I have a Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016) (J320F/DS) and the charging port is damaged and I can't charge it. I want to turn it on using a power supply connected to the battery pins but it doesn't work. It turns on for 2-3 seconds on the samsung galaxy screen then it turns off I tried adding a 2k resistor to the thermistor pins but nothing changed. I'm applying 3.6V to the phone from a power supply. I'm not going to replace the charging port or buy a new battery because I only need it for data recovery so how can I turn it on?

Remove the battery from the phone and try connecting the power supply directly to the battery pins.

I tried that but it just turned on for 2-3 seconds on the samsung galaxy screen then turned off.

Just got a new "clever" multivoltage car charger, plugged in the Shift and now with either AC or DC external power ...
1. External power green LED not working.
2. No charging icon on the WM side, and no indication of charging on the PC side.
3. Shift won't power up with the battery removed and only external power.
However also ...
4. Battery doesn't discharge with external power on.
5. Once started the battery can be removed and the unit remains powered via external power.
So the Shift won't charge the battery, but the external power is there and preferentially powering the unit. Any chance there is a simple fix?

Sounds like you may have spoilt the Power Charging IC in the motherboard. Have a look at the following thread particularly Post No. 6 by reb http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=410161
The guy appeared to know what he was talking about but unfortunately he posted once and vanished..... Tried contacting him when I fried mine (I suspect mine was the more serious Power Distribution IC) without success. Mine could not power up at all hence ended up getting a replacement motherboad....
Looks simple enough to get the motherboard out ... but which IC should I get checked?
Is there a board diagram somewhere?
A friend has given me his 2012 Nexus 7 because it wont switch on.
I read many solutions on how to fix this but nothing works. I'm getting no responce from the device at all.
Heres what I've tried:
Leaving on mains charge for over 24 hours.
Long press on power button (30s+)
Disconnect battery cable & re-attach it.
Un-plugging & re-plugging in power & then trying to power it on.
Theres voltage going through the usb socket & I've measured power at the battery connector with my volt meter but its not powering up.
Now I've read that the Nexus 7 normally has a 5V/2A mains supply, however, I'm only using a 5V/1A supply which I use normally for my phone. Could this be why its not powering up as its not getting enough voltage to kick start it from being completely run down?
If its not the mains power, any ideas what could be causing the problem & is there any way to fix it?
Thanks.
Since 4 Days i experienced something weird.
When i want to charge my Note 4 i connect the Fast Charger to it. It is recognized as Fast Charging devioce and the device starts loading. 5 seconds later the device stops charging, 1 sec after that it restarts charging. Then it stops after 3 seconds and then again it starts. Sometimes my note (instead of charging) opens the Gear Vr app or tells me it is connected with a dockingstation.
So i tried using my Galaxy s5 charger. the problem goes on...charging..stop..charging..stop...charging..stop..so i looked at my usb port and cleaned it....nothing..no dirt...with the s5 charger iam able to find a position in which the phone starts to charge.
any suggestions?

Try the Hama MO•38É.
The MO 38E has Quick Charging and Healthy Trickle Charging and is VERY ROBUST!
0-100% in just 35 Min for the Note 4 (don't blame me, if my information is wrong)
0-50 % in just 20 Minutes ☺☻
I don't want to advertise with it but i made good experience with the MO 38E!

This is a very weird issue. Best suggestion would be to bring it back to Samsung for repairs.
Before you send it back, try using a Blower or compressed air can to clean both the USB cable and the phone's micro USB port. Or maybe try a different Cable.
The problem sounds like a hardware issue because a) the second charger provides the same results, and b) there's a special position where charging commences - if I understood the OP right.
So I fear it's something like a bad soldering joint at the USB port. :/
Kenney: Try compressed air; maybe it's just a tiny fracture of metal sticking somewhere in the port.
this is why i use a Qi charger lol. nothing to break and the phone ports stay undamaged.

hy bro i am having the same problem that you mentioned so did you find a solution plz let me know.
This is a problem that is entirely too common on ANY phone that uses a micro USB socket for charging. The whole design of this type of socket is pathetically fragile and (imo) totally unsuitable for regular plugging in to.....
I have owned/do own several Galaxy devices, on 2 of them, the socket has failed and a 3rd device is showing early signs of the same failure.
My wife's current device is the Note 4 and mine is the S5....Both have this (stupid) micro USB socket......
For both of these devices, I have purchased a second battery and an external wall charger......simply because I DO NOT TRUST that the connectors in these phones will last the length of the contracts they were purchased under.....

This is also happening to me. Any solution to this?
Done some research.......
The USB socket is directly soldered to the surface of a 'daughterboard' (a separate board connected to the main/motherboard by a flat 'flex' cable).
The connectors on the socket are *tiny* and totally unsuitable for hand soldering, so the entire daughterboard will need replacing.
I don't know how difficult it will be to replace the board, but if it's anything like the S5, the screen will have to be removed in order to access it.......A very delicate and none too easy part to remove..........
.......and if the board follows the same pattern as with the S2, there will be multiple variants of it, none of which is interchangeable...meaning you have to find the right one.
Most Samsung devices come with a 2 year warranty (at least in the EU) so my advice is to get a warranty repair......

okay so I think my USB port might just be broken.. because I tried with sky-high kernel also.. still says cable charging.. and it’s not even AC charging, it says USB even though it’s plugged into an outlet. I tried with multiple cables too..same thing. USB charging :/

Yep.....that does sound like a classic symptom of a port failure......
And as you mention custom kernels, I wouldn't count on Samsung repairing it under warranty.....you have probably tripped knox, so Samsung is likely to say 'not our problem'......

I found a Note 3 and cleaned it up to the point where it'll boot up and react to me pressing the home and power buttons. Pretty sure the screen is busted since it won't turn on, I tried to connect it to my MHL cable but it won't display to my TV either. It charges fine after putting a new battery in it, why wouldn't it display to the TV if the port works for charging?

Because the MHL cable uses different pins than just the charging pins.

Crap. Guess I'd have to repair the port somehow then, obviously some pins are damaged.
Hey everyone, it's my first post here and I'm glad to meet you all.
Recently, I updated my SGS7 edge using OTA updates and it failed to turn on after(stuck on bootloop on samsung logo). While i managed to turn it on after wipe in recovery mode, battery percentage decided to drop to low percentage (not sure what exacly, but to the point I decided to charge it). It shows alert about wet USB port, and I'm sure it wasn't wet at all, but I decide to stop charging and let it dry for few hours. Battery lost its charge completly while it was drying. After few hours i pluged it again, and it was charging (at least i thought so). After 2 hours of charging it managed to charge 1% of battery and then it turn off. When I measure the current flow to the battery it shows 90mA when I plug charger, then it drops to 0 mA after few seconds. When I press buttons it shows that current is flowingh again, but never more than 90mA. Anyone knows what can be a reason for such behavior? Is it charger port broken, or firmware malfunction?
EDIT: I've trierd to charge it for a bit with power button pressed. Now it shows that current is equal to 170mA and it keeps flowing without button pressed.

The way you've described it almost sounds like a short. It may also explain the difficulty with OTA (short). The S7 USB charging port may be suspect but also the battery may be at end of life. To eliminate the other usual suspects, have you tried a different USB cord and/or charger? Does your S7 show as connected when plugged into PC (either through adb commands or file explorer)? Have you tried charging using a wireless charger?
If needed, the good news is charging port isn't too difficult to replace, granted you have a heat gun and a few tools (google S7 teardown -- iFixit or youtube). If you're convinced the port is bad and decide to replace it, might as well replace battery too (OEM only). After the above mentioned process of elimination you're left thinking software, maybe download model specific required firmware (matching current binary) and familiarize yourself with ODIN flashing.

I managed to charge the device, I left it plugged into charger with power button pressed and it started after ~2 hours. Now, I'm trying to charge it to 100% just to backup my data. Really appreciate your help tho.
I was trying 4 different USB cables, 2 chargers and powerbank. Device wasn't recognized by computer by any means. I have no access to wireless charger unfortunately. I'm not gonna replace any part of it becouse it is time to change it to newer model I guess.

Hopefully all is well then. I wouldn't rule out repairing the S7E, it's still a competitive device. Newer phones are fine if you can afford it but I prefer proven devices with development and software support. Granted, it is a personal preference. For the same price of a new flagship phone I can justify to the wife fiddling around with 5 or 6 old ones (ha). Other than an LCD/digitizer most parts can be gotten pretty cheap and there's always [insert any online sales (ebay/swappa/amazon)] in order to acquire a salvage device for parts.
