Test your GPRS/WAP Connection speed! - Networking

http://www.texan.net/speed.htm
Be sure to clear the cache after each use.
I'm getting at 58.3kbps which is 7.1 k on my first try using Cingular GPRS Unlimited.
Second try 51.6kbps 6.5kbytes
Third try 51kbps 6.3 kbytes
Which is correct if I compare it to my SPB GPRS Monitor.
Please don't go off topic and ask question on how to setup the GPRS. Search the forum!

Very high resusts :-/
Strange....
I do the test many times (cleaning cache between test)
I have 136kbps / 16,7 ko/s !!!! (max)
but the average is 102 kbps / 12,5 Ko/s
I'am in France with Orange - GPRS, I put classe 10 in GPRS option.
the result are very hight, but when i use PoketIE the surf seems to be very slow... I want to say that a nokia show html page faster than my QTeK.
Maybe i download quick but the ping is very very bad...
and you ?
Thanks garou

I already have GPRS set up for (only) T-zones for T-mobile US. It only registers 7.6kbps and .9 K bytes/s. How do I clear the cache??? Just refresh?

Hello,
To clear Pocket IE cache.
Open PocketIE
In bottom select "Tools" // "Options" // clic on "delete files" in the bottom part Temporary Internet Files.
You may delete the cookies too, go to "advanced" and clic on "clear cookies".
Good test !
Your result is very low ... be sure that you do nothing else during test (receiving or sending mail, mms, ...)
bye
Garou

Cingular GPRS results
slower than I was expecting: 58.3Kbps / 7.1 K bytes.

vodafone UK result
I just ran the test on Vodafone UK and got 81.6 Kbps (10 K bytes/sec).
But I am currently in a low signal area if that affects the results at all :?:

O2 UK
40.8Kb/sec or 5KB/sec
Typical O2 - slowest of the bunch!

Class 10 GPRS

500 K bytes/sec
I can't wait to have these speeds on my cell

Orange UK
29.1Kb/s
3.6KB/s
Class 8
It always annoys me when they advertise GPRS as fast as dial-up. My experience has been around 60% of the speed. Though I am surprised at some of the speeds others are getting.

Would anyone who has managed to get a HTC Touch HD phone be able to run a speed test and let me know what network, time and location the test was conducted?
www.dslreports.com/mspeed seems like a good place to start
Thanks in advance!

Just ran the test with a 1MB file.
Result was 775 kbit/s.
Network is O2 Germany.
Test was done inside a building, that might lower the transfer rate.
That site's not much use - I just got 500k on 3G, then 250k on wifi (on the 1mbyte test).
Testmyiphone 3Mbyte seems fairly consistent, about 1.25mbit, or 2mbit on wifi (lowest performance, best battery setting).
This is Orange btw, in a good signal area.
Orange france HSDPA : 390kbit/sec
Wifi : 1042kbit/sec
Using Opera
377kbit/s, T-Mobile, UK
874 kbit/sec

Not overly convinced about the speed test site...
runninga 1Mb file test over my wifi (10meg link) to get some benchmarks before trying 3G, I got
test 1: 'too fast - 2.8seconds'
test 2: 272 kbs, 0.195s latency, 30.151s download time
test 3: 261 kbs, 0.154s latency, 31.515s
test 4: 169 kbs, 0.147s latency, 48.552s
all tests run one after another, with only enough time inbetween for me to copy the results into this post.
the file transfer bar at the bottom?
jumps to 350kb ish instantly
600 / 700 in about 2 seconds
950 a few seconds later
950 - 1Mb takes the remaining 20odd seconds.
not convinced...
LOL.
Posted that, then thought - 1 more go...
test 5: 1156kbs, 0.176s latency, 7.259s
sorry, not going to bother trying over 3G
There was the same thread in the Diamond forum.
It turned out that it also depends on what browser you use.
I did my test with Opera. PIE seems to be slower, so if anyone of you ran the test with Internet Explorer, please re-run it with Opera.

Is anyone in Germany using a Fonic sim card with the Touch HD?

I was curious if the Fonic card in Germany (www.fonic.de) works well with the HD. I don't know how fast their internet speeds are. Their costs for Data transfer are the best I've seen so far (0.24 Euros per 1 MB according to their homepage). They charge per 100 KB (so 2.4 cents). Other carriers charge 6 cents for only 10 KB (that is about 25-times more expensive than fonic!)
I think it schould work well.
Fonic has the fastest internet connection in Germany.
It provides you 3.6 Mbit hsdpa, if there is t-mobile reception.
Otherwise you have normal hsdpa(384kbit) with o2 net.
one mb costs 24 cent but the timing is 100kb.
so you have to pay the whole 100kb you enterd.
i thought about changing my provider to fonic because of the hsdpa. but then i found blau.de. with blau.de 1mb also costs 24 cent but the timing is 10kb. but here it comes:
it offers you a 1gb datapack for 9.90€ per 30 days.
i am writing on my hd right now. the only problem is the crappy eplus-net quality and of course the lack of hsdpa.
i hope i could give you a little overwiew
ps: sorry for my english and ignoring lower and upper case, im writing on my touch hd.
Blau provides only Umts speed 384kbit because using the Eplus carrier. Simyo the same.
Fonic is ok, but they are on the O2 carrier and therefore no O2 means no HSDPA only GPRS. The daily flat 2,50€ is more interesting than the 100kb rates.
I change between Eplus and O2 because O2 is faster but only in the big cities, while Eplus Umts is to get on much more places. T1 cancelled the roaming contracts with O2, meaning a lot of holes in the O2 coverage.

Really? Fonic used the T-mobile reception? I though it only used o2.
But in general it's good to hear that it can provide a fast connection.
As far as charging me for every 100KB - yeah, that's not the best, but at 2,4 cents per 100KB it wouldn't bother me too much - especially if I get good speeds.
Oh - by the way - your English is pretty much perfect - so no worries there. Du hättest auch auf deutsch schreiben können, aber dann hätten die meisten hier kaum etwas verstanden.

Yes, that daily 2,50€ is more interesting than the 100KB rates. I assume that is on a "per-daily-use" basis. So I only pay for days that I go online. The thing is that I don't know how much traffic you use on a simple casual internet surf. Paying 2,50€ would be the same as about 10 MB of use at 2,4 cents per 100KB. So, can you easily surf 10 MB? I don't know. Maybe you guys have some input on that.
And here are a couple of questions.
Does the weather application on the HD use the internet to update itself? Does it do it automatically? How often does it do it? How much data does it transfer to do it?
Because if the weather app uses internet data transfer, then I assume that the moment it updates itself (every day) you would be charged the 2,50€ for the day (if you choose that plan instead of the normal 100KB rate).
Thank you BOTH so much for your input. It helps a lot to read what you have to say about this. My HD should be arriving this coming week.

You can control how the weather application updates. You can set it to manual, so you can control when it goes online, but standard is automatic, so beware the first time you switch to the weather tab, it will connect to the internet. And yes, it uses an internet connection, so you will be charged if you're not connected via ActiveSync or WLAN.
I found that the weather app does not transfer much data, just around 1-2 kb with each update depending on how many cities you have set up.

HSDPA/GPRS Internet Very Slow

Hi folks, I absolutely love my X1, and am still learning how to use it.
This is the first contract I have had, which has an internet package included, so for the first time, I am experiencing internet on my phone.
I am confused however, as I am sure I read somewhere that the X1 was capable of connection speeds of 7mb/s, whereas I am getting a performance more akin to 56kb/s dialup. Webpages often take 10-20 seconds to load.
I realise that the speed is probably dictated by the network (Vodafone UK in my case), but this is ridiculously slow. Is this normal, or can I tweak my settings in anyway to get something closer to a broadband experience on my phone?
Thanks
Gopes
are you using the pc or the xperia to load the websites? 10-20 sec are quite normal for a full webpage like cnet.de on the xperia. and the theorethical connection speed is 7.2 mbit/s not 7Mb/s!
Heh,
you'll never load a page on 2 seconds, if that's what you ask
"Loading speed" is not equal to "Download speed"
Yes HSDPA can go up to 7,200 kbps or even 14,400 kbps "download speeds"
But many factors have influence on "loading speed": your settings and software (browser, cache, processor speed, plugins...), phone (EDGE, 3g, HSDPA...) AND your provider/carrier's bandwith
If you want to test your REAL "download speed" there are some "download speed meter" web pages around
7,200 kbps is very thoerical. Your operator has the full cake and will never reveeal the real size of the cake (1000 kbps ??)
If every user in your area starts phone-browsing at the same time then your operator's cake will be sliced, thus giving a piece of the cake to everyone
Thanks for the responses. Seems like my phone's internet access speed is normal then
Oh well, I have a 1mbit connection on my pc - but my phone is no way near as quick to open pages as my pc. Maybe the next generation of phones will have a better internet capability.
Thanks

Exactly.
However, try also OperaMini, which with a fast connection is really quick.
As for OperaMobile 9.5, remember that your device with 528mHz processor and 120MB of free RAM has to load a page
which is normally operated by the computer which is few times stronger.
I've got a 1.8mbit site 300 metres up the road from me and surfing the web on HSDPA is super fast
Just waiting for Vodafone to upgrade it to a 7.2 (which most likely won't happen for many years).
urrghhh i know about vodafone speeds. Its nothing short of terrible on the X1 and not just cos of voda, its cos the radio is rubbish. I cant upgrade to diamond radio (device locked...) and so I can't ever get more than 2 bars on "H".
Can someone tell me if 3-4 bars with 3G icon is better/worse than 1-2 bars with the H icon?? I'm suspecting the former is faster.
In which case, can I set the phone to connect via 3G all the time and then ignore H connections??

EDGE < 3G < HSDPA (HSDPA is also called "3.5G" by someines)
EDGE MAX: 128 kbps
UMTS 3G MAX: 512 kbps
HSDPA MAX: 14,400 kbps
I managed to download a .net3.5 cab file (2.5mb) in under 5 seconds on my X1 over UK Vodafone HSDPA today

[Benchmark] How Fast is your wifi

Hallo Folks,
I think my WiFi-Connection on my brand new HTC Blackstone is very slow. But I had the same problem with my older tytn II.
I have to say, that I am rather hazy about the speed one can achieve...
Here you can get a 10/100/2000 MB testfile: http://www2.qsc.de/dltest/
So I will start and will update this list:
me: 533 kbps
bbonzz: 1750 kbps
Please say how fast you are connected with the internet, so we can except the internet connection.
p.s.: Sorry for my bad english!
tested two days ago with 1mb file -->1750 kbps
Can you tell me what channel you are using.. perhaps it has something to do with it. I use one (next used channel is 11) and alternative for testing 13, but its the same!
11. But i connect to a 20mbps lan, so maybe you have a slower connection hotspot
hmm... i have 16 mbit, so somehow something is wrong
could it have something to do with different radio or maybe i have a different network stack in my win mob 6.1 ?
Have you already enlarged the connection window via HDTweak and enabled WlanG? (last one i'm not sure makes any difference, but surely doesn't harm)
Yes - i have checked the first thing and applied the second thing u mentioned... no differenze
I now tried duttys latest rom... but still the same
The page you linked to redirects to the homepage.
I tested on www.ozspeedtest.com
On both the 600KB and 3MB files I got exactly:
1.63MBps
My internet speed is:
20Mbps

Touch HD as modem

Hi,
I´m using my Touch HD as modem for my laptop.
Normally, this region I´m living in, offers HSDPA (O2) but when I´m doing a speed test, I only get a download rate about 350kbps, this is not even UMTS-speed. The acces point is right. Is the modem of my HD so bad? Whats the problem?
Thanks,
Fl0w

Hi Fl0w
I realise you said your ap settings is correct, however you may want to double check that / see whether there are alternative ap's that also work, but work better.
I'm on Orange and had the same problem - approx. 300kbps as a modem but no higher. Called Orange support, guy directed me to remove the Orange WAP ap (default setting when you buy the phone) so it defaults to Orange Internet. Presto, jumps to a consistent 1.2Mbit.
Why they don't configure the phone with the right ap in the first instance I don't know... perhaps its an attempt to minimise network usage.
Also, are you getting 300 kbit/s or 300 kbyte/s ?
If you are getting 300 kbyte/s then that is very good for HSDPA.

I'm guessing it's 300Kb/s and not 300KB/s since that's 2400Kb/s which sounds too crazy for HSDPA. Not to mention that bandwidth is always measured in Kb/s while data is measured KB/s (aka if its moving data it's Kb/s and if it's sitting in memory it's KB/s).
but if it is 300KB/s then.... DAM I wants that!

It must be the setting as I also get 1.2M from a good HSDPA signal.
It´s kb, like I said. Not kB
