default internet connection on UK O2 - Networking

hi:
when I got the XDA it already has an internet connection setup on it - I assume it is built in...
the name is MOBILE WEB GSM
number: +447712932932
does anyone know the following info about this connection
the password
how much the call costs (ie local, normal rate etc )
I need the password in case the conenction gets damaged and I have to re-set it up, I need the other so I know how much it is costing me!
thanks

Vodafone Dial-up settings on the XDA

Hello all
Can any walk me through a set up on the XDA for a vodafone dial-up internet connection. My SIM card doesnt support GPRS and out boss thinks GPRS is too pricey, so I am stuck using dial-up for the time being. The problem is there seems to be conflicting info on the internet about how to set it up... and most of that is for a Nokia phone.
I am sure someone is out there who can help me out...
Thanks! 8)

Have you not tried the Vodafone web site (I'm assuming they support GSM dial up to their web service).
Alternatively, you may want to consider using O2 Mobile Web via GSM longcode.
Optimises http, so can be quite tolerable for PDA friendly web sites and light email usage.
Settings:
Dialup +447712932932
DNS1 193.113.200.200
DNS2 193.113.200.201

Forgot to mention that username and password can be anything, but not left empty.

Thanks. Those numbers worked like a charm.
I will also contact Vodafone and ask them for the dial-up access.

You need to find out from the service provider the access point name for gprs connection, username and password, and domain if applicable. Once you have this information and if the gprs is functional, it is smooth sailing. for browsing, you must find out if your isp requires proxy. if so, you must configure proxy settings in the connection manager. msn messenger works most of the times without proxy. it is possible that if web browsing requires proxy, you can't connect to msn messenger with the same connection settings.

I have the same problems. Nobody in Spain knows how to set my o2 to work in the Internet using GPRS. I asked the providers by their ****ing short number (It was vodafone) But There are no any specialists at this country. They can do NOTHING. They do not know anything. I asked everybody at different provider´s offices but I haven´t had the right answers. HELP ME PLEASE to SET MY O2 TO WORK WITH INTERNET IN MADRID.
They gave me different variants of "access point name", username, password and so on. But no one of their settings work. I´m ready to change my provider, that vodafon. I´m ready to do everything to get right settings to get to the internet. Help me please. I can not live without my mobility.

O2 Active consistantly accessing GPRS, not LAN

Greetings,
Can anyone verify that this is correct or not as it seems to happen to me all the time. Not sure if it's my settings, though.
O2 Active : My XDAII is in the cradel, sync'd with my laptop. DSL connection, so we're surfin. Open anything on O2 Active on the phone and it dials GPRS!!!! If I surf to a normal web page, it goes through my USB link. Well, it used to. I messed up my XDA Work settings, but I'm working on getting that sorted. But it was fine last week, except that O2 Active INSISTS on going through GPRS.
I just want to know :
Money making scheme on O2's part
Or
I'm not configured properly?
in connections you have spc different networks often it comes with
your isp in your case o2
and
my work network
you can make as many as you like and choose which one you are using
it's the same thing if you have a pc which both have lan and a modem you have to spc which one you wish to use when accessing stuff outside your device
Cheers for yer reply but I don't think I changed any connection settings. But I'll try a cold-boot tomorrow and try it from the factory defaults
Cheers

o2 wap

Hi,
Im new to the site and the phone, just got an upgrade on it.
Im on the old Genie contracts so O2 wont allow me to use GPRS, does anyone know if theres a way round this? Also they told me I cant use wap on this phone, is this true?
Thank you
back in the day many cellphone operators offered wap over gsm
but i think that the operator have to support it just like with wap over grps
do people really use wap with their xda's btw ?
i never use it it's ugly and a horrible std. and when ones device can do normal html then why bother with wap ?
Obviously Id rather use GPRS but the phone just doesnt give me access to it (O2 have told me they have de-activated from there side, only way to get it is to change my contract which i dont want to do), so I have no alternative but to use WAP unless there is a way round the problem.
today wap use grps if they deactivated grps then i doubt you can find any way around that
however as i said then wap can also be made to use pure gsm and not use grps
but if the network operator dont support wap over gsm then there is no way around that
so you can look for wap settings for o2 without grps that is if they support that and try those settings
I was on the old Genie contract and you can't use GPRS or MMS (Which uses GPRS) without changing your contract.
You still however have the GSM connection using the telephone number : 915000 and the user and password being o2wap, this is a "Cellular Line" and will only be 9600bps but that is free on the old genie contract and will work for web and wap and email and msn.. its basically a slow net connection that routes through their servers (which seem to sometims compress images horrifically).
I've changed my contract as i wanted MMS and GPRS. If on the o2 Active screen you choose myxda and then connections you can choose GSM, but this sets up two connections one which is a wap number and one that is very slightly different that is a web number, neither of which are 915000 (probably due to when you're roaming) and the web number maybe chargable if they're picky.
If you setup what the XDA calls an ISP connectiong with the wap 915000 it works fine. However the ISP connection seems to be for Web connections and if you try to goto wsp:// in IE it says there's no connection present as i think its set to dial the work connection for wap usage. I've only had my phone for about a month and haven't really had a chance to get any furthur with this.
Good luck.
Hope that all helped.
Tristan
I have an O2 payg sim, I can connect to wap over gprs but I dont like wap, I use the gsm line to get full internet access for my 300 minutes free. It is very easy to setup and although it runs at only 9600 I am able to retrieve/send pop3 email and access all web sites. I delete all the autoconfig settings from connections before entering the gsm details.
I also have the old genie setup, and can both access wap and www etc using the original 915000 dial up free wap no. I am presuming you have the free message and free wap tarrif! If so I can give you the details if you pm me.
However you cant send or recieve mms messages still, you need to do this via the o2 site, when it bloomin works
Mitch
Thank you everyone for your help, this seems like a great community here
mitchellgunn, thats the same one I got, unlimited free wap and txting, Ive sent you a PM

getting prepay configurations to work on o2 is a pain in the a**, however you need your connection settings configured for the work network only and if you havent a connecting profile create one with the details that follow;
apn - payandgo.o2.co.uk
userid - payandgo
pwd - password
you also need to update proxy details for wap - 193.113.200.195
also bear in mind that you wont be able to connect to the internet directly, no email, skype, messenging, vpn access or other services except for basic wap browsing, it sucks but that's o2 and prepay... cheap and cheerful and not meant for these devices ;(

I could always get wap pages - at about 1 pence per page but can now get web pages using the above setting in the http box then chose port 8080 (instead of port 80) .
More information and sites to choose from but it seems extremely expensive ! !
I go on for a few minutes to see the latest news or football stories and it costs about one pound 50 pence for around 2 minutes !!
Does it have to be this expensive or is there a cheaper way of surfing - using a PAY AS YOU GO sim ??
