Survey: Most common newbie mistakes - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Ill be receiving my very first XDA 2 tomorrow!! and EXCITED as I am, I am also APPREHENSIVE and SCARED  that I might do something wrong or perhaps do a mistake that may put me and my XDA in peril.
So with your help, Im asking all of you here at the forum to post whatever mistake you made or something that got you confused when you first got your XDA, like perhaps, :x I ERASED MY INBOX!! :x hehehe. and perhaps post the solution to any damage your mistake may have made. 8)
I and all newbie XDAers would greatly appreciate your post.
Thanks

Don't drop it... They don't like to be dropped.

i found that if you press the turn on button and it dont react right away
then wait a little while before pressing it again i find that pressing it more then once can confuse the device
i press it and if it dont turn on after 10sec then i try to softreset it

Don't do backup
There are a number of circumstances when the machine hard reset, and if you haven't backed up is payinfull...
Main circustances are:
-when you run out of power... always leave home with the extra battery!
-sometimes when you change the battery (the reason are debated, just be quick and carefull doing it)
-using a Wi-Fi card
-...
-...
-...

yeah once i ran out of power and believed that my device had frozen and i tried to hardreset it and nothing happent then i charges it and it somehow recalled that i had tried to hardreset it so when it got some power it hardreset and i had to wait untill i could get to my backup to get my stuff back

Biggest mistake for me would not be buying a aluminium case for it - they're a life saver. My xda 1 has survived being dropped on to concrete (x4), dropped whilst running on a treadmill (x1), flying off the back of said treadmill (x1) and being stamped on whilst on it's way off the treadmill (x1). Case is a bit warped but the XDA has not a mark on it!
So when i bought the XDA2 i ordered the case first!

people say that the alu case kill the signal somewhat thats why i ordered the armord plastic one

Good, now Im enjoying my XDA.
3 things i learned here:
1. NEVER EVER drop your XDA but you MAY with the an external CASING, NUTS! hehehe. NEVAH!
2. Like Windows Desktop, it may take some time to START, so WAIT.
3. It memorizes KEYSTROKES? so better WAIT again, before trying to do serious stuff.
4. BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP, is Xbackup similar to the one im familiar with - Mitac Phonebackup? Backups the Contacts right?
ANYMORE? like they say, A wise man learns from his mistake, a WISER man learns from the mistakes of others. THANKS!

sync with outlook so you have your stuff there if you have to sync later on to get your contacts and such back
also backup with activesync

I've got both the Aluminum case and one of those Silicon cases from Martin Fields (actually just came today)...
The only problem with the Aluminum is that you tend to drop them a lot more; they're too slippery.
If you're very careful with it, the Silicon should be able to protect your device. The top and bottom of the case is actually thicker for this reason.

Personally, i would say another material wouldn't of taken the punishment i mentioned I don't have too much problem with signal atm, although it wouldn't be difficult to add an external wrap-around aerial to the case i guess. Might look into this one.

not sure what you do with your xda but this if from their site
- shatterproof
- shock absorbent

Well as i said, dropped and stamped on it

you could put it to the test without having to pay for it or endanger your device
just jump a riotsquard copper and test it on his protection screen it's made from the same matrial

I had definite signal problems with the otherwise excellent Proporta Alluminium case (the phone feels better up against your ear with this case on), so much so that I had to ditch it eventually. The wraparound ext arial idea sounds a good one.
The main tip I would give is don't buy any accessories without checking on this or other forums, especially bluetooth devices as the bluetooth capabilities of the XDA2 are VERY limited. O2 have promised an update to the radio stack later in the year.

8525 Flex/Loose slider

Hi,
I know I'm a n00b, and I just got my 8525 a couple weeks ago. I've enjoyed getting Custel's ROM on my phone and finally finding some decent cases (hard rubber and krussel from extremepda.com) and screen protectors (pocketpctechs.com)
I do have a question though, how easy should the keyboard slide out? I noticed that mine comes out fairly easily with little effort. It doesn't come out with gravity alone, but little effort is required on my part at all. Is this normal, or should I try and exchange it at the cingular store before my 30 days expires?
If this is normal that cool, I just want to make sure nothing is wrong.
Thanks everyone!

It is a reasonably common problem. I would certainly go for an exchange if possible. There is a fix available but it involves dismantling and will void your warranty.
See my site in signature link for details, but go for the exchange. It should click into position fairly firmly at both top and bottom.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the quick reply! I guess my accompanying question is if this is a defect with certain units, or if it is just something that happens (ie mechanism just gets loose over time) if it just starts to happen and needs to be tweaked I'm ok with that, but if it is a defective unit and others don't have the issue at all then I'll take it back.
Thanks again!

Well if you see my site in my signature you'll see that it is a problem related to the indents at each end of the runners/sliders being too shallowly embossed in the metal to provide a large enough bump for the sliding part to click over. In theory they might become loose over time, but my feeling is that folks with problems have ones that have always been pretty loose. Having increased the indents mine have retained a very firm click ever since, so I don't think it's a problem of soft/poor quality metal. Mine were so bad that just holding the phone to take a call would open the keyboard and it always opened getting it out of the holster. Otherwise my TyTn was perfect so I chose to void the warranty and fix the problem myself.
Edit some are better than others from the start (to answer your question!!)
Mike
Thanks Mike! I ended up trying to take it back to Cingular, and tried some of the other ones and they were actually worse than mine. I'm probably just a little picky. If it gets real bad I'll definitely go through your guide!

8525 shuts itself off!

I have a 8525 that is 14 months old and has been working wonderfully all this time. A few days ago it started to shut itself off at no repeatable times. I pull it out and it is off! I try to load something and it shuts down instead. Today I did a total wipe and reinstalled from a back up. The same problem occurred. I wiped it again and installed a 2 month old backup and the same thing occurred. I have changed the battery. The memory is fine. The only thing that I have not tried is a wipe and a reinstall from scratch, but obviously would prefer not to do that.
WM 6.1 is running
Check to see if your battery connection isn't lose. If the power keeps shutting off for no reason in your pocket it could be that its not making proper connection. If you bought another battery that wasn't a HTC original then it may not be Quite the right size. I had this problem with an extended battery I bought. It was about 1/2mm less width than an original but that was enough to be a problem. A piece of paper between the battery and the casing fixed this.
Cheers...
not the problem
Thanks, but the battery is not the problem as the spare battery is one that I have been using for 6 months and the other one that I tried is the factory battery. Unfortunately, it is more serious than this.
I'm having similar problems with my Hermes...and I bought it ~14months ago too, refurbished, it's a Voda v1605, uk ebay seller.
Actually mine stays powered most of the time and it's not a SW problem: I'm trying various ROMs and I'm 100% sure the problem is HW-based.
Well it's much I have this prob and don't have any warranty, so I opened it and tried to "manually" solve this matter: I put a page between my qwerty and the motherboard, and this, together with some paper under the battery, solved the problem at most.
Now it switches off less frequently, but still not enough to safely bring it in my pocket and always find it switched on after taking it off
I tried to get it repaired but they told me they'd change the motherboard for +/- the price of a "as-new" 2nd hand one
I hope you solve, but if you don't....then I think we have to sell it "as-damaged" (or return it in warranty if you have)...I'm actually looking for a Diamond or TyTn II (see hard choice... thread ) and leave this dear mate
what i was afraid of
This is what I was afraid of. No warranty here so have been thinking of moving to the Tilt, but I am leaving town in a day and have no time to get and set it up.
Its also possible if you dropped your Hermes you may have cracked or bent the battery connectors.... May need to be fixed with soldering iron but is a pain if you can't solder really tiny joints...
Cheers...

I'm ready to go, I want my Hermes back
Can you point me to some photos to understand where to solder the connectors better?
I mean, I've already seen them (so many times hehe), I also have that cool yellow gauge that could be useful to understand if they don't "touch" correctly, but I'm not sure I understood where are the soldering points
A photo with some arrow could be useful (or something similar lol).
Many thanks for your help mate!

What a lovable guy! So available, so kind, cool!
Guys, just to let you all be near me...with my hearth that cries at every Hermes black screen...I've opened it again, did some tweaks - again - and did a complete photo-report and a short video too!
See here
http://s403.photobucket.com/albums/pp120/ErMejoo/My%20v1605%20opened/?albumview=slideshow and for the video choose "Main" on the top corner.
I'm looking forward to the next Mike answer (just sent him the link too) to see if he thinks detaching and soldering again the battery connectors can be the right next choice.
If someone has some ideas or if I have a great one (don't think so but the hope never fades away) or simply for kind words, let's write here.
Thanks to everyone giving support, I really appreciate.

Sorry was feeling a bit sick yesterday and didn't reply.
Having looked at the pics an video, I am begining to think one of two things:
1. There may be a crack in one of the battery connector soldered joints
Or
2. This has nothing to do with the battery connector and may have more to do with the general condition of the phone.
Number one could probably only be checked by re-soldering the contacts.
Number two is quite unspecific. You see when I look at the pics and see the gaps in the casing, and some damage to internal plastic, I get the feeling that the circuit boards etc are probably not be firmly held in place. In other words there is likely quite a bit of movement internally and between the two halves of the phone.
This in itself could cause the battery to move around. It could also cause the rigid flex cables to move at their connectors.
I think you need to check each and every connector is well inserted AND try to firm up all the looseness and movement internally and in the casing . I'm not sure that wlll be an easy job given some plastic parts appear broken.
I think it's going to be difficult to give further advice (not being able to see and feel the device directly.)
However, I'll have a look at my Hermes this weekend, and try to establish a link between pressing certain areas of the keyboard and a total shutdown.
Cheers
Mike
Thanks Mike, don't have to apologize, you're offering free help
Anyway, I have the WORST news for you....my Hermes has gone, completely.
After the mail I sent you the other day, don't know why really, perhaps for the spray, I don't know, it didn't switch on again.
When I connect the battery charger it comes red, and if I remember what I read somewhere here red means it doesn't feel the battery at all.
I tried to leave it outdoor these 2 days to see if magically that spray which left a film everywhere would have evaporated but this didn't help.
I'm having a very "rude" welder as I said, it has a cutting tip just to make you understand, anyway I've just toggled the battery conn with it (I had nothing to loose) and I have the 2 centered one which took away a dark "film", and on the motherboard I have the 2 silver connectors on each side, which touch 2-by-2, and the 2 centered one which are completely black...don't know if I damaged something that way...
I think tomorrow I could try to weld 4 wires (what are the centered one for?) and see what happens...what do you think?
I'd like to try everything to even explore the 0,01% possibilities to see it working again...
[EDIT 1]
Just updated my album on photobucket with the new photos...

Yes it means the battery is not charging - which suggests the connector is now disconnected even if it wasn't before.

Now!, I think something has happened to the translation here!! Does this welder (let's call him Fred) swear at you and call you rude names? And when you say you have had him!!!
Sorry - I have a weird sense of humour.
Anyway. To be honest, given the general condition of the phone and it's various problems - I think you should start looking for a new phone - you will never be able to rely on the one you have there.
You could also consider making a small amount of money ny selling off parts from the one you have. Folk here are always looking for difficult to find parts.
Sorry to be defeatist about the phone, but I think you realise that it's condition is getting worse not better. Assuming money is no problem then it's time to get yourself a present

Hahahahahahaha ops!! I Said I am an inventive Italian, didn't I?
I've just read some -better?- definition of the "noun" on dictionary.com (All rights reserved bla bla bla) and found:
–verb (used with object)
1.to unite or fuse (as pieces of metal) by hammering, compressing, or the like, esp. after rendering soft or pasty by heat, and sometimes with the addition of fusible material like or unlike the pieces to be united.
2.to bring into complete union, harmony, agreement, etc. –verb (used without object)
3.to undergo welding; be capable of being welded: a metal that welds easily.
–noun
4.a welded junction or joint.
5.the act of welding or the state of being welded.
And also:
Weld"er\, n. One(A PERSON??) who welds, or unites pieces of iron, etc., by welding.

Well I will, as soon as I can...currently I can't, that's why yesterday my father wanted to help buying 50% (200€) of a Nokia N95 8gb to let me use it and wait better prices for the HTCs out there...and take the Nokia for himself when I decide (what a profiteer haha!!)...BUT of course the shop finished them ([OT]there's a long story for N95s here, everyone wants it but noone gets! In short, my sister got a new bricked one (DOA) and is waiting for a replacement for 2 months; my dad bought one on ebay and got cheated for 270€...now I damage my phone and want to buy at the shop with him and it ends two days after we had seen it there...if this was a film I'd call it "Nokia N95-8gb: the nightmare"! A couple of points regarding your pictures. You know you can upload the pictures to photobucket and then using the direct link that photbucket gives you below the picture you can then post the picture on XDA-Dev. You use the little "insert image" icon when writing a post. As shown here:

I'm not sure what that black film on the central connectors is. Perhaps it's melted plastic from the connector housing. In any case you should be able to melt it off. (Be careful though because excess heat may be transferred into the board and start loosening other connections. The Hermes has a multilayered m/board and some connections are "sandwiched" between the layers).
I see the picture of the spray - I assume it is a metal polish? It may or may not conduct electricity - if it does that could cause serious problems even after it's cleaned off.
Mike
PS
By the way a welder can be a person who welds or a machine that welds. But you said that it was a rude welder. A machine cannot be rude, so a "rude welder" as you stated, must be a person!!
NB Welding is a term used for joining large pieces of metal. When talking about circuit boards we normally say soldering not welding.
My Italian lessons (thanks to Chiara from Tomtom) are coming along nicely:
Alla fine della strada, girate a sinistra.
(But I don't care I could listen to Chiara's voice all day long)

I didn't try to add all them here because, you know, photobucket slideshow is so sexy
Thanks for the lesson I needed, much appreciated
I just realized the "rude" adjective refers to a person, I used it because in Italian saying something/someone is "rude" or "rudimentale" means it/he is simple, old, rudimentary or primitive...and here we use it for both things and people...think you'd say unkind if it was a person.
Speaking of the Hermes, those 2 black ""connectors"" you see on the board in that photo have not something "more" comparing to the others, but something LESS! It's sort of scaring after having read about the layers, because under the gold connectors, after having removed them, I could detach just a sort of LAYER (that's what I meant with film), which btw didn't seem conducting side-by-side
Will update when I have some time to try the cables ""solution""!
p.s. You'd LOVE Selen's sexy sensual voice for TomTom I think...she's (was) an Italian pornostar still well known...See Wiki!!
Did you remove the traces? That's almost what the pics look like. By that I mean the gold under the solder.

[FUN] Elf in the refrigerator

Hi, I'm the proud owner of an ELF(in). I bought it on ebay very cheap because it was in bootloader mode. Thanks to the gold card method I've been using it with no problems at all.
Yesterday I bought another one (ELF), it hangs after 3-5 seconds of power on (bootloader, loading windows, etc). Sometimes the screen just shuts off, sometimes everyting becames green. So, I decided to put it in the refrigerator and see what happens. After 15 minutes I powered it up and it works! I take it out and hangs almost immediately. Is this just a faulty unit? No hope for it? (I don't want to carry my refrigerator everywhere).
If someone has any ideas, I'm listening.
Thanks!
hahaha, i love this post. sorry i'm not able to offer too much help but I had to comment. I know my parents used to freeze batteries to make em last longer. Tried a different one?
Well yeah, I tried soft reset, hard reset, the battery from my working Elfin, etc.
Try the microwave... for two minutes?
There already was a thread about this problem (maybe you bought it) and already then my answer was to take the device apart clean all the dust and dirt inside and give it another shot. I had a nokia with the same problem and when i opened it it was full with dust and fibres from my pants everytime whe put it in our pants there comes a bit of dirt in it and because of the rubbing it acumulates inside the device and it enters in protection-mode (nice word????) because of overheating ate least that was the explanation they gave me when i contacted nokia at the time.........You can't loose anything by trying

I already cleaned up, and still the same. It's clearly an overheating problem, it's been in the refrigerator for a couple of hours and works like a charm. Not very useful though as it's no longer a "portable device"!

Haha! Where were you man? I was going to throw an S.O.S. out to you last week for XIP porting help
But alas, you disappeared to Guantanamo Bay or somewhere
Is there not a small watch size battery in these devices - Perhaps it needs replacing?
See picture I included at the bottom of the device. I got this picture from the complete disasembly guide in the elf forum.
I knew about people who used the refrigerator to overclock their PCs, but this thing you're doing is amazing!

Just buy one of those mini refrigerators... carry it around on your back (along with a VERY long extension cord) and have your Elfin inside. When you need a snack or need to call, the fridge is always there!

I used a small box with ice when I connected it to the PC for rom updating, perhaps I should carry that box. I know it sounds bizarre but it works fine when refrigerated!

I disconnected that battery and it works just the same without it!
Any more ideas on how to fix this Elf?
try booting into windows and looking at the cpu speed, if it is normal lower it to the minimum and see if it hangs then.
eitherway, u must try reflashing everypiece of firmware, especially the radio firmware before giving up. (yeah, u might have to put ur laptop in the fridge with the phone )
Try lowering the clock speed with and Overclocking tool. Homescreen ++ gives u temp report. With that u can know if the temp is the real problem.
Liquid Nitrogen is the answer
Fix a fan on it
Haha, how about fixing a computer fan at the back of the pocket pc, it needs cooling.
Maybe the temperature sensor of the ppc has been spoilt, reporting the wrong data to the brain, thus the ppc restarts.
Ok, finally my Elf is working with no crashes at all outside the fridge! I found the solution in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=476152.
Thanks to Firestarter42 for the tip and okti for the mini-tutorial. I think that info should be in Elf's Wiki page.
However! I've got another problem... I've attached a screenshot. Any ideas?

I need your advice! :)

Dear almighty XDA members,
I had my Nexus One on the third day after it was released. It had the touchscreen problem (sometimes it was not accurate at all. when you touched "q", it gave you a "z" =.=;; ). and now I have sent it back for a refund. However, I REALLY,REALLY love this phone. Esp when I see that the Desire rom is coming to N1, and the Flash as well.
Therefore, I am thinking of ordering a new one. Before I hit the button, for those who have got their new nexus one recently, can you tell me if the touchscreen is behaving well of those from the NEW batch? Is it true that the new batch doesn't have this issue now?
I really want your advice. Thanks in advance.
I had the same problem the first few days that I had my phone. it took me over a few days to realize that the calibration problem you speak of was because the fat of my palm was (barely) touching the screen at some edge of the screen. I think its. because the phone is so thin.
My solution was to order a $10 soft-rubber case for the phone and 99% of the problem has gone away.
Give it another try, in my opinion...but careful, Google won't be too inclined to honor a second return.
@ralexand thanks for the rubber trick
If I finally hit the button, the first thing i will do is to give it rubber care

As my Father once said, "yeah, ya better put a rubber on... "
Yeah, I was playing a bejeweled knockoff today (forget the name,) but I would constantly wonder why the damn thing wouldn't register my taps, and then the search box came up. Fatty mc fat hands here was holding it wrong :-/. As long as you're aware that the soft buttons are a bit higher than they should be and you watch your palm, you'll be ok.

[GUIDE] Soft reset button tool mod

Several minutes of filing the strong steel of the back cover in a proper place will yield you a perfect push pin for that tiny soft reset button under the hood.
........
What? Compare yours with the image.
How to use it? Open the lid and use this nib on it to depress the reset button.
is there any mod that allow you to hardreset without braking your hd2 casing?
i use with otterbox defender, and hard reset is a really tiring process, i dont want to drill a hole in my otter and hd2 backcasing
any other workaround?
i meann softreset (the yellow/red button thingie)

Huh! So that button is known as soft reset? Hmm. Okay, will try to change my post. By the way, I have the same Otterbox. Thinking of drilling a tiny hole for that. Never heard of a 3 finger solution for that (Android have it).

Never had a dead freezing situation?
Or you know of a 3 finger method?
regarding the 3 finger salute, i ask the same thing just now in a new thread, hope there is any way for this
???
Sorry but I don't get the point...
There is an App which performs a Softreset directly from the screen, which works in 90% of the situations. For the remainder I just open the case and use either a paperclip or a toothpick. Even a pencil or ballpen would do.
So I dont see any reason to mutilate my precious HD2. If I'm in a situation, where I dont find any tool at all, then I assume that I will be in such trouble, that a frozen HD2 will be last problem to care about. (situations like being kidnapped by Hannibal Lecter....)
Hugo the JungleDyret
If the phone is very regularly freezing, then I would look at what is causing the freezing rather than damaging the phone.
Damaging? Mutilate? C'mon ppl you aren't that soft minded! HD2 is a tool not a fetish!
I'm experimenting with the new software and playing with my own code while on the train to work often. So yes, it's freezing a lot for me down to irresponsive hardware buttons. And I know, why and who is at fault, thank you. However, it's still no fun to juggle with the open phone, it's back lid and also with some virtually always available pen or paper clip.
The fact is: "There is no paper clip around when you need it most." (c) Murphy's law.
Ah I see youve change the title now from "hard" to "soft" that makes a bit more sense but still cant really see any point in this. Infact is bloody useless, why on earth any sane person would want to carve a hold into their HD2 casing instead of just removing back and replacing battery is beyond me.
There is no mention of a reset by battery removal method in the user's manual. And there is a reason for that. Any sane person knowing a little about computer electronics must consider it a dangerous approach.
flimsy battery pins are a pretty good reason not to pull the battery on a regular basis.....
its possible to fit half a cocktail stick inside the back cover, on the patch of foam that rests on the battery for a handy environmentally friendly reset solution.

You mean "hole"? That's a different topic actually. But I can answer: buy yourself an Otterbox defender - you'll understand.

lolwut...
I know nothing, my phone is stock, and the battery was popped out 5+ times a day until I added some XDA magic.
Apparently you burn a spliff (everyone in n.cal is baked amirite?) and then spend waaaaay too much time overthinking this whole thing.
There is NO way any sane (sober) person would intentionally corrupt the pure and mathematically correct lines of the HD2...even the extended battery makes me ill.
Compared to the new phones, the HD2 is by far still the sleekest of them all.
no offense but wtf?
P.S. and I do luves me some ganny heady nuggz yo!

Tried that, but the lid is so tight that when it pops open everything what's inside tends to fly away.

I don't quite understand your street slang, bro, but you sound like a "Generation P" kid (Phone Lickers). I'm tailoring tools to my needs, not licking them.
