Is the OnePlus 8 Pro worth getting in 2021? - OnePlus 8 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi everyone,
I've recently was given £500 Amazon giftcard and I was thinking if I should upgrade from my OP6T or not. I've been looking on what I should get like a treat for myself and for phones it seems like the 8 pro is a good deal. I could literally get a OP8 Pro (used like new with original packaging) from Amazon warehouse. I'm not sure how's the custom ROM situation for the 8 Pro, but I do know that the OP9 Pro is riddled with heating and battery life issues (def not worth the price). I could literally get the 8 pro for free with a case + tpu screen protector and some cash left. Basically a free OP8 Pro?!
I've been planning to buy it since Tuesday, but held off as I just couldn't justify the purchase. I could just buy it and return it, but I just don't need it and will probs return it anyways. My OP6T is solid, replaced the battery last year, getting at least 4hrs 20mins of SoT and running CrDroid ROM which still supports my old OP3?! I got October SP as well on A11. The 8 pro is supported as well! Is this upgrade worth it and needed?
From current leaks the OP10 Pro seems to be another boring punch hole device as OEMs aren't ready to release flagships with UDC and even the UDC tech won't be as good as of next year if it even came out next year. A device with UDC that's usable will probs be out like 2023 or 2024 which I'm not waiting that long for. Itching for new tech I guess and support will probs be dropped for my OP6T by then.
The OP8 Pro is a good device with some weird display issues reported by users online. Black crush, display getting green, UIelements staying on the display. Probs not as bad as the OP9 Pro especially when I'm getting it for free lol. I'm just stuck and any help will be great.

Depend on how much you will buy it.
My unit manufactured since mid 2020.
It has Blackcrush , Banding , minimal green tint.
But those screen issues are not major for me.
Let's wait the initial review of Snapdragon next Flagship SoC 898
expect debut with Xiaomi 12 later this year.
Those might give you an idea how OP10 Pro SoC will perform.
I think 9 RT improve heat management in hardware for 888 not sure,
If OP10Pro will improve that further more.

I already said how much it is. "I could literally get the 8 pro for free with a case + tpu screen protector and some cash left. Basically a free OP8 Pro?!" Tbh I don't really care about SoCs tbh they are just like cameras for phones, you'll expect to get a new + improved one when a brand new phone comes out each year. The SD 845 is fine for me. It's just the missing features my 6T doesn't have and maybe battery life. How's the battery life for the OP8 Pro now? Are u still on OOS or are u running a custom ROM? @ps000000

I often switch ROMs, as flashaholic person test for few hours.
But mostly back to stock because my workplace app only run well on stock.
Battery life look okay after 1.5 years.
Just my 1 person experience, you may consider read another site like oneplus forum on reddit , local oneplus facebook group etc.
(English is not my 1st language I might not good explain or good reading well.)

Great phone
Superb development here on XDA
Great community too which always helps
Price should be competitive now too
Performance is spot on, it'll run Wii games to give you an idea of the strength of the 865
Battery is great
Camera has served me well, plus if you want the infrared see through things camera, the 8 pro is the only place you'll get it (and still can on OOS)
That being said.. If it were me I'd see what the new Pixel has to offer (Tizen chip) it's their first phone with this chip, will it be any good? Is it Google's answer to apples M1?
I'd wait and see, if it is then get that, if not then OnePlus 10 Pro (if it will even be called that)

zenfone 2 vs oneplus one :D

Lets compare zenfone 2 with one plus one ...
Does zenfone2 oustands oneplus one? ( the 2014 flagship killer)
Or still lags behind the oneplus one which the older 32 bit hardware.
They're both as powerful but ZenFone 2 as ZenUI. And this make the difference for me.
However, if I had to judge the company, OnePlus will be far away ahead of Asus.
Because, let's face it, OnePlus has built an awesome phone wich is still a year later a flagship killer, whereas Asus, for the same price, build a phone that has the same specs and an Intel processor... They failed, and I don't think they will sell as many Zenfone 2 ZE551ML as Oneplus sold OnePlus One
well to each his own haha.. personally i prefer the intel chip for its better web performance.. not to mention the zf2 is cheaper than the OPO
the thing im missing here is the lack of CM and custom roms.. but hopefully its just a matter of time

Well asus is a trusted brand and oneplus is new
Asus has a good support here in india just like samsung...
Oneplus has the poorest service in india
I sold my OPO... Very happy with Zf2!

Intel is good and fast and as relaible as qualcomm
The missing thing is core managent .. As all cores are always online .. .
And yess custom roms should not be much away. .
But the doubt arises when we look at the previous models like zf5 or zf6 which do not have a xda forum as well...
I hope there is developmnt ... Bcoz i cant live with zenui all the time ...
I lovee tweaking the romz

Intel is fine but has a x86 architecture which makes it harder to have custom ROMS. And ZF5 and 6 were not as powerful as the ZenFone 2

Yes of course but first, I really love the Never Settle mind from OnePlus whereas Asus is just a company like others...
And then in France, ZenFone 2 was announced on March 31th, and it was immediately available for sale. However, shipments really started on April 20th and only in Silver and Red. Black and Gold ZF2 have been delayed.
So I bought on April 12th a black ZenFone 2 on the Asus eShop
1) It was written at this time "shipped before May 6th"
2) Asus Shop didn't give me any information. All I got was coming from French Asus CM on Twitter, and very often, his informations were wrong and incomplete
3) Finally, after more than 1 month waiting, on May 18th, they send me an email telling me that they were unable to send me the black ZE551ML and that they will give my money back. The solution they gave me was to buy a new one in Silver and they gave me an indemnification which was a View FlipCover Deluxe that I already have.
4)I asked them for an another indemnification and they told me Sorry not possible. But they could have known it because I ordred the cover at their store.
5) Finally, I ordered the new one on May 20th, on May 21st I received an email to tell me that the Black so the first one was shipped. So what do I do ? Should I cancel my order ? Then I will loose the poor indemnification...
6)For each email that I send them, it need 1-2 working days to get an answer, and their phone number is charged !
So, with all that stuff, I think that I can say that Asus and particularly their eShop is just incompetent, and I think that if I ordered a OnePlus One I would have already received it.
Moreover, my previous phone was a Nexus 5 and Google support was great.

Bro u dont know how bad the service of oneplus one is in india ...
A minor defect needs 3 months at service centre ...
And a broken screen costs more than 70% of amount of oneplus one ..
So i think going with asus is a better option for people in india
And soon i think devs will start developing roms for zf2 and it could do wonders ..
More over samsung in one of its tablets to be released in futured has used a high end. Intel chipset...

Indeed I hope that we will receive developpers attention, maybe CM !!! :fingers-crossed:
I would like to add that when the OPO was launched, it was nearly impossible to get one. Just few people managed to get invitations and buy one. And it makes only one month since we can buy it without an invitation.
The Zenfone 2 had some problems to be launched because of the big demand, but all people who pre-ordered it before 10 april (day of the official launch) received it one month after their order. But It was a way easier to get than the OPO.
Moreover i'd like to point out that according to rumors about the OnePlus 2, the Asus Zenfone 2 is quite the same product, because (again according to rumors) the OP2 is the same as the OPO except the processor.
In my opinion, the Zenfone 2 is a way better product than the OnePlus One.
I came from OnePlus... and I don't regret my decision...

OnePlus was great with marketing and built a powerful phone, but that's it. It took forever for it to actually be available.
Zenfone 2 will smoke OnePlus One in sales. It won't even be close as Asus is available retail internationally and actually have the clout, presence nd wherewithal to supply the demand.
As to custom ROMs etc... These will come. Zenfone 2 is barely out the gate.

ASUS announced at the 5/19 that sales were at 10MM. OPO sold about a million as of a few months ago.
I had touchscreen problem with OPO since the day I got the phone and their customer service is beyond horrible so IMO Zf2 is already miles ahead of OnePlus.
I've had both since before either launch... And I can say that honestly it's a matter of preference.
They both perform really well, and they're both great phones.
There's no way to say that one flat-out beats the other. Specs are great and all, but the user experience is different, but can be changed based on which ROM/launcher is used.

As long as you get an OPO without lemon touchscreen, the experience is largely comparable.
Battery life and performance are extremely similar.
OPO Pros:
- capacitive keys light up
- better power button placement
- much better developer support
- better display
- louder speakers
- better brightness range
Zf2 pros:
- DSDA
- cheaper
- Quick charging
- Better accessories
- expandable storage
- extra gig of RAM
- better digitizer
The camera quality is a wash. They're quite similar and OPO technically has the better quality sensor but the overall camera software and experience is probably Zf2.
Performance and hardware... Again, largely a wash. The Zf2 technically has the slightly better and faster hardware and more RAM but in practice I imagine the greater ARM optimization due to familiarity levels things.
The quality of the display is better in the OPO and the brightness range is greater but the digitizer tech on that phone completely blows. Very outdated, one crack renders the whole panel useless.
The OPO dual speaker (but still mono) setup gets appreciably louder than Zf2 but since both speakers face the same direction, a holding hand can muffle the sound somewhat more easily than Zf2 back facing speaker.
The capacitive buttons on OPO light up, which is very useful. And the developer support is the best available on Android outside of Nexus devices.
I'm not sure why but the Zf2 is more comfortable to hold in hand than the OPO. I can easily use both one handed but for some reason the slightly shorter (yet slightly thicker and wider) Zf2 is more comfortable than OPO in hand.
OPO feels slightly more premium to me (faux aluminum band I s'pose). Both lack barometers and wireless charging. Zf2 charges a helluva lot faster.
In practice, I've found the Zf2 a better daily driver simply because it's more reliable from a hardware standpoint (I had so many problems with touch recognition on my OPO and typing was a pain) and its thermal performance is much, much, much better. OPO would heat up and throttle often. Zf2 performs in the summer temp and sun much better, throttling far less.
Unless the software experience of open device like OPO is must have, I would definitely recommend Zf2 over it ten times out of ten.
I have both devices.
Zenfone 2 is nice. Love the screen. 4GB of RAM is alright with me!
64GB of storage is plenty for my needs and the price is right at $299 USD.
So far as far as performance they both seem to be about neck and neck.
Camera in my humble "opinion" seems better on the Zenfone 2.
Custom ROMs/bleeding edge ROMs on the OPO is nice and seems to have a nice amount of development.
ZenUI is just OK to me. Google Now launcher went on my Zenfone 2 right away.
Either phone is a great deal for their respective prices.
Win + Win = Win
Customer service from OnePlus has proven a challenge in the past but seems to be getting better daily.
I really don't think either phone is any better than the other. It really is just a matter of taste. For $50 more for the OPO I wouldn't feel hurt spending that over the Zenfone 2 it is still a great phone and has been my daily driver since last July.
I'm still "test driving" the Zenfone 2 and I am impressed with it so far. Only trivial complaint I have is the Asus software/bloat included. It isn't offensive since the phone is easily rooted and Titanium Backup freezes stuff just fine!
Edit:
Don't believe the hype about 5.5" screen on a 5" frame.... This 5.5" phone is actually a little bit bigger than the OnePlus One although you wouldn't notice it unless holding them side by side
OnePlus One battery life totally wins hands down.. No matter what ROM I use, stock, custom etc. Battery life is fairly weak on the Zenfone 2 considering the size of the battery. Thank god for speedy charging

The Zf2 has NFC but lacks wireless charging?

How is it in the long term usage?

I want to buy le pro 3. But it is interesting for me
1) will it be affective after one year usage? I mean about hardware and body how is it quality? Can it be withstand one year usage?
2) Software? What are you thinking will it upgraded to android 7?

1. Any phone will last up to 10 years (minimum) if you take good care of it. My LG Optimus T is still up and running just so you know. =D
2. Nougat is in the pipeline (maybe early next year). Somebody is already testing 7.1.1 AOSP and CM13 and maybe 14 should be available early next year.
No worries. This is a PRO phone from LeEco and not some kind of Samsung explosive.
After 6 weeks of usage, I am still really impressed, quality of the product seems same as any popular brand such LG,HTC,Samsung...
Should last.
I love my Superphone more than i loved Samsung's S3 and Apple's 5c. I won't to overpriece next time. Pro 3 6/64 give me as high as i except for phone. Updates will come, but it's not neccessary for daily usage. I wish only Polish locale. I won't to root my '3'. It's amazing, pretty, fast and stable phone with large battery and hudge screen.

The problem with your first point is that currently the best lithium ion batteries have an expected life of ~500 cycles, so you'll probably see diminishing battery life within 2 years. I doubt, at that point, it will be worth your time/money to replace the battery. This is the problem with all non-removable battery phones.
The real question is, who cares... We have a warranty through LeEco for 1 year. I used my citi mastercard, which apparently extends it 2 more years(so i'm almost hoping it craps out somewhere between 13-34 months, as I assume it'll just get totaled).
I've had mine for about 3 weeks, and it is certainly more powerful then my nexus 6. The screen size is nice, it's plenty bright for Colorado sunshine. The stereo speakers are actually really good, despite the odd placement.
The only problem I have is the Camera is lacking, and gets significantly worse as ambient light gets lower. It's never even in the same ballpark as my girlfriend's iphone 7.
The battery life is as advertised, excellent, even on the very early(un-optimized) cm13 rom. It seems to make it through a whole Sunday of obsessively checking my nfl fantasy app. My nexus 6 certainly didnt. My friends various samsung and iphones certainly don't either.
It's also noticeable faster then my nexus 6, although the nexus had a 2k screen(although this is just not worth it on a tiny screen)
I tried a lg v10, which I sent back. This phone was junk, and all of $50 cheaper used then the pro 3 new! The snapdragon 810 is actually worse then the 805.
For a modder/hobbiest/person who uses xda dev, its hard not to say the pro 3 is the best value in mobile phones(unless the camera is a huge deal for you). There is already a experienced developer working on a 7.1 rom(http://forum.xda-developers.com/le-pro3/how-to/7-1-progress-t3511474)
As a person who is consistently in various states of buyers remorse, I have, so far had none.

Worth Picking Up OnePlus 5 Now a Days or Should I Be Looking at Something Newer

Title says it all. I'm looking to pick up a new phone as my current HTC M9 is finally showing its age.
This is what I'm looking for in a phone:
I am BIG on de-bloating and ad blocking so at minimum root is REQUIRED.
Not required but might as well be, 3.5mm jack
6" screen or smaller, would prefer to stay below 5.6"
must support US AT&T bands
some what new specs
would like to have a LED display
not a requirement but defiantly looked at is battery life/size
I use to be VERY big into installing custom ROMS and Kernels. I've slowly backed off a bit but still love to do it from time to time. My HTC is just running a de-bloated version of the stock developer ROM. My Shield Table on the other hand is running lineage OS as the stock ROM is garbage. Having custom ROM options for this reason makes me feel secure in my purchase which is another reason I'm looking at a OnePlus in general.
From the digging I've done there really isn't much that meets my requirements. The OnePlus 5 seems to be my best option that I can find. The one plus 6 goes outside of my size limits. From the reading I've done it seems like the spec upgrades to the 6 vs the 5 just aren't worth the size changes.
I've also looked at the Asus ZenFone 4 Pro and ZTE nubia Red Magic Mars. The Asus modding community is basically dead other wise it seems to be a great fit. As for the ZTE it just barley meets my size limitations and is a bit of a gamble being that I have no experience with this manufacture before. Other then that my only gripe with the device itself is the LCD display but I currently have a LCD on my HTC so its not to big a deal.
So would you recommend that I pickup a OnePlus 5 or should I be looking at something newer due to the 5 approaching 2 years old now?
If this changes anything I would be picking up the phone from Amazon due to OnePlus only selling their most recent device on their website. I.E. - No warranty / international version https://www.amazon.com/OnePlus-A500...0955011&rnid=2470954011&rps=1&s=mobile&sr=1-2
I would suggest looking for a Oneplus 6 that has proper camera implementation and other little issues resolved. Or a Google Pixel 2XL if you want something that will last you longer in terms of updates ( eBay is having many auctions lately). In general, I would not recommend buying a Oneplus 5.

Existing thread for such discussions is this https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1620179
Here is my opinion about your question.
I recently purchased a op5 about 10 days back. I could have picked up the 6T but until the onscreen fingerprint is a few generation old I dont want to go that way. 6 was out of question due to the notch. 5t has a great screen and my friend is using it but I NEED my fingerprint on the front.(It is my use case could be different for u)
+ the metal body and 3.5 mm jack.
Also, the camera is good enough for daytime shots and the 835 with 6GB is very zippy and I am sure it will remain so for a couple of years. And it does have a great dev scene so later when my device is a year or so old i can just unlock the bootloader and go custom. I love custom rom and used to do that the 1st thing once i got my phone but nowadays i just dont have the time.
Overall i love the phone and feels very premium. I cant give my feedback about the other models u have listed above but personally for me OP5 checks all the boxes.
Go for 5 since it meets almost all on your checklist and besides, there's not much difference from the OP5 to 6/6T in terms of performance. Been using my OP5(6/64(Latest Beta)) for more than a year now but I hadn't have any hiccups or slow performance issues in all the applications. Plus, up till now; The Rom / Kernel development for OP5 is still alive and kicking.
Only issue that I had with my OP5 is the "Device temperature too low" which is already a hardware issue(Motherboard) as per the local tech and honestly speaking, I believe it was my fault as well. Maximing the usage of my OP5 and kept on using it even if it's charging then while I'm sleeping, accidentally covered the phone with my pillow(while AFK on Ragnarok Mobile) thus causing the phone to heat up to the maximum temp(Too hot to even hold the phone with it's case on). As of writing, I'm still waiting for my phone to be fixed by the tech.
Thanks everyone for the input!!
With the research I did today I ended up going with the Galaxy S9 (EXYNOS). Covers all my bullets, its a newer device then the OnePlus 5 with very close to the latest specs and was able to find the 128GB for $560. With it being the EXYNOS processor I should have no issues rooting and debloating it. And if I cant stand the stock rom it looks like they have good lineage OS development for it so I can just jump to that.
I just bought me a Oneplus 5 to replace my old Nexus 6. I bought the 8/128 variant in great shape for $260. I had the seller leave the bootloader unlocked for me so that I can easily root and flash ROMs when I'm ready. I haven't read into how any of that works on the OP5 or what I would need to do. I'd presume that I'd probably just boot into TWRP and flash magisk but I haven't checked any of that out.
So far, I absolutely love the phone. I knew my Nexus 6 was getting slow and was going to literally blow up at some inopportune time but I guess that I didn't realize how awful it was til buying the OP5. I haven't tried anything too taxing on it yet but this has been so smooth that it's hard to imagine anything else.
OP5 still a beast and will run all playstore apps for years to come. (6/8gb ram is insane for 99% of users)
-Also, less pixel (16:9 1080p) makes it faster and gives better battery performance.
-I love the out-of-display buttons, imo is the android signature.
- sound chip is awesome, big sell point for me on my ath-m50s.
I choose this phone especially to reduce my overcompensation (no, money isn't the problem). micro-technology is just killing the planet, so not changing my phone every year (hello apple fan boi) was a huge sell point for me.
Actually ram killed my previous phone, even with swap partition it was too slow ( HTC Desire Z from 2010). So I decided to get the best phone ram wise, xda support wise and chipset wise.
The only issue I have, is Oneplus refuse to sell batteries, this is just stupid, I mean yeah I get they want you to change phone model, or send them back your op for repairs, but still, how many people want to change the battery??? not much! so I dont get why they are so picky on that !
wife's OP3 still a very fast phone even in 2019, snapdragon 820, 6gb ram, but battery doesnt hold the charge. ebay batteries are ****, tired once, and got 1900 mha, phone shutdown @ 20% charge.
I love the op5, and if I dont loose/break it, I should be good for an other 4 years I believe ! :good:
I came from a Pixel XL, the OP5 looked great because of 8GB of RAM (which seems impressive for a phone), a better SoC, and a slightly lower resolution (better 3D performance). Along with all those things being true in-person, the speaker is also a bit better. It also has good LineageOS support.
My main reason for switching was for ease-of changing the battery if I needed to; the Pixel XL needed some adhesive heating and careful lifting of the screen; I wanted no part of that. The OP5 just pries open on clips which I find very nice, and the battery access is from the back.
I got a slightly damaged one (minor drop damage; insides and screen looks ok) for $200; the 8GB/128GB model.

OnePlus 6T Or Xiaomi Mi 9 6GB/128GB

Recently my current phone (Leeco LeTv Max 2) died on me, therefore, I am currently looking looking for a new phone, and after searching online for a good Android phone, I found that brand name phones like Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus, Google Pixel 3, and Huawei P30 Pro are expensive and the only phones that meet my budget are OnePlus 6T and Xiaomi Mi 9, the problem with OnePlus 6T that its camera is not that good as Xiaomi Mi 9, but when I search for the best Android phones online I found that OnePlus 6T is one of at leas the best 5 phones while Xiaomi Mi 9 is not even there, maybe it is new and it is not reviewed for most of rating website, so would you please recommend one for me in you know these phone, I have to buy one ASAP, thanks in advance.
Personally I'd say go for Mi 9 just an all round better device or even wait for OP7 at this point OP6T is not worth it.
Mi 9 Has SD855 More Efficient, Better Display (HDR10 Certification), Camera Sensors/Software, Better Speaker, 20w Wireless Charging, 27w Fast Charging.
But if you have a chance try both devices and see which suits you the most.

As far as specs go, I'd say the Xiaomi MI 9 is better. Does it matter buying new or used? You can get barely used 6T for 300-400 now. 7T will be out in a few months. I think the MI 9 is $600 or so. I was in the same position didn't want to spend a lot. So I picked up a 6T and a MI 8. MI 8 should arrive tomorrow. I'm going to compare the two for a daily. I have a brand new P20 PRO which I think is better than both that I need to get rid of. If you need now right now and cant wait then MI 9. If you can wait I say 7T. Or find a cheaper used 6T or MI 8 and wait for the 7T to compare to the MI 9.
I was thinking either to go to MI 9 (which I like a lot) or wait for the 7T, then I decided to wait, but now the 7T is released and the price is high, then suddenly while I was searching for a deal in our local online shopping site, I found a new Google Pixel 3 XL with only 700 CAD, which I found I deal that couldn't be rejected, so I bought it and so far I am happy, but my heart is still with the MI 9 which I think if will buy another phone in the future it would be it.
Get the Mi 9, it has better camera, better SOC, better GPS, faster charging, wireless charging, etc. The only cons are MIUI (depends on your taste), smaller battery, and slightly slower FP.
I'm starting to regret my OP 6T purchase, i got this phone 2 months ago. Now I can get a Mi 9 for $150 cheaper.
Op7
Does the Mi work in Verizon? Not sure where you are located....I really need to get away from them, VZW sucks.
I'm pretty impressed with the Mi phone and specs.
If xiaomi mi9, only 12 GB version (that might worth because of later-coming custom roms), 6 Gb will be a pain to use in some years. I had a xiaomi phone and I loved it because of the good hardware and the great developers of xda who made amazing roms and tweaks for my device, but it was not even a week old when I rooted and changed miui to stock android. When it comes to xiaomi, os is the weakest point, so even with the newer hardware mi9 performs on the same level as oneplus 6t just because op has a great software. You see the difference of chipsets when you are rendering videos, but on daily usage and gaming they are on the same level.
Mi9 is good, but if you want to buy a phone for longer time, oneplus is more future-proof than xiaomi.
One more pro thing for oneplus compared to mi9: battery life. 6t has much better SOT than mi9 or even op7 pro (90hz, max brightness -> disappointing battery life).
Mi9 for the price, for the harware. Many users love Miui.
6T for hardware, second hand price is great, but most important os & soft updates.
7 pro. awesome phone. Good hardware & software. Expensive. And of course, better screen = uses more baterry.

1. 12 GB worth for future custom roms?
Why are you saying that? This is absolutely not true.
2. Did you ever compare development of a mi 8 vs a oneplus 6t?
Xiaomis mi and the main redmi series are one of the most developed devices on XDA.
They have a big dev community from India.
3. The battery of the 6t is clearly not much better than the mi9.
Maybe you can show some adequate test results for comparison to proof that.
They are equal when it comes to battery life.

Who knows what future android versions will need? Apps and android are growing, they want more space, more ram, and so on, and I am not thinking in one-two year term, rather 4-5 and be honest: noone want their great flagship to be a laggy piece of crap 3-4 years later. Most people buy flagships because they are designed to be future-proof. 12 GB will guarantee fluid multitasking for years and you don't have to worry about anything. 6 GBs is only enough if you want to upgrade in 1-2 years and if you are paying monthly for the device yes this is an option, but I am not one of those. I just said if I woulf buy a mi9, which version would I choose (and if we see that even this is cheaper than OP, than yes this is an option). Why didn't I choose that? Software and battery.
I said also that I had a xiaomi phone and I know that this brand (not only mi, also redmi series) has the most developed topics in xda (that is why I used my redmi for 3 years because the devs ported great roms and on the forums even noobs like me found actual support) and to be honest migrating to oneplus forums full of crying was a huge disappointment after that. But facts are facts, Mi9 has a smaller battery with not-so-well optimized ROM (3300 mAh is not more, not less and MIUI is a heavy os), result: it will not last as long as the 6t and I am one of those who want their phone to last till the end of the day even with heavy usage.
I did not say one is better than the other, because everyone has their personal preferences what decides which one fits better for someone. They are on the same level when it comes to performance, I mentioned the differences pro and contra both, so I don't understand why are you complaining. Facts are facts: OP has a bigger battery, a better software, and this software keeps it future-proof in my eyes. Mi9 has newer hardware, wireless charging and a good developer community. It depends on people what they choose.
I tell you what was my problem with xiaomi and why I won't buy that brand again: stock software updates. When I see that even OP3 gets android Pie from the company, and xiaomi cannot upgrade even their last year midrange phones' android version (even if the hardware would be fully capable), that is disappointing.
I am talking about this: https://www.theandroidsoul.com/xiaomi-android-9-pie-update/
And this: https://www.xda-developers.com/xiaomi-redmi-6-6a-s2-y2-android-pie-cancelled/
Mi series are on different level, but scroll down to redmi series. Most of "not eligible" phones have the capable hardware if not all of them. Mine is not even on the list, it was released with MM and cancelled at MM (!!).
Two years later Mi9 owners will know that, but maybe that is why they are so well supported on XDA. I came to custom roms because of xiaomi, and I started to love these forums because of xiaomi.
But I want what normal people want: when I buy a phone, I want real software support from the company, and I want every single component of the software working in my country. Miui cannot give me that (although I had global version), most of the features were useless bloatware in my area. Different people in different countries will have different experiences. I just told you mine. Maybe I want too much. Sorry for that.

I asked you for a solid proof (but please no useless youtube noob video or something) that 6T's battery is lasting much longer. If you tell me something about battery sizes, then I can clearly say, that you don't understand how a phone is working.
Even when it comes to the RAM thing, with more is better, etc. Your phone won't get more 'laggy' just because you have 4 or 6 GB RAM nowadays. This won't change in 3-4 years either, if you have 6 or 12 GB RAM. You can have 12 GB RAM today and your phone will not be able to hold all apps in the RAM, if the RAM management and the application is not optimized.
I did not say anything against the longtime support by the company, but if he is willing to use custom ROMs (at least he is already here on XDA) the support with newest android updates won't be much different, especially when it comes to flagship devices.
Finally I did not argue against your recommendation. That is your personal thing.
I had a problem with your arguments.

Ok, so I turn the question: can you give me a solid proof that I am wrong and the solid numbers are lying? I used miui, I know that the standby tim is great but what about actually using the phone? That one just melts away.
About the ram thing: check the ram usage on your device. On mine it is averagely more than 4 gbs, if there is less than one gb free ram on a 6 gbs phone it becomes laggy because it deaperately wants to free some space while you just want to use your phone. Also that is my 10 years experience in Android phones.
About the support difference: I just told you above, read again.
Just happened to see this thread and realize it's a bit old now but anyways...
I have a OnePlus 6 currently, long story short several weeks ago the screen shattered and I needed a new phone. Thought about just fixing the 6 but decided to pick up the global mi 9 as spec wise and cost it was a great deal. Fast forward>>>> the mi 9 is currently on swappa and I'm waiting for my oneplus 6t, using a shattered 6. After waiting 360 hours to unlock the bootloader and get root so I could actually comfortably use the phone (not getting into a debate on privacy, I didn't care for all the intrusive crap on the mi 9) it was a let down but the final straw was really my fault for not really checking what lte bands TMobile was using around me, but besides that I, personally couldn't get adjusted to MIUI as it's anything but intuitive. The cameras were not really that great, the speed difference even between my 6 wasn't really noticable and I just wanted out. I thought about waiting for the Asus Zenfone 6 but I couldn't, not with the mi 9. I'll make due with the older 6t until I decide to upgrade again. From software, actual usage of the phone, weight, and tho it's still fairly new, lack of any development (I'm pretty sure that will change shortly) the mi 9 was not for me.
I would take op7 even it has worse camera. I cant work with miui
The "budget model" OP7 will be released soon.
In my opinion a perfect choice since OP7 iron out the few flaws of OP6t: better camera, stereo speakers and also benefit from OP7Pro: fastest CPU, 3.1 storage, better fingerprint sensor, etc.
Well, you don't get the fancy resolution in OP7pro, but you will get a much better battery life, and even greater battery SOT than OP6t (due to 855 use less energy than 845) and the price is 25% less the pro version.
In my opinion the optimal choice.

Is it worth to buy a ASUS ZenFone Max Pro (M1) in 2019?

Main question in topic title… (new or used devices)
How to unlock the bootloader? What's the best maintained and stable ROM out there?
Or should I avoid it?
The device is now currently selling for ₹9000 (presuming you are in India). If you spend a little more the current gen Redmi and Realme devices offer much better specs.
If you still want this phone I would recommend ResRemix, DOT OS, Havoc OS or Pixel Experience.
Nope no never even not in your nightmare..if you want it to became more than worst nightmare
Depends on how much price you're getting, In some websites it goes under 7k with Bank offers and all that, It's a nice device for that price range. If you're going above 8.5k, then look aside, there are better devices in that segment of 10k or under. Hope that helps
Do not buy any Asus phone in 2019 because they do not have LTE band 41 (Sprint / Vodafone In) and even though the SD636 660 and 865 support LTE A, CA does not work. There are software glitches in M1, fewer on 340.
Yes, with discounts and offers it goes around 7k or so right? can anyone suggest better phone in this range? with 5kmah batt full hd screen 3/4gb ram, sd 636 or better
If you NEED big battery AND you live in a well signal area = yes, otherwise, the phone simply sucks.
If you choose this phone, use Havoc, Dot OS for M1 is slow af, and buggy (Titanium backup doesn't work after a while, lots of gcam also force stop), also not so good battery life, just tried it yesterday. Oh, and it's a clean flash, not dirty.

If you are not particular about custom rom and development, skip this phone. Otherwise it is a good buy.

you're SERIOUSLY recommending a phone thats almost DOUBLE the price?
are your eyes and brain working normally?
hey OP, ignore everything in this thread, go for a gold plated iPhone with diamond touchscreen.
because screw budgets, right?
I would say it depends upon your needs.
I am a person who prefers small to medium sized phones, but wanted a slightly bigger device for reading and media consumption that could still be operated via single hand. Max Pro M1 fit the bill pretty well.
Its got a nice screen, reasonable specs, lightweight stock UI, nice build quality and is affordable.
I found is the camera to be lacklustre, which can somewhat be improved via Google Camera app.
YMMV.
I got 4gb max pro m1 for 7.6k
And running miui10 benchmark 124000
Is it good buy or what?

For 7.6k its definitely good buy, redmi note 6 pro with same SoC is 11-12k.
I bought the 3/32GB variant for Rs 6,066 after all the Bank Discounts and an exchange. So far, it's proving to be a good purchase. I'm really impressed with the battery life on it. The UI is smooth being stock Android. I've added a 64GB Micro SD card. It works than my brother's Redmi Note 5 Pro. The Front Camera is where it lacks but apart from that it's great.
Bought this phone in February this year for my mother, the price itself in Indonesia is quite a good deal if we consider its mid-class spec.
But... turns out it is a big disappointment. My mom only uses this phone for about 2 months and after that, she doesn't want to use it anymore, even she beg me to have her old Redmi Note 4 back instead of continuing using it (too bad, I already sold her old RN4). She said, this phone is too minimalist, the camera is very bad, no convenient features and the stock UI is simply boring.
So, she handed it back to me and I bought her the Galaxy M20 for a replacement and she is very happy with it. Now, this phone becomes my test phone to play with several custom ROM from our talented dev here in XDA community. Currently, I am using Pixel Experience Plus Edition with Darkonah Kernel. Sometimes, I also use this phone for a hotspot device when I have to travel overseas (i just have to put the local 4G sim card in it), so I can connect my primary phone and laptop while I'm roaming in the city.
However, if you consider buying this phone in 2019, my advice is, just DON'T... Except, you can get it with a very cheap price and forget the stock ROM, it is just BAD.
Did you try flashing the MIUI10 ROM, which makes it exactly like a Xiaomi phone? I come from Mi Max 2, got this phone for 3 main reasons
1)5000mah battery
2)2 sim and sd card
3) multi colored led notification light
I am quite happy with it. However the new Mi9T/k20 pro has AMOLED screen which are quite nice for decent price. Smaller battery and no rgb notification though.

Iam planning to tell my friend to buy one from his trip to India. There is nothing even half good i can buy for that price ( around 80 Pound) here in the UK . Dear Indian friends do you have any other phones to suggest for that budget ?
@rkoforever90 Hi,
Only lack luster thing in this phone is- its camera performance. Ignore the trolls here, they might be just some teens, accustomed to Chinese vendors.
Slow battery charge is intentionaly done by Asus to keep its massive battery healthy.
Very few devices comes with sd636 in your budget.
I'll recommend moto one device if you want to compensate for camera and performance.
Skip realme, oppo, Mi etc. (You know why )
Htc u12+ and Nokias in budget but lacks battery power. Also upcoming month is festive month in India so may be some good device launch will follow.
Overall for an elderly I think its good device with good resolution and screen quality. With no lags. Stock rom is not as bad as this forum made it look like.
