Hello,
I have 3 items on my plate and I'd appreciate any feedback regarding them:
1) i'm using a 512 mb card; i was having some difficulty because the memory of the card would only go up to around 300. at first i thought there was a problem with the card itself so i had to constantly erase the contents to make mp3s, files, pics, mpegs, etc fit. then i stumbled upon the pc command for formatting disks; there were 3 options to format the sd card: FAT, NTFS and FAT32. when i used fat32; the behavior was the same and the memory usage would only go up to 300 max. when using ntfs; my xda2 refused to recognie the card (it wouldn't show up in the explorer app). when i formatted using FAT, everything was great. i can now use the sd card to it's limits and am no longer restricted to the 300-mb trouble i was having.
question: what's the difference in the 3 formats? obviously using FAT was the best thing to do, but what's with the other formats?
2) i was having some problems with loading up mpegs in the sd card. i created folders (example: mp3s, movies, pics, etc). naturally i placed the mpeg files in the "movies" folder; when i used pocket tv to play them the files were not recognized. when i used pocket mvp video came out but a sign kept flashing "error in audio". when i loaded the mpeg files straight to the sd card (no folders assigned), pocket tv and pocket mvp played them perfectly.
question: anyone else experiencing this and if yes what's the story? the mp3 files are in a folder and i don't stumble into any issues with those items.
3) anyone know of a good vcd-ripper program where i can extract clips or create my own small mpeg files? i'd like to extract some of the more memorable scenes in some movies...rather than waste space by seeing scenes which bore me.
cheers mates
robson
Some hints
Hi,
i also have a 512 meg sd card for my XDA 1, without any problems.
Try to format the card using the storagetools freeware:
http://www.pocketpccity.com/software/pocketpc/StorageTools-2002-4-5-ce-pocketpc.html
I also have mp3's and mpeg's on this card. Make sure that you use the latest version of activesync to tranfer the files to the sd card or use a sd card adapter (i use a pcmcia adapter).
here is how to produce your own media files for the ppc:
http://www.mathiaspohl.de/mda
There are 2 sections, 1st is about "How to create DIVx files" for the PPC, the second one is "How to create media files" (i.e. wmv) for this.
regards, Koponet
Not too impressed with storagetools.
It only detected my XDA-IIs 14MB of ROM and not my 512MB SD card.
maybe you should try ....
format SD card within external SD reader attached to notebook, using some desktop application ... or try using
http://www.cnetx.com/Format/download.asp
and verify SD media for errors ...

FAT (File Allocation Table), FAT32 and NTFS (NT File System) are file systems originally made for disk partitions. FAT (also called FAT16) was the original file system used in DOS and has a partition size limit of 2 GB. FAT32, an extended variant of FAT16, was introduced first in Windows 95 OSR2 and increased the partition size limit to 2 terabytes. NTFS, a totally different file system, was introduced in Windows NT. Unlike the FAT file systems, NTFS has security and transaction rollback features. Random access to a huge file is also more efficient in NTFS. Moreover, while the file size limit on FAT32 is 4 GB, a file on NTFS can grow up to 16 exabytes (16 billion gigabytes).
question to JARGON please
today I have tested sandisk 512MB SD card ....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have 512MB SD card and am allowed to fill it up to the full limit of roughly 484MB and not 512MB, ok .. it is a matter of formatting plus a consequence of the fact that 1MB equals 1024kB but I am curious about the other thing .... I remember old times back with IPAQ + PCMCIA sleeve with inserted flash card 1280MB of sandisk - the size written on the back of the card WAS EXACTLY matching what PPC2002 was showing .... 1280MB
to me it seems like either different "disk geometry" or disk format - can anyone explain it to me pls
regards,
monika
An SD card uses a portion of its memory for its security data. That's why you can't use the entire capacity of the SD card. That's also the reason why an MMC, which doesn't have the SD card's security features, has more available memory than an SD card with the same total capacity.
uuups, you are right ...
according to Sandisk SD card manual
http://www.sandisk.com/oem_sd_memorycard.html
user can access only 940,864 bytes plus 10,240 secure area (which are not accessed by user) ... what a rip-off on 512MB card format .. upppps

right converted my dvd to a avi file and now got to put onto my memory card, but when i click copy it goes to copy it but when it gets half way it just re starts copying it again? is it cause the file is too big?
also how do i check how much memery space i got left on my memory card?
same problem
They only way I have found to copy mpegs or avi's to the mem card is to skip activesync altogether and use the adapter for my minisd card to plug into my laptop directly ( I have an sd port). If you dont have that you can buy a usb adapter that will do it. I then do a normal file copy to the storage card, place it back in the wizard and it works fine.
If you dont have an adapter for your memory card use wm5torage http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=271652
I haven't dl'd any movies yet, but have had similar problems with large files. I have found that if you go to Tools->Options and uncheck Media, then Sync and disconnect and reconnect your device, it should not restart your Sync proccess midway.
After the file is dl'd, just reselect Media, and Voila!
Hope this helps!
I've got hold of a new MicroSD card, class 2 16Gb.
I've got about 6Gb of music which I want to copy across but I am having huge problems.
Firstly I tried using Windows Media Player sync function - but it only works for about 20 tracks and then stalls.
Copying the files directly using 'Disk' or 'ActiveSync' settings - look like everything is OK, but when I look at some of the contents of the folders they have wierd/scrambled names.
What is really puzzling me, is that I have both quick, and full, formatted the SD Card and the same folders are always messed up. I have tried every combination of copy method I can think of!!! The files are fine on my PC.
Copying the backup of the contents of my old SD Card onto the new one works fine.
Anyone else had this? Is it my SDCard that is screwed? Please Help!!!
no it's active sync and media player that are screwy. for best results put the card in a card reader on your pc, or if not available when connecting the phone to pc choose disk drive mode and copy it that way.
I'd say you got a faulty / "fake" card.
Hi,
About month ago I bought a new 16GB micro SDHC card from Kingston (product page at kingston.com/ukroot/flash/sdhc_micro.asp ) for my HTC Hero (GSM version). Since them I'm having a problems with copying and accessing my files from this card.
According to seller, this should be Class 6 card, here is the auction:
allegro.pl/kingston-microsd-16gb-class6-najszybsza-na-allegro-i1233201913.html
Getting to the point... Situation is like this:
(I tried all those things listed below under Froyd 1.5 and Villain ROM 12, with latest radio)
I connect my Hero to PC (on xp or ubuntu) and I copy files to card (...big deal . After that I wait for a few seconds and unmount the disk on PC and turn off USB MassStorage on Hero, then I unplug the usb cable. Card is then normally mounted. After that, when I try to access those files i.e.: via Astro, Music player or PDF reader, I cannot do this, because all copied files disappeared or sometimes they're are on the card but are corrupted and any app can't open them. Moreover all copied directories are there but all are empty.
I tried various ways to copy files: via adb, ftp, dropbox, recovery mode (amonRa 1.7). I even tried removing all spaces from dir and file names, it doesn't matter, but every time it's the same.
I also noticed a lot of files in LOST.DIR on card. I know that the system stores there files that weren't properly copied and/or card was unmounted too fast, but usually there is less files that I copied. I even tried to rename few of those files (that I know that were mp3 or pdf) and add mp3 or pdf extension to them, but music player or pdf reader showed error that file is corrupted or something similar.
I followed also tutorial from the unclockr:
theunlockr.com/2009/10/15/how-to-switch-to-a-different-microsd-card-on-android-when-using-swap-hero-and-or-apps2sd/ but with same result.
Any ideas, how to solve the problem? (beside returning the card to the seller?)
ps.
Cheers,
J
Ok, I think we can close this topic.
I checked this card in another telephone (different than at first time), and situation was the same.
I have to return this card to the seller.
I have bought a 16GB SD card for my Xperia X8, as is the maximum which it supports, by what SE says.
Since yesterday I am experiencing some crazyness transfering my MP3 files to it.
First I transfered about 6GB of MP3 files to it. Windows shows the file on the SD Card, when I unplug the USB, it recognizes only 2GB of files there, File Explorer and Music Player only shows these 2gb of files (from letter A to H, for example).
Plugged into a Macbook of a friend, it really shows until this H folder. OK, maybe some transfer failure. Second time, transfered from another PC, same issue.
At the third time, I transferred the files from a Linux machine. After almost an hour copying, I unplugged the phone, and the folder was TOTALLY EMPTY. 0 files, nothing transfered. Just created the folder without nothing on it. Music Player shows 0 files, File Explorer shows 0 files... Then I plugged into the PC again... and the folder was empty!
I am using MiniCM. Is there any issue related to this ROM about SD Cards? I don`t have any other device to test.

When you finish transferring files, make sure you eject the memory card on your PC before you disconect your USB from phone, this can cause problems on custom roms if you don't eject drive on computer first. Happened to me a few times.

I am always ejecting.
Tried to transfer now from the Macbook. Same stuff, transfered everything, when the phone mounts the SD card, it "deletes" the rest, keeping only the first 1.79gb, alphabetically.
Try that put your sd into cardreader, and copy files, than put back into the mobile. If it works, the card is ok. If it isn't, format the sd card.
Best regards

Strange indeed, I'm using 16gb sandisk SD and only get problems like this if I don't eject device before I remove USB cable.. Have you tried putting the files on using a card reader and then putting it back into your phone?

Well, I don't have a microSD card reader. I'm transferring to my brother's Samsung I6220 (surprisingly, much more faster on file transfer than Xperia, even having a lower hardware and the weird system). Will update this post when done, after putting the card back on my X8.
Updating: Used the same card on a Samsung I6220. Transferred the same music files, 5GB total. All files recognized on Samsung phone.
When put the card again on X8, almost everything was deleted, only 1GB of files there.

Then it should be the ROM. Have you tried a Factory Reset?
After copying everything again to the Samsung, the same issue. Seems like the problem is the card. Everything beyond 2GB is deleted.
Thanks for your help, guys. Thread closed.
...well, 1 time I connect my phone to my pc,
then for some reason I dissconnect it and download a file on sd card... I connect it again 3-4 times but I couldnt see the file (hidden files were displayed). Back in my phone the file was there.

Thats strange, that happend 2 me twice, some files doesnt exist on the mobile anymore (of course I ejected)
