SM-T357W - setting up offical twrp app not working - Samsung Galaxy Tab A series Questions & Answers

Hi
I am trying to bring this old tablet back to like to use in flight sims. I want to update it from its current 5.0.2 Android.
Google searchs have been vague at best. I was able to success to gain root access. I'm doing this all with no PC.
When I installed official TWRP app....and get to the first screen where you check the 3 boxes, the last box (network one) I check it, then window pops up with private terms blah blah. I tap that window and the big form opens up and you can scroll it and hit okay at bottom then it goes away. But then the 3rd box unchecked itself.
So if I go further and try and twrp flash then click on select device I get an error "failed to fetch data from server"
If I go into network statistics menu I get that same smaller box like when I'm setting up but there no ok/yes button on it to accept the terms.
Any ideas?

@rescue119, I bought one of these SM-T357W tablets used and made an updated TWRP and 18.1 LineageOS rom for it late Dec 2021/early Jan 2022. I've been using it for the last 2 months with little problems and it based mainly off my other Tab A/E msm8916 work.
Having said that, my build does NOT have a working LTE/mobile data and selfie camera/video recording is completely broken. If you are interested in trying this build, I will start a new thread and post all the FAQ/details needed over the next couple of days.

Ya that would be great. Those items are not needed. Just some of the software I want to use is incompatible with the older versions of android.

Done. See

and
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...-1-galaxy-tab-a-sm-t357w-jan-25-2022.4409799/
If you have no PC, you will need your existing TWRP to update to my TWRP. Your existing TWRP will NOT work with flashing LineageOS 18.1. In TWRP, goto to install, install image, select my TWRP, then flash it, reboot back into recovery and then you can install my LineageOS 18.1 zip following the instructions in my FAQ. You MUST format Data.

Awesome thank you. I'll give the non pv route a go first. Worse case I wait til I'm home tomorrow

You only need the first 2 files: lineage-18.1-20220125-UNOFFICIAL-gt58ltebmc.zip and TWRP_3.5.2_9_SM-T357W_20220125_Unofficial.img
The last 3 are the actual code.

You only need to install the LineageOS zip file. That's it.

Success! Thanks so much

My camera seems to work...even though it's garbage and I won't use it. Also in the about tablet it says device name is now sm-t350 lol. No biggie just letting you know

That's something I noticed, but haven't bothered changing yet. In the next build, I will change it.

It's just changing this line of code.
https://github.com/retiredtab/andro...c/blob/lineage-18.1/lineage_gt58ltebmc.mk#L27
Code:
PRODUCT_MODEL := SM-T350
to
PRODUCT_MODEL := SM-T357W

And it's done.

Weird - the only thing I had done to mine was root with Vipermod - update installed fine, broke root, voodoo root keeper restored root without issue....
I didn't really have any of the issues that most people had - tho the screen tearing on the recent app list now appears to be gone....
I have the dlpkg if anyone wants it, i just have to transfer it to my PC. Looks like the kernel update, is only 11MB so it might upload here if I pack it in a zip..
Looking at it, there is a blob file almost certainly a new kernel, some system patches, lib patches, the updater script is tremendous.. and almost all if not all system apps get a patch too.
Nope, even though it is 11.54MB, and the forum claims that 11.81MB is the max, it won't let me upload it..I guess if you want it PM your email I can send it over..
Scratch my previous - the screen tearing issue on the recent apps list still exists past six or seven recent apps...
Got the notification too.I m rooted though so i wont proceed with the update procedure unless someones makes a flashable zip!
Reported for dubble posting. Use searching next time please.
I got mine around 10 am. But what I was doing when I got it was a wipe. After the wipe was when it told me I had an update. So far seems pretty good. Of course that's been said many times only to have to eat them. Time will tell.

Nice, please download the update and pull the .zip before rebooting to install it:
Code:
adb pull /cache/dlpkgfile.zip
then you can delete it:
Code:
adb shell rm /cache/dlpkgfile.zip

No work for me.
I am using ICS - Rooted
Downloaded the Updated (through OTA) and then it prompts to reboot and install and..Fails.
It is prolly because I Modified the system (Removed bloat and changed a few things. Lol.
I may re install it as stock rooted and try again.
I have no Issues, so I may not. Hmmmm

Yes, the updater script does a fair bit of assessing of your system..including all your bloatware that I can tell..because all of that is patched.

Does not update my deb....
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I received the update OTA on my rooted (deb) N7/2, booted to TWRP and flashed the .zip, that is in /cache. Update runs fine. I didn't use the recovery option to fix SU permissions.
Just rebooted to OS, went to recovery and flashed the SU.zip afterwards.
Root and TWRP are working fine.
I received the update too and installed it via twrp.
All went fine exept for root. I just had to install chainfires root package (1.55) again.
is it a sign to get a factory image in a short time?

You have touchscreen problems on a LTE version? I don't have any problems on my LTE version with 08.2013 build date.
If the update is for fixing touchscreen problems, then I'm not sure if I should update...
No, I have the FLO but I think, that FLO will get this update, too... sooner or later...

Slightly OT here, but since it might still be useful for future OTA updates: How does one catch/find out the OTA URL of an update? I understand that the update itself gets downloaded to /cache and there you can find the filename, but what about the URL?

simplest way is a proxy in your wifi network, which handles all http/https requests for the phone/tablet.

If you know the update file name then it's easy. Address is android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/google_devicecodename/filename so in our case android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/google_razorg/filename
if i am not mistaken the url is also visible in logcat.
So just to make sure I`m getting this right, I have a rooted DEB with TWRP installed:
1. Flash the zip from recovery
2. Flash SuperSU.zip
3. Reboot
4. Done
Or is a reboot needed in between between steps 1. and 2.? Does anyone have a working link to the SuperSU files needed (thanks in advance!).

No need to reboot between 1&2, at least not on the wifi model.

Even more simple is:
1) just allow a USB developer mode in the settings (no root needed)
2) fire up your ubuntu linux
3) run adb lolcat | grep http in the terminal
and take a look for something like

[Q] OD2 Lollipop SD card write problem

I had issues with apps writing to the external SD Card after the OD2 update. I'm running a stock rooted system on the SPH-L720 (non-spark). The solution to the problem was the same as the one I used with KitKat on NAE and NG2. You have to edit your platform.xml file found under /system/etc/permissions/
You'll have to add the Blue text below
Code:
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE">
<group gid="sdcard_r"/>
<group gid="sdcard_rw"/>
[COLOR="Blue"]<group gid="media_rw"/>[/COLOR]
</permission>

That is odd. I went back to full stock to take the OTA, rooted it with CF-AutoRoot and did nothing else with the system. I thought AOSP reversed the changes to the permissions with Lollipop but I guess Samsung may have done otherwise. I was surprised when I found Titanium Backup was having issues. Did some investigating and found the same issue that we all had with KitKat.
On a side note, I'm looking forward to a possible future Lollipop ROM from you and your Dev Team for the SPH-L720. I've run ROMs from your team in the past and you guys do great work!

Don't be sorry, we all had a point where we were new to this.
Unfortunately I do not know of a way to fix it without Root. Root is fairly easy to achieve on this device thanks to unlocked bootloaders. I wish I could walk you through step by step but there is a pretty good tutorial here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2257101
Thanks everyone for all the help. I hope I get this thing working soon.
Anyone know how to get rid of that annoying sound when booting up that happens right around the Sprint screen?
Well I got it Rooted, put the line of code in and it still doesn't work. I can't even format the SD card. I don't know what's going on with it. Any ideas?

And did you use an app like Root Check to see if your rooted?
I used twrp manager after I rooted. It'll ask if you want twrp to fix the sd card write permission and then you scroll down and apply the patch. All done.

How did you manage that? It's pretty difficult to hard brick a phone.
It would not start after reboot. Just keep getting white boxes saying each app failed to start.

Unable to create new folders or save anything to the internal memory

So ill try to put all the other information that's important here.
I tried flashing the Stock rom back to this phone through TWRP and I feel like I've flashed it about 8 times now. It comes up normally and I can go through the setup wizard and when I hit the home screen I tired getting Adaway. When I tried to download the apk to my phone and I try to choose a save location it keeps saying that I can't find a save location. Then I tried opening up the file manager and tried creating a new folder it says that the operation cant be performed. I have plenty of storage available on my 6T and I cant see what I'm doing wrong. I've flashed and reflashed both TWPR and the Stock ROM both Beta and official and I still run into the same issue. Is anyone able to lend a hand? Thank you in advance!
Edit: Fixed it!

which is sold under various names from vendors @AliExpress.
I'm trying to match this unit with one of the threads here and it seems like no one is dealing with it, but I may have missed some relevant posts, can you please help me with that? Or maybe you know about other forums where they discuss the unit...
The device has several issues (bottom line: do not buy it, the hardware is okish but the software is horrible) and I'd really like to explore ways to customize it but I'm not even able to connect to it via adb, let alone become root or install a custom firmware...
Seem like no one heard of it. Bad luck.
I'm trying to gain root access and fix some of the bull***, but I'm running short of options.
What I know so far:
Invoking "su" from the command line (or via adb) returns a "not allowed" message;
I have no firmware to patch with magisk;
the amazing temp root does not work, the device is patched.
What else could I try?
I may try the MTK Droid Tools, but I think they use the same exploit used by the amazing temp root so I guess this is not a solution. Moreover they need Windows and I can't connect to the unit with adb in windows, only with Linux (heavens know why, the Universal ADB Drivers says it's all "ok" but adb does not see the device).
Did you get anywhere with it? I just got 825x_pro for my R56 Mini.
Nowhere. There seem to be some info in the 4pda.ru forum (in russian) but I did not dig deep into into.

Hi,
You have to go to:
- The settings
- "Car infotaiment" and click in the high right corner on the "cogwheel" and you get a little window where you have to type the numbers (example: 5678; 8888, ....etc ) And you get the hidden menu !
