Hi All,
For some time now, I've been using nPop (not bad) instead of pocket outlook on my xda ii, because when i try to asscess my POP3 account using outlook, I get an error message sying that it cannot access my messages as my server does not provide a unique identifier for each message.
However, I recently upgraded to the latest o2 rom, and on a whim tried it again. And hurrah - it worked!.... once....
Now I'm getting the same error again. But it worked once, so these unique identifiers must be out there somewhere, right?
No other version (express or standard PC) of outlook has any problem getting my messages.
Any idea what's going on with all this?
Thanks for any help....
Phil
nPop can check to see if you have any new messages without downloading them. In order to do so, it needs the pop server to list messages using a unique ID. Your POP server can't handle this.
Getting mail once probably worked because nPop didn't care about the unique IDs at that time, since the first time you're checking your e-mail, all messages are new by definition.
You can try the following to test this theory;
open a console (start, run, cmd.exe in windows 2000 or XP)
telnet to the mailserver, like so;
C:\> telnet pop3.example.com 110
where pop3.example.com is the name of your pop server.
Something like the following will happen;
S: is sent by the server
C: must be entered by you
T: is sent by telnet
T:Trying 127.0.0.1...
T:Connected to pop3.example.com.
T:Escape character is '^]'.
S:+OK Qpopper (version 4.0.5) at pop3.example.com starting.
C:user myusername
S:+OK Password required for myusername
Cass [email protected]
S:+OK myusername has 210 visible messages (0 hidden) in 6154998 octets.
Ok, you're in. To see a list of messages, simply type LIST
C:LIST
S:+OK 210 visible messages (6154998 octets)
S:1 5302
S:2 4761
S:3 1737
S:4 11728
....
S:210 754
S:.
Right, so there's the 210 messages, and their sizes.
You can try downloading a message using "RETR 1" (2, 3.. etc.)
But here's the thing. Try using the UIDL command;
C:UIDL
S:+OK uidl command accepted.
S:1 ^U?!!W+P"!##!Jd,!!
S:2 :*[!!)F]!!RJ<"!fMb"!
...
S:210 9*4!!0!)"!N+M"!RB["!
S:.
These are the unique IDs (although they might not look like it to you, they're like unique numbers).
These are needed, because if you delete ("DELE 5") message number 5, number 6 becomes number 5, etc.
If you get an error message when you issue the UIDL command to your POP server, nPop (nor any other program) cannot see which messages are new without downloading them.
Right - cheers for the explaination. But in fact, as I was trying to explain, nPop is absolutely fine - it will detect AND download messages fine.
It's pocket outlook that has the problem, even though other outlook versions are fine (as is nPop). I don't suppose that makes any difference?
Does anybody know of a method to force this to work? It's a right pain not being able to have a unified mail client.
Cheers everyone,
Phil
Ok, I misread your post then, but if it's a pocket outlook error message it's most likely to be complaining exactly about missing UIDL support
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321119
How to get around this? Simple - automatically forward all your e-mail to another address, which can be retrieved on a POP3 server that DOES support UIDL. You can still use your original e-mail address as your From: address and give it out to people, the only thing that you'd change is that you'd be forwarding your e-mail to a different server in order to retrieve it from there.
It may not be elegant, but it will work. Also, you'll waste less bandwidth on your xda (altough forwarding it from your original server to an UIDL supporting server does mean another copy will be sent over the Net, but those electrons are recycled).

Things I have learned regarding SPV M500 (magician) and Mac OS X
Pocketmac does not work. I have purchased both the pro and lite versions of this software and I can categorically say that it does not work. I managed to get it to sync with entourage contacts and address but the email support is very bad and after 24hrs of trying ity still does not work properly. The support system does not work either, I had several tickets started to try and resolve the problems but the support staff repeatedly requested information that I had previously stated in the original ticket requests. There is one redeeming aspect of my dealings with Pocketmac and that is that they did give a refund upon request; could this be because they are aware of the problems?
Switch to Missing Sync, it is the recommended software of mac and after using it I can see why, from the first connection to the first sync it was all plain sailing, it keeps you informed about choices it is making during the sync and was very stable. I can now sync ical with tasks and contacts. First class software. Once set up you can add and email account on the device and it allows a pass through with the settings for .mac auto detected. You simply set the delete period to 7 days on both the mac and ppc the messages are then synced on both. Avantgo works ok although you have to start the sync from avantgo, it is not automatic like on activesync.
The next problem was notes, I bet most of you work on the net on your mac and at some point want to some information from your mac to the ppc as quick and simply as possible, I searched and searched for software to do this but to no avail. Eventually I found some. What you need is an account with www.backpackit.com they allow a free account for notes, tasks and lists, it is a web based system that seems to work a treat, to allow sync between the systems you make their page an avantgo personal channel to be viewed on the device (the first time you sync do it while connected with the ppc, it will ask for a username and pass. The next thing you need is the desktop widget for os x, they connects to the backpack site and shows you previous messages in real time on the dashboard, you can add or edit items. Every time you sync avantgo picks this data up and adds it to the device. You can also add notes and lists etc through avantgo which consequently adds your data back to the widget.
How do you create an icon on the today screen which will open pocket outlook with a new message already addressed to your chosen contact. Again I looked high and low for a solution to this, my preivous post mentioned using wizbar and specifying mailto:yournumber as a command to start upon button press, this works well but as was pointed out by one of the replies it does use a lot of resources just to do a simple task, this is not necessary. I have been a calligrapher user for a while and have never really looked into the features too much, I now know that you can ad a command which can be activated by a simple written command with a circle around it, the command you need to open the mail app and address and txt is as follows:
<#start>tmail.exe
mailto:yournumber
This when activated will start p outlook with a pre addressed message.
Finally MMS message setup, I would guess that some of you have unlocked phones and need to set up mms, I am with virgin and tried the settings they provide although as you probably know the syntax is very different on a wm device so it can be quite confusing, this is a really simple tip but one that I overlooked for quite some time, I tried different settings over and over again and they would not work until I realised that the tele number you input to address the message must not have any spaces I know if sounds really stupid but I use calligrapher a lot and I was putting in the recipients number via the pen and there were obviously spaces in the number, all the messaged were being rejected for this reason and nothing to do with the settings, I felt very stupid but thought I must point this out to newbies like me.
2 other tips that I was not aware of until reading some other posts are: -
speaker phone on the magician can be activated by holding down the green call button in a call.
Pressing the green button followed by the : -
Right directional button gives call register
Left directional gives speed dials
I was not aware of either of these until reading the groups.
Hope the above helps, I am very much a newbie but love tinkering and will not rest until the device is how I like it.
I've searched and searched, but I can't seem to find anyone with this problem.
Basically, I'm trying to get my new Treo 750 to sync over wireless with my Exchange server. I run the Exchange server from my own house, on it's own domain. I've upgraded the Treo 750 to WM6. I previously did not try wireless sync on WM5. My Exchange server is 2003 SP2.
At first, I tried connecting via SSL only to get a message about the certificate not being valid. After fighting and fighting with trying to get the cert on the phone, I finally gave up and disabled SSL on the device in an attempt to connect.... via any means possible.
What I first thought was success has turned into another problem. I know I'm communicating with the server, as the policy from the domain controller made me set a device password. It was at that point that I knew I was getting somewhere. Now, when I hit "sync", I see it checking for changes. At the bottom of the screen, it'll run through each step: Contacts, Calendar, Email and Tasks.
Let me see if I can describe this..... It'll briefly pause at say... 0/80 for my Inbox, then count (very quickly, in large increments) till it hits the 80 and move on to the next item in the synchronization list. This cycle happens every 30 seconds or so.
When I go to look in my Inbox, it's empty. The only thing I see is at the bottom: "Outlook E-mail 0 Items". Same with Contacts, Calendar, etc...
Now here's the kicker. If I send myself a test email from an outside account... say, Gmail, the sync app will then show "Email 0/81", then tick up to 81 and move on to the next item. However, nothing is downloaded. I can pull up a list of all the personalized folders I've created for my mailstore, and they're all there. I can "subscribe" to them, yet they remain empty as well.
I'm completely at a loss. I don't know what else to do at this point, and it's proving to be a difficult thing to search for. Any advice you can give would be very much appreciated....
Well i do not use Direct Push but maybe the guys at Treo 750 forums can help you more, here is the Blueangel WM6 section
I was wondering if its possible to get pushmail for gmail without using outlook ?
Is this possible ? Am I supposed to use IMAP or POP mail ?
Please help, thanks
If you setup mail, it will automatically setup for IMAP.
You configure for how often it checks the server.
Thanks I just did that, but the problem is it checks every 5 minutes, thats not exactly push mail is it ?? It should have the option "As mail arrives"
I tried deleting an email from my inbox, but when I check online, its still there (the actual gmail inbox) .. it seems they are not really in function are they ?
EDIT : Okay The messages got deleted in the browser inbox after 5 minutes ... So the email syncs every 5 minutes
How can I make it an instant connection (pushmail) ??
Actually Outlook Mobile 2007/2010 still pulls from IMAP instead of receiving pushes (Microsoft doesn't exactly know about IDLE). You'll want to set up an Exchange connection. See here for more details about Google Sync.
You'll want to configure the server manually. You can find ActiveSync somewhere into your Start menu, otherwise just go to the Sense settings tab, Data Service and ActiveSync to configure the server, then follow the instructions from the link above.
Thank you very much, that worked, and I can choose "As item arrives" now
One last thing, is it possible to change the email name from Outlook to something else ? e.g. Gmail ?
ZaZu90, what domain did you choose while configuring the connection? I can't click next unless I choose a domain, since the activesync software is different and probably newer than the one used in the google instructions...
I followed Yunabeco's link, the domain was left blank.
You have to initiate the email settings from active sync, not from adding a new account.
Check the intsturctions ^^
Yes I am trying to do the same but as I said I cannot leave the domain blank, i HAVE to fill in something in order to continue configuring the connection...
And apparently I am not the only one with this problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5382949&postcount=4
Hmm this is strange, does it have to do with the location of purchase ?
Im not sure :S
I don't think it has to do with the location of purchase. Thanks for your help though. I am using dutty's holy grail 0.3a rom (wm6.5 build 21889, Base 2.01). What are you using?
Chaps,
have you had a look at this ....http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=138636
Might help you.

Yea, that's the same document as earlier in this thread, but the problem is that the instructions don't work on some devices.. see the previous page
I just did the Push Mail setup (used the link from Yunabeco post)
I had no problem with the instructions, but for some reason it will only get the mail when I do an ActiveSync.
The ActiverSync chedule is set to sync during Peak times (As Items arrive) and off-peak times (As Items arrive).
The Use above settings and Send/Receive when I click Send) are als set to on.
Did I miss a setting as it's not working for me the way it should, or do I need to set something in my Gmail account also?

Barty,
Surprised at this. I set this up the other day on my device in order to talk someone through it and it worked. Deleted it as I don't need push mail right now.
Wondered if those who can't get it working can put down the steps they have taken to setup on their devices and we can see how we can help?

I wonder if its possible to set up multiple push mail accounts ?
Gonna search for that now, if anyone got a link before I finish my little research, please add it !
All,
I'm sure, that this question is easy to answer for most of you:
Does the Tattoo supports an Exchange account? I have read that it is not supported (only over third party apps)
Please help me out on that!
Thanks a lot in advance,
Asterix
A friend told me that it does support MS Exchange.
He is using it.
But he sad that he just can't download attachments so he has to send those emails to his gmail account and then to download them.
The Mail app allows you to add an MS Exchance account. But it has NEVER worked for my email account. It might work for yours... who knows... But the Tattoo does support Exchange server.
It does work, but there is an issue.
I have access to my work email (via Exchange Server and the Mail app) and it was very easy to set-up. It works really well, the app is quite nice. It will do things like listing your emails by conversation.
However, I can only read emails. I can't send emails.
This is a bug in Android. Not sure whether it is being fixed in 2.1. I do think you can get it to work though if you have help from your IT team. I have read that they can change some of the security permissions on the Exchange server (ie exclude you from certain protocols). I haven't tried it though.

works great
Hi Guys, I was having the same problem with not being able to send mails and download attachments, even the mails which were longer, wouldn't load fully.
I requested the company's IT team to take a look at it and they changed some settings as Admins on the exchange server to get it working (I believe Android does not provide remote-wipe/ pin-password lock feature to be enforced, they had to bypass the check for me)
Hope it helps.
I had the problem of emails not sending when I set my son's Tattoo up.
I then accessed remote.xxx.com (where xxx is my domain name) and got an error, I tried again and it said the certificate was invalid, once I accepted it it let me in. I tried to access the Internal web site and got the cert error again. I accepted the cert again and just got a blank page.
I exited and have since been able to send emails without a problem.
I believe it's a certificate problem but mine has somehow resolved itself.

Interesting.
Sadly, tried it and didn't seem to work for me. It just kept defaulting to our corporate webmail server. I had heard it was a certificate problem too, but also the remote wipe etc needed in the security settings on the server.
Great that you've got it working though.

no problem
Hi!
Thanks for all the answers. I got my Tattoo now, setting up the exchange account was no problem at all, everything working fine. Some parts are a little bit not as fine as I'm used from my WM phones in the past. (times to set up when it should get the mails, which folder should get synchronized,..)
Thanks,
Stefan
I spoke to soon.
My son's phone keeps on saying it can't send - so I received 10 copies of the same email until I deleted it from the outbox.
There is a definite problem - has anyone found a solution?
anyone else using Outlook and getting the following error?
Outlook Error
Last updated 7 hours ago
We're having a problem syncing your information. Try again later.
Last tried about a minute ago.
Error code: 8500201F
i've tried restarting the phone, i have tried deleting and redoing the account - i have talked to my IT team at work - no idea what is going wrong. it was working fine then this.
I think this is related to the mailbox oversize.
Try to free some space by archiving or deleting some items.

Re: Outlook Error
Please follow this process:
1. Enter your Windowslive ID in the User name box
2. Enter your password
3. In the Server box, type (m.hotmail.com) and sign in, done!
Let me know if this work for you, bye.
Is the date and time on your phone correct?
I had this issue, but also realised it had screwed over my Outlook 2010 install on my laptop. I resolved it by deleting the email received immediately after the last successful sync by using OWA. What may be relevant is this email is auto-forwarded and permanently deleted by an Outlook 2010 inbox rule. Hope that helps someone.
Mailbox size
I had this problem, sorted emails by size and archived/deleted the massive ones. Problem solved.
