Galaxy S7 Edge won't charge/boot/anything - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hello all,
this is a rather strange thing that recently happened: my dad's galaxy S7 edge which has been working completely flawless the last few years recently decided to just turn it self off. He handed it to me saying it was working fine last night and trying to use it next day absolutely nothing happens anymore.
I tried to charge via USB with Samsung charger, wireless charger from Anker in case the USB port is defective, and different key combos to restart etc. On PC nothing is detected either..
Could a faulty USB charger have killed the device? When plugging it in, there is absolutely no sign of life - you can hear a faint "buzzing" but no indicator lights etc..
Does anyone have any tips? It would be really appreciated!

Battery or port pcb failure. Maybe both.
Replace battery as it's long overdue.
Once an Li reaches 80% of its original capacity it's reached the end of its usable lifespan.
It's degraded at that point. Degraded Li's are more likely to fail. Any swelling is a failure; replace immediately if observed.
Replace battery and go from there...

On a heavily used device the battery lifespan is typically 1-3 years.
I plan to replace my N10+ device's battery about every year, routine maintenance.
A failed Li can do a lot of damage. It rests on the display... which is somewhat fragile.
Get a new rear cover seal when replacing the battery so it retains its water resistance. On AMOLED (NOT LCD displays!!!) displays anhydrous isopropyl alcohol can be used to help loosen the double sides tape on the rear cover and battery if you do it yourself.
Controlled heat is used to help loosen the rear cover on most of these phones. Many shops will replace the battery for a low price as well.

Pretty amazing stuff right here. My S7 Edge did the exact same thing last night.
Think Samsung hit the kill switch.

I'm writing this message from my dad's s7 edge which has kinda the same problem but it's still usable. It shuts down suddenly (even with battery full 100%) and the only way to turn it on is plugging it to the charger, otherwise no sign of life.

I believe, most of this case was caused by power IC, my s7 edge was suddenly died last night too. You can see on this thread and tutorial.

Yeah, i want to try this too, but i think it cost too much money, not worth for me. And also i dont trust to much for 3rd party repair on here except samsung service center.

short circuited my note

First of all, I apologize in advance,
1. Because I know this isn't a tech support forum.
2. Because I don't contribute and help out as much as I should.
Coming here was a last resort, I don't consider myself a noob, but I'm really stuck here.
Please note that I appreciate every single response, and I will donate if anyone can give me a fix.
With that aside, let me get started

Okay so about a week ago, I accidentally bent my charger when it was charging my note.
It didn't charge at all that night
That morning, I blew into the charge port on my note, suspecting that dust may have been the cause.
Somehow, that helped, as my note charged fully that day, in about 2-3 hours
Then I tried charging it the next night.
It charged incredibly slowly, reaching about 70% after 10 hours charge
The next few nights were similar, but reaching no more than 40% charge after 10 hours.
It got progressively worse, it would only charge if I applied pressure to the mini-usb,
I looked around this morning, and stumbled across another guy with the same problem

He advised,
"Well I have figured out the issue. If you look into the charging port slot on the phone you will notice a small thin flat piece of metal which inserts into the charger. That was slanted and angled downward which would not let "ANY" charger or docking station charge correctly also causing it to drain the battery. Contacts on this piece and the phone were to close causing a minor contact draining power. I used a precision flathead screw driver and lifted the piece slightly and now works fine"
So I tried that, and it seemed to help, as the note began charging, (extremely slowly, reaching about 30%)
Then I tried pushing that "thin flat piece of metal up even further"
However, I went too far, and I couldn't fit the charger into the charge port.
So I tried pushing it back into the centre but I may have damaged one of the pins in the charge port (inside the phone)
I seen a little spark, and the note turned off.
I tried switching it on, and managed to boot to safe mode (no idea how)
So then I tried charging it, I applied pressure and managed to get it to start charging. (thank god)
This was about 30 mins ago, it looks to be holding the charge at about 20%, but it's not increasing

I suspect one of the pins in the note charge port was snapped off.. although I'm not sure.. (it appears to be the one on the right)
1.Does anyone know how many pins there are on the charge port inside the note? (is it 4 or 5?)
2.What should I do?
If I broke a pin, it should not charge at all, right? (but it seems to be charging)
3. Do I need to replace the charge port, if so, how much would it cost?
4. Would I be better off getting a charging station, and charging the battery using that
5. Should I try moving the metal strip again? (inside the charge port of the note)
oops forgot to mention, when the problem started, and the note was slow-charging, an audible buzzing/humming could be heard in the wall outlet
also, I'm using my original samsung usb charger, not a generic one, and I'm charging directly into a wall outlet.

Here my tipp: You can go to a service center, maybe they even repair it under warranty. Or you can order a new micro usb port and replace it. Google should help you to find a seller. Depends on whether you feel comfortable enough to replace it yourself or not. Oh one more thing, I would stopp using your Note to avoid any further damage.

there are 5 pins on the charger slot, 4 I believe are for data transfer and the 5th being the one that draws power (charges the phone)
Have you tried transferring data from PC to Phone and see how that pans out ?
Its possible to replace the USB port, Ive seen a few threads about this on XDA, A quick search should chuck out some results.
But as mentioned above, Try to claim under warranty first, if you have it, or pay the Service centre to do it if you dont feel confident enough to do it yourself.
I think I recall someone with a similar issue and it cost him / her $60 for USB replacement (convert that in to your currency)
If you have a friend with a Note or a phone that fits the Note's battery you could always charge your battery in that phone and place it into yours until you get it fixed.
IF YOU MUST charge your Note ( you could if you intend to get a new USB slot) I would suggest to charge only via USB - as in charging from your PC / Laptop / TV / PS3 etc. As this will not draw as much current as it would coming directly from the mains supply!

First of all, I can confirm that no pins are broken or bent, everything looks normal, it also seems to be charging better, as I centred the metal strip in the charge port.
As for warranty, well I didn't purchase any extended warranty or insurance, however, the standard warranty lasts 2 years.

Basically, the only thing that I'm covered for is "handset breakdown"
My phone is in perfect condition, and no pins are broken or bent (as discovered on closer inspection)
So do you class charging issues as "handset breakdown" or not?
I may purchase a new charger, just in case the issue is with the charger, and not the phone,

Yeah I'm 90% there's no damage to the pins on the charge port, and it seems to be charging now, slowly at least,
I've centered the metal strip as best as I can, (inside the charge port)
I'll leave it to charge now for a while, as I'm not sure if it's fixed or not
Then I'll try another charger if it doesn't work
If all else fails, I'll try getting it repaired under warranty
(although that's more of a last resort, as it will take a few weeks to get my phone back)
does anyone know if the standard galaxy s2 charger will work on the note?
I don't have it on me now, although I could borrow it from a friend
I know its an official samsung charger, although not sure if it's the usb or the other kind.
I'll let it charge for a while, then I'll try transferring data from the laptop, to make sure the pins are fine,

1st of all: if you go poking around in the usb port with a metal screwdriver, take out the battery first. Not only will it avoid shortcutting and maybe blow a fuse inside the phone, but it will also protect you from an exploding battery when shortcutted !

[Q] Battery won't charge - NOW COMPLETELY DEAD

Yesterday when I was charging my one week old Note 3 I noticed it stopped charging in the middle of a charge (the red constant LED started flashing).
I turned the phone off, took out the battery. Turn on charging but did not restart the phone.
Early this morning I got up and the battery was completely drained with no LED indication on the phone.
THE PHONE IS DEAD.
I've tried my old charger to my SGS2, charging via computer, nothing. It wont charge.
Since I've already installed CF-root and CWM recovery i guess my warranty is void, so I'm REALLY DESPERATE right now...!
Perhaps it is simply the battery that has died ?
I know the NFC is in he battery so perhaps its fried itself somehow?
If you haven't got a warranty still maybe just buy another battery (make sure it's original for the NFC)
If the phone is having an issue with charging you could pick up a new battery and the separate USB charger.
I bought the Samsung USB charger and it took about 2 weeks to come from South Korea to Perth, Australia (everything takes longer to get delivered to Perth).
Oh yeh I bought the charger and phone separately as it worked out cheaper...
You may even be able to pick one up locally ?

Well, I don't know if it's related, but I used NFC when connected my Galaxy Gear for the first time yesterday..
That sounds like too much of a coincidence... maybe it did fry itself? or it was faulty to begin with.
I'd grab a spare battery and charger and if that works I'd take the old battery back and say you want a replacement under warrant. I doubt there's a Knox trigger for the battery
Let us know how you go, it may help someone else later down the track.

Yes, I'll try with a new battery. I just measured the current voltage with a multimeter and it says 2.78V in the battery...
I'll post as soon as I get some news, and please, any other suggestions it's highly appreciated!
I'd try a secondary battery also, and a different charger with it, maybe your power at home spiked and fried it. Maybe it is the NFC issue.
As for warranty, can't really see Samsung (notorious for bad batteries lately!! swelling, and S4 issues) not replacing it even if it has a custom recovery on it. Custom recovery doesn't mess up power wattage unless your changed your CPU Voltage.
did you do anything to the usb charging port? 2 years ago I was cleaning my Note 1 and I sprayed the pressured air from can into the usb charging port on the bottom of the phone. (stupid idea) The air when let out of can has little bit of moisture in it and it got into the phone and damaged the charging module. ( together with microphone)
I was experiencing exactly the same problem as you described, battery died overnight, I was not able to charge the phone at all and I had to replace the whole charging module and month later even the motherboard. Very costly cleaning....
I had a similar issue with a S3, at first the phone refused to charge with the supplied cable, so, I used a sony cable, that worked fine for 2 or 3 months, then, the charging time began to incresse, at last it wouldnt charge, ans eventually the phone ran out of juice, I had my S3 rooted, cwm and cooked rom, took it to my carrier and they fixed it, faulty connector replaced, in the S3 forums many had issues with cables and onboard connectors, now with my note3, first thing I did was to get a wireless charger, it takes twice thr time to charge, but you only put the phone on top the charger, no connection, so you can charge as many time you want without wearing off the conector, in your case, looks like is the conector, take it for warranty service, in my case it didnt matter if it was rooted or else, the connector is a hardware issue, so they honnored the warranty, and, finally, get yourself a wireless charger, it is really nice to charge cable free, mine cost 35 dlls, worth every cent
Just because you're rooted doesn't mean your warranty is void. It depends on whether your provider will notice and if they did whether they would care.

5. Mother of all..! Changed motherboard with the new phone. Voilá! Charging even with old battery.
Well, it looks like something really bad happened with the motherboard. And I haven't barely used the phone - but rooted it.
I will definitely root again but perhaps with "universal root de la Vega" instead of CF root. Don't really know what's best.

could this be relatd to knox warranty / burned efuse?
I'd just like to ask...destroying the phone because it's rooted seems to be a overreaction, if it's the case...

I'd would like to know that too! It happened after first NFC connection with my Galaxy Gear if it's any clue.
My battery is going along the same lines, it is getting worse and worse and worse everyday since MJ7 update. Today it started showing 'Battery Disconnected' error and dropping the phone from about 2 feets height fixed it. I mean, i charge full, and next thing you know, it's down to 90%. I thought it was calibration at first, but no no it wasn't! The thing is i don't know if a new battery will fix and i wouldn't like throwing that money away for no reason.

My advise is if you can flash in a stock rom then do so and then take it back for warranty repairs. I dont think they really check the knox warranty void flag so if you are lucky then you may get a repaired or new/refurbished note 3 that is actually working.

Battery/Charging Issues (Nexus 4)

I am having problems with my Nexus 4.
History, replaced screen after phone was knocked out of my hand, probably damaged battery while trying to remove it, but everything worked once it was back together.
Screen broke again, and while working on that, I noticed the battery had swollen so ordered a replacement of eBay.
All back together now, but.
1 Phone does not state "charging" when connected to AC or USB charging, although the battery icon has the lightning bolt in it and the %charge does not drop while messing with the phone.
2 Phone does charge using wireless, but slowly, and status swaps back and forth between charging and not charging and the % will move from e.g. 40% to 35% as it says charging or not charging.
3 USB works for connection to PC.
I charged the new battery overnight, wirelessly. It got to about 90%, so slow charging, but seems to work. Phone is usable, everything seems to work. I connected it to PC and was able to use Nexus Root Toolkit to backup, the reset the phone, no change in charging behavior.
Booting into safe mode made no difference either. So it seems it is not software/firmware/apps that are causing the problem?
I guess next step is to open it up again and remove and remake all connections and check contact posts? Should I order a third battery? Or a new motherboard?
I searched here, but could not find anyone with the same problem.

Opening and rechecking connections and coating with contact cleaner has made no difference.
Phone typically needs Volume Down and Power button pressed to get it to start, then Power Button to select start option, then seems to run okay.
Battery still not reaching 100% charged, generally 70-80% after a full night off, using wireless (my Nexus 5 charges happily on same charger).
Ordered a cheap battery from China, not really expecting that to be the problem, but no other clues or suggestions for now.
Any update?
My battery is ****e now, lasts 3-4 hours and I need to turn off the phone and charge. It takes 4+ hours to charge when switched on. Charging via the PC you can forget it, it drains the battery if anything!
I'm thinking of buying the battery on eBay and doing my research on how to fix myself.
Phone not switching on and Battery issues

I have been facing quick drainage of my Nexus 4 battery since past few months. Recently I had been keeping it on charge almost the whole day, and a full charge would last only 2-3 hours! Further, the charging was taking a lot of time too.
Today, my phone had already switched off due to low battery when I put it on charger. After the white charging icon appeared for a few seconds, the phone wasn't charging at all. I have tried 4 different chargers, but to no avail.
Can someone help me? Is there a guide on how to change the battery?
Any help and urgent help appreciated!

It's possible some hardware was damaged when you took apart and put back together your phone. The USB board is a possibility, as is the back cover itself. These parts are pretty inexpensive, if you want to try buying a replacement, but that's just a shot in the dark.

Buy a new battery. Li-ion batteries are only good for a few hundred cycles or so (~500 cycles is the expected lifetime), and the N4 isn't exactly the best in battery life, so you can reach the point where your battery turns to crap within a year or so (or less).
Go to ifixit.com and look at the teardown. All you need to replace the battery is a T5 TORX driver (for the screws at the bottom), something thin and plastic (like a guitar pick or a plastic knife - they do make professional tools for this) to pry the back cover off, a tiny phillips screwdriver (like for eyeglasses) for the battery screws, and something to pry the old battery off of the adhesive holding it in. Double sided cellophane tape works fine for keeping the new battery in. When prying the cover off, go slowly. A little at a time, don't rush or force things. Or you might flex too much and crack the back glass. Don't forget to take out the SIM tray first.

Time for a new battery. See above.
My battery have started to swollen up a bit but not alot (around 1mm or less, but it is noticeable when not in a case, it can wiggle a bit from side to side but not alot at all).
I have already ordered a new battery if it is expanding more, but yet battery life is pretty good in standby but not getting more then 3hours of SOT. but since im mostly using the N4 for email's and texting its not a problem for me to get through a full day.
I'm having the exact same issue but I've never taken the phone apart. In the 20 minutes its been off charger it's dropped 11% screen off in my pocket. It also gets hot and shuts off.

That could be software/ROM related. It sounds like somethings keeping your phone going full blast instead of letting it idle.
Yup, trying going back to full stock (should always be first step if possible), and then you can go from there. If it doesn't happen, than it was a software issue, and if it still does than it is definitely a hardware issue. Best of luck.

With a swollen battery I strongly recommend you stop actively using the device. Swollen batteries can explode and that would not be good at all. I advise you to please not use the device anymore.

Third battery (original, suspect replacement, now China sourced replacement) has been working well, phone back together and preforming as new for the last few months

Won't turn on, no lights, but warms up when plugged in.

As the title says, Phone won't turn on. There are no led lights at all. It does get warm after being plugged in for a little. I had jrkruse's hybrid_bra1 stock safetynet samsungpay...... rom on it. It was rooted. Very minimal processes running. I actually had basically everything stopped and greenify on. Phone was around 40% battery. I plugged it into charger, took my dog outside, showered real fast, washed a few dishes, then came back in to room within 15 minutes to my phone being dead and hot. It's never got this hot before even while rooted and plugged in with this rom on it. I have never had it get that hot. Was just formatted the day before and really bare but, that is what happened.
A couple battery apps I had put the batteries remaining life capacity at around 60%. It held a charge poorly. Even for 60% capacity it felt weak, considering how little I did on it lately. I am thinking the battery may have took a crap but unsure because it warms up when it is plugged in. I plan on getting a battery soon since they are inexpensive and replace it to try it out.

You say your battery was already outworn, It may have died. I think you should try with a new battery, Or take it to a technician who can test the phone's hardware to see if there is anything else broken
i've only had one similar case with an s3, which would turn of at random % of battery. But when plugged turned on. I replaced the battery and it worked fine then

funny story....
The mic in my Nubia Red Magic broke and I sent that back to hong kong for repairs like 20 days ago. Before the Red Magic, I used this galaxy s7 edge my friend gave me. I gave it back when I got the Red Magic and told him to sell it or something. Not much later, decided to buy it back off of him for $200 to give to my mother. She loved it. I had the gs7 edge with me exploring prepaid provider options for my mom when the Red Magic mic broke. So then I decided to borrow the edge from her till my phone got back and few days later I break this one too..
I feel naked without a phone for so long haha

I have the same rom, with charging issues. I don't think its the rom causing it. The s7e are getting old and the batteries are taking a toll with the age. My phone will charge up to 81 at night and stay there. I get better results with wireless charging so i just top my phone off during the day with my wireless charger. There is a code to reset the battery's internal memory, if i find the link on how to do it I will post here for you.

Thanks for reply and alright let me know if you find out. My phone had no problem charging to 100% Its just the 100% on the status bar wasnt 100% of the 3600 capacity from wear. My friend's also does the same thing as yours except his he cant charge more than like 24% haha. He just uses it as a plugged in music player in car.... I am getting battery in the mail tomorrow and will see what I can do.

A little late, sorry. lol.
Thanks for suggestion, however, I may have worded my statement incorrectly. I meant to say that My phone would charge to 100% and the status bar displayed it as 100% but, the health and total capacity of the battery in mah was not the maximum 3600 or so due to simple wear and tare. It isn't apparent within any stock android feature however, battery monitoring apps like accubattery gather statistics after several charging sessions and estimate the current mah capacity. Mine was much lower than the default oem stated value of 3600. So my battery could be charged 100% but the 100% is really only 2400 mah lol. It was obvious either way by noticing that after my time using it and the previous owner's bad charging over night habits, that the battery was gradually needing charged more often lol..
I did read about the calibration method before when I was first looking into the battery issues. It seems it is more often done after a new battery is installed.
I screwed up a new battery install at the last second. I had to stop due the tiniest little round metal piece coming off from a very light swipe of my plastic spudger.
It was a very small wire connector piece. Unbelievably irritating. I didn't even finish because I doubt it would work properly. I beleive it is for the rf cable or something not sure. The red one on the left bottom side of the logicboard/motherboard whatever. There are three of them.
I took it apart and put it together a couple times prior to this and in a hurry it popped off and I couldnt find it. I couldnt find out the exact part name online so I could buy one and solder it back on. I did find a site/ supplier that has a plethora of them though. They are tiny coaxial connectors/pins. I didn't look through them all but there are 6,000 some listed under coaxial connectors (RF). https://www.digikey.com/products/en/connectors-interconnects/coaxial-connectors-rf/437?k=coaxial pin
I haven't gotten around to asking samsung or the digikeys support if they could help me find out which it is. They have different sizes and frequency ratings or speeds and such. The phone is packed away until I manage to figure out which pin to buy or if I pull 80$ or so out of my behind and buy a whole new motherboard logic board haha.

Device temperature too low, can't charge oneplus 5

I own an OnePlus 5 that I have used for a couple of months with stock OOS and locked bootloader and unrooted. I have always used an original dash charger and cable. However, few days ago the phone became unresponsive to the charger and after the battery died. When I reconnect the charger now, it gives a message that device temperature too low, can not charge and when I turn it on the battery shows 50% charge when I remove the charger it turns off after a short while. The phone didn't suffer any drop or water damage or any other kind of accident. The phone is not under warranty so, I need to find a way to charge the phone. I have searched for the problem on many forums and some point out to a faulty temperature sensor on the battery and others point to the daughter charging board while some say there's an issue with the motherboard. Is there anyone who could troubleshoot the problem precisely.
Or, Is there a way, to flash a custom kernel which could turn off the temperature sensor on the battery, if it's there.
Also, needed to know that will the problem go away after a battery replacement?
I have wiped cache and data, downgraded the phone from Pie to Oreo and nothing seemed to work. Some people suggested putting it to rest for 24 hours, I also did that, but to no avail.
seems like the thermistor in the battery died ,i suggest to swap the battery with a new one

Are you sure that the temperature sensor is located on the battery or inside the battery? Because, if I buy a new battery that would mean I can not get it replaced if the issue is not with the battery.
I have to order it online as the battery is not available in the local market.

yes sir ,that why batteries have more than 2 pins ?..swap it and you will be good to go

Sorry for being overly cautious about the issue. I have searched some forums where people couldn't get the issue resolved even after changing the battery.
Still, I am thankful regarding your input and replies.
But is there, a custom kernel available where the battery sensor could be bypassed for the cell to charge?
Before buying anything or opening the phone yourself contact OnePlus. If the phone is under warranty probably they will take care of it. (even if, many times, the battery doesn't have the same warranty as the rest of the phone)

i haven't faced this issue on the op5 ,but in the past i have faced it in other phones (not charging with battery is too cold message)either way a replacement is pretty cheap i would go for it ..(i don't think it's a good idea trying to dissable it ,the same sensor is responsible for the current that the battery is receiving so i don't think you can dissable it at all because the phone will not know at what amps to charge the battery,i bet it won't charge or extremely it will become galaxy note 7 bomb :silly: )

Dear the problem is that the phone is not covered under any warranty. I purchased it locally from a shop that doesn't provide warranty for any phone. I live in Pakistan, I tried contacting OnePlus but seems like they don't have any official stores in Pakistan. I guess, there's a service centre with whom they have partnership for services.
I guess, I have to contact them.

Hi, just curious about the update on this one? I've also encountered the same issue on my OP5 and still waiting for the battery replacement I ordered hoping that it is a faulty battery.
I didn't have the low temperature issue but my charging port did start to fail so I replaced it and the battery last month. The hardest part is getting the back off. The screen snaps in much tighter than most phones I've worked on which were glued shut.
I got my parts from E-Trade supply but I never will again. The charging port I got for an iPhone 6 I'm repairing was defective and they would only credit the part and not the $22 in shipping I paid them. They eventually did, but only because I bought several items over the past few years and I started putting up bad reviews on them. Never again.
The parts for the OnePlus 5 were okay although the brand new battery is only at 91% health. The original 16 month old one was 83% still a gain.
Hey brother, did the battery replacement fix the issue?? I have been having the same problem since today morning.
[Update] Was able to bring my OP5 to a local tech who is trusted to fix OnePlus devices but unfortunately the problem on my phone is with the motherboard. Tech already tried replacing the battery as well as the charging port to no avail, so I may have to stick with my OnePlus 5 permanently connected to a power source while I wait for the upgrade(OnePlus 7) to be released.
The same thing with me, I trying now to fix this, but... I can,t

After almost a month with the local tech, he was able to order a spare part for the issue with my OP5 motherboard. Fingers crossed hoping that it will be fixed within this week, it already cost me $100 :crying: I'll update on which part needs to be replaced if the issue is with the motherboard itself.

[UPDATE] A Battery replacement by OnePlus solved my problem. It also fixed certain other issues I was having like 3hr SOT, random shutdowns before reaching 0% etc. Cost me ₹1600 (around $22.5)

Man I paid about the same for the battery and replaced it myself. But at least I didn't have to send it away. Unfortunately my only other phone (HTC one M8) doesn't work on my carrier.
[Update] My OP5's alive and kicking again. It cost me $40 for the board to be fixed, $60 for the front glass replacement.

Sad to hear this is still going on with OnePlus phones. I had this problem with my 3T. Replaced everything, except the motherboard. I'm figuring it's that, but at this point I don't care. A replacement is anywhere from $80 to $150. You could buy a new 3T outright for that price.
