Let me be the one to answer this. As I am the one who tried this a day back.
This method does not work.
Step 9. Install Recovery Ramdisk option. You will not see this under our TWRP model mentioned in the OP.

I have a Moto G4 Athene (not Plus, and not Play).
I did the following:
unlocked bootloader
flashed TeamWin recovery
installed SuperSu 2.79 SR3 from TeamWin install
The phone no longer boots. Just a black screen. Flashing notification light if put on USB.
I can still get into the bootloader, and from there into TeamWin recovery, but I'm not having any luck beyond that.
Sadly, I didn't create a backup.
I tried installing LineageOS 14.1, pushing with ADB in recovery, and then installing with TeamWin. Even though I can add the file to the phone and I can run the install, a reboot returns a black screen.
Any advice? I'm afraid this isn't looking too good.
By the way, you can just work with twrp after installing that... stock recovery (fastboot adb) doesn't belong anymore. At first I would suggest that you post the details which are shown in your bootloader.
Furthermore I would recommend just to flash stock rom and testing that case.

First of all, if you read their corresponding threads, you need to do the following when rooting:
- Unlock bootloader/flash TWRP (you did)
- Flash a custom kernel (Vegito or ElementalX)
- And then wipe ART/Dalvik Cache
Second, for LineageOS- you cannot dirty flash custom ROMs, EVER EVER EVER! By this I mean you have to wipe system/data/cache/dalvik etc.- you can ignore Internal Storage and the SDCard/OTG.
You may (should) have to flash the Moto G4 Nougat radio that's floating around XDA somewhere. LOS worked fine for me without doing that, but I know other ROMs require it.
Finally, as a quick heads up, all Moto G4 Plus ROMs work fine with the G4, including any stock ROMs/backups.
Edit: I heavily suggest Magisk or phh SU over SuperSU- Magisk allows you to use SnapChat and Pokemon Go, and phh's is open source.
Thanks for the responses.
I was able to restore the phone with a stock rom I found on these boards. After that, I received two OTA, one to 6.0.1 and then the current to 7.0.0.
I have the same problem than you... Can you send me the link that you use to fix it?

Just flash ElementalX 1.04 kernel (after flashing SuperSu or Superuser or Magisk) when trying to root STOCK Nougat 7.0 as it's designed to thwart any root attempt.

can you please give the step by step guide you followed to recover your phone!!!
On one of my Moto G5 Plus phones, I had rooted it prior, so couldn't install OTA updates, but I found some twrp flashable packages to get to NPNS25.137-93-14 on retus, and then I installed a twrp flashable oreo (both found here on XDA), but in the process, since it flashed new system partition and all, I lost root. Is there a working method to root on Oreo? Preferably without having to lose data since my bootloader is still unlocked and I have TWRP installed.
Can't you just flash Magisk?
Nothing about rooting deletes your data, unlocking the bootloader does that...

Just flash latest magisk.zip through TWRP as usual. If the Magisk Manager isn't installed after that download and install the latest one from Magisk thread.

I´ve recently updated my Moto G5 Plus to 8.1 and I´d like to root it to be able to install the NX Camera APK. I was wondering if is there a way to root the phone without deleting everything on it.

Rooting doesn't reset your phone. Just flash magisk through TWRP. If you mean the process of unlocking the bootloader which is the prerequisite for rooting: No way to unlock without losing you data from internal storage. Back it up before.

If I need to unlock the bootloader to be able to root and if unlocking the bootloader wipes everything out, then it´s the same as saying that rooting wipes everything out

You need to unlock the bootloader of your device in order to root your phone and unlocking bootloader erases all your data.
So keep a backup before proceeding.
Is there a guide or How-to for rooting the G7 river, with or WITHOUT) twrp? As twtp seems to be the issue with Android 10 and no twrp 'fix' or version to fix has been released tho it's said to be in the works for a year now...I'm tired of waiting.
Is there ANYONE that'll post up an unofficial How to root the G7 river with Magisk, WITHOUT twrp? There are plenty of BU options one I'm up n running. i.e. Titanium and others.
Any guide, how-to or a link to one would be awesome but it must be for the plain G7 (River). I'd certainly be wilingl to donate towards people's time spent. A Magisk root without twrp is just fine
Been trying to get a magisk root on this phone for over a year now thanx to this dynamic backup crap making everything a pain in the @$$. This is my last plea, next stop is LOS while I save up for a Pixel 4a.
Thanks for your time.
You can install magisk manager app and create a modified boot.img with magisk on it.
What you do is extract original boot.img from stock rom zip file, put it on your phone, mod it using magisk manager and flash the modded img after. Obivously you'll need the bootloader to be unlocked for this.
More info: https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/install.html#patching-images
I've got that much figured out...
Turns out that the guide I linked to in my last post is legit, heh, the author is on xda too.

Hey,
Sorry this sounds totally noob, but I was trying to gain root access for my moto g4 play. I have already unlocked the bootloader. Is it possible to install magisk without twrp. Most guides online follows through twrp.
On official Magisk installation guide, it says to patch recovery. How can I do so?
Sorry, this is dumb but haven’t rooted anything in last 5-6 years.
Also the SD card slot on this g4 play is broken, so that’s a big problem.
