different file names, if you do i will be more than happy to change. so just test on your phone and see what works and what doesnt.
UPDATE:
New startup screen
contacts now had pocketcm and icontact as a option
IMAGES :
LINK : http://www.mediafire.com/?50dy57fnnt1
Please note, put the Prada folder in your root file, and link startup.swf to a button, or put in your startup folder.
Please give feedback.
Its a fun little toy but isn't really useful at the moment. Can't do a single thing with anything that uses a dial pad on screen and none of the ok buttons work for me.
yeah its just a concept, but would people actually use this if i had to develop it more, with the new flash just around the corner nothing would be impossible, but i want to know if people would use it, that is its basic purpose if people do like it i will further it and make it able to send sms, and make calls etc...
i'd use it
thank you
it s beautifull, thank you good job
Keep on going
Nice "flash lite" programme.
Is anything configurable?
Only 1.2% CPU Usage, the cube from ByKa takes up to 70% of CPU Usage and drains the battery.
Continue the good work
Prada Interface
Can,t wait to see the fnal product. I like the dark theme you have going for it. If I were you I would give it a flash and style animatable icons and movable icons. I see where you are going though...

Not sure if I'd use it much (iPhone gui makes things way to easy to access ) but I would use it to show it off. Seems simple enough for others to fully rely on fully and is graphically pleasing.
if it will work with a magician, i would use it! love the simple graphics...
Oh yes, if it really worked I would use it. It looks great, much better than iPhone wannabe skins. I have to admit I do currently use an iPhone skin because it's simply usefull. I like the Prada style much better though.
a counter for missed calls and sms would be cool! the first screen reminds me at this:

very nice work...keep it up
this program kicks ass. so much more of an experience rather than just a skinned launcher. keep it up. *subscribed*
ok so i have started developing more. If youve tried it you would of noticed that the signal bar and the battery meter show your phones status, ive done the calculator, the dial pad and almost finished the send messeage and mms. You can either use the given on screen keyboard or your own, will keep you guys updated. Thanks for the support
wow, sleek'n sexy(i mean screens on 1st page)...
joshuawittstock,
the interface looks great. is there a way we can change the destination of the menu items . . . such as, contacts opens icontact or pocketcm.
ok , well almost done i linked menu's to different apps, for e.g when you open phone book it will show you a menu asking whether you would like to use icontact, pocket cm etc... are there any special "requests"? ( things that you would like to see in this project? ) im also planning todo a rss reader. thanks
hm... it should work with wm2003... what about a button for backlight? or some space for a weather plugin on the today screen?
can´t wait to try it!
dial pad
are you going to create a flash dial pad or are you going to link it to cprog? i can't wait for the final product.
extraducksauce, i am going to create a dialpad in flash identical to the one found on the LG prada. im also going to be release 'test' models to see how it works on everyones phone, i would like somebody with wm 2003 please try the first link out and tell me if it works... im having a bit of a problem with the writing a message. so i wont release that just yet.

EasySMS - new finger friendly SMS app

Hi All
Did a search of the forums and didn't see anyone post anything about this new SMS program, so thought I'd post it here as a FYI for everyone.
It's another replacement SMS program, but the difference is that this one actually looks very finger friendly.
Currently it's FREE to download because it's in Beta. Use the link to the company's website below to give it a whirl.
Haven't tried it myself yet, but will do so when I get home and sync it onto my X1! And no, I'm not affliated with them.
Features: (Copied and pasted from their website)
* Big (fully customizable) fonts for convenient reading in all circumstances
* Easy and comfortable single-handed text input without any need for the stylus
* Fully customizable automatic standard replies with one single on-screen button
* Snooze function to remind you again at a more convenient time
* standard SMS inbox/sent box still functional

Many thanks for the heads-up. This could be useful as I am struggling with the minute font of my current SMS application.
WB
Just installed and tested it. Like the look of the application; however the digits for input are still too small for finger or one handed use. Could not find a predictive text option which was a real pain.
Also wiped all my data out of my text inbox but left subfolders untouched. Have had to restore from a backup.
In summary a good start but a lot of functions to iron out yet in this beta.
WB
Tested it on my Niki.
Slow as hell, especially with hardware keyboard entry mode.
At this stage barely usable... I went back the default texting after few tries.
will try it and give a feedback later on...
Thanks for this!
I can report on my Universal works great!
Bug I found:Every time I open the app, keyboard is enabled, even if I deselect it. (ON my Uni I really dont need a virtual kb)
Gracias!

Really? I've got it installed and it hasn't touched my SMS messages at all. EasySMS doesn't actually even seem to read from the outlook sms database because I can't see any of mine when I use it.

Yeah I agree - conceptually it's great, but needs some work. I'll definitely keep an eye on this and post any updates as they come.
What annoys me most is that there doesn't seem to be a way to access the Contacts address book... I'll wait until they release a version that does. Either that or Inbox Central starts working in WVGA and can write sms
This app is now out of beta and is no longer free for download! Anyone tried it, and would like to share their experience???

[REQ] Notification Bar / Calendar Widget

Hello all
Just wanted to thank this community as a whole for all the great work they've done. I'm in love with my N1, rooted with CM and all the good stuff I found on this forum.
After tinkering around with my N1 for quite some time a potentially neat idea occurred to me (hope this is the right spot for it). I use my phone primarily for business use and general functionality. At the same time I tend to nitpick about ease-of-use, convenience and simplicity. My idea (alleging it doesn't already exist) is basically an advanced google calendar widget embedded into the notifications drop down. Obviously, this would turn primary use of the drop down into the said calender, but with the convenience to be able to pull it up in a second while allowing for more effective multi tasking.
I'm not a new to the developers world, but am as far as the Android OS goes. I was hoping a few experienced hands might see this as a nice little challenge. At the same time, for the willing, I would not mind at all attempting this challenge on my own (obviously with some much needed assistance ).
Sorry for the long post, and I look forward to hearing constructive feedback.
Thanks in advance!
Are you thinking more along the lines of something that lists upcoming events, or rather an actual calendar image? I'm not if the latter can be accomplished, but would definitely be willing to start working on something.
Hi!
Welcome to the forums!

If not, can you elaborate on what you mean by an 'embedded calendar widget' in the notifications window?
.
You could add a calendar shortcut to the dock using one of the new launchers...

That´s nice, thanx!
Thanks guy, I certainly appreciate all the responses and the warm welcome. Initially I wanted calender functionality inside the notifications drop down because it can be pulled up at anytime without having to switch to any other programs. Often times while writing emails I like to cross check my schedule mid proposal. Two applications/widgets I switch between are the "Pure Grid Calender" and the "Android Agenda Widget". I'm probably going too far here but this would be amazing: Upon touching the top bar initially, it switched to the notifications and the bar lowers a bit (all before actually sliding the menu down). If upon touching the bar, it slid down (that same amount) but with two options, one for notifications and one for calender. you could then slide your finger to the left or right to choose which drop down you want, and proceeded to slide it down and the chosen menu would then appear full screen.
This is probably impossible lol, i have a wild imagination. I can do a better mock-up after work with illustrations if indeed that was too wordy.

Ah I see. Unfortunately, I don't think it's possible to override/replace touching the status bar. You can put things in it, but having 'two' of them with left/right swipe I don't think is user-replaceable.
However, there ARE apps that let you put any shortcut you want in the Notifications Tray:
http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.miromind.bartenderlite/
http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.schwimmer.android.barcontrol/
I think your thinking of something along the lines of SBSettings for the iphone os?
@ paul Thank you for that information, if nothing else thats very useful.
@ zKilla: i am not familiar with iphone at all, i made the bold move to go straight into the world of android . But after doing some research that seems like it would be a great compromise.. only problem is if its even feasible to build into the N1
Also if any devs know where i could start poking my nose around, perhaps i figure this out on my own, lord knows itll take a few years tho ha
