ATTWS Radio Stack RA.20.10 vs TMO Radio Stack 6.4 - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

I have now tried both radio stacks in my ATTWS SX-56. I am on ATTWS service so this may make a difference and those that have TMO as their service provider may have a different experience.
The TMO stack does not keep the GPRS connection anywhere near as well as the ATTWS stack. It drops the connection quite frequently. Also, the signal strength is far lower and it tends to hunt for a signal that the ATTWS stack finds easily. Others can post their experience so that those considering changing their radio stack can make an intelligent decision.

Yes I believe the service makes a difference!
I'm on T-Mobile and my signal strength/GPRS connection is a lot better than it was with the AT&T radio stack. But I'm pretty sure the newer ROM has a lot to do with too.
Note: One should remove/disable both the T-Mobile Today Plug-in and the battery monitor, that should improve your performance.

Why would removing these help? Are ther particular files that are required to be deleted or is it just a registry entry?

I previously had the AT&T radio stack installed with 4.00.01 and later 4.00.05 WM2003PE on the T-Mobile network. It worked well, but occassionally the GPRS connection would remain dormant following a voice call. It appeared to remain connected, but would not send or receive data. I have since upgraded to the TMo 6.24 radio stack and 4.00.10 WM2003. My voice reception seems marginally better, as does the GPRS data speed, but the greatest improvement is that the GPRS connection seems more stable and becomes active again following voice connections.

4.00.10 doesn't have "G" indicator for GPRS

[Peter Poelman: subject was "To xda-developers"]
I am trying to figure out why the tmobile 4.00.10 ROM does not include the "G" GPRS notification which is seen in the title bar upon a GPRS link, which signifies being able to log onto the internet, and the "G" in the connectivity screen when you click on the Phone Meter. This "G" is seen in ppc2002, and the 4.00.05 ppc2003 ROM.
Do you know if this a registry key, a file, etc? If so, should I not be able to copy these files or enter the keys manually? I asume Tmobile disabled it for their service or something of the like. You help is great appreciated.
Not sure what happened but UP UP UP
Almost 50 people viewed this so far an no one has clue?
i discussed this in a different thread some weeks ago. i think t-mobile usa mask it, (as well as the roaming indicator), since they use other peoples networks, thus the network information is 'wrong' (to the un-educated user).
annoying really, I agree!
cheers...
..lance
Sorry didn't see it. I thought as much but if they can mask/disable it, couldn't we undo it? Must be a reg key or something. Maybe a patch?
I have tmobile service, using the latest tmobile 4.010.00 ROM with latest Radio stack and I am currently working in Lima Peru. The roaming indicator arrow does work on mine and I must admit that GSM signal is strong wherever I go in this country. I rcvd a phone call from home (Florida) and it was crystal clear.
Do you get any notification that GPRS is available, such as a "G" in the title bar or the phone notification area. Or any notification at all?
I do not get the "G" for gprs.
You don't get the "G". Okay. Do you receive any notification at all that you are in an area where GPRS Internet connection is available?
I am asking for if I can figure our what they are turning on or off, we may be able to make where everyone gets a notification whether they are on Tmobile or ATT. Thanks.
From what I have read on other messsage boards regarding the GPRS singal sign or meter for Tmobile, Tmobile (usa) pretty much feels that if you get a GSM signal you will get a GPRS signal so they have disabled the feature. I ran into this on the Sony T610 cell phone which I have for tmobile. The generic Sony Ericsson fimrware has a GPRS meter while the branded Tmobile firmware disables it.
Hmmm. Not sure how accurate their standpoint is on this. In remote areas you may be able to make a gsm call but I have found gprs unavailable. Oh well, they're the big fish.
v4.00.11: "G" indicator works well.
While this version looks like made by T-Mobile, I don't think they disabe gprs indicator...
I have WM 2003 , ROM version 4.00.11 ENG , cooked in Jeff's kitchen ( I choose 4.00.11 alone, not the T-Mobile one) ,RSU : 4.21.00 and I have the "G"; my network: Orange France , and my XDA is an O2 UK.

XDA 64MB 900/1800 - WM2003 4.00.11, Radio 4.21

All,
Recently upgrade to WM2003 Using Jeff's Kitchen - As reported by other posts, the Signal display is poor to erratic although actual reception seems good. Has anyone resolved this irritating issue by identifying a newer European RSU version or are we all waiting for the XDA II Radio versions update?. I tried the new WM2003 US versions to no avail as they seem to only poll the 1900 Network and GSM 900/1800 option in the Bootloader only hard resets the device. Hence a downgrade back to the 4.21.
Thanks - please advise
Al

I'm using ATT's Radiostack and wm2003 with my T-Mobile and having no problems. In fact, I've never had a clearer tone and no problems with reception. Granted the signal indicator is falty....
If I keep T-Mobile's stack however I get a lot of noise and chatter in the background. (USA, Michigan region)
Just upgraded to ATT's Radiostack from T-mobile 6.24, and noticed, that this radiostack do not show me provider name. I see only "home service" in this corner.
Any suggestions ?
K_Dima,
This is the reason why I downgraded to 4.21. The home service does not even have an Icon for GPRS availability - which is a tad annoying. Anyway the reason for the original post is the signal indicator problem with WM2003/RS 4.21 - The Indicator light flashes fine to say there is a signal but alas the signal indicator shows Zero bars.
Thanks
Al

T-mobile V6.24 is buggy radio stack!
it cannot display non-T-mobile network correctly.
I'm in Canada, every time I search or log on my local GSM network (Microcell-FIDO or Rogers). it tells my I'm on T-mobile network.
it is best to download (v6.18 or 6.08 ) or move to AT&T radio stack (A20) to resolve all problems

Cingular 8525

Hi
I have a cingular 8525 with use on Cingular and here is my problem i am in a area that has 3G coverage and i do not get 3G signal unless i am in my kitchen of my home.
a friend of mine has a 3G phone also and he can get 3G signal with no problems.
I have a 3G simcard the one with the red fireball and the 3G logo.
I have already brought the phone back once to see if that was the problem so cingular gave me a brand new phone.
I am thinking it is a ROM issue or a radio problem.
Heres the Rom version i have
ROM version 1.34.502.1
ROM Date 9/21/06
Radio Version 1.116.00.00
Protocol Version 32.53.7018.01H
Is there a radio update or ROM update that i can install safely with out messing up my phone im new to this. if so where can i get it from
Thanks for any of your help with this issue..
I think the answer isn't the one you want to hear. Since you CAN get 3G service in your kitchen, the problem is that A) something about your house makes it hard to get a signal (possibly the materials or electromagnetic interference) or B) you're in a fringe area where the signal is weak or C) you're in a good area, but the network needs some tweaking.
Cingular's 3G coverage is still very new and it takes people getting a 3G phone in their hands, discovering how well it works, and reporting their results back to Cingular in order for the network to improve. I suggest you go back to a Cingular store and talk to someone (a manager or a knowledgable employee) who can report back to the network team about your experience in your area. They may be able to take a look into it and get a simple fix. Reporting a problem I had at first with voice calls in a 3G area on my 8525 resulted in the problem being fixed by the network guys within 48 hours. I'm not saying there is a problem in your area necessarily. But if your experience is reported to someone who can actually do something about it, then the chances of your coverage improving increases greatly.
Good luck!
i did report the problem to cingular and they opened up a trouble ticket.they first said to me that it could be because of the data plan that i am using which is a blackberry plan since i am using the blackberry connect software on my 8525. but when i had the regular PDA connect plan i still didnt get the 3G signal.
But i said it wasnt because of my data plan it was because of there network.I mean what does the data plans have to do with 3G signal?
The blackberry plan i have now works perfectly with my 8525 and blackberry connect software with never one issue.
i have gone even outside and still no 3G signal even though it says on cingulars website that i am within the coverage area for 3G and even tech support said i am within the coverage to get 3G signal.
And as i mentioned i have all ready exchanged my 8525 for a brand new one and also got 2 new 3G sim cards in case there was something wrong with the sim cards.strange really strange..

3G connection drops when making/receiving a call

I use a Vario II and even if I have full 3G reception, it reverts back to GPRS when in a call which means I can't browse the web while in a call. It then connects back to 3G asap when the call is over. During video calls, 3G works fine and stays connected as it should.
I know it's possible to have both because I have actually made a test call while on 3G and was browsing the web for a few brief moments at the same time before it reverted back to crappy GPRS again.
Is this T-Mob UK taking the piss like they do with they're bloody proxy which compresses all images or is there something I can do here to remedy it.
Thanks.
Thoughts anyone?
My phone does that in my house (memphis, USA) and the problem i have is not being able to hang up. I found a program called showumts that i believe i got from here. All it does it change the registry so that a band tab is available in the phone options. I can manually set GSM or WCDMA and make it stick. This is not exactly like your problem but maybe it could force WCDMA instead of the Auto option built into the phone. (I have 8525 Hermes)
I have upgrade my ROM to the WWE AKU 3.3 TEST version on the upgrading site.
The details are listed hereunderwith my user CP.
This new ROM is great and I have it displaying G, U and H for GRPS, 3G and HSDPA respectivly.
I am sure that an official version will be released in South Africa soon.
In fact I have also changed the U to display 3G.
So far the ROM is very stable, the bluetooth stack greatly improved, and I have no gripes with the Radio ROM 1.35.

T-Mobile UK and turning Uni GSM radio on/off

Hi
I have a problem with my Universal that is difficult to pin down so let me describe the symptoms and if anybody can suggest anything then I would be grateful. I think that these symptoms are restricted to the UK T-Mobile network.
WM6 (or WM5 T-Mobile UK latest release)
ROM version: 2.05.00 WWE
Radio: 1.18.00
Protocol: 42.54.P8
ExtROM: Empty
Bootloader: 1.01
These are the symptoms:
1) When the phone goes out of service, it will not pick up the GSM signal without several hard-reboots when back in an area with reception.(It is configured to pick up only GSM on 1800) When it does find reception, it works fine as a phone if I don't move
2) Until the phone finds a gsm signal, bluetooth stereo streaming to my headphones does not work properly - I hear maybe 1 s of sound and then sound cuts out.If I cick stop and play in the player then I hear another 1s of sound.(I use Settings/Connections/Bluetooth, not Comm Manager, to turn on BT)
3) Until the phone finds a gsm signal, I cannot use the symbol at the top to see the phone status without the phone hanging completely
4) Until the phone finds a gsm signal, I cannot use Start/Settings/Phone without the phone hanging completely
5) Until the phone finds a gsm signal, I can access Start/Settings/System/Device Info _except_ for the hardware tab.
6) T-Mobile tell me that there are no blocks on my SIM, number or device
7) The phone works flawlessly with VF-UK and O2 (not tried 3) and picks up GSM reception immediately after coming back into an area with reception
I live in an area without T-Mobile signal so this is a real problem for me because I have to do several reboots each morning !!
Is there an application that tells me exactly what the GSM radio is doing and whether it has connected and then been forcibly disconected by the network ?
Is there an application that forcibly turns on and off the GSM radio without me using Settings / Radio or Comm Manager ?
All help welcome.
Peter
Hi,
I am not sure but It seems after upgrading your radio to 1.18.00 yr experiencing this prob.
Go to Setting>phone tab to Band on SELECT YOUR NETWORK TYPE put it on Auto from drop down list. restart your device.
If you still having prob then download again the Radio and install it because may be you have downloaded the radio is currupted
It's not the radio ROM that's the issue. Actually, 1.18 and WM6 seems to be the 'best' combination for finding the signal after a reboot. I've tried several radio ROMs (including the one released with the official T-Mobile updated WM5 ROM) and have the same issue with all of those.
Peter
Since upgrading to 1.18 I'm having problems that aren't solved when I revert to an earlier Radio ROM.
The main problem is it seems to be "UTMS or nothing", I used to use GSM only, but now when I switch to GSM only, my Universal does not display the little G symbol at the top, it shows some signal strength but then just has the no connection icon where the G should be (or where the U/3G is when not on GSM only).
Because of this, I cannot connect to the internet when on GSM only... it just keeps trying and trying with no success.
Any ideas?
