Hi all
In the proccess of unlocking my phone and wondering if any one has got a 3 sim to work?? (as 3 contracts are better value)
and is it easy to do if poss.
Nice one
Jo
Try this for a start:

I have two SIMs working, without the need to keep popping them in and out of the SIM holder - all I do is turn the phone off and then on to get the other SIM (Flight Mode).
I do not know if 3 is possible, the case is very tight! Swapping them manually should work, but you will get bored of removing the back panel and battery every time.
Ian
Hey IanF
I think J0bo means a sim by the company known as 3 (lol)
Will it work in an unlocked XDA.
Don't see why not?
Sorry i cant confirm this.
If it does work, i doubt wether the Video facility will work, but the regular mobile calls should work, unless the sims are of a completely diferent design & therefore are not compattible with the regular sim holders.
Good luck mate
E
Correct me if I'm wrong here, but 3 is a 3G provider and as far as I'm aware they do not do GSM/GPRS. Therefore the XDAII with out a major change of circuitry will never work on the 3 network.
I'd love to correct you if you were wrong, but unfotunately, i don't know what i am talking about. lol
Regards
E
of cause you cant use UTMS on a gsm phone
i do know that 3g phones can send on gsm aswell when they are in places where the UTMS network is not supported but if they use normal sized and functioned sims which would work as gsm when placed in a gsm phone i dont know but i kinda doubt it
yes cause you can use 3g sim they work in 3310s for god sake lol and the pen phone
they use o2 for 2g and their own network for 3g you wont be able to use 3g capabilites but 2g will work fine
they dont work in some types of phone for some reason though but i think i remember seeing xda2 in the does work list
gaz
First of all, I would like to recommend a good psychiatrist...for going on the 3 network.
I was on 3G for 2 weeks. I only had reception for one of those weeks!
Wait a few years until there are some more 3G masts(above schools and churches!)
Also I tried a 3G sim in a 6310i but it didnt work.
i would asume that when ever the utms network dident have connection it would just roam over gsm using the network from other companies
i've seen those 3 commercials with video phoning
and i've seen the video phoning irl
there is a world of difference
irl the video is 100% not sync with audio
and the video look like an old Chaplin movie because of those
low fps
looks like it's soo bad the p0rn industry will not ever begin to use it before they make it faster
but it read an article where they tried a CF utms card in a pocketpc
that really did wonders for the internet speed compared to grps
when i tried my 3g sim i managed to get a signal with it but it was same as putting it in an ol nokia... the text messaging doesnt work.

Ghost Sim
I really like the look of the ghost sim but am confused.
Can you toggle between thc two sims just by selecting "flight mode"? If so, could the RADIO app posted on this forum be assigned to a button to do the same thing?
Presumably some of you clever chaps could write an app to do this (with a different wallpaper for the two sims).
Thanks
Dave
Doh!!
Should have realised this was talking about '3' !! Sorry.
Quantum - Yep - I am using that app actually, its very neat!

Hi guys, after browsing through this forum I unlocked my xda 2 (many thanks) and have now tried my 3g sim card in the phone and it works fine. So far as I understand, I will effectively have no on air content e.g. gprs connection, gps wap, or any of the 3g stuff. Can I do either of these things: alter the gprs settings so they work with 3g... or using pocket internet explorer, dial up to a provider such as freeserve...
Many thanks,
JB
sure
just get 3g's
access point name
for their wap, grps and mms service
add them to your connections in settings and
maybe get the login and pass if 3g use that and you are set
speaking of that, since i am using 3g in australia, and while using the sim card on gsm phones, it is roaming on vodafone network.
does that mean if i have voda's wap, gprs config, i can use the gprs service?

Jim: i am new to 3G, are you saying that xda2 can support 3G and how does this differ from the norm GSM. Currently, i am on GPRS with GSM and does 3G works this differently. Thanks.
3g(UTMS) is the name of the 3th generation of mobil phoning
xda1 and 2 do not! support 3g you need a speciel 3g console to use 3g
it give a better bandwidth and they push it with video phoning

what console do i need to make my xda2 3 G-able. Thanks
I unlocked my xda II with the software available on this forum. I then simply put the 3G simcard in the phone and it worked... comes up with the O2 network. However Three have now said that they have built in measures to stop this working now.... although I'm not sure whether this is true or not (I've tried 3 3g simcards in my unlocked xda2 and they all work and two of them are less than three weeks old). Now I've never heard of it happening to an XDA 2 before, but there are rumour that putting the three simcard into a 2 or 2.5g phone can physically damage it. Anyway, I've had no problem, so give it a try if you feel brave (I take no responsibility ). (BTW you don't get 3G content... and I couldn't get GPRS working! so its a phone only).
Cheers,
Jim

only way i can think of is getting the xda2 backpack which have a cf
slot and get that UTMS /3G cf card and use that
where Can I buy a UTMS /3G cf card for my XDA II?
where Can I buy a UTMS /3G cf card ?
i have no idea

Hi, I have a unlocked Wizard & my T-Mobile contract has just expired, I was just wondering if a 3G sim (3) would work in it as there are some cheap deals on that network? I wouldn't use it for video calls so thats not a problem.
im 99% sure they DONT! however maybe someone there can prove me wrong
I'm using a Cingular 3G SIM in my 8125 with no problems at all.

a cingular 3G sim and a "3" UK usim are not the same, one runs at 3 volts (sim) and the other at 5 Volts (usim)
Aha! More than I knew! I knew it! Thanks for correcting me..

what our american brothers call a "3g" sim and what the network provider called "3" use are slightly different things.... a american 3g sim is simply a normal 128k provisioned with extra services I.e. data and video calling (this is the same way all the gsm uk networks work too) however with "3" being the first 3g only network in the world they choosed to use the next generation of sim card called a usim which don't work in lots of non 3g phones including the wizard. try googling the word "usim" to see wot I mean
Under 3's terms and conditions you are not allowed to use their sim in a 2.5g phone. If you do use one and it works, they will eventually block it and send you a new sim with a gentle reminder that you are in breach of Ts and Cs.
Cheers Chaps, 3 it isn't then!
My O2 UK 3G UMTS sim works perfectly in my Wizard. You just can`t really get the benefits from it (Faster GPRS/EDGE etc....).
Does HTC diamond 2 have 3G support. I want to use THREE network, but it is not listed anywhere. so I don't know...

yes its 3g, so you can use your 3 simcard no problem
Just search for "3G" in TD2's manual and you'll find plenty of results!
big thanks.... all carriers need to update their database.... and websites... I have problems with all of them.... O2 is not friendly with visa electron..three doesn't have all 3g phones...
vodafone
but to be fair 3's network coverage is shocking anyhow, vodafone don't sell it however there seems to be at least three of us here with them and this phone lol
the phone also comes with hspda, if you want i can put my 3 sim into my phone and make sure that it works fine
I am in the UK and on O2 and no matter where I seem to go I cannot pick up a 3G signal...Edge is the best I get.
Is anyone else with O2 and has managed to pick up a 3G signal?
yes get a H in lots of places anoying thing is at work i keep swapping between full nomal G and 1 bar of H

I don't think I've seen my O2 HD2 drop away from a 3G signal yet! Its sat on 3G/HSDPA since I got it.

Its alright for some!
Just took a quick look at mine and once again its Edge....I had heard O2 was pretty poor for 3G signals; I take it I shouldn't need to configure anything on the phone - if a 3G signal is there it should just pick it up?
I didnt even know that there was anything else apart from GSM until i moved out of the valley when i was a teenager to go uni. You might just be unlucky and in an area with no 3G coverage.
how old is the sim card? i couldnt get anything other than gprs/edge but that was due to my sim card not being 3g
I had the same issue. I requested a new 3g sim from o2 as I had my existing sim for at about 9 years, noticed that the gold contacts on the new sim were configured differently. Upon using the new sim have always received HSDPA signal. I suggest you request for a new 3g sim .

I had the same problem, old sim card. just nip into an O2 shop and pick one up. I called up to activate mine and it was working within 10 minutes
i generally get H unless im at work in which case i get crap signal and slow net lol and thats the time i want to play on phone haha
Chees guys....yes the sim card is pretty old.
I'll give it a whirl and see how I get on.
Ta!
It will be due to the SIM card, I called O2, asked for a 3G sim, and i got one the next day!
I switched from the touch pro to the HD2 and stopped getting 3g or hsdpa. I installed a cab from the touch x thread in the themes forum. That put a switch in comm manager to turn 3g back on.

Yep Andy, it's your sim, I was paying O2 for 3G for 3 years and only getting Edge until a sales rep at a Vodafone shop noticed and told me to ask O2 for a new sim.
Result!! HSDPA at my home address.
Good Luck.
Hmm, think I may need a new sim too then. I assumed i was in a dodgy reception area, and have never seen a 3g signal. Is there a specific phone number/email address for this? Will they just send a new sim out if you just ask for a new one?
Good advice, let us know whether the new Sim does the trick.
I have a new (year old) o2 sim and can get on 3g/HSDPA in covered areas normally but I find the connection less than consistent in places that aren't 'fully' covered.
In my Hermes or in my o2's mobile bb dongle I can get a constant 3g connection with no dropouts, whereas my HD2 has trouble keeping that kind of consistency, going from full 'G' to 1-2 bar 3g (or more).
I flashed with a new radio which seems to have helped somewhat, but at my gf's place where there is currently no hard-wired broadband and 3g is needed, I end up connecting to WMWiFiRouter on her Hermes as a constant 3g connection is guaranteed. Mine will drop to 'G' seemingly at random and can take some time to find 3g again.
I'm going to flash with various other radios when I get some time this week and will post the results in this thread too, as everyone here will likely be o2 users possibly in the same boat.
Using HTC 1.66 Rom, radio 2.09.51.03_2.

I would think calling 202 from your phone would do the trick, just go through the menus... if you get someone who doesn't know what you're going on about, just ask to speak to a manager / better department.

They just sent me a new one, no apology, no offer of a refund for years of 2.5G.
I guess it's convenient (for O2) if people just carry on thinking that they have no 3G signal, after all, bandwidth is money
Yeah just spoke to them from 202 and theyve sent a new one out. Thankfully this HD2 is the 1st smartphone Ive had, from last Dec, so Ive not lost out for too long without 3g, thanks to xda.

Hi people,
I've searched the forum for an answer to my question, no joy so here goes on a new thread.
I recently bought myself a Chinese dual sim smart phone, named "Longhorn" (no sniggering!), but pretty sure it's better known as a STAR MTK6573. Great phone for the money, 1GB processor, all the bells and whistles. My problem is that I want to use two sim cards, one from a British network, one from a Norwegian network. Right now I'm in Norway and the Norwegian sim is working faultlessly, the British sim works when the phone is switched on first, but then after varying amounts of time the British sim drops out of service. If I turn the phone off, then restart the UK sim comes back into service but again goes off after some time, sometimes minutes, sometimes hours.
I've looked through the sim related settings but can't find a solution, and even contacted the British network operator to see if they know any answers - they don't.
I'll be going to the UK shortly so it'll be interesting to see if the Norwegian sim starts cutting service when I'm there, in the time being does anyone have any ideas for a permanent solution?
Thanks to all for reading, and musing on the problem, in anticipation.

Did you try switching the SIM-Slots ?
Are both using same freq ?
Did you used Sim-Turbo or other "perfect unlockers" ? <- im asking because after using one of those "great" inventions my SIM started to droping signal on diffrent phone (like the X-Turbo/X-Sim/Sim-Turbo) install some junk on sim...

Hi, thanks for your answer. I haven't installed any sim "enhancing" software, and the phone is brand new. Swapping the sim slots doesn't seem to make a difference, even though only one is WDMA. I think the problem is to do with roaming from my UK sim, when the signal strength drops out the sim loses service to the roaming network, but doesn't reinstate the service when signal improves.
Update
OK, so a little progress was made! The phone only has the option to set one of the SIMs as 3g. The local SIM was set as the default and therefore had the 3g setting applied to it. If I force change the 3g to the roaming SIM the roaming SIM stays in service for longer, and is more stable but still loses service periodically (at least twice a day). Any further suggestions?

OK, so I now have a working dual sim phone using two networks from two different countries. My initial headaches were all caused by the overseas network SIM. Either faulty or incompatable but after a SIM swap from the network company it now works faultlessly.
