Wireless Modem in WM2003 - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

Why is there no wireless modem in "4.00.11 ENG WM2003"?
Can I install Wireless Modem to WM2003 manaually?
Any ideas are greatly appreciated. I really want to check my emails when I am off road.

any ideas?

i would search on google to see if you can download or buy the application
otherwise why do you need to make your xda a wireless modem to check your mail ?
if it's a pop/smpt mail server and your isp have it open you can check mail with your xda using gprs
thats what i do

if gprs costs $1 for 1KB, you cant really use it!
so, i wanna dial up to my ISP instead using gprs.
i checked google and could not find anything!

Code:
if gprs costs $1 for 1KB, you cant really use it!
WOW!!!! never heard about such extreme gprs prices
here it's around $2 pr 1MB

GPRS Price
Yeah, wow, GPRS is about £1 per 1Mb in the UK.
I guess thats a typo!

not a typo. i am in a little island in europe

is the price to talk equaly high ?
if not then it would prob be cheaper to shout 1's and 0's and transfer data that way
if you wanted to use the xda as a modem would that not be over gprs aswell ?
i know that you can use a gsm as a normal modem aswell but not all that many isp's support it
and at a higher price too i think

the talk price is fine. it's still higher than in many countries in europe, but i am okey with it.
so, i am planing on using my gsm phone to call to my isp. my isp allows that and my carier allows data tranfer over the phone capability.
what i am just missing is the software - wireless modem!

you could try and diasm a rom and pick out the files for vmodem if it works with 2003
otherwise i suppse you have to go back to 2002

cant get on the internet: Telfort simcard, Tmobile MDA2,help

I live in Holland. I have an Tmobile MDA2. It is simlock free. I have a contract with Telfort mobile phone company. (Telfort used to be O2 until O2 stopped operating in Holland). And I have my Telfort sim card in the MDA2.
But I can't get on the internet. And I cannot get settings from Telfort, (they say they don't support MDA's or Xda's anymore, and I can't get settings from Tmobile, unless I have a contract with them.
I'm stuck. I upgraded the MDA succesfully, to PPC 2003 SE with the "merged" upgrade from this site. Brilliant.
But I don't know how to get on the internet, or Email, etc.
Is there a way I can get on the internet?. Any settings or ideas please?
Don't know if this is too obvious, if you want to connect to the internet mobily (so not through ActiveSync) and not with a SD-WiFi card, you're probably referring to GPRS, wich uses your GSM antenna.
To be able to connect to a GPRS network, you need to have a GPRS account.
So, do you have a GPRS account with your Telfort account?
I'm also in the netherlands with a T-Mobile MDAII but use it with my T-Mobile acount that supports GPRS. It works fine (but is waaaay to expensive..)
Internet using MDAII
Just make a connection using Cellulair Line using the same ISP you use for your home-pc..
The speed is fair enough and will cost you the same as if you were just calling someone.
cellulair how?
thanks for your answer - I looked for Cellulair on google and nothing came up. Do you have more details or links so I can find it, please?
cellulair - its alright I've found the web site
cellulair - its alright I've found the web site - duh - it was obvious - www.cellulair.com. sorry to have bothered you - thanks again
Okay, 64,000 dollar question!
I have programmed my XDA to get on the internet using O2 GPRS for FREE (I have no contract and no credit) stay on the net 24/7!
Anyone know how to do this on a T-Mobile SIM?
Cheers
This forum rocks, such a great bunch of willing helpers
PS.
If you goto this link http://datasafe.port5.com at most you'll lose $4 but you might make a fortune! It's just a bit of fun guys

dialup access

I'm wanting to set up dial up access to my work's internet provider (telstra). My phone is an O2 XDA IIs connected thru Optus, but that's not really that relevant to my problem...
I set up the connection properly but when I tried to connect it says 'no modem at above number'.
I know there are other causes for this message, but mine is simple:
Optus want me to pay extra money to be able to use a 'data line'. And because it would seem SO much more expensive to do things that way, well hey, I might as well just use GPRS, yes? NO! I've got a cap at $79 for $500 worth of calls, and this dialup number is a local call... so I could theoretically be on the internet for hours on my PDA, but Optus don't want me to do that.
Now I tried calling the number normally using the mobile and I heard beeps etc.
So my question is: What software can I use to translate that into a dialup connection? Surely there must be *some* way around this problem...
Has anyone else overcome this?
Same problem here
Sorry I don't have a solution, but I have the exact same problem. I get the same error, but I can dial the modem number using the phone and it connects.
I'm on Rogers in Canada with an XDA IIs
Any info anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

t-mobile's Web'n'Walk tariff with the MDA PRO

Hi all,
I bought a MDA PRO on the t-mobile tariff webnwalk that give 40MB of web browsing per month. The adverts and customer services specifically say web browsing or internet browsing.
I saw in a post the other day, someone saying that that is only for GPRS and NOT UMTS (3G).. Now is this true? The prebuilt mda pro doesn't give you the option to choose one over the other and there are no tariff plan details that say how much 3G data would cost..
P
Hi,
i am a german t-mobile customer and here it doesn´t matter if you are connected using gprs or 3g.
Would make absolutly no sense, because the device automatically switches to the fastet network available and it is not possible to use gprs when i am in a area where 3g is available.
The only important factor for the bill is the volume.

You can change this behaviour by modifying the registry keys.
Yes, I am on web n walk in the UK and it's both.
40mb / month gives you just over a meg a day.
Now, if you buy/obtain the pocket MSN software, then you get your hotmail back (woohoo) but MSN messenger sucks bandwidth like there's no tomorrow - nearly a meg in a few hours.
Agile messenger doesn't use anywhere near as much data, and just in case the bandwidth usage was related to 3G, I went into the phone settings and where you have an 'auto' set for networks, choose GSM and it sticks to only GPRS. I later tested MSN messenger on GPRS and it still sucks data like a mofo.
For general purpose use, GPRS is fine and obviates the issue where the software/OS pratts about switching between networks. Web browsing is fine with images switched off and all is good again.
I am currently using about 3-400k/day which means I will need to have a blow-out web session at the end of the month to use my entitlement (which is better than having to pay excess data charges cos I sucked too much data over the month).
End result is the same - I am connected to MSN through agile and keep in touch with friends during the day, and I get hotmail integration to the messaging apps.
All slightly OT to this thread, but I thought I would share my experience in case it helps.

Great line, made me laugh  Looks like I should give Agile a go then. Didn't realise it was lighter than MSN.
And back on topic, I'm not on Web 'n' Walk yet (really should get round to switching...) but I spoke to a lovely lady at T-Mobile for ages trying to figure out which tarrif would suit me best, and at some point in the conversation she definitely told me that 3G data is charged at exactly the same rate as GPRS data, and the 40 meg allowance covers both.
Excellent!
We'll I've now done the registry fix to t-mobile Internet option to make sure it really is ALWAYS ON.
I'm in Spain next week and how I can use GPRS from there. You know which partner networks I should try it on and how much it'll cost me?
I've tried t-mobile and they give me different answers from 'you can't use gprs out in Spain' to 'it'll cost you at least £7 p MB'
??
Had my stag do in Barcelona earlier this year and I was connected to Movistar for the weekend. GPRS rates were (from memory) about £7.50 per Mb which is what T-Mobile's standard GPRS rates were at the time (not sure what they are now?) I was already over my allowance for the month, so I dont know if my allowance would have been used up instead of having to pay the higer price (doubt it though!)

Ok, it´s possible. But why the hell should i change ?
- Superbowl
No Ones talking about changing.
The point is I wanted to make sure that using UMTS and GPRS doesn't change the billing.
Also, whe you go to another country you have to Roam and I also wanted to know how much that would cost me using gprs? (oh In Spain..) 8)

I used T-Mob roaming in Australia via other cell companies and it cost me 7.50/meg I think.
And, weirdest of all, even tho I had T-Mob GPRS setup for the UK, I didn't change settings, it just worked over there (or appeared to). That was on a SE P910i tho.
That's damn expensive. How can they justify it? It's not like voice calls where you're paying for the foreign country to the uk and then from the uk to where-ever..You're just using the local network to hop onto their gprs network and the web...
It's about thime this planet got to grips with modern technology..Seem that the public think further ahead than the companies...
£7.50 Per Meg seems like the general consensus then.
Coincidentally (or maybe not?) that's how much T-Mobile charge even in the UK for either PAYG customers, or contract customers with no bolt-ons. (unless they've updated the costs recently)
As for the settings working abroad, GPRS connects via an access point such as "general.t-mobile.com" which is the same the world over. Much like a web address. Each network operator just monitors the traffic to your device, and bills accordingly. Obviously if your abroad, the local network operator bills your home operator and they mark it up 10000000% and bill you in turn.
(At least that's how I understand it)
Call 150 and the guy will tell you that it's for GPRS only. I think he might not have the proper authority of saying it, but then again, as long as this guy is a quotable source i.e. 150-guy; so the fact stands until someone made a 150 call and tell us otherwise
is there only way to get the number of MB currently downloaded with a *#XX# shortcuts ?
same for the number of minutes.. it's a bit pain in the bottom to have to call 150 (especially when you get the help yourself options)

As I said before, the person I spoke to said otherwise. Conflicting information from the 150 crew then...I'll have to check through my new bill carefully once I've switched to Web 'n' Walk 200, but 3G data has never been charged differently to GPRS on my current tarrif (Relax 200 + 55Mb Data add-on).

I also have web'n'walk ('flat rate' only for GPRS) so i dont want to use UMTS.
What do you have to change in the registry to use GPRS when UMTS is available??
There is no need to force the MDA Pro to use GPRS on T-Mobile. With the web 'n' walk tarrifs the 40mb is for use on BOTH UTMS (3G) or GPRS.
I can confirm this as I myself am on web 'n' walk 200.
I only ever use 3G on Web'n'Walk 200 (cause I live and work in London), and I haven't been charged for my first 40 Megs yet so no-one on this tarrif should worry!
If you are concerned, sign up on the T-Mobile website for "My T-Mobile". I've finally gotten around to doing this myself, and now I can track my spending easily (even from my JasJar, if I so desire) and change my account options etc, without having to go through the Service Centre every time.
And for those people who have to pay for calls to 150 because they're on a webshop account, you needn't ring 150 ever again (probably!)
Maybe i have a different web'n'walk. I'm from holland and here we have 'pocket internet total' 9,50/month and no time or mb limit. One problem, the t-mobile site says its only for GPRS!
But there is a chance that UMTS is also inclusif, and t-mobile just forgot to mansion that, because i have no charges for umts sofar(MyTmobile)...

Tmobile unlimited GPRS

I have the new Tmobile unlimited (2gb) GPRS bundle. Does anyone know whether I can use the wizard as a modem with my laptop and the data transfer will be included within the 2gig limit?
No its prohibited in terms and conditions unless its the pro option.

on the other hand - i'm curious how T-Mobile can determine if connection is established whether directly from Wizard or when Wizard is a modem for another device...
i'm going to get Flext + W'n'W deal as soon as I get back to UK around july, hopefully with MDA Vario II
T-mobile can tell the type of phone you're using. I'm using the T-mobile Blackberry Internet plan for 19.99 on my Cingular 8125. When i called in the Rep said, he sees i'm using a HTC device, I didn't tell him which device cause if i said it was a pocket pc he would of switched me to the T-mobile totalweb for 29.99. but anyway t-mobile knows what phone or computer that is being used.

Actually.. yes you CAN use it as a modem. I am an employee of T-Mobile in the Dallas area. Our ROMS come natively with the modem link program. All you do to use it as a modem is enable modem link then set up a dial up connection on your pc. The driver is on the T-Mobile install CD. Select the HTC usb modem and put wap.voicestream.com as the access point. The dial up number is *99# with no username or password. As long as you are paying for the total internet package you are not violating the ToS. If you have any questions, PM me or call me at work (its my job!.)

Mind if I ask you a T-Mo question?
Can I use BBC on my MDA with a POP account on T-Mo's BB network? Before the fall upgrade it worked with my SE P910a, after the upgrade nada.

Best Network for PAYG Surfing (noob with m3100 hermes)

Hi all , just got a spv m3100 and am gonna upgrade to WM6 and unlock the SIM/CID , now then.....
In the UK which is the cheapest/best data provider on PAYG , anyone offer free browsing on evenings/weekends? Do all use HSPDA?
How do i go about setting up 3g or even where to buy a 3g sim?
Also WIFI is free if i connect to my own wireless router isnt it?
Sorry for being so completely thick , and i have googled around for data tariffs btw but cant really work out half the hidden charges etc
i dunno about cheapest/best data provider, but for sure noone offers free evenings.
3g service is a capability built into your phone, and a "3g" sim card is just a normal sim card. there really is no such thing.
Wifi IS most definitely free if you connect to your own router.
Thanks for the responce , I know Orange do free evenings....
"Get up to 1000 free texts to anyone every month
and free evening mobile Internet browsing"
http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/sim/payg_sim
Apparently the most you can spend is 1 pound a day (on most providers) , is this for 3G as well as / or only for GPRS. And are there any hidden charges?
How have you guys found browsing on your PPC's/PDA's etc?
Also which provider should i choose , who provides the best service in your opinion?
cheers
roy
as i understand it, 100p = 1 pound, right?
It shows that each area/region code has different going rate.
It seems like a reasonable deal, and orange i believe has 2g services (EDGE)
I think it says that the REGISTRATION fee is 1 pound, and the most you will end up spending for data is 2 pounds a day. This works like any prepaid card, you add money, you call people, money gets taken off the card.
It seems like a good deal, but orange has a history of sneaky language.
For example, their "Unlimited Data" actually mean "At 3 gb, we start watching you"

I think the 3 network is the best , 5 pound per month for 2 g data . it is very good at the moment , I use it for some months and the speed is ok so if you want to use the net on the go you should try to give it a go
buy a 3 simcard
install cap file on your spv m3100 which is all setting for internet
click start/setting/connection
click connection/manage existing connection
click Proxy setting/advanced
stick this network uses aproxy server to connect to the internet
click wap under server enter 192.168.71.35 under port 9201
click ok 5 times
topup 10 pound PAYG and then use your spv 3100 go to http://mobile.three.co.uk/pc/Live/pcreator/live/mwsun
go to my 3
from there you to buy internet add-on 5 pound p/m
you should only go to internet after bouth add-on because if you didnt they will charge very expensitive
