Charging XDA2 Backpack - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Hi,
Recently I bought the XDA2 backpack. After looking through the manual, there wasn't any instruction on charing the backpack battery. Anyway, I attched to the XDA2 and charged through the cradle, but the backpack battery wouldn't get charged. Any idea what's going on.
Thankz

Did you plug in the power adapter to the cradle? Charging via USB power alone is probably not enough to charge both the XDA II battery and the Backpack battery.

Backpack problems
I got my backpack on Friday 24/3/4, had no problems charging with either USB, or AC Adaptor. What I did have problems with though, was that when I ran the backpack flat (and used my phone battery for the rest of the day), I found that the phone no longer recognised the backpack. NOTHING I could do, would charge the backpack battery, and the phone wouldn't even see it. I even tried charging without the normal battery, and only the backpack. (DON'T DO THIS, I LOST ALL DATA).
I ended up replacing it from my place of purchase. (I'm fortunate to still be in the DOA period)

Charging my XDAII & Backpack via USB, works fine

rahjinoh - Have you let your backpack run completely dry yet? Like, until even your phone battery drop to 25%? Perhaps mine was faulty...

Hi Kev_in_oz,
I had the same problem as you did. The backpack was working fine the first 5 days I had it. On the 6th day, my unit couldn't recognize it, no matter what I do. Had to have my backpack replaced as well. I'm glad it's still under warranty.
The question is, is it just a faulty hardware, or something is wrong with its design - I hope not!
How is your replacement backpack so far?

It's Ok at the moment, but mine only had the problem when I dropped it down to Zero. I called the XDA Help-line (after replacing my battery), but they said that I'm supposed to drain it to zero (they actually said "Charge it for 8 hours, then let both the phone and backpack drain to Zero, then charge it for 8 hours again, and backup often, as you will lose all your data when everything's at Zero").
I'm sacred to do it now, as my shop is out of stock, and if this one dies, I'll be stranded without my compact flash slot. I had to wait 3 months before they got the first unit into Australia, and I'm terrified it will take just as long to re-stock.
Personally I believe it's Faulty Hardware design, ie the Backpack can't be "seen" when it's on zero charge, thus isn't charged...?

Well, When I got my original backpack, it was drained (0%) when I checked it. XDA was able to recognize it.
I'm afraid that it might be something else...I hope that it wont happen again as I have the same situation as you have, no more stock from where I purchased mine. I had to wait about 3 months as well to get my unit...
Here are some of the things I did on the day my XDA lost sight of the backpack:
1. I went to a computer store and was curious with an EagleTec CF Wifi card which I inserted in the backpack. It wasnt plug and play, tried to install the driver but an error occured. On my way back, I noticed backpack couldnt be detected. After several attempts (soft reset, dettached/attach backpack, the unit detected it again).
2. On the way home, I used a brando sync charger with a car adapter...Backpack was fully chargred when I got home. After a while, my unit couldn't see the backpack again, this time it was permanent. The next day, I was able to replace my backpack....
Now I don;t know what really caused the problem...I really hope that it doesn't happen again!!!

Kev, where did you buy it? Retailer? OW?... I try to get one for a while but haven't been lucky so gar...
Regarding you battery problem: I think it could be either a faulty device or the current software doesn't work properly (don't forget that you got your XDA before they even releazed the back pack - they should have a fix for it with the next ROM upgrade)
Besides: is the battery inside the pack user replaceable?

I'm extremly happy with my BackPack, combined with a Dell CF WiFi card it adds a lot more versatility to the XDA II. I LOVE the presentation software, works a treat, particularly like the feature of being able to display the speaker notes on your XDA II but only the slides are projected. Very handy.
I have not run the battery to zero but I would have liked a way to charge the BackPack separate from the XDA II

When I got my backpack it was already left 25%, I just couldn't charge it using both USB and the adapter. I think I got a faulty device. Need to exchange for a new one. Thankz

My Back pack has died AGAIN!!! I'm doing the 8 hour charge (roughly once every 3 days, when my main battery drop to about 20%). Now my phone no longer recognises the backpack. My wifes phone (she got one on the 2nd April) also does not recognise the backpack now, so it's not a handset problem.
Does anyone else have this problem?!?

Doh!
I received my back-pack just today...
...and I'm reading these post just now.
However, it seems my back-pack is only not able to charge its battery.
Because I bought it far far far from here I think not to ship back and change it.
My question: You having problems with back-pack battery charging, did you find something wrong using the CF slot?!?
And...is it still working or You left it on the shelf?!?
Thank You in advance!

XDA Weird Issues

I got my xda 2 a while back, about 2-3 months, never noticed this before, but, it seems when its in the cradle, and the cradle is plugged into both USB and the DC adapter, the whole phone becomes live, i've had a few (minor) shocks off it, seems there must be some earth leakage somewhere. Anyone had any issues like this? I think its also causing the XDA to hard reset when being dropped into the cradle, its done it a few times, but its gotten really bad latley. anyone any ideas? I dident get it from o2 so i dont know what they'd be like on the RMA, i dont mind paying for a repair if necessary. or will it be easier to buy a new cradle and adapter?
Cheers
Joel
Probably easier and cheaper to buy a new cradle. Strange though, I thought the cradle case was plastic (mine's at home, so can't check). What happens if you use just the dc plug with the push-in convertor? Sure you haven't got a bit of scarf stuck in the xda's pins that's connecting up to the case when you push it home?
rgds,
Alex.
yeh, thets what im thinking, it seems ok if the cradle isnt plugged into usb, i'll try it on a different computer, i have had problems with my laptop and shorting before :/
Well I'd definitely advise against using it in the laptop anymore until you track it down. If current is being passed through the wrong channels, you're running the risk of frying your device. I'm sure you know that
Having just said don't use it on that laptop anymore, how about trying different USB ports to see if you have a port or a mobo problem? Shorts can be very difficult to track down, good luck.
rgds,
Alex.
It should charge without the power if you have usb plugged in, or so I have been told. If you ring O2 service centre on 08081003427 they will ask you how long you have had it, I was not asked who supplied it, I told them I had it less than 3 months and they sent me a cardboard carton to put it in and a bag to send it back, then fixed it and sent it back.
Well its started being really weird now, it seems to randomly hard reset, and it also comes up with backup battery low, but on the battery screen it says is full, does the backup battery recharge itself or is it none rechargeable?

Urgent: Does yours power up with no battery just charger?

My Wizard completely died a few days ago.
(See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=212385#212385)
I have now exchanged the device (but not the battery) for a new one, and the replacement is also dead!
However, I am using the same battery.
To decide whether the battery is the cause, I tried to power up the device just using the standard mains charger, which normally works for some devices, but still no power.
Can you help me by telling me if your Wizard will switch on with no battery, just the charger connected?
Couldn't get it to turn on with either USB charger or wall charger when the battery is removed.
Many thanks, look like my battery just 'died' then. What could cause this?
It was fully charged at the time, so most strange. Is it possible that the 3rd-party charger desk cradle I purchased from http://www.gpsforless.co.uk/product_details.php?id=1579 could have done something, or are these things generally quite harmless and it therefore more likely I just got a bad battery?
USB charger? Should be fine then... those shouldn't be any different from the USB charger/data cable that came with it - the power is coming from the USB bus itself.
So I guess your battery may just be fubar
The plot thickens... reeeally strange one this! :? I'd say I was pretty technically minded, always find myself fixing friends' and family's computers etc. but check this:
1) My Xda failed as you know above
2) Replaced the Xda for a new one, but kept same battery - didn't work
3) Swapped them back again so I had my old Xda, but put NEW battery in it - still didn't work!!
At this point I was very puzzled. A new Xda didn't work with my old battery. The old Xda didn't work with a new battery. Only conclusion - both the Xda and the battery had simultaneously blown each other.
I then exchanged both the Xda and battery for new ones, and at last it is working. Luckily I did a backup a few days earlier.

Not that weird, the battery charge & power circuit goes bang, that then fubars the battery so you would have exactly what you did, 1 dead battery & 1 dead XDA

My Wizard is dead!

The battery died on my Wizard. It kept beeping at me telling me that it was going low and then finally it powered itself off. Now, it won't even take a charge. (I plug the charger in and it doesn't even light up.)
Cingular is sending me a new 8125, but I was wondering if there was a way to get this one working before Monday so I can get some data off of it.
I'm sure I probably need a stronger charger, as I've heard that the 1A charger that comes with the Wizard sometimes will correct this issue. (I bought my 8125 off of eBay and the guy only sent some aftermarket travel charger for a V3.)
how about borowing a charged baterie from a friend or even the from aCingular store.
You need the original charger to charge the battery when it gets dangerously low. If the battery completely died, you most likely damaged it anyway (it's a lithium battery, and should never be allowed to drain all the way). When the new one comes, try the new battery in the old unit.
You have to charge it with the original charger, if you don't have or you still have problems you can see here what i do to charge the battery:

Interesting.. I'm going to try that in the morning.
Normally it's plugged in most of the time in the car cradle. I had been using it for navigation all day on Friday and I was in and out of the car all around the city so I guess I forgot to plug it in most of the time. (I had my BT GPS plugged in instead.)
Hope that works!
That worked!
It was kind of "ghetto" but cutting apart an old USB cable. holding the red/black wires to the +/- terminals on the battery respectively for about 3 minutes jolted it back to life! That was just enough to get enough juice to load Windows, to seemingly activate the charging circuit.
Wonder what I should do.. Take the warranty 8125 or send it back saying I got mine working. Reloading will be a pain though, so I might just keep this one.

Happens to me ocasionally.
Try a softreset and it will charge again.
Happens to me all the time...
Can it be connected to the fact that some applications crash and leave the system unstable ?
I did soft and hard reset, but it won't charge. Now the phone is dead, i am in the process of arranging funeral with HTC. I email HTC, have not heard from them yet.
May your P3600 rest in peace...and be quickly replaced (maybe only the battery pack...)
My phone is acting very weird too. I charged it up, left it overnight. Turned it on in the morning, it was at 90%, after about 3 minutes of wifi, it was at 80%.
Charing - need 500mah
Make sure that you're using the right charger - I was using accessories from my Dopod 818 Pro - the P3600 would say it was charing, but wasn't actually -because we need a 500mah instead of 250mah (or some such).

my trinity stop charging too...
the headset works fine but it doesn't charge and don't sync too... i've tried hard reset but still not charge...
how do you fix that?
Have to send it to assistence?
I've the same problem... help!!!!!!!
Did anyone get anywhere with this? Been a while and no updates.
My GF uses my old Orange SPV M700 as a GPS in the car, and plays solitaire.
It started to drain really quickly then it refused to charge at all.
I figured the battery had died, so bought a cheap compatible to check it was that.
The cheap compatible came 80% charged, but after two hours of charging, while switched on, battery was showing 70%
I've tried both the original HTC charger and the motorola charger that came with my Bluetooth headset.
Neither seem to work, does it sound like a soft reset might help, or does it sound like the phone is kippered.
I'm not an Orange customer any more (They wouldn't do me a good deal on an Omnia), and it is only as a SatNav/PDA rather than phone, so while it would be no mad loss if is dead, SWMBOd doesn't want to spend out on anything to replace it.
I problem with mine was the mainboard, and it had to be replaced.
If yours still has warranty, deliver it to a repair center.
If not, you have to find a way to charge the battery on another device...

I guess I'm looking for an external battery cradle and then and keeping a spare battery charged.
I think the phone is nearly 2 years old and out of contract
Just a quick update.
Both the motorola and htc USB chargers I have are both full 550miliamp usb chargers.
When plugged in the led goes from solid red, to flashing orange, temporarily to solid orange then a low battery warning, might be fine for 5 minutes or half an hour, then cycles back to solid red and arround again.

X10 Charge / Battery - Faulty?

Hi guys
I've trawled through the forum and not seen a post with my problem
I got my X10 yesterday, got it home, left it on charge for around 5/6 hours. Gave me full battery. Used the phone all day yesterday, however when put on charge it wouldn't charge? I read somewhere that first time charge it may have to drop to 5% before would charge. So left the phone on for it to fully drain.
It turned itself off yesterday at about 4pm GMT - Plugged it into AC charger, sony erricson screen loads up, then it just says power down and turns itself off.
It has been plugged in usb on 2 different PC's, I've tried using different sockets around the house, I've taken battery out, checked terminals they are clean.
When plugged in the red led just flashes every few seconds and if I unplug the charger and goto turn on it just flashes 3 times.
It has been on 'charge' for over 14 hours now and still it loads up then powers down, occasionally it will flash up saying 2% battery left please connect charger.... (I've had it on charge over 14 hours..)
Could this be a dodgy battery? It worked fine yesterday from the intial charge when I recieved it.
Thanks
Stu
Seems to just be in a constant loop
I am going to ring carphonewarehouse at 11 when they open, but I'm guessing they'll just ask me to send the phone back...
sounds like cable or the wall charger itself or even the battery. best is to take it where you bought it and have them test what is the issue is.
Yeah, going to ring at 11 when the shop opens. Hopefully they can switch me a battery and charger in shop and we'll go from there. Just strange how it worked the previous night!

the x10 uses way more power during switch on and charging and this power cannot be suplied by the usb port.
use a wall charger instead...
Charger
When battery is drained, it can take a while for led to light up (giving impression of not charging). You may find that leaving it plugged in for 10 mins will resolve your concerns, the led will light up showing charge state.
External charger? Will it work?
the manual says that it can take up to 30 mins for the phone to even recognize charging. so if you see he red light flashing, its nothing to be concerned about.
i to have had the same problem, not charging and shutting itself down. i had mine 8 days and it was the first day i had used it, took it back t-mobile for repair and they sent it back to SE, 2 weeks later i had a report on what was wrong with it,
Apparently i dropped it or crushed it, just from picking it up and plugging to be charged, so now SE wont repair it. doesnt matter how much i argued with t-mobile that i did not drop it and they will always take the word of the engineer. so i am without a phone and still paying a £35 month contract, and in the long process of contacting t-mobile head office with the supply of goods and services act 1982, all i want them is to repair the damm phone. any one else got any more suggestions
Had similar problem downloaded USB drives and had to do a hard reset on phone. Worked fine after go to Sony Ericsson web check for support and downloads for x10.
I had the exact same problem. Phone would not take a charge and wasn't being recognized by my comp. I tried my battery from my X1 and it worked, and tried charging the battery via my X1 and battery was charging so it was obviously a problem with the charge port. I looked into getting it repaired via warranty but the Sony rep quoted me an unacceptable amount of time. I was able to get it repaired locally same day for $45. Works perfectly now.
Just to clarify for future readers, there may be two issues: (1) software, which per @RMD357, requires downloading the drivers again and doing a hard reset, and (2) hardware, which per @dunny, requires repairing the charge port.
Question to @RMD357, where did you find the drivers to download? I searched the SE website and could not find drivers.
Question to @dunny, what do you tell the repair person if you suspect that the charge port is an issue.
Thanks.
@visitador02 I just told the person at the repair shop my phone stopped taking a charge/being recognized on pc and that I tested different batteries, chargers, and cords so it was most likely a charge port issue. The guy at the shop told me that the charge port was probably damaged while connected to the USB cable and just replacing the part solved the issue. I believe the part cost like $10.
