Lord knows how long shipping will take... I've read all I can on this device, found questions without clear answers... (?)
I hear there's sound issues (volume loss etc) but no certain (verified) fixes
Is unclear which android's in it, it's not the pink I see with the original versions... (see pic)
What IS clear is I've got to 100% secure the device (need root for that) though might want to avoid dropping a ROM in it to keep the Camera (?)
Sorry to seem dumb I've not fooled with Android 4+ years, been on a BB Passport (it's just plain SECURE, no need to mess with) but that infernal VoLTE forces one to abandon a much nicer fone

Root is the opposite thing you need to have a secure device. It breaks the Android platform security model, violates the app sandbox, prevents Android Verified Boot from working, allows malware that gets installed to persist on your device even after a factory reset, and significantly increases the root attack surface. It's one of the worst things you can do if you want to have a secure device.
Also, if you need a secure device you should not be buying a 6+ year old phone that last received an OEM security patch in 2017 and will never get firmware security updates from its hardware vendors ever again.
If meh hath not ROOT meh not Owneth The Device

My dad and I both have AT&T S4s, and he is not tech savvy or anything. Basically uses his phone for the minimum. I take care of his phone tho, and when I knew the 4.3 update was available after trying it myself I updated his phone to MK2.
He's kept the same apps since he updated hasn't installed new ones yet ever since the update he gets this message randomly throughtiut the day.
It comes and it doesn't tell which app is causing the alert to trigger and when he clicks View Apps all it does it take you to the manage apps settings screen...
I have gone through the settings in his phone countless times, even gone as far as to cross reference the time of the alerts to App Ops to see if I could narrow it down... But what am I missing!!!?
I have never seen this before and I have been with android forever! Has anyone else noticed this since the 4.3 update. Or even before it? What do I do!!!

If anyone can advise a fix, that would be so appreciated. I am almost ready to try a full reset, but my dad doesn't want to lose his data so I'm trying to save that for my last resort..

Have you updated the Knox security? Mine said that and then updated the Knox security and took care of it.

i get that to.
Hey guys
How do you update Knox? I can't find an option in any of the settings screens and since there is no "app" to open that is Knox I don't know how to update it. He is still getting the message
Oddly enough it seems to be triggered every time he turns on his WiFi and connects to a network.
These auto update/pushed wifi updates are insane !!! (no descriptions at all, I read transcripts of users chatting with att and they don't know what the updates contain?!?!
WTH !!! They "push" an update to our phones while we sleep, and now many peeps are experiencing major problems -
Why do you guys blindly download stuff without knowing the consequences, are you just a bunch of Lemmings?
(one of many from the "update" thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2661285 )

No matter what I do I can't get this thing to install past 31%. I've tried defrosting EVERYTHING, disabling SuperSU and enabling Survival Mode yet nothing works. I tried deactivating all Xposed modules as well and wiping the cache, yet that didn't help. I'm starting to think that once I get this sorted out it'll be my last Samsung phone for a VERY LONG time.

Seriously, I have been with Apple for years, and their "updates" contain a description of what is contained in the update.
Same thing with updates for apps, it tells you what the update is changing/adding.
Not with Android stuff, they treat us like guinie pigs with these "secretive" updates, and you guys just gobble them up without even knowing what the heck is going to get changed on YOUR device! How can you guys just blindly allow downloads to your device with knowing what is up before hand?
Yesterday I looked down and I saw a Samsung update halfway done downloading!?! wth !!! I pulled the back cover and yanked the battery in less then 2 seconds, and put an immediate stop to that silliness. (then turned Samsung apps auto-update off).
That thread is just filled with guys having problems, losing their root, spending a crap load of time trying to get their phones back to how they were BEFORE the update. Some guys can't re-root, some guys have done factory resets, to no avail.
So seriously, can we stop this blind downloading nonsense by shutting down ALL auto updates?
On the MacRumors website, the devs there would check out updates BEFORE the masses did. I always waited a couple days after the update came out, and I always knew EXACTLY what was going to happen with the update.
Here in the Android World, the masses act like a bunch of Lemmings, blindly jumping off a cliff - It needs to stop.
Play Store/Settings/notifications ON, Auto-update OFF
Samsung Apps/Settings/auto-update OFF, notifications ON

Hello everyone, this is my first post on xda forums. I hope someone out there might be able to help me out.
I accidentally found out that on my galaxy s4 I9500 lock screen, I can still press and hold power button and it gives me options to power off/restart my phone. I have pattern lock enabled. I tried and successfully powered off the phone straight from my lock screen, not to mention that it scared me out. What if it gets stolen? Anybody can turn if off and I wont be able to track it down or enable any thing via SMS commands etc.
What's the purpose of lock screen if the phone can be turned off, if not unlocked, and I couldn't do anything about it.
I recently updated android 4.4 and I am not sure whether or not this issue persisted before that. I am attaching a screenshot of it. Looking forward for someone to sort this out for me. Thanks.

Did you just find out after reading this post or were you aware of it before?
And have you not thought that even if it is as you describe what is the benefit
not so great
If someone steals your phone much easier to remove the battery and that is even faster than pressing buttons
this is just my personal opinion

Yes, you're absolutely right, but then again it raises a big question mark on all the tracking and anti-theft apps as well as Google's own android device manager feature a bunch of crappy apps which do no good at all except for playing sirens via laptop on your own phone and thinking it actually works.
Plus if the thief is within the room, he wont go through all the trouble of removing the protective case, back cover and then removing battery itself. He'd simply turn it off and wait.
It has been like this since I can remember, way before 4.4. In GS3 and GS4, probably in SGII too, this I don't remember.

Hi there
so I should not have asked this as a Q/A thread. I was hoping with the update they may have fixed the issue but no such joy. Hopefully someone has a work around or a fix:
I have been looking for a replacement for my Moto X Pure (because I am idiot and lost it). I liked the specs and the price of the Axon7 (having an support for an external SSD won me over vrs One Plus). Anyways I should have checked here first as there is a serious limitation for my use case. I use my phone for my work. Due to the way the work policies were setup we have to enable the password for Android start up. And as some of us have found out the hard ware that option is NOT supported with the current OS on the phone. From what I have read the phone is pre-encrypted so this option was removed.
My question (I know finally) was is there any way to get the start Android password working? I heard something about the un-locked boot loader but not sure if that is the ticket. I am not sure why the folks at ZTE removed that feature/option. Without getting this option re-enabled I have no choice but to send this phone back (take advantage of the 30 day money back guarantee) and look for something else... other than that I really like this phone! As always thank you XDA members!
Here is what I am seeing:

But when you try to touch to change the setting, it takes you to the area where you set/reset your screen lock password. And you get stuck in that loop.

From all I have seen, the startup password protection is not present on the ZTE rom. You can hit up the official forum mods for an answer, give them the app that is causing this so it can be verified. There are instances where people were prompted for password on startup after installing and wiping in TWRP. This is most likely the Android Device Manager suspicious behavior protection based on wording of the prompt
http://en.miui.com/thread-324522-1-1.html But i don't think this can be made a permanent prompt

thanks for the info. I ended up calling ZTE tech support on this issue. And after some digging they came back to me with "this is a know issue and we are working on it with no ETA yet" reply. So hopefully that will get some traction. The personal question is do I want to wait for them to fix it? Or should I return and get something else to support the cooperate work needs. But that is more of a personal question I have to answer... Thank you again!
Same problem here - I would buy this device but work requires the PIN (and no root) so currently not able to purchase. This and the lack of T-Mobile Wifi calling in current builds are the big blockers for me. I don't have trust to purchase until both are addressed. Hopefully that is soon as the new Google "Pixel" phones next week (despite the higher likely cost) are the alternative option to me right now.
This is far fetched, but some removed settings like screen on time are accessible through custom launcher activities like SOT. Maybe worth a shot?

Use ampere for play store for app usage.
Can anyone with a device confirm if that app provides access to the settings and this works?

are you saying you can an app maybe able to provide access to this "missing" or removed encryption password to start settings?
Just wondering if anyone else has had a malware hit on a system app named "com.google.android.apps.restore"? Bitdefender lists the app as a " Trojan.downloader.gDJAV" and I see that SDMaid pro shows strange install date and info (see attached).

I'm on a rooted International 6t with stock OS. Thanks ahead of time.
I usually dont trust any third party anti virus app on my phone. Android has built in anto virus and protection.
I think it is because it needs some permissions for restoring your data (migration tool). And anti viruses thinks that it could harm your system.
So calm down and ignore or send it to OnePlus Support.
Not too worried, just looked strange. Thanks and will do.

If you relay upon the in-built from Google ... then you are "naive". Have a look on this test https://www.av-comparatives.org/tests/android-test-2019-250-apps/
Many of those apps are crap, but that includes Google Protect (just 68%).
On the other hand is Bitdefender (scored 100%) one of the best AV you can run on Android. I trust Bitdefender on my desktop, and i trust them also on my mobile.
If I was you, I would trust the alarm from Bitdefender and uninstall the "com.google.android.apps.restore" asap.
Edit: And unstall also Google Protect as it give false signals also on safe apps, like e.g. Viper4Android)
It shows as "Android setup" in titanium backup. I think it comes up when you first boot your phone, language, account setup and all. Scan the app on other anti viruses. None of them are perfect so it can be a false positive.
I froze it and deleted the backup apk. Appreciate the input. Now let me go make a post about TWRP and encryption which really confuses me.

You do understand that an AV does nothing other then giving you an extra warning on Android. It doesn't have the same possibilities as Windows or Linux to scan processes or apps... Atleast not without root. https://www.extremetech.com/computi...rus-apps-are-useless-heres-what-to-do-instead
