XDAII Power Plug Changed - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Hi , i wonder if any one else notice this but one of the changes they made to XDA II is the Power Plug :x , on the old XDA you can plug that to most of the NEW Nokia Mobiles car charger and it will work with you as a charger and you don't need to spend EXTRA money on buying a new CAR Charger that only work on XDA

But know you can use iPAQ one Not the whole thing, not iPAQ connector, just plug. That's what I am using for my XDA2 as a second power charger

XDA Syn and Charge Cable

I was wondering if a Sync and Charge cable for the XDA will work on the XDA II?
I didnt want to try it just in case!!
My bro is managing to use most of his original XDA stuff with his XDA II. However, I have a problem with a Boxwave Minisync'n'charge cable that's supposed to be for the XDA II but I suspect is a rebadged XDA 1 cable - it sync's OK from my laptop but won't charge. However, the cable works with their car charger fine, i.e. it charges the XDA II OK ... strange...
Steve.
I think the XDA II needs slightly higher charging voltage than the XDA I in order to charge. It's a happy coincidence that the 5V USB power is sufficient to charge the XDA I; the approved charger has slightly higher voltage but the USB voltage is close enough to charge the XDA I - it 's known to take longer to charge the XDA I via the USB than with a charger. So that's probably why you can sync but not charge the XDA II with the USB cable.
This is a little confusing as my XDA II charges whilst sitting in the cradle WITHOUT the power supply connected, yet won't charge via the Sync'n'Charge cable from the same USB port... Any thoughts?
Steve.
XDA1 cable can be used to sycnh an XDA2 without any problems. It will also charge the XDA2 battery as long as the XDA2 battery has at least %80 or more charge. I bought a new cable today that charges both XDA2 & XDA1. Don't know what the difference is internally but the shopkeeper tells me its to do with pin configuration on the connector. Hope this helps.
I've just tested an old XDA1 USB sync'n'charge lead (the one supplied by O2) on my XDA II and it's charging nicely! I too have heard that it's to do with a sublte difference in the pin connections...
Time to get the multimeter out I think!
steve.
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=4330
[email protected] seems to have figured it all out! Great work! Mystery revealed.
Thanks for the pointer - it was indeed the GND connections on pins 2&5 on the XDA II connector that were preventing the USB charging behaviour - I took the XDA I lead apart and the connections weren't there, so I clipped them on the new lead (don't you just love voiding the warranty!) and hey presto, the USB lead now charges!
Now all I need to do is check the lead on my car charing adapter...
Steve
Cool! Pity I bought a new charge/synch cable just today. Oh well, I guess I can still solder my old cable and have two! Thanks for the confirmation.
Sync n Charge Cable
Interesting thread, but I have a question...
I have a mini sync-n-charge cable that syncs fine and charges if the battery on the XDAII is not less that 80% - is that the best I can hope for from a charger off a PC's USB port or do I need to get my soldering iron out? I got the impression from the thred that the soldering iron was to cure a sync-n-charge cable that was not charging at all.

Car charger for xda2

Hi anyone can help me here,
I need to know what is the voltage and current for charging a xda2. I am looking at modifying a nokia phone car charger to charge my xda2. From what i have read, it the output 5V and 2A (i took this from the cradle) but can the current be lower than 2A to charge. Thanks.
I do not know how you could do this, but have you tried this?
http://www.pdamods.com/proddetail.asp?prod=XDACC
It is a car charger and sync cable in one, so looks like good value..
5-6V, 500 mA should do it.
Just take care you use the correct polarity on the connector.

Why bother? Standard O2 USB sunc cable is only £12 from eXpansys and will charge the XDA from any powered USB port (eg your laptop/desktop) and you can buy generic cig lighter USB adapters for about £8. No risk, no hassle

Because there are always people who like to experiment.
And why throw something old away if it can be adapted for something new with minimal effort?
Good answer!!

Yes it can. All the old XDA stuff was only 1A. A USB port (powered without external power) is in the region of 500ma.
The only thing with lowering the current is that tha XDA2 is sensetive to discharge.i.e. less than 25% battery power and it wont charge via USB!!
Hope this helps.

Thanks all for the help. I think my only answer to not spending the dollar is more towards wire management. My current charger wire is retractable and when i am not using it, it retracts back and keep the dahboard clean & neat. As i charge my BT and also xda2 in my car, the number of wires sticking out is quite messy. Not sure if all has the same problem but it's just me wanting to be neat.

Hi Pete... Well... i don't think this is the case... pls look at this post
... i've got the solution to the non-charge bug... the XDA II will charge regardless of the battery level...

IPAQ Accessories with XDA II

Before I dust off my Volt meter, can anyone advise whether I can use my cradle, PSU and PC to IPAQ USB cable, Cigarette charger etc with my XDA II. The accessories belonged to a IPAQ 5450 which was stolen and would be useful if compatible with XDA II. PSU appears to be, but less clear with other accessories. TIA David
The ipaq and the xda/xda2 are wired differently, however I have heard of a cable that will convert the lines and allow the use of certain ipaq accessories, alternatively you could do make one using the pin out info on this site. You can damage your xda if you plug an ipaq power lead into it.
Any update on this cable? Anyone know where I can get 1? I've heard it talked about a lot but I cant find 1 anywhere....
If any of your iPAQ accessories have the plug in dongle then just throw away the iPAQ dongle and replace it with an XDA II dongle (one came in your kit) as the voltage and current settings are the same only the connections in the actual USB dongle are different.
I'm using the AC charger and car charger from my iPAQ H550 (now sold) and they work fine. I also bought a couple of extra XDA II dongles so now I dont have to swap the one from my XDA II kit anymore.
I don't thing you can use the cradle or the sync charge USB unit as they will have fixed wiring and not sorth the effort of trying to modify.

Ebay seller to avoid

I have been after a car charger for my Exec and as O2 dont sell one i searched ebay for one. There are loads on there so bought one and it was deliverd in 2 days. But it dont work (the charger has a sticker on it saying its for motorola v3) I have emailed the seller 3 times and he wont reply. I will be reporting him to ebay. But i wanted to warn you all to avoid the seller by the ebay user name of siennacommunications.
If anyone out there has bought a car charger for thier exec then i would like to know where you bought it thanks.
I got my car charger from gpsforless.co.uk
www.dsldevelopments.co.uk
is the website of a chap on here called Bryson. He's a Brodit distributor and in fact I got my passive cradle from him. I even later bought a proper USB charger from there, both work a treat.
Cheers

Blackberry charger works
hi, I too fell into the ebay trap. So I shopped around and bought a Blackberry in car charger from vodaphone shop for £10. works a treat and doesn't look cheap.
Hope that helps
Re: Blackberry charger works
The car chargers from Orange shops @ 9.99, intended for the SPV C500 / SPV C550 / SPV M500 / SPV C600, also work fine (they're HTC devices, after all).

I tried the blackberry charger from O2 but it didnt seem to work correctly i.e it took around 5 to 10 mins before it started to charge, if at all. So i took it back and one of the O2 staff that gave me a refund said that they shouldnt of sold it to me.
I think i will try the one from Orange, because like you said it is a HTC device. And if there were any problems then at least i could get my money back.
BTW that twat from ebay still wont get in touch with me for a refund.
Universal Charger
Got my accessories from www.gpsmidlands.co.uk.

Motorola V3 charger
-----------But it dont work (the charger has a sticker on it saying its for motorola v3)------------
Hi, I have an i-mate Jasjar and a Motorola V3, and I can use the V3 charger with the Jasjar, the only problem is that the V3 charger has an output of 550mA and the Jasjar charger has (should have) 1000mA.
The only way I managed to charge my Jasjar with the V3 charger is to power it off with the button, closing the lid with the Jasjar in Portrait mode and plugging the V3 charger in to the mini USB port of the Jasjar, you should see the charging led of the Jasjar (in UR case O2 EXEC) turn on Ambar it will take about 5 seconds.
Hope this helps
I swapped the curly cable from my Brodit Active cradle for a regular USB cable with a cigarette light/USB adapter, but it didn't work at first. For some reason pin 4 (which isn't normally wired up in a 4pin to 5 pin plug) had to be connected to pin 5. That might be the problem you are suffering from with the non-Exec/HTC cables.
Cheers,
Steve.
o2 car charger
just seen an o2 car charger in the o2 shop today price 14.99
Ive just ordered a hollux slim gps, a mount/cradle from dsldevelopments and a cigerette lighter to 2x usb port adapter from ebay. Only just ordered, waiting for everythign to come at the moment. The adapter is just a cigerette lighter with 2x full size usb ports on back of it, rated at 5v/7.2A, im assuming I can use the supplied usb cable that come with the exec and plug it into this to charge? (along with the gps at same time).

No, that's the point I was making - that configuration didn't work for me (or my colleague). The standard USB cable that has a USB A at one end and the USB B Mini at the other doesn't have pin 4 wired up in the Mini B, and so doesn't charge the Exec. I had to splice open my moulded plug, and put some solder on pins 4 and 5 to make it work.
Cheers,
Steve.
thx, i was vague (i hope ) by supplied cable, I mean the orginal exec-usb cable that came with the exec, not a generic one. The connectors on the cigerette lighter are full size usb A sockets, not plugs.

This is weird: I'm charging my Exec using a USB cable that came with my Canon camera and I keep the original Exec cable in my laptop bag for emergencies.
The Canon cable works fine and charges my Exec no probs. Wonder why. Maybe digicam cables also have the pin arrangement you describe?
I have now emailed the prick i bought the car charger from 5 times (ebay) and he is still ignoring me. Do you guys think i should post his email address on here so the UNIVERSAL community can have a go at the twat, or do you think i should cut my losses and move on. After all it is only £5.49 ive lost, but its the first time ive had this trouble from an ebay seller and its winding me up. WHY WONT HE RETURN MY EMAILS?
Leave a neg feedback and open a dispute case would be my advice.
try a guy on ebay 'solwareltd'
i have bought 3 cradles from him Arkon type with car charging systems built in and they worked a treat. Xda2s and Xda2i were perfect as windscreen mounted aswell as charging.
the Exec version i have to mount upside down as the mini USB is obxtruced by the side clamps but with 'rotate screen' option in TomTom this proved not to be a major problem at all.
Trustworthy and reliable i have found this guy to be and i recommend him to anyone whos after the car options for HTC devices.
thanks

The interesting thing is that regular USB cables work if plugged into a PC, it's just when they are plugged into these cigarette lighter adapter devices. My setup in the car actually has one of those with a two port USB hub plugged into it, and that required the mod I mentioned.
Cheers,
Steve.
Ebay seller has just emailed me (after 4 days and six emails to him) and admits he sent the wrong charger. He says he will send me a charger for C500 which he says will do the EXEC. I hope hes right for his sake!!

Cannot charge with car charger can any expert help please

Cannot charge xda executive with car charger ,when connected nothing happens light does not go red and also the connection icon does not show
make sure you dont have a faulty charger... dont know what you are using but i believe most people use the cigarette lighter to usb converter and then just use the usb cable... also have you tried pressing the on and off swith with the charger plugged in ?

car charger
Hi and thanks for the fast reply mate <yes it is a new charger from o2 .
No i have not tried the on off with the switch ,but would i still be able to charge when i am using tomtom
Whell....I use the cigarette lighter to usb adapter and usb cable ...at times i have had to quik press the on/off swith and at times plug and unplug the cable to get it to charge ....I used this as a "jump start" method only and no problems after that with using it whillst on charge (even with tomtom)..... other than that you may have a faulty charger or fag lighter to usb adapter (I never seen what a o2 one looks like).

Is the charger one especially for the exec?
I found normal usb chargers for phones like V3 or a GPS charger cant supply enough current to charge an exec.
hi, yeah i have had this problem, and so have a few of my clients, seems that not enough juice flows through the non branded versions, unlike from o2's or Brodits cables
I found that a regular USB cable into a Cigarette Lighter -> USB Socket didn't work until I joined pin 4 to pin 5 on the USB B Mini plug. All of the adapters I had that worked, but only powered (no data, i.e. Brodit and mains adapter) seemed to have pin 4 joined to pin 5 (pin 4 isn't normally connected at all). Once I did that mod it worked fine.
Cheers,
Steve.

Orange shops carry a charger intended for HTC manufactured devices (i.e. the SPV C500/M500 range) which works fine. Only £9.99.
