Okay, weird problem here. I'd like to unlock the bootloader on the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 2019, but can't seem to recreate the blue screen asking if I'd like to enter download mode or unlock the bootloader. I've read that I should press both volume keys and plug in the device while holding the keys until that blue screen appears. However, for me this doesn't do anything except "boot" the charging thing (where you see the current battery percentage), I held the keys for about 30 seconds but didn't get anything different. When I press Power + Volume up I get that Android Recovery screen, but can't seem to unlock the bootloader from there either. I tried rebooting to bootloader, but that just gave me the download mode instantly (on a black screen with my tablet logo) - this way I also had no choice to unlock the bootloader. Anyone know what I should do here? I'm kind of stuck
Edit: fastboot oem unlock just tells me it's waiting for device, however adb can find my device (OEM unlocking and USB debugging is on)

With the tablet off, plug the cable into a PC only. (not a charger) Then, while holding down both vol up and down, plug the cable into the tablet. After a couple of second, the screen should appear with the unlock option instructions.

I am doing that, but the tablet just shows the charging animation that appears when the device is off. By the way, the device is on Android 11, is that maybe the problem somehow?

It has nothing to do with what version of Android you are on. It should enter the download mode before Android even starts to load. Have you tried using another USB cable? They can be very touchy about detecting the data connection rather than just power. As I said, I don't have a 290, but on my 500 it helps to connect to the PC via a USB 2.0 hub rather than directly to the PC.

I now tried 3 or 4 different cables with no luck. I'm still assuming that it has something to do with the software, and I noticed today that the tablet actually runs OneUI Core, whatever that means.

Hi,
I have a MT3G that my brother likes a lot, so he bought a second-hand MT3G on craigslist and asked me to help him make it work, since it is apparently broken.
On power-up it goes to a screen with an icon of a software box with a yellow arrow coming out of it and pointing down to a phone. Is this the "recovery screen" icon?
I put SAPPIMG.NBH on the root of a FAT formatted 2GB Kingston microSD card (the card works fine in my MT3G) and tried each of these key combos after removing and reinserting the battery:
hold voldown while click power = still the same logo and no progress bar
hold home while click power = same thing
hold back while click power = same thing
I also turned the 2GB card into a "gold card" using instructions on XDA and put on it the sappimg.zip that is supposed to fix perfectSPL. Re-did all key combos above. Same logo.
The only thing that results in something different is when I hold the trackball while powering on, and then I get a blue power light and blank screen.
Plugging the phone into the computer with USB with the power off and battery in shows the orange charging light, but the phone is never recognized as a USB device when it is powered on and connected.
Any help would be appreciated. I thoroughly searched the XDA boards and tried as much as I could. I don't think my brother can get his money back from the guy who sold it to him, and I have already yelled at him for not testing before he walked away with the phone.
Thanks!
the only thing I can think of not sure why right now this is only thing coming to me is while in the screen press home and back for a while or, hold some and power for alot longer even after the screen pops up just keep holding for at least a minute... another thing is hold home and power while inserting the battery.... also tell us what happens when you try to power the phone normally
Thanks so much for your ideas, mt3g
I tried home and back for a couple of minutes and still just stay stuck at the box-arrow-phone icon.
I then pulled the battery and held home and power for 2 minutes, and then released the power button but held the home for another 2 minutes, and then let go of home and waited another 5 minutes, but still stuck at box-arrow-phone icon.
Then I tried holding home and power while inserting the battery and it still stayed at the box-arrow-phone icon.
When I power the phone normally it still just comes up with the box-arrow-phone icon.
Any other ideas?
Thanks again.
Either a paperweight or a BRICK!!
your brother's been scammed... If you can't get into fastboot or recovery the device is considered bricked (well, not "techincally" as HTC could still fix it but you can't ). The guy apparently tried to flash an incompatible SPL (or something went wrong during the process) and then sold the brick...
the only way to fix this is to hold volume down when phone is turned off, then turn on the phone but keep holding volume down! this should boot it into fastboot mode, if it doesnt then its bricked.
Have you tried downloading the Android SDK and running adb devices while the phone is plugged in? You could possibly run a logcat as well and see what the phone is doing.
Thanks for the suggestions, Dixi789! No combination of buttons will get me to fastboot or any other screen than the one with the box-arrow-phone icon, and when I plug the phone into the computer via USB it is never recognized as a USB device, so the Android SDK tools don't see it as being connected.

My HTC MAGIC A6161 from Vodafone
one day the phone comes up with the Vodafone boot screen only and i have only access to FASTBOOT mode and nothing else
does someone know a way to get the original NBH file as it seems the only way to unbrick it so far and of course none of the FASTBOOT commands work and none of the ADB commands work too
can anyone help pleaaaaassssseee
Same thing here! Cant get into Recovery or Fastboot . it Just stayed on the MT3G Green Boot Screen
So, I've been trying to restore my phone after some modding gone bad...but now, I've gotten to the point where I can't even get to the green battery screen. My phone won't turn on, and it'll only display this screen with a phone icon connecting to a yellow triangle which is connecting to a computer.
Has anyone gotten this before?
More importantly, is this fixable? Or am I gonna have to file an insurance claim for a "phone that got dropped in a lake" this week?
Use the search option. It will do wonders. This has happened plenty of times before. ODIN can fix the problem.
1. Take out battery, put it back in. (to turn the phone fully off)
2. Don't turn it the phone on!
3. Plug the phone into your PC, do not hit the power button!
4. See if the phone shows anything on the screen
IF the phone screen does show the battery charger or something else on the screen after being plugged in without you hitting the power button, so far so good.
5. Now while it's on like this, hold the volume up and volume down buttons.
6. Hold the power button as well as the volume buttons until the screen goes black.
7. As soon as the screen goes black, let go of the power button! But DON'T let go of the volume buttons!

The best luck i had getting my phone into download mode was pulling the battery, putting it back in. holding vol up+down and plugging it in. instead of going to charging, it goes to download immediately.
All messages related to "3 hardware key combo to get back to download mode so that you can use ODIN to restore", or "use adb to get to download mode so you can use ODIN" only work when the 3 hardware key combo work in the first place, or your PC can recognize the phone for adb to work
I am one of the unlucky one that does not have this 3 hardware key combo working, and am also in this sad state (Phone-!-PC). As a result, PC is not seeing the phone, so adb is out of the question right now
My phone has been like this since last Thursday (a failed attempt to use ODIN to flash JAC's OC/Ext4 kernel). All my reading so far does not give me a fuzzy feeling that I can ever get back to Download mode (ON MY PHONE)
I called my carrier for a replacement, and it should arrive this morning...
If someone can actually get to download mode WITHOUT the 3 hardware key combo OR adb access, I would love to know how
Had the EXACT same problem. Here is how I fixed it:

Glad that this work for you
But not for me, for some unknown reason
No SIM
No SD Card
Pulled battery out
Make sure screen is off
Put battery in
Hold Volume up/down
plug USB cable to phone
plug USB cable to PC
Bam! Phone-!-PC
Update: Got my replacement phone.
Have SIM in
Have SD Card in
Leave Battery in
Turn off Phone
Hold Volume up/down
plug USB cable to phone
plug USB cable to PC
Instant Download mode!
Just as I read, it's a luck of the draw whether you have a TMobile Vibrant that has the 3 button key combo disabled. My first one doesn't have it. My second one does
Ok so after the fiasco of dealing with the first 7 that came as a 16 gig unit and not a 32 I got the replacement. Now this one is having issues right out of the box, granted it's a refurbished box...lol. The new one will not boot unless you plug in the USB. You can press and hold the power button till your blue in the face the thing will not boot. Plug in the USB and the Google logo pops up and it boots right up. Once it's booted the power button will wake the unit just fine so it obviously works. This was right out of the box I have since let it update in hopes the might solve it but no. When it arrived it was fully drained with no battery life could that have done anything? I popped the rear cover and checked both the ribbon cable for power and sound as well as the power plug, both were in place and tight. Here is another weird one that has me wondering. When you do plug in the USB (if it's turned off ) while holding the volume down button it will go right into bootloader without having to hold the power button.
So now is this a possible problem with the power button, mother board,or possibly the usb port? Could it be a bootloader/ firmware/software issue? I guess I will be having to send back a second RMA.
Edit....Since I forgot to mention it. It will work normally once booted. You can unplug it and it will function properly till you power it down at which point you have to plug it in to get it to boot. You don't even have to hit the power button it will just start. It's like when the battery drains and it powered down on it's own then when you plug it in it auto boots, it's like that.
Its battery problem.....It cant give enough energy to start the whole system.

No once it boots it will run just fine without it being plugged in. You just have to plug it in to get it to boot then you can unplug it do what ever you want. If you power it down then you have to plug it back it to get it to boot. You don't even have to hit the power button it will just start.
I plug mine to usb to boot it up intonthe bootloader once it has completely died and I let it sit in recovery for a couple of minutes to get some juice in it so it can boot up normally. I can't get into the recovery fromnthe bootloader without it being plugged in to usb first, itll just sit at the google screen

@Will Badger
Search here (in the N7 forums) for
"fastboot oem off-mode-charge"
If someone used the refurb tab for a car install, that would explain why it boots as soon as you apply power to the tablet. It is a toggle that you can turn on/off.
Thanks but that didn't work. Hit the command and it said it was already enabled. So I disabled it then re-enabled it and still no go on booting up with just the power button.

I thought I was sugesting that if it was on, (1) you turn it off (0). From the way you replied above I can't tell if you actually tried it in both possible states. Maybe you did, but I can't tell from how you wrote that reply above.
Anyway, I'm not positive that's what is going on ... just throwing it out as a suggestion as it seems closely related to the symptoms you describe.
“fastboot oem off-mode-charge 0” makes the unit power on the instant its connected to AC. “fastboot oem off-mode-charge 1” returns to normal state. it was already 1. So I put it to 0 then back to 1 but it didn't help. As much as this is going in a car and 0 would be better I still want a fully functioning tablet as it will be removable. So when I gave it the command it told me that charge mode was enabled. Sorry for the confusion.
I'm going to try flashing a factory bootloader on it and see if that helps maybe the current one is corrupt or something.

Well flashed a factory image and bootloader and still no change...it's getting RMAed and that will be the second one. Hopefully third time is a charm.

Again, this reads like you never tested it in the other state - you toggled it back into the same state that it was already in to begin with without ever testing it in the alternate configuration. (At least that's the way I am parsing what you wrote both times).
I poked around a little just know - I couldn't get a crystal-clear interpretation of whether "1" or "0" causes the boot-on-power application at the USB connector.
Anyway, if you didn't try it, it might be worth 2 minutes of your time.
Apologies in advance if I am mis-reading what you said.
Tried in both modes. 0 is for powering on with USB and 1 is normal charge mode.
hi. well, i expected this and im doomed.... i had my phone in the fastboot mode and i tried everything i could. i tried the solution and now what happened is the phone is dead.
what happens now is well nothing. it does not power on, it does not go to download mode, it does not go to recovery, it does not even go to the fastboot mode.
when i connect to pc, via usb cable, only thing that comes on my pc is multiple like 10 new drives and it asks me to format them before use. the screen turns on but only show black color. it does not even show LG logo. only black color. when i remove usb and press and hold power button phone turns off. its not even charging.
can any one tell me any solution to this?
See in general there is a thread. If you see multiple partitions then its still fixable. See the thread from no download mode etc as title

Agreed - I've also experienced this. The phone doesn't power down if you're still connected via USB, so make sure you've unplugged it, and then ensure that you're powered down by holding the power button for a while. Then, while holding down VolUp, connect the USB cable. You may need to try this a few times.
Anyone have a link to a video showing how to use the power button to put this thing into fastboot/recovery?
I have a unresponsive unit that I want to flash. Seems like I can't get it into recovery but I'm not sure if I'm doing it correctly.
Here are my steps:
- Unplug everything from shield and unplug power from wall
- Plug in USB OTG cable from computer to shield tv (no lights from shield at this point)
- Plug in power cable to shield tv (power still unplugged from wall, no change to shield)
- Hold power button on shield tv for 3 seconds (nothing happens on shield, no lights or indication)
- Let go of power button and plug in power adapter to wall (light on shield turns on at this point)
- Nothing happens, no HDMI output and no indication from PC that a device is connected.
Any help?
FYI from nVidia website:
Code:
HW method:
- Disconnect power cable
- Insert USB OTG cable and make sure to connect other end to a host PC
- Connect power cable to SHIELD
- Quickly start pressing power button for ~3 seconds
- Do not hold the button and connect power supply afterwards
- HDMI TV should be always connected to SHIELD
I've booted mine over 100 times and only got in to work once, and can't reproduce the results. I have posted a similar thread, and couldn't find anything, but I'm terrified of something causing an unbootable device again because of this reason. If I find anything else to help out, I'll let you know, but my best advice is just keep trying, a lot. Don't quote me here, bit I think when I got it to boot sucessfully, I wasn't holding the button, I was tapping it for 3 seconds. Fairly quickly, but not super fast tapping. Some users report holding it works, but that didn't seem to for me.
Its a ***** to do with the hardware buttons but I have done it when I had a bootloop. If you can get it to boot normally its far easier to do it via adb "adb reboot bootloader". And if your rooted you can just use a sideloaded reboot manager app.
Yes doing it with a rebooting app or by connecting to a computer is the way to go.

It's not responding, so they basically need to recover a soft brick, which is why I'm going to assume that they posted here. Someone needs to figure out a better trick, or they need a better method for any successor to this. Especially since it supports fastboot oem unlock.

i hope nvidia put a timer trick or something to boot it in recovery mode ,maybie hold the button some secs.
maybie you will find some info in the shield documentation?
edit:found something i guess :
HW method:

- Insert USB OTG cable and make sure to connect other end to a host PC
- Connect power cable to SHIELD
- Quickly start pressing power button for ~3 seconds
- Do not hold the button and connect power supply afterwards

Alternative method:
- Perform software shutdown on SHIELD by holding Power button for 10 seconds
- Connect USB OTG cable to SHIELD
- Start pressing power button for 3 seconds
- HDMI TV should be always connected to SHIELD
then you can use nvidia full recovery images to flash the shield to factory firmware.

I got it to work with the hardware (plugging in the power cable) method as mine was in a bootloop. I found it difficult because it hard to know exactly where the power button was because its not a raised button. Once I figured out the specific location of the power button I could do it reasonably consistently, like 1 in every 3 attempts. Of course your device may just be faulty unfortunately.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the power button is the whole thing. If I touch anywhere on the button at all, it'll put my shield to sleep, or wake it. That being said, I could have a faulty device as you have stated. I'd really like someone to put a video on youtube of a sucessfull run just to try to match it as close as possible, because 1/. runs is much better than my 1/100 or so runs.
No,it is just the nvidia logo,it is written in the manual and on the plastic cover when you un box it.

Is there a visual cue for holding for 6 seconds? I noticed the NVIDIA splash screen appears right around 2.5-3 seconds, is that too late or right when I should begin holding power?
What worked for me was letting the unit sit unplugged WITHOUT the OTG cable for about 10 or 15 minutes. I then prepared myself to plug the ac adapter back in and almost immediately pressing the 'on' button thereafter. Got to the bootloader and was able to recover from there.
According to the Nvidia Shield information page, you plug the computer into the Shield's micro usb. Unplug the Shield's power. Wait like 10 seconds or so. Plug it back in. As soon as you see the light come on, wait for about 2 secs. Then hold down the power button till the bootloader comes up. It should come up within 6 secs, maybe sooner. That's it. Basically like what scorpio16v quoted. What Nvidia doesn't tell you, is that it doesn't have to be plugged into your computer. For example, I was able to get my Shield TV to bootloader using this built in hardware method by plugging it into my OG Shield via otg adapter on the micro usb cable.
Saw this on the Shield User Guide:
Reset Using NVIDIA Button on SHIELD
To access the fastboot menu:
1.
Turn off your SHIELD.
2.
Unplug the power cable from your SHIELD..
3.
Connect your SHIELD to your PC/Mac/Linux machine's micro USB port.
4.
Plug the power cable back into your SHIELD.
5.
Wait 2 seconds, and then hold the NVIDIA button for 5-6 seconds until you see the fastboot menu on the display.
Here's a link to the guide
