one handed usage ?

so I got my Jasjar and I'm pretty happy with it so far, however I keep looking at the Treo and wondering if it would be easier to check my mail and calendar with one hand instead of opening the Jasjar with two hands, waiting through the windows mobile slowdown, etc...
on a Treo you have the calendar button right on the face and you can navigate with the direction pad, etc...
the Jasjar it seems a little clumsy to me for this... any ex-Treo owners out there care to comment ?
Also, can we use the Jasjars direction pad for application shortcuts like that ? like press left for calendar, up for email, etc...
any thoughts and ideas ? thanks !

Don't know if buttonmax is compatible, but i think it's the only app that allows you to reconfigure the direction pad.
Re the calendar, just remap record key to calendar etc?
I use SmallMenuPlus, so can do pretty much everything one handed, although requires a couple of taps down to launch the app.

For one handed use, I'm making my own plugin to make it more thumb friendly. It was designed for the Magician's form factor, the universal is a bit chunkier, but the idea still works well:

I'm using my ToggleStart and ToggleNew hacks (=ToggleToday) to remove the top and bottom bars and a custom colour theme using cetuner, then from top to bottom:
-PhoneAlarm (with a skin I made, here on the board somewhere)
-AlarmToday (I resource edited the dll to change its appearance, but it's not shown here)
-WeatherPanel
-VJTodaySpacer (unreleased spacer plugin, coming soon!)
-VJEphemeris
VJEphemeris is not tidied up yet: this is my old setup
VJEphemeris was written to replace VJAudioNotes(at the top), QOTD (in the middle) and claunch (at the bottom), so I didn't want it to take more space. Eventually it will take the whole screen and be spread out more.

It's currently entirely customised around my use (although it's all too damn skinnable: I haven't gone into designing a UI yet, I'm just making it easy to use one thumbed! Try cutting out the screenshot and see how you thumb rests naturally on the important stuff. I'm trying to make it nicely ergonomic).

francorg: I released a prerelease of VJAudioNotes to a few people, but it's been replaced by VJEphemeris. I'm not really releasing either for quite a while (if ever!). Too much to add to it to finish it right now, it's a continuous Work In Progress.

New thought... making a flash phone UI

hey!
i thought of this after installing flash player on my asus p525 and found this menu working fine till u press on any icon. it is working fine but for SE phone system
can any flash pro edit it to manage to use it as a menu for our wm5\6 devices.
plus we can start a whole new project ...who needs a cube
i have like a 100 other menus and flash screens as well

this is the equalizer flash theme as found (or hidden in most cases) on Sonys W810i walkman phone. They support flash out of the box but most operators patched it out for some reason.
would be cool to have something like this for ppc

how about the cross bar menu system present on the new PS3 and the PSP..

SE and sony is now standardizing the menu system of their devices.. i read it somewhere that later upcommming devices will all sport this kind of UI in the future..

i think the ps3 'theme' is a bit simple and lame, remember its called "flash" not dull, im hopeing that who ever takes up the challenge on the flash UI front makes it drain my battery with animation - I want a slick MOFO of a program..

no i am not directly saying that we copy the ps3 menu.. i too beleive it is lame.. especially the icons and colors (and so does the touch's)..
but we can learn something from it.. maybe we could pattern something out of it.. given that it will be made under flash. the menu handling is good though.. ditch the animation..

I think it will be alot better without the equa animation, I think flash launcher will be great great idea, to save space in today screen and you just have to scroll one line icons.

no good.... its for changing icons
what we need is someone to find the commands for these buttons and change it to call PPC applications
its pretty easy when u find where is the commands actually
but this one is writting in a very complicated way i dont understand. it needs a pro to deal with it

Making a menu system or interface in flash isn't really the issue.
It's very simple to make something that looks cool and wizzy the problem is creating a flash interface that can communicate with the wm OS.
I've been looking into this but haven't found a way to create a plug-in for flash that sits on the home screen which can then pass parameter to the OS and for example open an application or start the phone.
These guys are getting close but even this is the result of creating a full screen application that sits on top of the existing OS

If anyone has the skills to create a today screen plug-in that can house a swf then the sky would be the limit as to what could be created.

I agree with this. I can create a flash interface but that wont help me because I don't know how to get it to communicate with WM6.

for a beta version we can create the swf and assign a softkey to it
as if its a menu

Not bad IMO - original concept/layout.

I'll tell you the easiest, and best way to customize this, would be the new WAD2. It's $10, you won't regret it, trust me.

Great design. I would use it, but the only issue I would have is the weather. I am in love with Rumball's weather icons so I like to use that in weatherpanel as my weather program.

Well, we could use whatever weather icons we want, I'd assume, right?

Try to use WAD2 it is quite easy to use..just load all your images and done

i personally dont use wad2 nor rltoday, due to personal prefrence..but if ur gonna do it, im pretty sure users will be all over it!

What are the cresents on either side of the clock?
I can do the majority of this using rltoday. Only things I wouldn't be able to do are:
-alarm notification. I know there's a way to do it using mortscript but I don't know the code.
-the battery indicator can be done using sys-2-reg. not hard but another program to install.
-the volume button would just link you to the volume control or maybe toggle between mute/loud?
-the signal and connection indicators I couldn't do.
-there's a weather mort script on the rltoday site that I could use.
-the hour and minute hands on the clock would just be straight lines. I could use PNG files but for some reason doing that sucks up a lot of memory.
What else? Just need graphics.
EDIT: I think I just figured out what the cresents are!!! If they're indicators for the battery, volume, etc. then this is way out of my league.

yes they are meters... it's sort of like a hud. well... is there any way around using wad or rl to program this... are there any crazy programmers on this board even capable of something, or this just too extreme. i can give you the graphics, just tell me the formats you need everything in.

If that's for me then the files would need to be in PNG format.
The "HUD" is a great idea but no way would I be able to do that. I'm sure someone else can....
Actaully, if you can find, or make a font file that has those shapes I think it can be done in rltoday. Would need sys-e-reg though.

It is on RC13...so free for now, with an expiration date. It will likely be 9.99 US when released, but not sure. It is one of the best, easiest shell replacements. Simple click>hold>select item to add. Click and drag items around the screen. Here is what mine looks like right now.

Here's an idea... when you turn your phone off, it locks... when you turn it on, you must roll your thumb/finger to the right around the wheel of the diamond to unlock it...
as you wheel around, the white line around the circle begins to fill from the top, moving rightward around...
sorry for the poor image quality, i just threw it together as a thought.
I hope a developer can throw this together, prolly isn't hard at all and would really be cool for the diamond. Better graphics and glowing line ofcourse.

Wish i could, but i have no idea where to start. i'm in the dark here.

to clear up any confusion that may come up, the lights on the wheel itself don't need to light up as you wheel around... only the circle on the screen.
as you would pass a point on the wheel, another section of the ring on the screen would fill in.

im sure that 'wheel-2-unlock' is one of the features of the TouchXperience ROM but it would take a long time for this rom to be released i guess.

i just DL'd that file on there and it wouldn't load on the phone... Prolly a difference in english device and whatever language that is device...
I'm not the primary developer cuz i don't know how to do so yet, but my boy on another forum is the one working on it... lets see what he comes up with.
i'll run it by him if he wants to talk to that R2U dev

I am working on such an idea already for a week or so:

It will have another locking/unlocking mechanism on top of StylusLock, as described in this post:

Because I am now on a business trip in America, I had not much time to work on the program. But I haven proven already that it works. I have to remove some stuff from the proven program, and integrate it with my already existing StylusLock. The goal is that it does NOT cost extra battery power and CPU and is really simple to use.
The reason to add this, is to have it possible to lock and unlock "one handed". The StylusLock approach cannot be done "one handed", e.g. on a bike. Also some people do not like to operate with the StylusLock. The combination with this new CapacitiveFingerLock and existing StylusLock will suit more people. And sometimes people will use the Stylus, so they will get the right behaviour depended on the usage.

Good idea, as I do not use any locks or such applications, but this one sounds nice. Just remember that this app should not conflict with, or somehow overcover and incomming call

Woohoo, I've been asking for such a thing for weeks now. Do you have a working version already?
That would be awesome.

Definitely MUCH MUCH better than SensorLock and all the - no need to mention - rest!
Especially because SensorLock is still buggy as hell!

Easy contacts access from 6.5 homescreen

I'm running 6.5 on my HD, and its very nice and quick, but what i really miss is quick acces to my favourite contacts. Manila is now too bloated and I dont like it at all, esp with all that green stuff going on
I've tried Appstar's favourite people plugin, but having to swipe my finger across the screen to search thru my favourites is a bit of a pain, what would be nice if there was a function to tap a favourites button and a screen would pop-up tiled with favourite people just to press one and open up their contact info/dial/sms/etc..
Anyone know of something to do that, or talented enough to make something.

i just use the smart dialing on the tachi dialer. Its quick and simple. Its not on the today screen but i can't think of anything else other than favourite people and as you say you dont like that.

At the moment I use the speed dial on the phone keypad, but thats just for calling. Just hoped there would be a something integrated into titanium, that brought up a page of tile pictures for your favourite contacts. click one then have the option of calling or texting them..
Any smart folks want to make such an addon?
Other than that, very happy with how titanium runs as standard

You could make one of your softkeys or CLauncher slots be iContact...

An idea would be to make a contact page like the beehive start menu that is in Titanium.
Maybe a shortcut from the Today screen will open the same hive layout with contact photos and name....?

Yeah I like the idea of having contacts/faves on a honeycomb page.

if you have a third party contacts program installed you can probably just make the soft key link directly to that by editing the registry. If you'd rather interact with the panels, you can edit the registry and change the program that launches when you click say the fave contacts panel.. I imagine the soft key way would be best.. that is one of the main reasons i dislike titanium, lots of eye candy but limited functionality.. if you could stick a grid in a panel to recognize multiple items, each launching their own link/contact it would be a great step forward.. perhaps that is not far off.

Just thought I'd update with a soulution I'm very happy with.
I installed 'icontacts' which is superb contacts program that does what I need.
