1. Both 2.8 and 2.81 won't work on our device, mostly 2.81
2. I had it semi working on 2.8 but when I have updated to 2.81 I've lost root and couldn't re-install it
3. you can either revert back to 2.79 SR3 which work just fine or try Magisk v 12.0
4. I moved to magisk and so far so good, at least until chainfire will get his bugs rooted
SuperSu 2.81 running just fine on my device

Same thing happened to me. Flashed 2.79 SR3 to get root back. 2.82 has been released but I haven't tried it.
Edit: Updated to 2.82 and it works fine on all my devices - Nexus 6P, Nexus 2013, GS4 & Acer A500 tab.

Could you write a short tutorial about magisk installation. Tried 3 times to install it, but nothing happened "no root".

Actually a tutorial would be very short one.
* I have downloaded the zip installation file version 12.0
* copy it to your sdcard in your phone
* boot into custom recovery mode
* flash the zip file via the recovery
That's it.
It's the same as flashing chainfire supersu zip file.

That's the only thing i've done.
You can also download the magisk utility from the play and use it to root your device.

Extract the boot.img from your ROM and flash before magisk zip. It always clears up any issues I'm having. If your using custom kernel will need to flash again.
I have the same problème so I just flashed magisk but seems like I can't change the permissions

As suggested before, flash your boot.img and the re-apply the root of your choice.
Hi, anyone know if V12.0.2.0.qfjmixm is ok with magisk? scared to update because hard to go back. I have have a phone that came from China but use in New Zealand. Took awhile for Magisk to fix the bootloop issue with that.
Updated yesterday.
Magisk works.
I updated to EEA V12.0.2.0.qfjmixm using the recovery method, upgrade went fine. Then tried to install magisk using twrp = bootloop.
Reinstalled the same ROM again using TWRP, followed by magisk (after initial boot) and now is OK.
But as always back-up your data/apps/etc using TWRP just in case.
i installed magisk without twrp, just patched boot.img from the v12 rom, works very well

Hi woozie, would you mind sending me a patched boot.img and an original one for MIUI 12? My version is 12.0.2.0.QFJMIXM. I'd really appreciate that since my net is too bad to download large files. Hopefully our version is the same. Thanks in advance
i don't mind at all, but my version is 12.0.3.0, if yours is the same it should not be any problem, tell me if you want the patched boot i will upload somewhere

but i did not manage to install the OTA file, so i had to download the entire firmware, about 2,2 GB, i think the boot patched is useless for you until you have not the whole firmware
You have to remove completely Magisk, then update OTA the full firmware, copy the firmware on the pc, because magisk will damage the firmware and you wil not copy it after install magisk, the zip will be corrupted. Extract boot from it, put it on the phone, patch it with magisk manager and flash it via fastboot, then install magisk

Oh, I don't think that would work. Thank you very much anyways, I'm still trying to download the ROM. Not even a dial up would be as troublesome hahah.

Hi,
I was trying to install the new version of Magisk 22, by patching my recovery image since Ramdisk is indicated as No in Magisk, but I can't figure out which recovery.img I should be using. I have OrangeFox 11 recovery installed, but I tried with its .img and it didn't work. My phone got encrypted, and I had to format my data thus reseting my phone in order for it to boot.
I also tried to flash the Magisk.apk file renamed as .zip but same issue, password at reboot which made me format my data partition again.
It's bugging me and I don't know what to do.
If someone can help me I would be very thankful!
U need only a recovery, flash the apk as zip. That's working
I already tried flashing the apk, it only ended with the same issue at boot, asking a password I didn't have

Then use magisk from orangefox. It's 21.4 I think
Thanks I will.
But it's still bizarre that Magisk 22.0 doesn't work on my phone
I just tried and once again it didn't work. I had to format data partition once again, and restore a previous backup, which by the way, didn't fully work.
I'm starting to think that I won't be able to install Magisk on my phone anymore

It worked fine for me. Maybe try and ask you problem in the general Magisk support thread? https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/magisk-general-support-discussion.3432382/page-2264#post-84825737

You too have a Redmi Note 7?
Did you manage to install Magisk 22.0 or an older version?
Thanks I will ask on the general Magisk support thread
Yes I have. I used Magisk from Orangefox first time and since updated to Magisk 22.1.
I whould suggest flashing Magisk v20.4 zip for Redmi Note 7 using OrangeFox recovery, cause this worked for me, then using the Magisk app, update it to 22.1 using the app itself, its quick and painless and also can remove force encryption. I hope it could work for you.
The required files for root are in this link (i used the same files) https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1bpvlCnRFNQS8hIrYY5ePWS6WXfeSyt9x?usp=sharing
P.S. dont unzip anything cuz the zip file has to be flashed all together
update : the apk is deleted cuz the zip already installs it
Hello everyone
How to install magisk on lineageos 18.1?
I've downloaded/installed magisk.apk from official github website, but I cannot find clear steps about how to root the device, any help? thanks!
the device is sm-g900f
Download the magisk .apk to your phone and install it. Rename .apk to .zip and reboot to your recovery by holding volume up and home while powering on.
If using TWRP
Tap Install
Tap Install Zip to toggle the button
Select the magisk .zip file and flash
Reboot

Hi Boatshow,
great - worked for me with Magisk 23.0 perfectly - thank you so much!!! Installing first wasn't necessary so, I just downloaded to SD Card, renamed, installed with TWRP. Than I had to finish installing inside system, now all works well!
Hey guys!
New here and new to Android in general.
Instead of creating another thread and I will if its preferred, I wanted to ask how do I install Magisk without TWRP?
I'm on LineageOS 8.1 and my device is an OnePlus 8T.
The goal is to pass SafetyNet.

edit: possible human error.
Editx2: How crucial is it that I use this command to copy the patched image vs just dragging and dropping my phone to the pc?
Copy the patched image to your PC with ADB:adb pull /sdcard/Download/magisk_patched_[random_strings].img
My OnePlus 8T doesn't have an SD Card and I couldn't find the directory to run the command. Instead I dragged and dropped / copied from phone to PC - then flashed the patched boot.img.
After reboot my phone is stuck in the bootloader for LineageOS

Hi there, I have the same exact question here!
There seems to be no easy way to install TWRP on Pixel 3 XL...even if I would like to, as it would make full system backups a piece of cake!

You can install Magisk thru LineageOS Recovery Mode, just use adb sideload magisk.zip(rename magisk.apk into magisk.zip) after you've installed Magisk app on your phone.

It worked for me. I did enable usb debugging as root tho maybe that could be it. I got
E:signiture verification failed
aswell but I just selected yes and it worked on my pixel XL
So i installed magisk, and booting normally works fine, but when booting into magisk (with the power button + volume up combo) the touchscreen doesnt work.
I saw somewhere that clearing cache fixed it, but that didn't help.
Anyone that has/had the same issue and knows a fix?
(Ik attaching a mouse and keyboard appearently works, but it's a phone i would like touchscreen)
As for why i installed magisk, im trying to install lineageos and i tried with twrp while installing it via heimdall/the leaked linux odin build but it started into a blackscreen, no logo or anything.
And since TWRP itself recommends installing by rooting with magisk first and then using the app i thought i would try that but sadly i cant boot into magisk since i dont have a working touchscreen.
(Also, if this isnt the right place to post it im sorry, im new to XDA and didnt know if i should post here or in the ROMS section, but this seems correct?)
SOLVED
Followed this guide, works great: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/guide-twrp-and-root-for-a20e-a202f-updated.4384841/
I personally used the older magisk and twrp versions that are attached to the guide itself.
Edit:
Latest versions of magisk and twrp work too!
For twrp, extract the vbmeta thats already in the tar and make a new .tar with that and the newest twrp image from https://twrp.me/
For Magisk, replace Magisk.apk with the newest apk, and replace the Magisk.zip with the newest .apk file renamed to .zip (if youre having trouble with it, I can't help you since i use linux and not windows or mac, the best advise i can give is to enable file extensions in your file browser)
After that just do whatever the guide says.
