Unable to send/receive MMS messages... - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Hi all,
I have recently flashed my M1000 with the new ROM that is available from Orange which has the MMS application by ArcSoft. Look at this post for more relevant info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=10914
Someone sent me a couple of MMS messages the other day (my first MMS messages on this device - I RARELY ever use MMS) and this is where my problem started.
I have attached a couple of images to help explain the problem...
The picture below shows the settings of the MMS composer with no connections listed in the "Connect via" list
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
This piccy shows the list box expanded... Still showing nothing..
The image below shows that I do have a valid server for the composer to receive MMS messages from. The values in here have been confirmed by Ornage customer support as being correct.
Fnally, the image below was taken from Start->Settings->ConnectionsConnections->Advanced->Select Networks
As you can see, I definitely have several connecctions available including the MMS connection.
I have been in touch with Orange customer services and was escalated to their Level 2 support but the only thing they could suggest is re-flashing the ROM.
My device has been hard-booted a couple of times (due to some installed software and not my doing...) so I don't think re-flashing the ROM would make that much difference - although I could be very wrong about that!
Any help would be appreciated...

that's quite interesting! ... ROM flashing is not a bad idea as you have nothing to loose ... but I would advice you to start by changing the MMS Composer cab file in the extended ROM with a newer version ... I guess it's the problem of MMS composer not able to read properly from the registry data ... if the registry data itself is corrupted (valid if you can't use any other connectivity) then ROM flashing with a higher version is a must ... good luck.

Thanks Biso007 for the reply...
I've enabled the Extended Rom in my phone and tried running the MMS installer CAB file but this didn't help me at all.
Do you (or anyone else for that matter) know of anywhere that I can get a newer version of the MMS composer? The version I have installed currently is 1.6.0.14.
I suppose I could re-flash the ROM but at this point my phone is working nicely and would require yet another re-build... Something I'm getting quite adept at now, but still a pain!

Hi NinjaDonkey,
You should try to delete \My Documents\UAContents folder on your device...
Serge

Sadly, all this did was remove the messages that I want to receive and didn't force the app to re-load the Connect Via list.
Is it possible someone could post their registry tree for the MMS composer located at: HKLM\SOFTWARE\ArcSoft
Cheers

It's now fixed...
Did a full backup with Sprite, the machine hard-rebooted itself for some strange reason (saved me having to do it as I was going to do it anyhoo!), opened up the MMS Composer, looked at the Connect via option and it had a nice full list of connections.
I took the bull by the horns and restored my full backup (hoping the connections list would be intact in the composer), rebooted after the restore and all the connections were still in the drop down.
How strange....
Sprite is definitely my best friend
BTW, does anyone know what ActiveSync insists that my device and outlook aren't synchronised after a restore? Active sync asks me whether I want to combine or replace entries, I normally select combine but not too sure what the difference is...!

I have noticed this behaviour from ActiveSync before. It seems there must be some flag somewhere that tells AS a contact or calendar event is 'synched' and that doesn't get restored.
If you select combine, the PC and PDA get two of everything, if you sel;ect replace, then the entries are replaced, so you only get one of each.

Hi NinjaDonkey
I noticed in your screen shots that there is a bar along the very top of your display - is this battery level or something? What software do you use?
Thanks
Pope <><

It's a battery meter.
It comes as part of Pocket Plus 2.1

AAARRGHHH!
This problem has reared it's ugly head again.
My device hard-reset some time ago and at the time I thought I'd re-build it from scratch instead of restore from a backup...
Time went on and no-one had sent me any MMS messages...
Then my brother (well, his other half actually) had a baby and he tried sending me an MMS message. Lo and behold, the same problem occurred!
I've tried getting in touch with ArcSoft but I've not gotten anything back from them at all.
Can anyone help???

Not sure I can be of any help - but the I had the same problems you describe. I opened up the rom files from the orange rom and extracted the MMS cab file - I already had all the rest so didn't want to go through the pain of rom flash.
Once I had installed the cab it just wouldn't send mms messages - and for exactly the reason you describe - I couldn't get anything into the connect via box on the options.
Luckily for me it corrected itself - I haven't done any hard resets or anything, though I have done plenty of soft resets.
Anyway it works fine on my phone at the moment so if there is any settings etc. you want me to look at or post you I'd be happy to help.
Hope you get this sorted - its a real pain.
Cheers

I've tried all sorts of things to get it working... below should have worked surely but it didn't..
1) Do a full backup of my phone, then hard-reset myself. Grap a copy of the registry for MMS Composer in it's working state and a copy of it's installed directory.
2) Restore the previous backup, imported the registry I just made and then copy over the installed directory I made too.
3) It should work now as it should be "identical" to the freshly hard-reset state.
Waaaaaaa!
What's going on?!?!
Sooo frustrating. Even the bods at Orange Tech support (level 2 I think I got to in the end) didn't have a clue.

Hi,
I think this is related to the MMS Composer software version.
I've had the same problem with 2 devices both running version 2.0.0.13.
And no problems at all with 2 devices running 2.0.0.16.

How do you send a contact through SMS?

Tried to search for the answers to no avail. In the contacts page, you can beam a contact to another person through irda or through bt. But another way is to send it through SMS like what most mobile phones do. Can someone point me in the right direction?
It's not possible. Unless you're using a nifty PIM software. Just copy and paste it.
tetragrammaton's right. There is no built-in way to do this.
I think there's a utility that allows you to send vCards floating around on the internet somewhere, though.
Best way is to just go to your contact, select the number, copy, and then paste it into your sms. Most (not-so-smart) phones will recognize the number automatically.
Have anyone noticed that the Windows Mobile Phone Edition just 'swallows' certain types of smses?
Nokia Business Cards and Picture Messages never reach me, and I also never get any indication that the phone ever encoutered them, either.

Thanks. Already downloaded and installed vCard and I confirmed that on wmobile phones, the vcard is dropped, meaning they don't receive it. They probably need to also be configured w/ vCard.
I've installed vCard and I have to say that it's a fantastic application. Now I can send vCard from my Xda IIs to any mobile phone supporting it. I've tried sending vCard from mobile phone to my IIs. It works smoothly.

Have you tried doing this w/ nokia or sonyericsson phones? Does it work both ways?
So far I've tried it only with Nokia 7710, 6100 and 3120. I can send vCard to those phones, as well as receive vCard from them. For SonyEricsson, I haven't conducted a test yet. But I think it should be the same.
Forgot to mention that I can also send vCard using my IIs to my own number (my IIs acts as the sender and recipient at the same time).

Thanks for the feedback.
I tried it on SonyEricsson T610, the result is a bit dissappointing. Sony can received my vCard and display it correctly, but my IIs received vCard as a plain SMS (not in normal vCard format).
I sent a VCard to a Nokia 6600 and it worked just great. I haven't tried it in request but I am thinking the same will happen as seen on a SE.
I've confirmed it workes ok with Nokia phones. Too bad about the sonyericsson flaw.
Thanks for all your inputs guys. This thread will certainly be useful for those who want vcard sending through sms.
I'm having error using the vcard. "vCard can't be sent (WapSend)."
Someone please advice.
Thanks
Try to check if your messaging is defaulted to SMS and not MMS.

Agile Messenger WM5.0 Alpha Release --- Bug Checking Build

THIS IS A BUG CHECKING AND TESTING BUILD ONLY.
We are making this available to XDA-Developers board members, becasue of the large amount of requests that have been made to be involved with the pre-release testing.
We have one simple request, and if it works, we will continue to offer pre-release builds to the board members.
PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR FEEDBACK ON THIS BOARD, SEND IT TO [email protected].
This file is for Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC (so Universal, Wizzard, etc.) We will relase an Alpha for Smart Phones shortly.

woohoo downloading it now and testing it shortly.....will e-mail with bugs if i find em.....but hopefully some "windex' should kill it.......
*edit*
i've sent an e-mail
Hardware: T-Mobile MDA (US)
iMate 2.16 ROM
Connected via GPRS/EDGE
Bugs/Suggestions:
Google: "Fatal error! Received non jabber packet." this occurs when trying to sign on to Google from Agile. I've tried two differnet methods of typing the user name [email protected] as well as just username.
MSN: Can't use the tab key to go from user name to password field.
Yahoo: Can't use the tab key to go from user name to password field.
AOL: Can't use the tab key to go from user name to password field.
Also the splash screen at startup, should be changed to disappear if keypress/screentap.
And selecting a service seems a bit sluggish on the Wizard.
Not in e-mail:
I don't use ICQ or XMPP(???) so can't say much to that....
It's installed!!!
only using msn...
I miss one thing... backspace in an empty textfield (when a chat was open) used to close the open chat-window before ...that would be great to have in this version too
Excellent
Downloading now...

Hey guys...dont post the bugs here!! email them.
You CAN post here as well as to send a copy of the post to Agile via email...
Workin great
Actually it would be greatly appreciated if you just send your comments to [email protected].
If they are posted here the team that is working on this build will not get your comments.
Thank you,
Seth
i heard agile supports PTT (Push To Talk) is that true & how can we use it
I am sending the following to [email protected] but I want to post my comments here in case others see the same issues:
1. Can't use keyboard to tab between username/password fields on connect screen.
2. Successfully signed in with ICQ/AIM/MSN/Yahoo but can't get Gtalk to sign on.
3. When Agile is displayed in horizontal screen mode, some features are truncated. I will attach a screenshot to the email I send.

4. When in horizontal mode, can the text input box be shrunk to a single line? The message history window only displays 4 lines of text in horizontal and we really don't need two lines worth of input. I will attach a screenshot.
So far it's looking very good! Thanks so much for your efforts!

Not a bug....but I wish there was a vibrate Alert function instead of just sound. I will add this suggestion to any bug submissions. I just installed it so I will play with it for a bit before doing a bug submission.

Bugs.
1. Why after I used Agile Messenger WM5.0 Alpha Release and de-touch
GPRS, phone connecting to GPRS again? It annoying.
2. Cant connect via ActiveSync (USB), didn't try connection via
Bluetooth but think it will be same
3. After switching keyboard layout (dot button + Rus (.)) program start

4. than device lost connection to GPRS, program bar on Today is empty,

I agree. Also, when the phone is in sleep mode I do not get a sound alert. The screen does come alive and I see that I have a messege, but I have to start to respond to see what the message is. So if the phone is in my pocket when I recieve a message I will not know it and the screen will be activated. This could cause buttons to be pressed by accident.
Has anyone else had their groups mixed up? I have people that should be in a specific group, but now they have been put into a group called "Ungrouped Contacts" and I can not move them. Also, my contact list shows some contacts as online, when they are not. Anyone else have this same problem?

Below is the bug report that I submitted. I thought I would post here so that others could see if they are having the same problem and/or correct me on what I have listed.

Subject: Bug Report: Agile Messenger WM5.0 Alpha Release
Hello,
Below I have listed a few things I would consider to be bugs as well as a few items I think would be useful to add to the build. Please see the two sections below and let me know if you need more detail. Overall the product seems to be working very well, especially for an Alpha release. Great job, keep it up!!
Please note that I am using a Verizon Pocket PC phone model XV6700 running Windows Mobile 5.0. OS 5.1.1700, Build 14354.0.1.1 Also, I am only using the AOL service at this time.
Bugs (AOL only)
Can not use the tab key on the keyboard to move from field to field.
Some contacts have been moved from their specific groups into a group called "Ungrouped Contacts". These contacts can not be moved out of this group. When I attempt to move the contact I receive a message that says "Contact XXX does not exist"
When I expand a group the contacts appear above the group name, not under it. This happens to only one group.
A contact is shown as online when they are not signed on. I know they are not signed on because it is another screen name that I have been using to test the service.
When my phone is in sleep mode and I receive an IM message the audio alert does not play. The screen does become active but there is no sound.
Not sure this is a bug but, I can not register more then one screen name. How can I sign onto another screen name?
Wishlist
A vibrate alert would be very helpful
The ability to combine alerts, i.e. Audio Alert + Vibrate Alert, Audio Alert only, Vibrate only etc.
The ability to have an alert repeat for a specified amount of time. For example, play sound or vibrate until message is acknowledged or for a specified amount of time, 5,10 min etc.
The option to not activate the screen when a message is received and the phone is in sleep mode. This would be good if audio alerts worked when in sleep mode.
The ability to register multiple screen names for a service and then pick the one you want to use for your session.
Resizing
I've just installed on a 8125 ,seeems i have problem when the screen try to resize from preferences to the home page and landscape mode too
Please remember to send your comments to [email protected]; the developers and quality control are not monitoring this forum.
Also please make sure you SPECIFY THE DEVICE you are testing with in your feedback, so that they can quickly replicate, and solve the problems.
Much appreciated,
Seth

Send sms to multiple contacts.
How To:
- type your message on the first box. if you want the name of your contact to appear in your message, just type in @@@ where you want the name to appear inside the message.
- add contacts in your list: Menu > Add Contact
- save your list for future uses: Menu > Save List
- load your list: Menu > Load List
- sending sms: Send menu will show SIM1 and SIM2 because this application was written for ACER DX900 dual sim phone but using it on a single sim WM device will also work.
- after pressing send, the application will hide itself, and will reshow itself after the task is done.
change log:
v1.2
- character counter for sms body
- repeat sending to multiple contacts
oldSAP SMSer v1.2 cab
v1.1
- added ability to PASTE in textbox
- multiple lists
oldSAP SMSer v1.1 cab
A Cup of Coffee would be nice

Havent tryed it yet, but it looks pretty usefull.
One thing though: You do realize that the second phone number is still readable on your screenshot, right?

Your program is light, fast, does not send multiple text to the same person (like so many sms programs do)
I have three items on my wish list for future versions.
1) Enable the clipboard feature for copy/paste.
2) Have a Character counter
3) Be able to save/ load Multiple contact list.
PS. I am willing to donate to see this program improved.

handy, cheers.
oldsap,
Potentially highly useful.
However I think it lacks three options to make it the best SMS sending software available:
- Directly importing contact category(ies) such as GroupSMS.
- Automatically use the mobile phone number, no need to select a phone number for each contact.
- Being able to send SMS using the firstname only as sending an email to your friends with their lastname looks a bit too comemrcial oriented to me.
The_Steph
- Directly importing contact category(ies) such as GroupSMS.
- i didn't want to touch the contact details that's why i made a list
- Automatically use the mobile phone number, no need to select a phone number for each contact.
- some people, like me, save 2 or more mobile phone numbers for each contact that's why i added an option to be able to choose to which number you want to send the sms to
- Being able to send SMS using the firstname only as sending an email to your friends with their lastname looks a bit too comemrcial oriented to me.
- i can add that option
Very cool, thanks for sharing!

Hangouts

So... MMS is not working on Hangouts. The reason being is because it uses its own custom apns.xml, with bad info. I suppose this is in regards to them not wanting to release source code? Why it doesn't revert to stock apn is beyond me. Anyone able to shed more light on this?

Is this a common problem on stock ROM? Haven't heard this discussed yet...that's a bummer.
Common problem with any ROM, the app, and a mass of phones in general.
im also having the same issues, the come in as trying to download, but fails to download at all (no data is being sent or recived
And this is due to false and or failed apn. Hangouts resorts to its own instead of the phones. Edit in your actual APN values. I bet it will work. An alternate fix is to extract the apk, remove the apns.xml file, and repack. Thus making it resort to stock apns. Have fun. GL.
Unpacked com.google.android.talk-2.apk. Removed the apns.xml. Repacked and reinstalled. MMS working...

You can do it yourself without root if you download the apk. It does install deeper though.

Alright, so I tried to install this as an update to Hangouts after turning on Unknown Sources, it prompts to install and then says application not installed. Tried uninstalling current release of Hangouts downloaded/installed through Play store, rebooting, and installing the one you linked to again. This time it installed, then immediately crashed during setup.
Running on Sprint LG G2 (LG-LS980) Hardware Rev. 1, Android 4.2.2 Stock ROM un-rooted (so far )
Use this one. My apologies.

No apologies necessary my friend, on the contrary, thanks for trying to help me out here! That one installed no problem, and the first test I tried was downloading a previously received message that was "stuck". It still tried to download but never succeeded, just kept Retrying. I' waited for someone to send me a picture message to see if ones sent after the update was installed would work, but no joy. I then full uninstalled Hangouts, and used yours as a base install. This time it installed fine, but as soon as I clicked "Done", Hangouts crashed. Then every time I tried to launch hangouts, it would also crash.
Damn, that sucks. No clue why it would be crashing, pretty basic and only one file removed. Ben writhing perfect here. I am rooted though.
My problem is a little bit different.. I can send and receive MMS IF I enable the data plan. If data plan is disable..MMS cant send or receive anything.
Arent MMS supposed to connect to data automatically without us have to manually enable it (data)?
No. MMS use data. The carrier (if included in plan) negates it. It actually goes across the data network and does not auto switch. You won't get any MMS or standard internet services if in a non data zone unless on Wi-Fi or are using as app that supports MMS over a Wi-Fi connection. I was under the assumption that hangouts was supported, if sent to your actual hangouts id and not mobile number. The integration can be cumbersome to end users as it is not fully auto and can't really distinguish when you do or do not have a data or Wi-Fi connection. This is left to the user to distinguish. Best to let your contacts know to send MMS to your actual Google id. Just doesn't work that way. Why some prefer separate when not on MMS / data plans.

I could never get MMS to work in hangouts on the sprint lg g2... When I flashed to a custom ROM however, it worked flawlessly. Go figure.

I just tested this without enabling the data plan, and it works excellent. I'm having a d802.
Crap, was I drunk...lol. I have never really tested. I'm on Verizon, if I don't have some type of data enabled I will not get an MMS either way. 4G / data can be disabled, as long as I can get get a 3G for delivery.

[Q] No MMS After KitKat Update

Hello all! I'm having a problem I hope someone can help me with. I recently updated my Note 3 with the leaked KitKat build and while everything seems to be working fine, I have lost the ability to receive MMS picture messages. I can send them to anyone just fine, but have not been able to receive one since. My fiance has sent me several and I don't get the picture or any kind of notification of a new message. I've tried both the stock messaging app, and Handcent, no difference with either. Anyone out there have any suggestions? Thanks!
Try the Verizon messaging app from the play store. You can even access your messages from the Web and has a built in cloud backup.

I had the same problem of sorts. Not sure if you could but I was able to get the picture message just not download it. I found that if I turned WiFi off and just went off cellular network it would download then though, but not when connected to wifi. Hope that helps.
I had the problem of sending mms with WiFi on with my Note 2, but no problems with mms at all on the Note 3 until the KitKat update. Is there a setting someplace that I am missing? It's weird that everything worked before the update.
Hopeful Solution?
Alright, here's my story, after switching from Sense to CM11 when I first got my HTC One a few months ago things were working alright, then at some point I lost the ability to send or receive mms messages. I looked online and found that there were a few people with the same problem, most said the problem had to do with the apn settings, the solution to was either modified apn settings or using an alternate messaging program, such as 8sms.
Anyways, I tried several different apn setups to try and get my mms back, my LTE internet worked, but no mms. Eventually I found a setup that allowed me to send a mms to someone, but not receive one. I figured that was a good as I was going to get it.
After a few OTA nightly updates I decided to tinker with the apn settings again; my hope being that one of the new nightlies would have fixed the problem if I restored my apn settings to default. This didn't help and cost me the ability to even send mms. Needless to say I scoured the web to find usable apn settings again (I prefer to use the stock messaging app), eventually I ended up Frankensteining several together and found a solution that allowed for me to send and receive mms, as well as my LTE internet!
[TL/DR]
Found APN settings that enable sending and receiving mms, as well as LTE internet (with a lte subscription, it's not a hack or anything).

I know some people have connection problems including wifi, idk anything about that. This is just the set up I found that got mms sending and recieving working again.
EDIT
Get to 'APN Settings' by opening 'Voice Dialer' and saying clearly "Open APN", this will prompt you to open APN Settings, from there you can edit things.

Fore me it works fine, i can send mms with wifi + data on. Did you fallow the instructions when you did the KK update...my suggestion is try to send the mms just using data but turn your wifi off, also make sure the receiver has the cellular data on if you are sending it to phone.
Hope it helps
