I have the option of going with both but I'm not sure which one I want to choose, I know 4th gen can't be modded with things like Lineage OS like the 3rd Gen can, but I've heard that the 4th gen version has a better GPU, slightly better CPU and Battery and I was thinking it might be better for some light emulation because of that. Stock OS doesn't bother me that much since I can just sideload the play store anyway.
Which one would be best?
Loading a slimmed down OS on a 3rd Gen may give you better performance than a 4th running stock Fire OS.
The 4th Gen does have USB host capability which is nice.

As mentioned, I'm a Nexus 4 owner. My phone has developed hardware problems though, and I'm looking at replacing it -- mainly focusing on the Moto G and E.
I'm not a hardcore phone user; other than communications mostly use it for music (Google, Pandora, Youtube), light reading, occasional surfing in line, and a single non-graphics intensive game. I also use my phone to double as a camera when I'm out walking and something cool comes up though, which is the main reason I'm considering the G over E. Price isn't a huge issue, but I don't see the need to buy some fancy $600 phone for my light use.
All that said, I'm not on a contract, and was wondering about the OS/experience/apps on the G/E. I've only ever been a Nexus owner, because I wanted to avoid carrier/manufacturer stuff. How easy/feasible is it to get to a version of the latest stock Android OS without any Motorola/etc. stuff on the phone -- essentially, to replicate my basic 4 interface/experience? How far behind are G OS updates behind stock Android updates? Is there any general timeline for how much longer it will continue to be updated?
Thank you for your time.
I Guess "The G" Will do Good for you....Provided you don't multi-task a lot.
There are also some Proper Exposure problems in Camera. But surely Its the Best out there in this Price range ( Except for some Phones like OnePlus One etc. but they too have their own Cons)
Regarding Updates to Android I Guess CyanogenMod 12.1 Is Good(If you want Pure Nexus Experience without Moto Stuff) but also If you prefer I guess even Stock might be Good and Stable. The CM ppl are doing a Good job in delivering Speedy Updates .The Moto G got updated to 5.1.1 really soon after the Source got released. Overall a really Good phone to Own.I think as per the Developer activity on the Phone the Moto Will receive Android M upgrade too .... Would Definitely recommend this Phone....
I also came from a nexus 4, which developed a dead touchscreen area...
The only thing I hate on this phone is the 1 gb of ram
I don't know about stock, because I always install cyanogen on the first day
Sent from my Moto G 2014
I had a N4 back to 2014.
Comparing to Moto G2, I dont notice much diference based on my light usage.
Cameras, display, battery life, speakers are better on G.
Performance, 2GB of RAM and design ( omg Nexus 4 is the sexiest phone ever) are pros for N4.
Sent from my Moto G 2014 using XDA Free mobile app
I also came from N4. The only disadvantage is the RAM. All the rest is better on G.
I'm also eyeing on Moto G over Nexus 4 specially the dual sim version, i will use it only as back up phone, i already sold my Redmi 1s, i prefer stock android with fast OS updates.
So, just ordered one of these in 4.7".
Background:
I have/am used just Motorola phones in the past. Currently, I am using the Moto G 2013 LTE (1st gen). It is the perfect size phone for me. This phone is amazing for my basic needs. Battery life is out of this world. BUT, the 5mp is garbage. If this phone had at least an 8mp camera, I probably wouldn't have been on the search for another phone.
For a short spurt I've also had the 2nd Gen Moto G.
I also have the Moto G 2015 (3rd gen). This phone also has great battery life, camera is great (to me). BUT it's too bulky for me. Thought I could live with it, for the upgraded camera, but kept finding my self putting my sim card in my 1st gen. After my wife seen I set it aside, she snatched it up.
One of the main reasons I've stuck with the Moto Gs are a balance on price, build quality and dependability, easy unlocking and custom recovery, and great custom ROM (Cyanogenmod) support. And if I wanted to stick with stock firmware, Motorola leaves it almost AOSP. And they actually update the firmware...
Like all good things that pass, Motorola decided to follow the trend of big phones, so I don't have an upgrade path with them unless I go big myself.
http://www.phonearena.com/phones/si...,Alcatel-OneTouch-IDOL-3-4.7/phones/8655,9274 (might have to enable the "view layered" option to get a better comparison of size)
I ordered the 4.7" Icon 3 a few hours ago, now wondering if I made the right choice. On paper, its a great upgrade from my first gen, with almost the same size. I've never used an Alcatel, so I question the durability and support of it. Example, am I going to have a cracked screen if the phone slides out of my pocket in my truck and tumbles onto the floor? Is Alcatel even going to bother with updating it to 5.1.1, or 6.0? If not, is there going to be a stable CM12.1 build for it (real important for me)? Not reading any hint on Alcatel updating this phone to any other version (away from the buggy 5.0) is not giving me great feelings about their service. All the great specs and features and perfect size of this device means nothing without support. If you would do it over, is there another device with similar specs and size, with CM development, that you would get? What about one with better build quality?
Well, I had a 4.7" before I ordered the 5.5". I can say that for its size/specs, its a very snappy phone (I would go as far as to say snappier than the 5.5 on stock, because the 5.5 had a ton of issues early on). The dual front facing speakers gave some amazing sound for such a small device, almost on par with the 5.5" model (hard to compare without some sound equipment, though). As for OS updates, there is a rumor that Alcatel is skipping 5.1 and going straight for 6.0, but I've seen no concrete proof of that. As for development, I know there is work being done on CM for the 4.7", but I haven't kept up with it much since getting the 5.5 (gave the 4.7 to the girlfriend). Bottom line is, truthfully, if you want a phone that has great support and constant software updates from the manufacturer, then you've probably got the wrong phone. I will say, though, that I never had a single issue with uhhh, 5.0.2 (I think?). The specs got the work done, that's for sure, and its construction is sturdier than its looks give it credit for.
FYI - showed up on Jan 28th. Price isn't great; likely preloaded with FireOS v4 which limits options. At least it's new - although could be old stock (with a corresponding old battery).

I know it's an old post I figured I better reply to this one than start a new thread.
Where can I read more on the old vs new batteries in the HDX? Does that affect the 3rd gen HDX? Does that affect HDX 8.9 as well?

Issue is not specific to HDX or other Amazon devices. A typical Lithium Ion battery degrades both with the number of (full) charge/discharge cycles and chronological age. Temperature, battery construction and material quality are also factors. All things considered the batteries Amazon sourced for the 3rd gen 7 and 8.9" models appear to be holding up well if the number if issues reported in these forums is any measure. Also mirrors my personal experience with several well enjoyed Thors. You can learn more about Li-ion batteries here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium-ion_battery

Ah, thank you, I read it as an old gen vs new gen and misunderstood the post.
Been using my Moto G 3rd gen now with Marshmellow, running very well, but noticed the X Play and liked the look of the battery size.
A few questions if I may:
1) Will I notice a performance increase
2) Whats the screen brightness like and quality compared to the Moto g
3) How much better is the battery as the Moto g 3rd is pretty good for a day or even two if I'm careful
4) I really like the new twist to start camera and double chop to start flash, is this available on the play
5) How is it for the odd game, ie asphalt 8, runs OK but load times are slow on the moto g
Any other things that make it better, my other choice is the Moto X 2014, but its an older device.

1. Probably a good bit, but it mostly depends on phone usage
2. Personally I think the X Play is really bright, don't know about the G3
3. 2 days is no problem on the X Play, maybe you can get more if you get 2 with the G3
4. Only the twist to start camera is present on the X Play, you will need a custom rom for the chop chop.
5. Due to the octa core, game loading will be faster. And gaming performance will be better
Compared to the Moto X 2014, the X Play doesn't feel as premium but it has an sd card and the 21 mp camera is very good.
It is big step up from the G3 though
Thanks for that, shame about the chop chop, use it all the time. Battery life 3 days would be amazing and the camera sounds nice, might give it a go. Is Marshmallow out for the PLAY yet?

Yes, everyone has it by now
I also upgraded from the moto g 4g and performance with gaming is better. You won't notice a big difference with normal usage since the moto g already performs very smooth. Battery is the biggest plus to upgrade and you can do some better multitasking with the 2gb.
Hey guys,
I have a Lenovo tb-x606F that is probably one of the worst current tablets ive used. Its barely usable and moving through menus is insanely slow. I have everything stock and thought of the possibility (if available) to install a much faster custom rom like lineageos etc. I've been out of the modding community for a while, so im completely lost on new tech things/issues. Is there a way to actually fix the slowness of this tablet and or is there a custom rom recommended that makes it blazing fast? I've tried uninstalling and disabling most apps (some OEM), nothing works.
This thing still runs pretty bad.
The creep on this thing is real, looking for an alternative as well
The worst part is the first gen was better. It had a SD processor. The second gen got that turd MediaTek processor. My sister had the first gen which is why I bought the 2nd gen. Yeah.. never again. Lenovo can tell this junk to someone else. lol
