I need your advice! :) - Nexus One General

Dear almighty XDA members,
I had my Nexus One on the third day after it was released. It had the touchscreen problem (sometimes it was not accurate at all. when you touched "q", it gave you a "z" =.=;; ). and now I have sent it back for a refund. However, I REALLY,REALLY love this phone. Esp when I see that the Desire rom is coming to N1, and the Flash as well.
Therefore, I am thinking of ordering a new one. Before I hit the button, for those who have got their new nexus one recently, can you tell me if the touchscreen is behaving well of those from the NEW batch? Is it true that the new batch doesn't have this issue now?
I really want your advice. Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem the first few days that I had my phone. it took me over a few days to realize that the calibration problem you speak of was because the fat of my palm was (barely) touching the screen at some edge of the screen. I think its. because the phone is so thin.
My solution was to order a $10 soft-rubber case for the phone and 99% of the problem has gone away.
Give it another try, in my opinion...but careful, Google won't be too inclined to honor a second return.

@ralexand thanks for the rubber trick
If I finally hit the button, the first thing i will do is to give it rubber care

As my Father once said, "yeah, ya better put a rubber on... "

Yeah, I was playing a bejeweled knockoff today (forget the name,) but I would constantly wonder why the damn thing wouldn't register my taps, and then the search box came up. Fatty mc fat hands here was holding it wrong :-/. As long as you're aware that the soft buttons are a bit higher than they should be and you watch your palm, you'll be ok.

CDMA Hero Bugs and Manufacturer Defects

I'm starting this thread as a central database for CDMA Hero owners to share defects and bugs in Hardware and Software.
My apologies if this has been addressed else-where.
Found with my Girlfriend's and my "with Google" Heros that we both have a noticeable amount of dust under the screen (glass). I thought this was addressed with rev. 2 of the phone?
Anyone one else with the same issue?
paint on case is VERY easy to chip...
I agree the finish seems a little delicate. I've been using a cheap hard plastic case since I got mine in dec. Helps alot with wear and tear, and isn't too bulky or hard to get out of my pocket.
i agree with the paint issue.
my end button is totally red not silver and red
I had a dust issue with my first (unbranded).
The first thing I did with my replacement (with google) hero was to apply an invisible shield to it. I have not noticed any dust under the screen whatsoever.
Also, although it isn't exactly pretty, I found while applying the invisible shield that it did not cover the gap between screen and button pad. As a quick fix to this I cut a thin piece of invisible shield material that was left over and applied it over the crack/screen protector/button pad protector. Just for some extra protection.
For shocks, I have the phone in the HTC silicone case. My phone has taken a number of falls/skids across the ground and stuff and this combo has protected it completely.
Edit:
Almost forgot, my original also seemed to develop a wear mark on the metal button pad finish. It was as if a part of the layer had rubbed off and tarnished in a circular pattern.
about the dust under the screen...
i contacted htc about before. the person who i emailed replied to me saying that htc has a permanent fix for the problem, so you can send it in and they'll replace/clean the screen and apply some fix to it. catch is, you have to pay for S&H and you'll go without a phone for a bit

I have a ridiculous amount of dust in the lower left hand corner of my screen... so much so that part of the screen isn't visible anymore. Do you think Sprint would just let me exchange it for a new one? Or would I still have to go through HTC?

well i e-mailed htc about this twice. the first time they said that if the dust got bad enough, i could send it to HTC and they'd repair it. they also said this:
I understand how frustrating it can be for dust to collect under the screen of your device. We have recently learned that Sprint has a process in place to resolve this issue. Please contact Sprint for the location of your nearest Sprint Service and Repair facility. They are equipped to clean your device, and in doing so will be able to keep the issue from recurring in the future. I apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced.

That's great to hear! Nice to know it's not like my Mogul was. They just kept giving me broken phones until I bought my hero....
I had heard about the dust problem before, and was glad that I didn't have that problem yet... After reading this thread, I decided to look again.... Now I do have dust in the bottom right
It seems to me that the problem is dust entering between the keypad and the screen, and then getting up underneath of the digitizer which doesn't seem to be against the LCD, which is strange, I think. Most handhelds I've taken apart have the digitizer glued around the edges directly to the LCD. Thank god that HTC and Sprint are actually addressing this problem. If someone does know how and where this seal is applied, I'd love to know. I might be taking mine back before too long, and I always would like to know what they're going to do beforehand.

Seriously you guys should have no problem exchanging that phone in warranty without TEP IF you take it to the shop and they cant resolve your dust issue they will ship you a remanufactured phone.

This is 100% inaccurate. I'm a Sprint tech and there is no process in place for repairing Hero's with dust in the screen. Sure I can take your phone apart and blow the dust out, but it will come back.

At least it isn't near as bad as the Touch Pro. My buddy and I both had one; he still has his... His volume buttons literally fell off, and all of the chrome stripping is held on with scotch tape. The sliding screen has a slight swivel to it. And, thanks to Microsoft, all of his texts are from 1016.
Actually, I'm considering taking my Hero apart and trying to figure out a fix on my own. I think I'll wait just a little longer... just to make sure nothing fails and I can't take it back. Or, is there anywhere I can buy those black stickers for the screw-heads?
I'm surprised none of you guys have seen this yet.

Interesting, I loved my Touch Pro, the only flaking or issues with the aesthetics I had were from where it met pavement once...there's also a .cab file your friend can download that will fix the date issue...I'd post a link but I'm not sure of XDA's linking policies to other sites, just google ".cab fix for touch pro sms date," it's one of the first results.
As far as bugs and manufacturer defects with my Hero go, I've had the phone for a little over a month now and haven't anything to report...it does lag a little at times but I've yet to find a rooting process that works for my Hero for whatever reason, it's the newest version with the "with Google" branding. The "one touch root" or whatever it was titled from unlockr didn't work, nor did the one I found on android forums.
I didn't get stuck in a bootloader or anything for either process, it's simply that neither one had any affect; I did follow both process to a "T." I'll get around to trying the tutorial I found on here (XDA) one day when I have time, although I must say, I kind of prefer the hacks and tricks of WinMo at this point.

How many people have problems with the back button

This is the only thing stopping me from getting this phone.. I'm trying to determine how wide spread the issue is. I figured a poll was the best way to see how wide spread the issue was, and whether its worth it to shop around to try and find a working phone
Mine seems to work fine Its not as sensitive as say my girlfriends Incredible buttons, the ones on the Epic seem to work more like physical buttons but they aren't. You have to use a little force for it to recognize and I actually prefer that because I always found myself coincidently hitting the buttons on my girlfriends Incredible when i didn't mean to/meant to press another button
It is really a non issue for me. Haven't noticed it.
I think if you used one of the defective phones, it would have been obvious.. All the other buttons worked without issue. The back button on the one I tried wouldn't register no matter how hard or how long you pressed it - some times. Some times it would register for a light little hit, other times I'd be pressing down pretty hard and nothing. By the second or third time, you'd feel the feedback buzz (which was pretty cool), and it would actually work..
It was sort of funny, the rep who was trying to sell me the phone started off to try and down play it and say "I'd just have to get used to it"... until I gave it to him. In the end, he agreed there was something wrong.
I didn't want to make the guy try other phones because I was planning on purchasing the phone from my business' phone retailer... It would have been sort of wrong to make the guy go through 3 phones and just leave if I found one that worked..
Not sure if it matters, but what state are you guys in? I'd imagine that similar batches ship to the same region.. I'm in LI, NY
Absolutely never had a problem with the backbutton.
All 4 of my capacative buttons work with light taps AND full presses.
Its hard to tell wherethe buttons are when the lights time out, and you have to hit the button in the right spot for it to register. My nexus was the same with its capacatives.
beamed from the stars on a Epic 4G
While I don't think there is an issue with the buttons persay. I was doing some testing and seems there might be some "lag" I was having this issue more with the home button at times. One time after i knew i clicked it i let is sit. took a few seconds but continued to do its thing... So maybe its the same with the back button as well. Next time after you click it once let is sit and see if it proceeds.. that way we know its a lag issue vs button issue. A lag issue would be easier to fix I would think.
First of all NeonMonster, thank you for being awesome with the Nexus One back in the day of rooting it and changing things! Haha.
Secondly,
I had a defective Epic 4G. The back button was the worst of the bunch. I would have to hit it 10-15 times to get it to work. But it wasn't the only faulty button. All of the capactive buttons seemed to falter just about anytime I went to use them.
I went to Sprint the next day and explained the problem and she said I was the first to bring it to their attention. But long story short, she exchanged it and the buttoms work perfectly. There aren't as sensitive as say the EVO or Incredible but they work as intended and the phone I once thought was hopeless and I hated, is now a phone I'm contemplating keeping.
So there are definitely defective devices out there but it is as simple as going in and getting a replacement.
Thanks for everything you guys do!
I picked my Epic on launch day and all was well..my brother on the other hand just got one this afternoon and after we got it activated i hvae noticed his has this same problem.

I didn't notice any lag... Again, I think if you have a defective phone, it would be obvious. A press just didn't register, even if you'd wait..
Yeah, there isn't a lag. It just straight up does not register any contact. You have a defective phone. I took mine back and got a new one and it works EXACTLY like it should. Night and Day!
Buttons work great.
I bought the cheap screen protecter at RS and had it put on in store, my button presses were instant. When I got home and decided I didn't like or really need the screen protector, I took it off and then my button presses didn't register as smoothly may be a quick fix for some that want to use a screen protector.

Aww from the nexus forum?? That was such a fun time! The nexus is truly a phone meant to be rooted. kinda miss that thing but the keyboard on the epic is too good.
But yes, there will always be phones that are defective and need to be replaced.
yeah i noticed some lag on mine. i also tripped out when then home and menu buttons were switched (compared to the evo) and kept pressing the wrong buttons.

That logic doesn't work.
1. Most people that don't have the problem won't vote.
2. Remove the people on the last option and it's 70/30 (at the time I write this).
You might be right with #1 (I don't know), but as for #2 it is 15-14 for people who are and aren't having some sort of problem with the back button (or other buttons)..
I do agree that this is far from scientific, as people who have never used the phone are likely to be voting..
Only read because I had the issue
Yep. I think you might just skip over this thread all together unless you've had the issue. Personally, I got one phone with the issue, exchanged it, and got another with the same problem - although not as bad as the first. However, I haven't returned the second one yet and the problem seems to have gone away. I'm not sure exactly how these buttons are engineered, but I'm wondering if more people with this problem will simply see it go away. FYI: the first phone I had was getting better but it started out as more of a 70% fail/only work with hard mashing.
My back button has a mind of its own :-( it presses itself when it wants to. Very annoying.

My first phone didn't have a working 4g radio. The second had this problem and it is very annoying if your used to a working button I returned it to radio shack. My third phone is perfect in every way.(hardware wise) this was all in the first week of the phone release. I would deffinetly go back and return it.

'Splodge' on screen

Splodge, was the only way I could describe it...take a look at the attached photo.
I'm certain I have seen someone else post this before.
It just happened randomly! Was fine all day yesterday, then picked my phone up to answer it last night, and after the phone call had ended I saw this on the screen...
Touch screen still works, and you can still see underneath it, its less visible when the back light is on. Of course when it's off, you can see the effect it has!
So...what is it? Easily fixed or what?
Like I said, I'm sure I have seen this posted by someone else before...
Hehe... nice one. It will most likely disappear if you gently pull the glass with a suction cup.
Brgds... /Tubgirl
Suction cup thing works but then it comes back.
HTC said it would be out of warrenty :S and they would have to look at it first.
O2 however, said if its in warrenty (which it is) then they will get it repaired and supply a courtesy handset while they have it.

interesting, well I'm taking it to the O2 store next week, so will see what they say, will keep the email i had off them saying they will as backup!
It has reduced in size, but still has the rainbow pattern in the middle.
I had a similar screen problem however it didnt look anywhere near as bad as yours. Mine had slight discolouration mostly noticable on white backgrounds. Pressing the screen a little bit harder than normal created the sort of effect you get when pressing the screen of a calculator (dont know what to call it) I took mine to the o2 shop with a different fault and also mentioned this fault. I got it back 6 days later but they hadnt fixed the screen problem. I sent it off again then and there and 6 days later i got a new phone.
O2 now have my HD2
Been given a nasty old Nokia phone as a temp...forgot how small some screens are...lol
should take 7-10 days they said...so fingers crossed...

Well anyway! For me it was very random. The phone was fine all day at work, I had a phone call in the evening, after the phone call I just looked at my phone, and there it was...
Some people have said its caused my the heat of the battery and signal, dunno.
Its a very thin space between the battery and the back of the screen, so maybe thats true.
I can't see how over pressure can cause it as its a glass screen, and glass doesn't bend like plastic.
I had a smaller of these newton rings at the center. Much smaller than yours.
Suddenly one day it disappeared.
It was during summer and I thought it was probably because of the heat.

Hope its fixed soon for you, its interesting about the battery and heat, my hd2 gets warm below the battery and that is also below the main area your problem is on, I suspect its down to a screen fault myself.

Ballad of the G2 ran over by a van...

As you can tell from my title, the face buttons on my g2 isn't working. Let me give you some back ground information about it. It is my sister's g2. She didn't have insurance on it for whatever reason, fell out of her pocket, and got ran over by a 15 passenger van. I took it apart, replaced the screen, and gave it back to her, with everything functional. Couple weeks later she apparently dropped it "just right" cause the screen stopped working again. (fyi, my sister is REALLY bad with electronics...) She decided she's going to get a mt4g so she gave the g2 to me. I replace the screen again, and do the spring mod for the hinge. Everything goes well, boot it up and such. But alas, the face keys don't work. Pulled the battery, did factory reset, neither of these worked. So does anyone have any ideas or clues on what to do?
Wow it got ran over by a van and your g2 is still some what intact? That's crazy... Well I bet you need to replace some components of the soft keys since they might be damaged

When I replaced the screen the first time after it got ran over, the soft keys still worked flawlessly. Was only after my sister dropped it and broke the screen again, that apparently they don't work.
That is insanity that this damn thing got run over by a van and somehow still manages to function. Go HTC your hardware is pretty fantastic despite its flaws.
you can use key tracker to see if the system is registering any kind of key press, and button remapper to reassign the functions you need to the volume up/down and camera buttons or trackpad center until you figure out something better.
Hope this helps.
Thanks ill dawg. The key tracker showed me that its not registering any thing from the home keys, as much as I suspected. I noticed at the bottomish of the screen there is a dead area on the touch screen, so the digitizer must of gotten ruined too, so I have to replace that next. The button remapper does provide an adequate work around for now though.
I think the regular phone speaker got messed up as well, though I'm not sure on that, could of been like that all along, but appears to be damage on the metal "screen" area that protects it, so I'll probably replace that too.
So, while I'm already that far into the phone again (hopefully for the last time), are there any other hardware tweaks I should do for my phone? I have already done the hinge spring mod.
FYI the van that ran over this phone is a 2009 Ford E series van with a large wheel chair lift in the back. The stock weight is almost 5000 pounds, no idea how much the lift adds to it, nor the people inside. So one can only imagine the forces put onto this phone, and the only thing that seemed to have broke was the screen/digitizer and speaker...damn I love htc

I bought it off of repairs universe, probably can be found cheaper but meh, was lazy. Screen costs 50, then 5 bucks for T5 Torx screwdriver, then 5 or so for shipping I believe. So your looking at 60 bucks, compared to the 120-160 it was for insurance to replace it(least thats what it cost me when i wrecked my g1). You also need a smallish phillips screwdriver as well, but I had a whole assortment of those already so no idea what it'll run you for that.
The digitizer runs for 65 bucks on repairuniverse, but found an amazon listing for 30 bucks, so figure I'll give that a try.
All said I'll be about 100 bucks into the phone. So cheaper than insurance, and also I feel now that if anything goes wrong with the hardware, I know the innards well enough that I can fix or replace just about anything.

According to source Repairs-Universe the screen and digitizer cost $49.99 and $64.99 respectively.
I suppose to answer your last question it would depend on how handy with a set of wrenches the end user is. I have no idea if "run over by a van" is a legitimate insurance claim, but I know that I would certainly love my phone a lot more if I ripped it apart and put a new screen in. Being able to tell some random bar-jack, "Why yes, my telephone did get run over by a van and all I had to do was replace the screen" is pretty good word of mouth advertising for HTC.

well final update. In total I replaced the lcd screen, touch screen, and ear piece speaker, and works 100% now. I did go ahead and do the spring mod and got the bigger capacity batteries from amazon. So yeah other than a few scuffs and such, it is impossible to tell that it was ran over by a 3 tonn vehicle.

Forgive me, but what are you even talking about? What is a feature?

Is it worth the risk ?

Hey guys...this is my first post in here, so please go easy on me. So, i have been in love with The nexus 7 since the day it was released. I have seen all kind of videos/reviews and thought that it is a perfect fit for me. But what i'm scared about is the durability of Nexus 7's screen. I have been hovering over Xda and specially in the Nexus 7 forum and found a lot of criticism regarding its screen cracks and poor build quality.
The thing is I live in Bangladesh, where i wont be able to enjoy any warranties or guarantees(actually I will get a one-day replacement warranty and that's it). Also, it is highly likely that i wont find the necessary equipment to fix it myself. I found only a single case cover for the Nexus which is the poetic brand slimline(Is that any good ? ). Nexus 7 16Gb version costs around $320 here
All this makes me doubt to purchase the awesome gadget and rather settle for the sub-standard Galaxy tab 2 7.0 3G which costs around the same.
But then again...i feel like I wont be able to happily enjoy any other set as i have been in love with Nexus 7 for the last 6 months. So, as u guys can seen that i'm real in pickle. So any advice will go a long way for me. Is Nexus 7 really worth the risk ?
Thanks.
Just don't drop it, any screen can crack that way. Also get a screen protector, the glass does scratch relatively easy.
Fun story. I got an 8gb nexus from the first batch that were made. But I don't currently live in the US, so I ran a huge gamble by ordering one and having my family send it out to me in Asia. Worked *perfectly* until I went back to the US for Thanksgiving. Then, somehow, I blew out the speaker. I was able to get in touch with Google and get it swapped out in under a week, returned to Asia with my new 8GB (no magic upgrade, drat) and we've been happy ever since.
I don't think it's really any risk. The majority who complain about the nexus are a minority of the owners.
Also keep in mind you will hear more horror stories from pissed off owners than stories of folks reporting zero issues

Aah how I wish I could have that opportunity of returning it, if any problem arises. Thank for sharing your story

Well that is true and reassuring.
I'd say go for it. As for screen cracking for "no reason", I always wonder just how much truth there is to those stories. I've been perfectly happy with my nexus 7, and it has none of the "so common" problems.

My friend got his 16gig N7 the day it came out and has had zero hardware issues with it. Gotta give credit to magiconthetire as well, he hit the nail on the head. When things go wrong it's the end of the world. But when things go right, you won't even know anything is happening at all.
Also I picked up the Poetic Slim case you mentioned and I really like it. The only draw back is how close the case comes to the bezel on the edges of the screen; if you have big hands or don't hit the bottom navigation bar or top notification bar at the right angle...the case sort of gets in the way. My solution to that is using a stylus for more accurate precision. The stylus also makes typing significantly easier, especially if you use gesture typing such as Swype, SwiftKey Flow, etc.
OP if you know someone you trust in Europe, USA, or even Australia. Get them to buy the tablet for you and ship it out to you. Even with shipping it will be a lot less than $320, if it breaks for something that is under warranty send it back to them and they can return it for repairs.
Cheers Danny

Sadly, not a single person is willing to take that minute hassle.

I've only had mine for a couple of weeks and so far no issues here. This is under pretty heavy use as well, as I take my Nexus 7 with me everywhere that I go. The case works really well though, it has a snug fit on the N7 so it doesn't move around inside of it at all, the smart cover that turns the screen on when you open the flap back has worked flawlessly, the hand strap for the back is really nice for using it in portrait mode while laying in bed or for just holding it up during prolonged periods, and the landscape stand is a little tricky to figure out at fist...but works just fine once you figure it out. I'd recommend some kind of sound toggle app for your notification bar as well, because the case does make it a bit of a pain to reach the physical buttons. But that's not really Poetic's fault, the way the buttons angle down with the curve of the backside of the tablet makes them kind of annoying for any case that doesn't have the same slope on it.
As far as stylus' go, I heard good things about this one and it was still fairly cheap...I just got it in the mail a couple of days ago but so far, so good:

The thing is i need to wait for 3-4 months to receive any accessories for the nexus 7. So, meanwhile i need to live with the poetic brand as its the only one around.

This is the case I purchased. Sounds about the same as the poetic, but also includes a good screen protector.

I have dropped mine a few times from different heights on different surfaces and its fine. But if you drop it right it will probably shatter, just get a case. Something like this if you are really clumsy.

Asus have international warranty for it.
Beamed from my Maguro.
If you ever want to buy a case throughout the internet I'd be more than happy to help a fellow owner out and re-ship to you!
I don't want to persuade you not to get one because I love the n7 and think everyone should have one, but i just broke my second one. My daughter dropped the first one and the corner of the screen shattered. I didn't have insurance because I've never dropped or lost a phone or laptop or anything, so it cost full price to replace it.
I had the second one in my back pocket, bent down, and screwed up the screen. My pants aren't tight but my butt put a little bit of leverage on the middle of the screen and broke it. When I turned it on later, the screen has a discolored line through it and a pattern of random lines on each side and no normal picture. The screen glass didn't crack, but the screen internals must have. I paid $50 for insurance so I hope it will be replaced with no hassle.
Long story short, I'll never use an n7 without a protective case again, and I've never used a case on any device.
Thanks a lot guys....I have taken all the advice into consideration and have found a satisfying solution. Gonna wait three months and buy through a friend in US.
Edit : How can I close the thread ?
