As a new O2 xda exec user, I thought I should play safe and upgrade to latest ROM etc on the O2 web site. After a couple of false starts and after checking the excellent wiki advice, I got the thing to run through and complete the upgrade.
But on doing the final hard reset, I find myself with a completely garbled screen instead of the O2 splash screen. After a couple of seconds the 3 lines of text appear on the screen (the R, G and D numbers) but against the background 'snow' I can't read them. No response to keyboard or to 'random' pressing the screen. The screen eventually turns off after a few minutes but when switched back on remains with the same garbled screen as before.
Tried going through the whole process again but sadly got the same result.
Tried going into bootloader and doing a soft reset (as advised one of the many upgrade problem threads I've checked) but that also took me to the same garbled screen.
Can anyone help me out with this? I can't find anything quite like this on the Wiki or in any recent threads.
Should I try an alternative ROM? Stupid question, but is a Jasjar ROM OK on an O2 exec?
Hi - just thought I'd save people any wasted effort. This problem is now sorted.
It seems the O2 web site had linked to an out of date ROM which I downloaded and installed in blissful ignorance. Went back to the web site and found the link is now updated and gives the correct ROM version. This loaded and started up with no problems.
In case anyone reads this - although I didn't get any direct responses from the community I would still like to say a big thanks cos the Wiki and the responses to other threads are a real help. You guys have put a lot of effort into this and created a resource which is invaluable.
Top bananas!
lol...well i guess me and u were in the same boat my dude...i def did exactly da same thing u did..jus a new user getting the update and fu**ed my ish up...thanx 4 posting this tho it was some help*goes to download new update*
I cant even sync with my pc anymore i dont know wat to do
I'm no expert - as the screw up above amply demonstrates - but the failure to sync was one of the rage inducing steps I went thru too. Sometimes the PC would recognise the xda but other times it wouldn't. In my case, it was sorted by reading in another part of the forum how to get into bootloader mode by pressing the light and on/off button at the same time as using the stylus to press the soft reset. This should take you into boot loader - an apparently dead screen but if you look closely you should see 'Serial' at the top and 'v0.xx' at the bottom.
If you reconnect by USB cable to your PC the 'Serial' should change to 'USB' and in my case I was able to run the software on my PC to update the ROM.
Sorry if I'm stating the obvious but hope this works for you. Otherwise check out the Wiki section (wiki.xda-developers.com) which has lots of good tips.
i fixed it i had jus installed a new rom
Im interested in upgrading my Orbit ROM as its a little slow. Having scoured through these forums Ive seen some reports of successful Artemis upgrading, and some unsuccessful Orbit reports. I just want to ask:
1) Firstly before thinking of flashing, can I backup my PPC (kinda like ghosting/imaging on a PC) incase something goes drastically wrong.
2) Has anyone got definate proof of an Orbit being flashed with a good ROM (with GPS / WiFi / most apps working)
3) If so, where would one obtain this ROM
4) (probably a question worth a hounding) Where might I find step by step instrustions on how to: a) backup my PPC fully for safety net
b) flash my ROM. including links to needed software
5) After flashing ROM, I take it no info (contacts, messages, programs, etc.) are stored on the PPC and will need to be painstakingly put back on ??
Many thanks, and my apologies if this has been asked a thousand times> I have sifted the forums but cnt seem to find definitive answers.
One last thing, I just got my Orbit few weeks ago and is my first PPC and being quite techy-minded, would like to learn more about the whole process so if anyone knows of any good guides/info with explainations of acronyms and what have ye,t'would be much appreciated.
First thing you could do is put a question mark after what is a question cause my heart just cant take the excitement.
O2 XDA Orbit and new ROMs?
Secondly this is such a hot topic there are lots of threads and the reason you can not find a definitive answer is because at the moment there is none.
so answers to your question
1 At the moment there is no way to make a backup of the ROM.
2 There are people who this has worked for but do you want to be in the percentage that has a bricked Orbit...... just wait for the new O2 ROM (ETA unknown)
3 There is a PDAMobiz rom that can install on a CID Locked phone floating around but I would not recommend it to you cause its more trouble then it is worth.
4 When its ready.... arvind09 says that they are going to have something really soon.... Look, nothing is going to make it so you dont have to check the forum everyday. Welcome to the club enjoy your stay (at least it is not the club with a bricked Orbit).
5 Use Activesync and Outlook to store your contacts and everything will be automated.
Check the Wiki for information about the whole PDA scene.
P.S. PDAs can be fun but please dont rush into upgrading your ROM on this baby unless you have CIDUnlocked it from (imei-check.co.uk) or unless you have £47 to get it repaired after you have bricked it.
BTW Welcome to the wonderful world of XDAs
Head on over to www.xda-orbit.com

I have fixed *all* my problems with the O2 Orbit just by installing Battery Status 1.04
Now I am not normally the kind of person who will just go and install some random free software from a site that barely even mentions the software, but this is great.
Before installing, I had these problems:
1. Quite often my phone would completely lock up when I got an incoming call, but the ringer would keep ringing and I'd have to take the battery out. This was rather embarassing after I'd previously told my friends about all the things the phone could do.
2. GPS took forever to get a fix - maybe up to 10 minutes. I would often arrive at my destination before the phone knew where I was. This was despite regularly updating QuickGPS
3. The phone would randomly lock up and/or stall for no apparent reason, and then catch up with itself after a couple of minutes and run all the things I'd launched because I pressed all the buttons while it was locked up.
4. I tried playing an mp3 once. It took about 45 seconds of stuttering and bad playback as if I was streaming a HD video on a 9600 baud modem. When it finally started playing smoothly, nothing else would work.
I had tried uninstalling the o2 software, and I run spb mobile shell and pocket plus but I'd tried removing them too but it was useless. What was really annoying was that I switched to an 18 month contract on o2 for this, but the phone ran more slowly and with more bugs than my old SPV m500!
This one little utility has fixed it all. Now I can use GPS while playing mp3 files and surfing the internet over wifi all at the same time as being on activesync. It's great. It's almost as though the phone is supposed to use the xscale function but o2 have disabled it...
Anyway, download the software from the link - no need to upgrade ROMs or anything. Just make sure you take a backup of your phone before you install it
Now to find a way to get it to default to letter recogniser after a soft reset. I'm sure I saw a post about this somewhere!

Hi, I have just received my new (to me) SPV M700 from a guy on the internet.
It was originally locked to Orange. Has been flashed a few times by previous owner and has Ausdim on it (don't know what I'm talking about as am new to this stuff). It's been unlocked and upgraded to WM6.1, also has Tom Tom and European maps.
I put my O2 sim in and turned it on. What I got was a white screen with the words HTC, also MO5, BO5, DO3 Ausdim, and a tune played, then windows 6.1 screen came up. That's it. Nothing else happens, phone doesn't work, in fact nothing works. Oh yes, a green light at the top right hand side flashes occasionally.
Also, l had three new styli shipped from Japan. Pushed the white end onto the pen and inserted it into it's appropriate place on phone. Came to get it out and the end has come off leaving the stylus in the holder inside the machine. Oh dear. Not my day is it.
Any advice would be appreciated.
I have experience of flashing psp's and using pandora batteries so the prospect of fiddling with flashing is not totally scarey to me. But I did get to know the machine first and read a lot before trying it. Don't want to rush into such stuff with this phone if there is a simpler solution.

Hi guys,
I realise I may have upset people by posting a question before I have contributed anything to the forum.
Will be happy to do so when I have the phone up and running.
Here's a quick introduction......... if that's the protocol.
Am a retired aged person who loves tinkering with new technology. Was first introduced to computers with the Sinclair ZX81 which had 1k of ram, yes 1k!
I even got a 16k rampak for the back. Such wonderful technology, I also had a fiddle with machine code programming.
Then I got a Commodore 64, more fun. Later on, I got a Psion, again more programming and compiling fun. Then laterley I have a couple of pc's and a laptop. Also got recently a psp and liked it so much that I bought another one with custom firmeware on it. Have had lots of fun upgrading and such.
Just got a garmin for the car too for when we go off to France for a few months with caravan.
Just a quick introduction as to who I am. Have had a look at some of the posts and I have lots to learn. Thanks for making it happen to a golden oldie.
Cheers

Hmmm....I feel for you. My Trinity has the original wm5 rom, when I boot it up it starts with the white HTC screen you described but then kicks into windows. I doesn't sound good!
As for contributing first...don't stress about it. We all have to start somewhere
Thanks for the reply, the chap who sold me the phone is going to ring me tomorrow to see if he can sort it out.
My sim is a non 3g, is it possible that this could be the problem?
If it's something so simple I should be lucky.
I was really excited about getting the phone - a bit of a bummer that it isn't working.
Cheers
Lyv
I don't think it is the sim! Does the device boot without the sim? If not then it something deeper!
No, it is exactly the same with no sim in. Oh dear.
Perhaps it can be remedied by re flashing ??? The guy who previously flashed it may have the solution.
Cheers

Before thinking about reflashing, try Hard Resetting. Be warned: you will lose all data on your phone! ...but it could be a solution for your problem.
Thanks for the advice, will speak to the guy I bought it off tomorrow evening and if we don't get anywhere consider the hard reboot. (under guidance).

Lyv
Sorry.
It was my phone you bought so hello again! It's very strange that it's not getting past the Windows 6.1 splash screen even without a SIM as it was booting fine when I sent it and if it isn't getting past their even with the SIM removed then it may be something more intrinsic although I don't know what.
Hard reset the phone by pressing and holding both the soft keys and then using the stylus to reset the phone and follow the prompts, it will erase TomTom but you have all the back ups to reinstall that and I'll ring you and talk you through the process.
If the hard reset doesn't work then I'll shove a Mini SD to SD card converter in the post to you and walk you through flashing a new ROM from the memory card and if that doesn't fix it then I'm stumped and I'll give you a refund, but I'm sure it won't come to that.
Sorry for all the hassle!
Mike
Or if you're still awake feel free to ring me (don't mind returning the call to save your phone bill) and I'll try and talk you through everything now as I'll be up for an hour or two yet, you should have my phone number in the PM I sent you on YD.
Thanks for the reply Mike, would have been tucked up in bed when you posted so will speak with you tonight. Give me a bell on my landline, notified on yd site pm. I could ask a silly question.......did you load WM6.1?
Cheers
Lyv
Oh dear, all our efforts failed Looks like it's dead. Could have been dropped in transit, thank goodness for insurance.
Will have to look for another phone now.

not even flashing the firmware again helped ?
Soft and hard resetting does nothing. I tried connecting the device up to my pc with the usb cable but xp didn't have the drivers so can't access via that method.
Thanks for the reply anyway.
Lyv
You need to download and install Active Sync (at least version 4) before Windows XP will recognise the phone.
Get it here
Thanks IK, will download and try again. I was on an older version of activesync from when I used to use the IPAQ.
Cheers
Lyv
Upgraded my activesync to 4.5 and connected trinity. xp detected that a usb device had been added and activesync attempted to connect. At the end it gave up with a message that the connection to the windows mobile device couldn't be made.
The device itself had the red light at the top to show that it was taking power from the usb and the wm6.1 splash screen is still showing.
No joy, must be dead.
Thanks for help
Lyv
I shall be writing a long, complaining letter to Royal Mail
From what the OP has said it sounds like the phone's reset button isn't working at all as she can't get the phone to enter bootloader or hard/soft reset the phone and the only way to power it down is to remove the battery so it sounds well and truly bricked.
I'll have a play when it gets sent back to me and may ask you guys for some help sorting it but I'm not hopeful.
Hi Mike,
Money arrived in Bank account. I've posted your phone etc back to you today, special delivery, so you should get it tomorrow or Saturday at the latest.
Hope you get some joy from PO.
Cheers

Still looking for a phone ...... ah hum, am even thinking of the mda vario II
Got a new phone on the way now - it's an xda trion. Yes, I know, not one of yours.
However, I'm sure I will get loads of fun out of it.
Over to the Hermes sub forum for me.

I read that there's lots of tweaks for WM5 for the 8525, but then I seen mention of a WM6 available, too. I presume it's a free upgrade on the AT&T website, or elsewhere online.
Now for the questions. Which OS works best for this device? Do the tweaks made for WM5 work with WM6 as well? Should I upgrade to WM6, or stay with WM5? For the GPS (maps), does it work with both or just one of the options?
Now for other (off-topic) experiences I have with my new [reconditioned] device.
a) After inserting my SIM card, about an half hour later, I attempted to call an 800 number (to activate a new bank debit card), which it didn't fully connect the call, although the call timer was running. It wouldn't let me end the attempted call, either, so I removed the battery and reinserted it.
b) Exploring the device further, I noticed that some menus didn't close when I tap the "red X" in the corner. I even tried to expand (pull out the keyboard on) the device, but it shows the "red X" of the location from portrait. as well as from the landscape! For example, it wouldn't close the "selecting which size to send photos" option screen. After waiting about a minute, I had to remove the battery to get rid of those screens, which is a major pain to keep removing the battery!
c) Later on, the last phone call that I made wouldn't hang up (end call) -- I even tapped 'End Call' about 5 times, not to mention pressed the red phone icon on the main navigation keys about 3 times. I haven't used the device since, except to place my old Samsung Sync's memory card with pictures, songs, and videos inside it.
The device seems very slow to close/end programs, and I've just received it yesterday! [I have not hacked, tweaked, or done anything else to it, either; I've only set the time, date, and owner's info.] Is this normal for the 8525? Would installing the WM5 tweaks [HTweakC 2.1b] -- or updating to WM6 -- increase the device's response time and overall performance? Or do I have a still faulty, reconditioned 8525?
Sorry for the long questions, I just wanted to give background into the device. Thanks in advance for all help in this matter!
You seem to be way behind as you use WM5. First thing you do after reading this: UPGRADE TO WM6.1
Most tweaks of WM5 will ofcourse work on WM6. WM6 is faster and much much better.
Do you know about soft-reset? No need to take out the battery! Just soft-reset.
And most of your problems of hang-ing can be solved by newer version of Windows Mobile! WM6.1
In case if your new to upgrading, you may read my small guide. If your completely new to Pocket PC, this might help you too. Also, consider using a free taskmanager such as wkTaskMan to close applications completely.
Regards,
Carty..
Carty, thanks for the quick reply!
As a brief background, for about the past 6 months, I was infatuated with the HTC Tilt [8925], because of the built-in GPS, Wi-Fi, 3-MP camera, & media player. Later, from reading other opinions on the 8525 on this board and discovering that it was compatible with GPS services, I decided to "sacrifice" the 3-MP camera, as the 8525 was about $100 cheaper on eBay.
I am pretty new to the Pocket PC, as my cellular device; I have used computers since 1996, though. That being said, it's not even been 24 hours since I've tinkered with the 8525 (as the eBay one never worked at all). I take it that the 8525 is an older device, as I've seen posts dating back to 2006. I just bought one on eBay 2 weeks ago, and had it replaced at an AT&T repair/replace shop yesterday.
I see the reset button on the bottom of the device; I just didn't know when to use it. I presumed it could only be used if the device wouldn't turn on at all. [As you can tell, I'm overly cautious with my new cellular equipment.] Also, I read about the "hard reset" -- holding down the 2 option buttons on the front and then the reset on the bottom of the device; however, I didn't know when to use the hard reset, either.
I will read your tutorials, then will install WM6 ASAP. Then, I will return with my findings. Wish me luck!!
Now I'm having issues with the update of WM6! The device stalls at 11%, then the software returns with the following:
"ERROR [262]: UPDATE ERROR
The ROM Update Utility has encountered communication errors during the update process. The program will guide you step-by-step to recover from the errors so you can continue with the update."
I tried the [Recovery] button 2 more times, following the screens to the letter, but with the same result . . . the software stalls at 11%.
Any ideas? This is very frustrating!!
Man, I finally got it to install WM6! I had to literally remove every single program that was running under my "name" with the XP-MC OS. I even had to "Ctrl+Alt+Delete" the Explorer program and then "open" it (via Task Manager) again! [I didn't restart Windows, though.]
So far, it's back to the align screen, so I'll hope all goes well from there! Be back with more later!
I've made one phone call so far, and it actually did the end call promptly! Thank goodness for small favors! I thought having to do the "flash" about 6 times would have fried the device!
Now that I have the WM6, how do I install the tweaks? Do I copy them to a memory card, to the cell ROM, or something else? I already downloaded "HTweakC 2.1b" but haven't done anything with it yet. What would be my next step to correctly hack the WM6 8525 that I have now? I am a novice at hacking, so talk in layman's terms and please bear with me!
I'm a senior on a music production forum, so I know how frustrating some of these questions can be, I did have a look in this subforum, but I am guessing it's one of those everyone knows kinda things... lol
So I am new to the world of windows mobile, and once I got past the first 2 days of wanting to feed the phone to my dog I love it!
The only thing I'm still not a fan of is active sync. The software on my DAW causes my audio workkstation to die... It literally stops me booting my audio software, so that had to go. So I connect to my phone with the USB Mass storage type settings and it's all gravy.
I am wanting to do a hard reset on my phone, I have been looking through the net and trying out different apps on my X1, and think I should prob hard reset b4 I settle on my final choices.
I would like firstly to be able to copy all of my contacts on to my memory card (and back up to PC) and secondly all my messages in their current (chat conversation) format.
So I can then do a hard reset, copy the contact and the txt messages back and be a happy chappy.
Some of you guys really really know your onions on here so again sorry if this is like asking how to turn the phone on (the odd shaped button on the top right).. haha
O
TheScientist
Hello Scientist,
Very wise. PPC PIM Back-up will sort you out.

ActiveSync does suck. I'm trying to avoid it. Problems can occur (more so than normal) due to firewalls and the 'advanced network' setting on your phone.
