Hi all , just got a spv m3100 and am gonna upgrade to WM6 and unlock the SIM/CID , now then.....
In the UK which is the cheapest/best data provider on PAYG , anyone offer free browsing on evenings/weekends? Do all use HSPDA?
How do i go about setting up 3g or even where to buy a 3g sim?
Also WIFI is free if i connect to my own wireless router isnt it?
Sorry for being so completely thick , and i have googled around for data tariffs btw but cant really work out half the hidden charges etc
i dunno about cheapest/best data provider, but for sure noone offers free evenings.
3g service is a capability built into your phone, and a "3g" sim card is just a normal sim card. there really is no such thing.
Wifi IS most definitely free if you connect to your own router.
Thanks for the responce , I know Orange do free evenings....
"Get up to 1000 free texts to anyone every month
and free evening mobile Internet browsing"
http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/sim/payg_sim
Apparently the most you can spend is 1 pound a day (on most providers) , is this for 3G as well as / or only for GPRS. And are there any hidden charges?
How have you guys found browsing on your PPC's/PDA's etc?
Also which provider should i choose , who provides the best service in your opinion?
cheers
roy
as i understand it, 100p = 1 pound, right?
It shows that each area/region code has different going rate.
It seems like a reasonable deal, and orange i believe has 2g services (EDGE)
I think it says that the REGISTRATION fee is 1 pound, and the most you will end up spending for data is 2 pounds a day. This works like any prepaid card, you add money, you call people, money gets taken off the card.
It seems like a good deal, but orange has a history of sneaky language.
For example, their "Unlimited Data" actually mean "At 3 gb, we start watching you"

I think the 3 network is the best , 5 pound per month for 2 g data . it is very good at the moment , I use it for some months and the speed is ok so if you want to use the net on the go you should try to give it a go
buy a 3 simcard
install cap file on your spv m3100 which is all setting for internet
click start/setting/connection
click connection/manage existing connection
click Proxy setting/advanced
stick this network uses aproxy server to connect to the internet
click wap under server enter 192.168.71.35 under port 9201
click ok 5 times
topup 10 pound PAYG and then use your spv 3100 go to http://mobile.three.co.uk/pc/Live/pcreator/live/mwsun
go to my 3
from there you to buy internet add-on 5 pound p/m
you should only go to internet after bouth add-on because if you didnt they will charge very expensitive

i am recently deciding whether to part with my cash and buy a xda 2. First of all are they worth it? Also would i be able to use a pay as you go sim card from a samsung v200? which does have gprs as it has o2 active i was just wondering as i do not really want to go to a pay monthly plan
thnaks in advance
How much you paying for it? It will work with the sim you have as long as its an O2 phone, if not you can unlock it for free.
it will probably be £270 unlocked and yes i have a o2 sim card
You won't be able to take advantage of the full internet GPRS, I had no end of trouble trying to connect to MSN and websites outside of 02 active, even after numerous phone calls to 02, they never got this sorted out.
As far as I know, on a pay as you go simcard, you cannot benefit from full internet access with o2.
ye but is'nt there a way of changing the setting or something i heard you can do that to make it go on the internet
well can you plzz tell me so i can decide whether to get one
I have a PAYG vodafone in my xda2. Ive only just got the phone and still havent worked out how to get internet access on it. I downloaded vodafone's 'connect me' software and that buggered my actviesync connection so i had to uninstall it....
I would like to say that yes this is very possible.
I had my old XDA I and XDA II on pay and go with O2 I had full internet and full GPRS though it took alot of time to get the settings but I managed it. the only annoying this is when you send a text it tells you your credit about 5 times. I have now got the XDA IIi and the sim also works with this.
conclusion is that yes it can be done and its not hard either. just change the ISP and work connection
cheers can to share the setting for the xda 2 if you know them as if i get one i might need them trying to get my parents to pay half for my birthday present lol
I paid USD $600 for O2 XDA II 2 months ago.
But it's worth.
I'm using it in programming Pocketpc application, capture Discovery from my PC then copy it to my SD 512 MB and view in PocketPC when go to sleep, listen MP3s, use softwares...
It's a nice XDA man !

There used to be a way, by changing the Proxy settings, but this does not work for newer SIM's.
O2 PAYG SIM's less than 18 months old (I think) can only access WAP via GPRS.
Cost: Expect to pay £200-£250 for a good condition XDA II on Ebay (just got £235 for mine, but some have gone for as little as £180)
well my sim card is from a samsung v200 which was brought new about november 2003 which has gprs on it, but now am not sure although i suppose if it does not work i should be able to pick on up easily from a store somewhere
Anyone have the Voda settings for GPRS/MMS? I'm on O2 and the reception around here is hit and miss, but Voda is always spot-on. I've a PAYG card that's data-enabled, I just need the settings for the XDAII.
Hi all,
I bought a MDA PRO on the t-mobile tariff webnwalk that give 40MB of web browsing per month. The adverts and customer services specifically say web browsing or internet browsing.
I saw in a post the other day, someone saying that that is only for GPRS and NOT UMTS (3G).. Now is this true? The prebuilt mda pro doesn't give you the option to choose one over the other and there are no tariff plan details that say how much 3G data would cost..
P
Hi,
i am a german t-mobile customer and here it doesn´t matter if you are connected using gprs or 3g.
Would make absolutly no sense, because the device automatically switches to the fastet network available and it is not possible to use gprs when i am in a area where 3g is available.
The only important factor for the bill is the volume.

You can change this behaviour by modifying the registry keys.
Yes, I am on web n walk in the UK and it's both.
40mb / month gives you just over a meg a day.
Now, if you buy/obtain the pocket MSN software, then you get your hotmail back (woohoo) but MSN messenger sucks bandwidth like there's no tomorrow - nearly a meg in a few hours.
Agile messenger doesn't use anywhere near as much data, and just in case the bandwidth usage was related to 3G, I went into the phone settings and where you have an 'auto' set for networks, choose GSM and it sticks to only GPRS. I later tested MSN messenger on GPRS and it still sucks data like a mofo.
For general purpose use, GPRS is fine and obviates the issue where the software/OS pratts about switching between networks. Web browsing is fine with images switched off and all is good again.
I am currently using about 3-400k/day which means I will need to have a blow-out web session at the end of the month to use my entitlement (which is better than having to pay excess data charges cos I sucked too much data over the month).
End result is the same - I am connected to MSN through agile and keep in touch with friends during the day, and I get hotmail integration to the messaging apps.
All slightly OT to this thread, but I thought I would share my experience in case it helps.

Great line, made me laugh  Looks like I should give Agile a go then. Didn't realise it was lighter than MSN.
And back on topic, I'm not on Web 'n' Walk yet (really should get round to switching...) but I spoke to a lovely lady at T-Mobile for ages trying to figure out which tarrif would suit me best, and at some point in the conversation she definitely told me that 3G data is charged at exactly the same rate as GPRS data, and the 40 meg allowance covers both.
Excellent!
We'll I've now done the registry fix to t-mobile Internet option to make sure it really is ALWAYS ON.
I'm in Spain next week and how I can use GPRS from there. You know which partner networks I should try it on and how much it'll cost me?
I've tried t-mobile and they give me different answers from 'you can't use gprs out in Spain' to 'it'll cost you at least £7 p MB'
??
Had my stag do in Barcelona earlier this year and I was connected to Movistar for the weekend. GPRS rates were (from memory) about £7.50 per Mb which is what T-Mobile's standard GPRS rates were at the time (not sure what they are now?) I was already over my allowance for the month, so I dont know if my allowance would have been used up instead of having to pay the higer price (doubt it though!)

No Ones talking about changing.
The point is I wanted to make sure that using UMTS and GPRS doesn't change the billing.
Also, whe you go to another country you have to Roam and I also wanted to know how much that would cost me using gprs? (oh In Spain..) 8)

I used T-Mob roaming in Australia via other cell companies and it cost me 7.50/meg I think.
And, weirdest of all, even tho I had T-Mob GPRS setup for the UK, I didn't change settings, it just worked over there (or appeared to). That was on a SE P910i tho.
That's damn expensive. How can they justify it? It's not like voice calls where you're paying for the foreign country to the uk and then from the uk to where-ever..You're just using the local network to hop onto their gprs network and the web...
It's about thime this planet got to grips with modern technology..Seem that the public think further ahead than the companies...
£7.50 Per Meg seems like the general consensus then.
Coincidentally (or maybe not?) that's how much T-Mobile charge even in the UK for either PAYG customers, or contract customers with no bolt-ons. (unless they've updated the costs recently)
As for the settings working abroad, GPRS connects via an access point such as "general.t-mobile.com" which is the same the world over. Much like a web address. Each network operator just monitors the traffic to your device, and bills accordingly. Obviously if your abroad, the local network operator bills your home operator and they mark it up 10000000% and bill you in turn.
(At least that's how I understand it)
Call 150 and the guy will tell you that it's for GPRS only. I think he might not have the proper authority of saying it, but then again, as long as this guy is a quotable source i.e. 150-guy; so the fact stands until someone made a 150 call and tell us otherwise
is there only way to get the number of MB currently downloaded with a *#XX# shortcuts ?
same for the number of minutes.. it's a bit pain in the bottom to have to call 150 (especially when you get the help yourself options)

As I said before, the person I spoke to said otherwise. Conflicting information from the 150 crew then...I'll have to check through my new bill carefully once I've switched to Web 'n' Walk 200, but 3G data has never been charged differently to GPRS on my current tarrif (Relax 200 + 55Mb Data add-on).

I also have web'n'walk ('flat rate' only for GPRS) so i dont want to use UMTS.
What do you have to change in the registry to use GPRS when UMTS is available??
There is no need to force the MDA Pro to use GPRS on T-Mobile. With the web 'n' walk tarrifs the 40mb is for use on BOTH UTMS (3G) or GPRS.
I can confirm this as I myself am on web 'n' walk 200.
I only ever use 3G on Web'n'Walk 200 (cause I live and work in London), and I haven't been charged for my first 40 Megs yet so no-one on this tarrif should worry!
If you are concerned, sign up on the T-Mobile website for "My T-Mobile". I've finally gotten around to doing this myself, and now I can track my spending easily (even from my JasJar, if I so desire) and change my account options etc, without having to go through the Service Centre every time.
And for those people who have to pay for calls to 150 because they're on a webshop account, you needn't ring 150 ever again (probably!)
Maybe i have a different web'n'walk. I'm from holland and here we have 'pocket internet total' 9,50/month and no time or mb limit. One problem, the t-mobile site says its only for GPRS!
But there is a chance that UMTS is also inclusif, and t-mobile just forgot to mansion that, because i have no charges for umts sofar(MyTmobile)...

This has not been my experience when I used Messenger on my old imate JAM - must test this, cheers. Is Agile Messenger better in other ways too?
Hi
Thought i would share my findings about O2 and payandgo sim cards. Several people have provided me with gprs settings all of which seem to work but don't fully then meschle (cheers) explained things.
O2 payandgo gprs access is restricted and will allow things like basic browsing but not msn email checking. i have phoned them to confirm this.
So if you are on O2 payandgo trying to get the best out of your wizard or indeed any xda then... sod then off and go for Orange!
orange have a simular deal but better. 10quid min topup, 300texts something else and 1meg gprs every month! if you add a gprs option it costs £4 from your monthly £10. so every month you would get 300textsa £6 to spend on calls and a stonking 5meg gprs.
the sims only cost £1 to order from the orange website, i have tested it all working getting your O2 number changed to orange is dead easy and only takes a week.
the hours i have spent messing with O2 gprs!!!!!! thought i would try to save other people from doing the same.
Get an Orange PayAndGo Sim card for free...
http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/simevent/film
...and you have to enter a code at the bottom which is "film" without the quotes
Note: this is just to get the simcard for free! Everything else RJWebb has mentioned above regarding monthly topup still applies!
i did the same, moved from o2 to orange.
Im on the free text top up rate (which you should ask for as they dont automatically put you on it).
I always top up around £30 in the month, convert £8 to 8MB GPRS web access (2 x £4 chunks), i get 1000 free texts(for topping up £30) and 1MB free GPRS, making 9MB total
The other £22 is calls and extra texts (which I buy at £5 for 150 so 3p each)
Another thing to do if you are new is call up to get picture messaging to be activated and they give you 30 free pic messages for one month only.
Highly recommended
The only 'problem' i have is if i send or receive a picture message so connect to the orange mms server, I cannot access gprs web then until I do a soft reset. The same happens in reverse too, if I have been on the web/msn/whatever I cannot then send or receive a pic message until I do a soft reset. I didnt get this problem on o2 and havent been able to uncover the reason for this.
does anyone have a cab file for the orange gprs and mms settings? i'm gonna move to orange from o2 cheers
Rob
http://www.modaco.com/Orange_GPRS_settings_for_XDA_Mini_S-t236403.html
I couldnt get any one particular cab set of settings to work, i think i installed one and then just tweaked it until it 'happened'
Thanks for the cab file with a few changes it works
real internet access at last cheers guys!
R
o2 benefits
but swapping to orange u lose your 200 anytime any network min plus 1 meg download if 300 text
all costing me just 10.00, so I can't decide why 30.00 on pay as you go what benefit . one question if u swop your no. from a sim do both sims then have the same no.ie any one can phone me and catch me on either sim on one no.
Hello,
Can anyone tell me if on the exec when browsing sites you can hear the music on myspace profiles?
also what is the best way to get cheap internet as i will only be buying the exec for mobile internet so need something as cheap as poss! the phone is a bonus
thanks
anyone? please
I haven't tried this (yet) so can't comment on quality. 3 pay as you go has the option to buy a months unlimited internet for £5. I don't know if that means data or is specific to port 80 access only.
Ian
I think its possible and I know internet radio is possible with the tmcp player. even youtube.
Hey,
The Exec does not take 3 'contract' phone sim cards does it? So that kicks that £5 per month internet thing?
oh yes it does. ive unlocked mine and have a "3" sim inside it, i get unlimited internet for £5/mo on payg
to answer the other question, some ports are blocked but personally i have a vpn running across "3" mobile network to get access to all services, even voip
it also works as a modem, which your not supposed to be able to do, but it works
Very interesting Phycho.
At the risk of asking the "bleedin' obvious" is that with WM6?
I would be interested in a run-down on the settings for "3" as I am just in the process of purchase from them.
yes. just use the network config wizard set to 3, it just works.
Had a good look here and was wondering if anyone has managed a to get a good deal on Touch HD on T Mobile in the UK by upgrading.
My current contract ends in a week, and have a Kaiser at the mo, all that appears to be on the TMob site is the G1 and I dont fancy that!
Would be prepared to use another operator if necessary.
Thanks
After looking around for many weeks, this is easily the best deal I could find anywhere... and you can also add on the 500MB of internet access a month for £5. Unfortunately you have to deal with phones4u...
http://www.phones4u.co.uk/shop/shop_contract_details.asp?ItemKey=233801&MPItemKey=250428&NetKey=4
It works out at £25 a month, with the phone free (+ you get the 8GB memory card)
I got the phone last week on t-mobile from mobilephonesdirect.co.uk. It's £35 a month on an 18 month contract with 700 mins, unlimited text, unlimited data and the phone for free.
AND! Mobilephonesdirect.co.uk supply the phone already unlocked and unbranded!
AND, it also arrives the next day, unlike some suppliers
Just had a look at http://www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk/Brands/HTC/b509/n447/p3185.aspx
I am currently with T-Mobile on a Flext contract paying £25 per month which includes unlimited web browsing. My contract is up in 2 weeks and I currently have an Omnia but was thinking of going for the HD and maybe sell it on if I didn't think it was any better.
I am a bit confused, T-Mobile don't have the Touch HD on their own website (they only have the Diamond & Touch Pro). How does it work that another website can sell phones using their contracts.
If I bought from mobilephonesdirect.co.uk could I just do an upgrade through them rather than T-Mobile. The Combi 30 offer looks nice (£35 incl web browsing) however it asks you to phone 0845 470 4000 for latest Upgrade price. Is this liable to cost me more or less and if so what is the reason?
If an upgrade price costs more, what options do I have. Ideally I'd like to stay with T-Mobile but I will go to another network if the price is right. Ideally I want to pay as little as possible for the phone but require unlimited data/web browsing.
Please help
T-Mobile don't have the Touch HD on their website because Orange have the network-exclusive supply deal with HTC for the UK.
However, that doesn't mean that the HD is incompatible with T-Mobile, so third-party suppliers such as Phones4U, CPW or the sites linked-to in this thread are able to sell the phones on whatever contract they want, so long as they can agree a price with the network.
Cheers, was looking to buy this on O2 as I thought that was the best deal...currently using Kaiser on T-Mobile and my 18 month contract is up. Just bought a spanking new Touch HD from http://www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk/...447/p3185.aspx thanks!!!
I really wanted the HD on T-Mobile too, so I got a Vario 4 (Touch Pro) and sold it on eBay for £450, used the money to buy a HD and now I'm happily using it on T-Mobile.
but does T-Mobile not restrict you so that you cannot use your phone as a modem , cannot use skype and cannot use IM (msn yahoo gtalk etc)
i just read it here http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/services/uk/fairuse/#Combiwebnwalk
"You'll need a compatible phone and internet coverage. Remember that you can only use web'n'walk in the UK and you can't use your phone as a modem or use web'n'walk for peer to peer file sharing, instant messaging (except if you have a Sidekick) or making internet phone calls." Tmobile website
Not really...I've used as a modem now and again, used MSN and now I've got Android on my Kaiser, I've tried Meebo too. Connected to Skype too, not actually tried a call yet. Never had a warning or anything either. Guess if you were abusing the amount of data then maybe they could tell?
I use my HD as a modem with web'n'walk basic, works well no problem. You can try using MSN I'm testing it out now and it seems to be working dispite T-Mobile stopping it when used as a modem or when used on other phones.
Best deal I could find was the mobilephonesdirect one. Only problem I've had with T-mobile is that their web proxy blocks some ports (like the one I'm using for webguide from my HTPC). Easily solved by removing the use of the proxy altogether.
For information: The proxy settings are under "Settings" -> "Connections" tab -> "Connections" -> "T-Mobile Internet", "Manage existing connections" -> "Proxy Settings" tab. Untick the option "This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet".
I'd guess that not going via the proxy may increase overall data usage, but my first bill hasn't shown any anomalies.

I've been doing this for the last 18 months on my TYTN II, as I had some connection issues, but never had any problems once removing the proxy.
I ordered yesterday morning, and it got delivered this morning at 9am! Excellent service especially on Saturday! Just that I was at f'ing work all day and now I can't get it till Monday now!! Arrggh!

If you read the terms and conditions of any of the web bundles offered by any of the networks, none of them include tethering usage.
True enough, a lot of people get away with it but if they work out that's what you're doing, they will charge you.
T-Mobile and Three also offer tethering bolt-ons which are specifically for using the phone as a modem.
As far as I know, with any of the other networks, your only option is to buy a separate USB modem/dongle.
Check out Expansys. If you dont see the plan you want just give them a call. Paid £334 for my HD sim free in December on TMobile Combi 15 +W&W. Tariff comes in at about £22 per month.
Obviously the lower the tariff the higher the cost of the handset.

Not quite, the literature says they will not charge but will restrict their service until you upgrade or reduce traffic. But if you take it easy you should be OK. For TMobile an extra £5 permits tethering an increases the allowance to 3GB.
I got mine on an Orange contract, via Lingsmobiles don;t forget free internet with a 10gb allowance (worth a tenner a month)
