I bought this phone like few months ago. When I held it for first time and used for few days I was completely charmed. For some time, this was the best android phone ever created for me but right now it's not. Why is that? Maybe because EMUI is a piece of trash. This is literally one of the worst android skins ever created, along with other ****ty chinese skins of course. The problems are not lack of app drawer or other generic and dumb issues people have about emui, this skin is broken to the core. Made by monkeys with brain damage. I tried all available android version for this phone and all of them have some annoying issues. In other words, this phone is unusable and it shouldn't be because it's not cheap. I'm a power user but constantly fiddling with a phone to make some basic functionality work is annoying even for me. Issues I experienced by firmware version:
- Notifications stops working as soon as phone enter doze (B152) and no, disabling doze is not a fix. Disabling a core system functionality which can be used to save phone from garbage google services doing havoc in the background is not a fix,
- Google backup transport constantly wakes up modems, sometimes every one second, sending very small data batches and completely decimating battery. Sometimes it does this for few minutes and sometimes it does it for hours. It doesn't matter how many google account I have or how many applications I have it happens every freaking time. On every single firmware version. And of course, backup disabled, sync also (all firmware versions)
- Doze is useless on Mate 8, doze is great because it fixes (actually it doesn't fix anything, it's jus workaround) horrible android battery life in standby. Does it works on Mate 8? Of course not ! Because dumb Huawei programmers added every single google service and app to permament whitelist which renders doze useless and main doze feature is ability to block ****ty google services (every version except B560+)
- Incosistent battery life (extreeeeeemeeeely incosistent battery life), same amount of apps in the background, same amount of notifications and one night - 1 % of battery, another one - 10%, amazing (all firmware versions).
- killing applications in the memory after long time of inactivity (of course killing apps, which shouldn't be killed, added to either protected or not closed apps, depending on version). I leave phone with 5 apps open in the background, at the morning only 1 is left in the memory. What is this? 50$ phone for christ sake?
- propably more smaller issues i forgot.
So is there a way (maybe some magic firmware version) to fix this phone? So instead of being garbage it will be actually useful and not frustrating? If not I'm selling this because I honestly can't remember a phone which annoyed me that much. Since 2006. And no, those are not my issues or I'm not using it wrong. These are well known issues baked deeply into crappy emui source code and "I don't have them" means I don't notice them.
I got this phone a few weeks ago, and I'm also unhappy with it. Specifically, the mirror screen function is super pixelated on my TV and almost unusable. No other Android phone I've used has this problem.
Update to Nougat with Emui 5. It's imho a huge improvement. Very very happy with it. Will never go back to Samsung or HTC.
Sent from my HUAWEI NXT-L29 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I got a DLOO version. Admittedly, had a frustrating time trying to root, debrand. But once done, I'm now on L29C432B320 and using Nova launcher. No issues on usability or battery, etc. As suggested, hopefully EMUI 5 will further enhance the experience.
No problems with mine...that I know of...
I'm 100% stock at this time, had it for about 3 months
L29C185B180
With all the headaches of upgrading at this point, I'll just stick it out a while on the current
build...I don't use the default launcher, but use Nova Prime.
If you have chinese version (AL10, DL00 etc), debrand to 432 and use build 560. Doze works, background apps works, battery life is pretty great and most importantly notification pulldown and notification icons are good.
My Mate 8 has been working fine till now.
B152. Stopped reading there. You won't put any effort in using the inbuilt updater and yet you come here to complain?
B180 and higher has all your problems solved and it's available to all handset versions.
1) Volume controls, seriously google? what are you smoking? Why is it way more difficult to change my ringer volume then it needs to be? why do I need to change media volume if I'm not actually listening to media?
2) Much more professional UI, if I wanted an iPhone I would buy and iPhone, Google might as well called this update "Apple Pie"
3)Much better notification/quick toggles pull down with sub-menus for bluetooth and wifi. Why did Google remove this?
4) Split screen mode is usable again! (Videos play in split screen too!)
5) No need to worry about an OTA rolling and screwing things up, I like the piece of mind that my phone will stay on the final Oreo update until I feel Pie is stable enough (9.1?)
6) Multitasking is faster (although this can be solved with an adb command, the whole concept is still a downgrade.
7) Pie is not used by many people at all, in fact the number of total android devices running Pie is less then 0.1% of android devices Source: https://developer.android.com/about/dashboards/ - We are essentially beta testers even after the developer previews.... Oreo however is up to nearly 20% distribution.
8) Battery life using Franco's Naptime app for aggressive doze gives me insane battery life, Adaptive battery is pretty useless when you use such a powerful app like this one.
9) Adaptive brightness is awful on Pie
10) My clock is where it has been for the past 7 years on Android phones, this notch thing just needs to die. Google needs to add a boolean value in systemUI for the left clock and assign it a true value for phones with a notch, and false with a phone with no notch. Seriously, do this!!!
Now before you guys come in here bringing up security bulletin updates, it's a fair point but I would just like to say that no security update will save you from being a noob, don't download shady apps, don't connect to unsecured public wifi networks, don't browse shady websites and don't click on everything you see. Much like a PC, you can get the latest Windows updates and anti-virus definitions but if your foolish and browse around unsafe and shady websites and installing shady .exe's your going to get yourself in to trouble and no security update will save you. The best security for Android is your brain.

you sure can, unlock your bootloader and install the latest 8.1 Factory Image from July, then relock your bootloader boot up and disable automatic system updates in developer options and hide the OTA notification by long pressing it.

Oh ok interesting. Maybe I was thinking you cannot downgrade from O back to N. I thought google made changes where you cannot downgrade due to security patches or something.
Oreo just has an overall more consistent experience and mature interface.
I never left Oreo for many of the reasons you listed, after researching Pie a bit.
We're stuck in this kinda bad phase of phones right now: manufacturers are removing hardware features to encourage/require additional accessory purchases and forcing obsolescence (or ~$80 for battery replacements), plus new software seems in a lot of ways to be regressing. I mean, if you have a Kit Kat device laying around, boot it up and I swear you'll wonder what the heck has "improved" since that. Imagine a Kit Kat style firmware running on today's fast RAM and processors, with hardware features - removable battery, sd card slot, headphone jack. Excuse me while I wipe up my drool.
I'm sure there are people that want AI and all that jazz, but I also bet there are plenty of us who want a stable, long-lasting dependable phone, and there just aren't many options for that anymore.

Ticker notifications are the best, and can get improved, there is an app in PS if you want them back.
Couldn't agree more with you guys. Pie is just terrible. I'm so happy to be back to oreo. Unlocked bootloader, back to oreo, relocked bootloader and turned off updates. No need to root, I couldn't get better than this and if I did root I'd lose Google pay which is awesome. No need for xda for a long time. Bye bye!
I admit that the battery was worse on the initial roll out of Pie. But I've stuck with it and this is my battery right now in the November update. I don't have or play any games on my phone though. I'm happy with it.
Forgot this screen shot.

Yes.
This is not a Samsung device where a minor mistake when modifying your device could screw up your IMEI number..

you can have the best of both worlds. root + unlocked bootloader + still use (most) apps like google pay that otherwise detect such things. all you need is magisk and to flash a custom kernel that disabled the bootloader check (i use flash kernel)

Thanks for your ROM it was probably my most favorite S4 one.
Also went back to 8.1. Only thing I really miss is the smart rotation option in the dock. What makes it worse is there is a bug in 8.1 where if you enable rotation via quick settings, rotate the device to landscape, rotate back to portrait, then attempt to turn off rotation via quick settings again, the first touch input does not actually toggle the setting, need to press again.
My other observations: Fingerprint sensor seems a little slower, charging sound toggle does nothing (known issue).

1) For me it's much preferred, I can always easily control media volume, which I do 9 out of 10 times, personally. I know that You might want to change the ringer to adapt to situation, but it's obnoxious to do it every time, why not leave it on an average setting or turn on vibrate mode for silent, for once a Android phone has a decent haptic feedback.
2) Go buy a Samsung, if You want "unprofessional". In real world it's called simple and intuitive, and Google IMO seems to be doing this even better than Apple ever did.
... no comment
6) Faster, yeah, but more fiddly, I found the new system more calming and it requires less tapping, and transition between apps and scrolling seemed smoother. But it's not perfect by no means.
...
9) Can't disagree with this one
agreed 100%. My battery life is so much better now that i'm back on oreo than i was on pie. on pie i had to charge 3 times a day when prior to the 9.0 update, i'd easily make it 24 hours no problem. i lost over an hour of screen on time. was pathetic. i'm done with pixels after this phone honestly; google is such garbage now. also incredibly ridiculous i need to run a modded APK to get night sight on oreo because they won't rollout the new apk to oreo when it's clearly all software that was available on oreo. i'm staying on 8.1 until i get a new phone, and with all the BS bugs of 9.0, i'm def not looking forward to 9.0 touchwiz on my work note 8.
Hi
I have just received the update notification that the Oreo 8.1 update is available to download, but when I click to download and install I just get the message....
Download failed,please try again.
My internet connection is fine, and I am not rooted...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My model is TB-870F
Thanks.
Oh well.....I’m stuck with 7.1.1 then it seems lol

I would not be surprised if they paused the OTA rollout. This update caused a lot of mess when I upgraded my 8704X:
1) the notification area went crazy (netguard),
2) I lost application read/write access to my external sdcard (I only had read access to it through the built-in file manager) therefore I had to back up its content, reformat it then restore my files. I figured out it was likely due to a permission issue it would have been barely infeasible to solve without rooting,
3) the system application named after Mobile Services started to install apps I did not want,
4) had to clear both cache & data or reinstall a lot of applications which dysfunctioned after the update.
On the bright side, the update brought:
1) a smoother experience. The overall UI interactions seem less sluggish although not fast enough when compared with a SD835. Digressing: could we get a high-end 8-inch Android tablet any time soon?
2) application startup is fixed. Some of my applications (e.g. hangar, ampere) previously did not start at boot,
3) better integration with password managers thanks to Oreo,
4) native night mode (red light),
5) touchpal 2016 keyboard removal (I could previously only disable it).
Finally, my last concerns are:
1) my tablet still cannot act as a phone. The 8704X model may not be able to place a call or some tricky network conf blocks it or I got a defective model. 4G/LTE data works,
2) Oreo is probably the last upgrade and there is no alternative rom development running,
3) (minor concern) I cannot benefit from Netflix HD streaming despite I never rooted/flashed my system.
To conclude, I really feel depressed considering the Android tablet market.
1) I was never really happy after switching from my Sony Z3 Tablet Compact to Lenovo Tab4 8 Plus. Sure, the later is more powerful and has more storage capacity. But the screen is vastly inferior (blueish, ghost touch) and the development scene does not exist as of yet.
2) there are very few 8-inch tablets worth. The Huawei Mediapad M5 may tick few boxes (slightly faster cpu) but the WiFi/BT issues, limited storage options (32Gb max), average battery runtimes are not convincing.
3) the 10-inch offer may be more tempting if you are willing to accept this format, pay the price, and opt for Samsung proprietary interface (e.g Galaxy Tab S3/S4). You cannot obtain more than 4Gb RAM/64Gb storage though.
4) the Pixel Slate is barely a prototype, most users reporting Android compatibility issues. Intel-centric, indecent price, no 4G/LTE connectivity yet, no external sdcard means you must purchase the Core I7/16Gb RAM/256Gb model.
Apple/IOS jail not being an option, I will keep my tab4 for a few months.
I don't like or have a tablet. I prefer phones for everything. My moto z2 force is my favourite at the moment.
Got the tab 4 for the wife to watch zion on it. Sold a 2018 ipad 9.7 for it as she found it too big and heavy.
Oreo update (S001018) worked for me on TB-8704X, but dm-verity is making me nuts, since I cannot go make a backup of my data partition after boot because of forced encryption, which means I have to lose all my settings and apps whenever I want to restore to a previous state - factory reset - which for me is unacceptable. You cannot install Magisk before this happens, and what is rooting without the ability to back up even good for? So I am patiently waiting for someone to port LineageOS or another custom ROM that can liberate me from this mess. So sick and tired of the stock ROM and its limitations. Go to hell, mandatory boot sec-bullies!
Well.... I'm getting crazy with this crap. I can't access the SD card in the external apps (like Perfect Viewer). I tried to reformat it but problem is still not resolved.
If i knew the update should cause all these issues i wouldn't install it, too late now i guess.
Some issues i encountered:
*Es file explorer - disabled\being uninstalled after start up and my tablet is set for timed startup \ shutdown.
*Issues with built in alarm clock app, could snooze it with a shake and now it doesn't even shows the clock when you open the cover and turning it off is pretty frustrating if you want to turn it off quickly.
*BS player issues connecting to SMB home network pc and also, when skipping files it got stuck and needs to be restarted.
So if you read this before installing the update, I recommend to wait for a better fix.
Hey guys,
Since this is the last major update for our phones, I thought it will be a good idea to have a review discussion as to how Google left 2xl lines with Android 11 (I hope there is one update somewhere in future to iron out any bugs)
So! How is your phone's
1) Performance
2) Battery life
3) Sound (speaker/Bluetooth)
4) Ram management
5) Misc/Any bugs?
Let's have a discussion!
Heres my review:
Wait, its not worth it, yet
Thanks for your time
I was on it for about an hour before i noticed so many apps etc wouldnt work, and really it shouldnt have been so much of a difference that would result in so much breakage...

I'm curious.. What's broke? I've been on 11 since the first beta sign-up started and didn't experience any major problems with my day to day usage. It's about the same on battery and performance as it was on 10.

Nice! I feel the smoothness has increased a bit as i found Android 11 was more smooth than 10 right from the beta phase. Although, I'm kind of disappointed in the whole. Chat bubbles doesn't seem to work and conversation is left to developers to adapt.

For one Migrate, the backup app i use and have for eons, wont restore apps/app data properly, so i would literally have to reinstall everything from scratch. Anyone want to do that for 113 apps? Considering there really isnt that much of a leap under the hood, why are apps, and even simple apps like Migrate...which uses simple scripts to restore, failing.....
There were at least 4 core apps i use that wouldnt work out of the gates. It took clearing the data for them sometimes twice to get them to work. It just turned into a lot of work. Rolled back to 10 and Migrate seamlessly worked as did every app i use.
When you can downgrade and have everything working, whats your takeaway? The upgraded OS isnt up to it yet.
Ill wait for a point release...
Also the repeated prompts to complete setup 3 times, when id already done it, got on my nerves..again, never happened on 10
It did not feel complate, felt rushed, despite however many betas they ran
Sticking with 10, and folks im usually a bleeding edger...i dont give a rats about battery and perfomance if my apps dont work...

Far different experience than I am having.. I even did a fresh install, and Google restored all 180 of my apps and put all my screens back how I had them. No aftermarket backup app needed. All I had to do was make sure my account synced before I wiped.

1) I always clean flash, full wipe. I never dirty flash.....
2) Never used Google for backup, and never will, for starters it doesnt back up data from all apps, only apps that specifically have google backup capability built in - people do not realise that devs have cook that in. Telling people to just use google backup just garauntees theyre going to cry when they realise most of their apps do not backup app data.
So again, my issues with 11 stand

Oh well, I understand your frustration. True, Android 11 is a half baked update. I don't think apart from 2-3 features there is anything. I can consider this a feature drop than a full os upgrade.
Agreed about the Google backup it screwed my backup as well and although I didn't roll back to 10, it was quite frustrating.
Maybe you can update after the last bug update which probably will happen in December.
I'm just hoping that Google don't just stop with the security patches yet
My device never felt so complete and smooth.
Stock rooted 10 -> boot twrp.img -> dirty flash 11 ota.zip -> wipe -> first boot.
Boot twrp.img -> flash debug magic.zip, reboot.
Browse and install canary magic apk.
Only thing I think to notice is the sound seems somewhat distorted/overloaded somewhat, sometimes.
Never in calls.
Battery life and responsiveness improved. It feels less rough on the edges.

I actually felt the sound quality improved. Yes it's more responsive. I'm still testing out the battery life can't say for sure if it improved much.
I'm liking that the keyboard is so smooth now, pops up smoothly
Came from a stock rooted 10 with only TWRP and Magisk installed, was starting to notice some hiccups and slow downs in usage. Decided to clean install which I hadn't done in a while to hopefully regain some performance as well as storage. Phone feels smooth again, haven't noticed any loss of performance or stability. Can confirm that audio seems a bit tuned up, having to set all the volume sliders a bit lower.
My real comments on the process is also more with the Google backup/restore. Since I had dirty flashed basically everything throughout A10 I didn't know what to expect. While it reinstalled all the apps, resetup all the home screens with apps/widgets, wifi passwords, and saved my wallpaper. It didn't save my custom notification/ringtone sounds, bluetooth devices, notification settings (specifically which apps were silenced), and most frustratingly my tasker profiles (my fault for not remembering to back them up). Fortunately, A11 has a new rules section in the settings that can change ringer state based off wifi which is what 3/4 of my profiles did. I have only tested the feature at home so far but it worked great. Had the phone on vibrate, setup a profile that when connecting to home wifi to turn the ringer on... had it connect to wifi and it immediately turned off vibrate and turned it back on when I disconnected wifi. Should do the same thing for work, just wish it had a bluetooth state so I could make a rule for the car.
All in all I'm glad I upgraded early, even though I didn't realize ahead of time the issues with canary magisk and TWRP installed. First attempt worked great, cleaned flashed and immediately installed TWRP, setup the phone/apps, then rebooted to install magisk. This was the bootloop but as soon as I read here the two weren't compatible I was able to reflash the update to remove bootloop. Booted to TWRP to install canary magisk and Elemental Kernel and it's working perfectly so far.
Storage issue
After Android 11 update can't access android/data folder. 3rd party file managers shows access denied. Few games can't be run due to restricted storage access. Does anyone know what's wrong. Can I root Android 11 and downgrade to Android 10. If yes any guidance available online. My Pixel 2 XL is not rooted yet.

Your data folder was encrypted when using the previous version.
How did you upgrade?
If the bootloader is unlocked you could try booting a twrp.img to see if you can access /data.
Disable any pin you may be using before trying and if twrp asks for a password you could try default_password
Made any backups?
If the encryption key is lost you should just reformat the partitions to make the storage available again.
Maybe you can still recover the key to unlock the data if you didn't wipe it.

Bootloader is not unlocked yet.
I updated ota. Last night got it in notification, 1.4gb update.
I did backup all data.
In Android 10 I was able to access data folder. Now data & obb folders shows empty.
Can I still unlock bootloader?
Initially I dirtyflashed what caused a show phone.
Afterwards I did a clean install and it was done, but I went back to Bliss what ist the best right now
Hello.
I've had the Galaxy S5 for a while now (5 years), and while it is not my main device at this stage, I still keep it around as a backup phone.
On Pie-based ROMs and earlier, the heart-rate monitor worked just fine, on Samsung Health it just required to download a little apk and it would function with no issues, and 3rd-party apps like Cardiograph would be able to use it with no issues.
However, it seems that in Android 10 and 11, the HRM can't be accessed at all. It is detected, Samsung Health shows the option, but the sensor just doesn't do anything. And in 3rd-party apps, it isn't even an option I can use. I only can use the flashlight and camera combo, which I really don't want to use.
Does anyone know why it doesn't work? Is it something to do with how 10 and up work? And can something be done about? Or will I have to remain on Pie?
