A Decent Task ( as in Programs ) Manager ? Suggestions ? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Hi all,
Used to using my old Jornada and that had an easy way of finding current programs that where running and close one or all - the Wizzrds a pain for this as you have to go to the settings screen etc rather than the main menu..... any one got any suggestions of a good today plugin or other prog ?
Thanks in advance ( sorry I'm asking so many questions - hopfully I will be up to speed soon and help others out my self )

pocketplus has one with the enhanced "x" in the corner you can hold it down to see a list of progs running and chose to end any of them.

I use Magic Button 2 which has a very convenient Today button and it is configurable to show more or less icons. Works great!

XBAR2!!
http://xetranet.free.fr/xbar2/?lang=eng&project=xBar 2&page=Download
Only 50 KB. It will not insinuate in the OS.
It is simple yet the depth of this soft is huge.
Task switcher, task killer, launcher you can manipulate it fully from Dpad thus it is well done for one handed operations. Just give it a try.
There is also GSP Pocket Magic
http://www.pocketpcfreeware.com/en/index.php?soft=1276
Both can work together very well as they do not try to interfere with the OS.
I don't use anymore pocket plus and wisbar advance. Too big, too complex (bugs), not fully compatible WM5/Wizard, too many slow downs.
Each time i have a problem I tend to think maybe it is because of wisbar or pocket plus.

SmallMenu has a freeware version.
GS Pocket Magic ++ is a great (and similar) alternative.

Is there a freeware out on a great rss reader which downloads pictures from rss urls?

http://www.kasuei.com/hitchhiker/ workin under WM5?

If you want a solution for closing programmes (including hidden ones if you want) thats not main page based, Binarys smart phone explorer works on WM5 devices, and has soem cool functions.
Its freeware, the URL is
http://www.binarys.com/download_en.asp

There is a new version for Xbar:
Xbar3
http://xetranet.free.fr/xbar2/?lang=eng&project=xBar 2
Of course it is not free but it is very cheap and it has some good new features:
- it supports mapping shortcuts to any key of the Wizard and that makes a lot...
- you can launch macros that are now emulating screen clicks.
Like if like me you want to quickly access the quick call list you just make a macro like this:
\Windows\cprog.lnk
xmacro=X200,Y200,D,U,
then I associated to the green key.
Therefore when I press action I call Xbar and when I click green key it lauches the macro and i go directly to my quick call list.
2 clicks.
One hand.
Possibilities are endless.

I got another idea.
I sync my XDA over Bluetooth. But if I don't switch BT off after synchronizing the battery empties too fast.
Maybe you could write a script that starts BT every hour or so, starts and connects ActiveSync, waits for the synchronisation and closes again. That would be really helpfull

START MENU HACK IS IT POSSIBLE

Ok,
I am not sure if any of you have switched your devices from Portrait to Landscape recently, but give it a try and you will see how the Recent Programs are displayed in Portrait we all know they go under the user defined icons in the start menu, but in Landscape they are all listed at the top alot neater than making your start menu list go across the screen. I searched the registry yesterday trying to see if any values changed with no luck. So can one of you guys like Buzz or Mamiach or someone take a look into it???

I'm also desperately keen for a hack to fix this - it's very messy having the long list, and quite disorientating.
I put the whole registry into word and spent a fair bit of time seqarching for something that could have looked like a meaningful key - nada. It's probably hard coded
craigiecraigie4 - this is likely to be coded into the menu routine - when the list would create a menu > screen height, it reverts to the cuter menu.
I can't think of any way to hack into this without hacking the underlying routines. I doubt this is in the registry, but calculated dynamically.
Why not use smallmenu? it's better...
V
the ipaq 4155 I had used to do this stright out of the box, even without switching to Landscape.. that was windows Mobile 2003 (not SE).
It seems 2003 kept the most recently opened progs on the top hirizontally. 2003SE does this in the center of the start menu instead.
2003SE (on AximX50v)

I'll see what i can dig up.

Correction - it's MUCH better...
I am using WA with WAD, but I really like to limit my programs to necessity rather than GUI. I don't want to install to many programs on my PDA2K I like to keep it clean
alfredtv - if you're using wisbar, why do you need the startmenu at all?
SmallMenu is a fair alternative to wisbar if you only need what it offers.
I think the startmenu is near useless, and loathe it being there even when I don't need it. That's what prompted me to make my ToggleToday hacks
With SmallMenu correctly configured you shouldn't need the startmenu at all.
(note settings submenu, favorites submenu, special tools, custom icons on subfolders etc)
I took it to an extreme and made a toggle-able StartMenu, ToggleToday and new bar all in one:
However I've had a thought about a possible way to achieve the "mini-start menu". I might play around with an idea. No promises though, lots of other things to do.
V
I have read about your hacks on the other forums, and was thinking about trying them out.
Do they work with WM5 now??
I am using WA because their is no way to change the recent programs to a different location/remove them all together. I would not use them if there was a way to do this.
As I said before I prefer to not use additional programs, but at this point have no chioce. In WM5 M$ should really have thought about adding cascading menus to the Start button, that would have been great.
alfredtv - I haven't checked my hacks properly on WM5. The hiding the start bar bit does work for ToggleToday on WM5. It won't however hide the tray from the Today screen yet, because I don't have a WM5 device to test on.
If you're only using Wisbar as a startmenu replacement, give smallmenu a go. There is a free version. I've never had any problems with it.

one handed usage ?

so I got my Jasjar and I'm pretty happy with it so far, however I keep looking at the Treo and wondering if it would be easier to check my mail and calendar with one hand instead of opening the Jasjar with two hands, waiting through the windows mobile slowdown, etc...
on a Treo you have the calendar button right on the face and you can navigate with the direction pad, etc...
the Jasjar it seems a little clumsy to me for this... any ex-Treo owners out there care to comment ?
Also, can we use the Jasjars direction pad for application shortcuts like that ? like press left for calendar, up for email, etc...
any thoughts and ideas ? thanks !
Bump...
is no one else concerned about this ?
Surprise me !
Don't know if buttonmax is compatible, but i think it's the only app that allows you to reconfigure the direction pad.
Re the calendar, just remap record key to calendar etc?
I use SmallMenuPlus, so can do pretty much everything one handed, although requires a couple of taps down to launch the app.

For one handed use, I'm making my own plugin to make it more thumb friendly. It was designed for the Magician's form factor, the universal is a bit chunkier, but the idea still works well:

What a busy today page! Any chance of a rundown of what you have running on there?

I'm using my ToggleStart and ToggleNew hacks (=ToggleToday) to remove the top and bottom bars and a custom colour theme using cetuner, then from top to bottom:
-PhoneAlarm (with a skin I made, here on the board somewhere)
-AlarmToday (I resource edited the dll to change its appearance, but it's not shown here)
-WeatherPanel
-VJTodaySpacer (unreleased spacer plugin, coming soon!)
-VJEphemeris
VJEphemeris is not tidied up yet: this is my old setup
VJEphemeris was written to replace VJAudioNotes(at the top), QOTD (in the middle) and claunch (at the bottom), so I didn't want it to take more space. Eventually it will take the whole screen and be spread out more.
Quoting from here
I've posted a little elsewhere about my plugin, VJEphemeris, which is a long term work in progress.
Thus far it contains an analog clock, date with popup calendar, alarm clock setting and notification (cus you don't bloody know when it's set and on!), Quote of the day, autosizing according to length, missed call notification, last sms details, temperature, volume control, battery status, current phone operator (for dual sims), multi-bank launcher facility and theft protection (detects if user is using a non authorised SIM, and then sms's me with the phone number (and shortly, cellid), permitting me to sms it back causing it to format the sd, optional hard reset and I'm considering optional bricking - thanks Olipro).
That's the basic version I use currently. I've got tonnes to add when I finish a bit more stuff for release for you lot!
VJEphemeris is a continuous test bed of ideas I'm trying to implement. It's unlikely to be released, or at least as is. It's currently entirely customised around my use (although it's all too damn skinnable: I haven't gone into designing a UI yet, I'm just making it easy to use one thumbed! Try cutting out the screenshot and see how you thumb rests naturally on the important stuff. I'm trying to make it nicely ergonomic).

francorg: I released a prerelease of VJAudioNotes to a few people, but it's been replaced by VJEphemeris. I'm not really releasing either for quite a while (if ever!). Too much to add to it to finish it right now, it's a continuous Work In Progress.

Sounds good, I'll take a look at some of those! Thankss!

Tastbar skinning

Does anyone know of a program that allows you to skin the Taskbar? I have tried using Wisbar, but it uses too much memory and bogs down my system.
It would be great if there was a quicker program that used less memory. And I don't care about the other features Wisbar has, I just want to skin the Taskbar and the Start menu button.
I guess not!

But it is the skinning that uses the memory and slows down the device.
None of the other features of Wisbar Advance 2 are memory-intensive at all.
Any application that skins your device will be a memory hog, period.
By taskbar, you mean the top bar right?
One kinda solution that isn't cpu intensive is to use my VJToggleToday II app (in alpha release right now though) to replace the start bar.

Dude, that looks ****ing sweet; I have been waiting with great anticipation for it ever since I first heard about it!
Is it skinnable?
VJToggleToday merely shifts the Today Screen, allowing you to show your today plugins through - so I'm using my PhoneAlarm skin at the top of the screen to adjunct the start bar.
I haven't worked on VJEphemeris or VJSihaya (the more 'evolved' version of the idea) for months - I wrote them both as a proof of concept idea, but since then I've decided to put off further development until I feel competent to tackle all of the things I want to put into it. Both are evidently (overly) skinnable.
I've been working on a new app for a while, it's completely innocent, just a simple text editor, but it's a testbed for features that I'm going to be using in my new apps (ie a new skinning engine and GUI). That's (realistically) coming soon.
V
vijay555... what other apps do you use on your today screen? The bottom half looks like you havea last call and last email displaying on your today, correct?
itesla: that's an old plugin I wrote once, but it's not been released yet. It's called VJEphemeris. I'm taking a break from it while I learn some new stuff, so that I can add the new features I want to it.
It does show missed calls and previews received SMSs etc. There are many hidden popup menus etc, but as I said, that'll all change in the final version, if and when I get around to finishing it!
V
Hey Vijay, I have been using your ToggleToday program in conjunction with PhoneAlarm. I really like it, but there are a couple things that I miss: the clock, and the OK button.
I was wondering, would it be possible for me to use one of those third-party button programs like MagicButton or vBar, and then move over the signal status?
For the clock, I wasn't sure if there was any possible solution, unless PhoneAlarm has a feature that allows you to display it.
I believe PhoneAlarm has a clock feature built in now, you can certainly edit the skin to include one.
I never use the ok button in the corner, I use VJOkButt 100% of the time, and that's compatible with 3rd party task managers that use the ok button.
I don't quite understand about "move over the signal status". How do you mean?
Something to consider, which I have't tried but should work, is to use a phonealarm skin with transparency - if you leave a gap in your phone alarm skin, where the original clock is - you might be able to allow the original "start bar" to shine through the gap...
But anyway, PhoneAlarm does have a clock feature, I believe.

HP 614 Business Navigator my Italian video review

My Italian video review : http://it.youtube.com/watch?v=scOVnSQofmk
I'm really happy i've bought this PDA, it's the really All In One !!!!!
Sorry for whom doesn't understand my native language but i've done it
for italian Forums and i don't speak english as well
tip for the 600
hi grate video but I think you have missed the all point of the device by using icons touch etc
you have a sensor that can help you operate most of the device in one hand
as some may know i'm trying to make a group of tips for this device (something like I did with the 6900)
any way I will give you now one of my tips- a free app that some have seen on k-jam wm6 rom

download this freeware then extract the 3 files to a folder, copy to device (memory card ) and tap on the exe for installation, after doing so you can get anywhere on your device with the keyboard wheel
pressing the start button will let you use the app(launcher ) ,taping the start will let you use the os menu
by sliding your finger from center (key num 5) to the right (key num 6) will let you go foreword with the menus, sliding the finger to the left will get you back
if you have running apps that you want to close you will see them added to the launcher menu, and by sliding on them to the right (toward the X ) will close it or all
(you will see it best in action)
pressing the enter will get you into the running app
there is no best way to config your device so every thing is good, but you have a unique sensor so why not use it for a fully operation of the device by only one hand/finger
enjoy your device
ps - to exit the app go quickmenu/exit
Thanks for your suggests, as soon as possible i'll try your application

I'm sorry if I was misinterpreted (now when I read it looks bad , sorry )
same as you I'm not a native American.. ENG is not my strong field there for the mis….
spb shell ,htc-home…. apps are grate since they gather lots of functionalities and info for the user in a clear way for 2.8" screen and also it Is grate to show the guys at the near pub - moving icons like Iphone and not show them here " start/settings …."
the app I have pointed out is very light and can be add to your commonly used program
the thing with this program is that it helps you on your daily base use and emphasize the ipaq 600 uniqueness unlike touch app that are used on all ppc/pe and contribute to the user daily use at an equal way regardless of brand or abilities
It is like using the normal picture view of the device and not use the
"hp photosmart mobile" that has integrated functionality for zoom in zoom out and sliding a picture using the wheel sensor (and key num 5 sensor)
to cut things short try it, use it, but don't give up on having a flashy device with nice flying icons
this movie was not intended to demonstrate the interface but here … enjoy

[REQ]Virtual Hardware G buttons

I was thinking about, as the subject, to an app who allow to map the g-sensor as an hardware button.
In some games, for example, where you can assign an action to a button, would great to incline the diamond and assign the action you need (L,R, Up & Down)
I don't know about how work has to be done, but imagine isn't too easy.
the problem is that the Diamond only has one button for personalize: large press in call botton
but other option is use a sensible area of screen how the squares touch pad in notebooks
It would just be a matter of a background process watching the G-Sensor and sending keystrokes via the keybd_event function to the foreground window/focused control. Good idea, and would be pretty easy, but I'm too busy.
I hardly doubt, that you can play with such controller
Like, stressing phone, and screaming at it, as you cannot progress the game
The most suitable is the semi-transparent on-screen controller, like in NES emulator
But withvirtual pad you can't push "Up+A" (per exemple) because WM dont accept "Dual Touch"
Sorry 4 my English...
I think that the game is playable... just find a GOOD algorithm to balance the sensitivity (not too inclined for a direction) and the directions (up, up-right, right, etc)
This is the usually iphone example
BTW think how many game with the emulators and, why not, at the "never seen touchxperience rom"... sending keystrokes (up, down, left, right) in the today screen, album.... to the ACTIVE WINDOW

Ok I have began writing this application like an hour ago.
I will keep you updated as soon as I have something usable. (the program works already, but I have to create some windows so you can configure it)

Awesome, can't wait to try this out, thanks for taking this on.
WoW Great NEWS! but all those g-sens related apps can goes in conflict... make in mind to consider a function that auto-rotate the screen (and also the G-gestures)... two control panels like the "Brins0net ScreenRotator" to exclude the rotation of the screen & G-gestures, and the possibility to add windows in execution would be GREAT
...maybe now i'm asking too much BTW it will be THE ONLY NECESSARY G-app in background, for all diamond users.
(hemm should be considered also a screen lock, but is not too necessary)

Just wait a little, I'm almost done with first release
