New digitizer is not working - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
After 8 long years, I finally managed to drop my beloved Nexus 4 on the ground. Front glass was smashed, lhe LCD was still working fine but the digitizer was not.
I ordered a new screen (chassis/LCD/digitizer) on Aliexpress for $20, replaced the components into the new frame only to find out that the digitzer was still not working.
After a bit of googling, I made it work by following Morteza's advice over at ifixit.com but that's not a long term solution or even a medium one.
Basically, I had to :
plug the broken digitizer
power on the phone
hotswap the broken digitizer with the new one
touchscreen was finally working !
... until I rebooted the phone and then I had to repeat all the steps above
I know it's time to let it go, I don't really want to spend another $20 without assurance I will work, but I don't know, maybe someone has a solution.
Thanks

Changing a broken LCD screen on the universal

Hi!
I have been lurking around in this forum for quite some time, but I have been unable to find any information regarding how to disasamble the universal.
I have a broken screen, and I am thinking about buying a new lcd on ebay and try to replace the broken lcd.
I have tried to unscrew the six screws under the screen, but I am not able to open up and "get inside" to replace the lcd.
Are there any information aviable on how to do this, or even better an instruction on how to replace the lcd screen?
Thanks for any help and a great forum!
replacment screen
hi, i had the same issue where i accidently sat on my uni and cracked da screen. i ended up goin to a guy in slough who fixed ma screen for £120 (well £110 cos da screen has a really small scratch in the bottom corner on it - hardly visible)
It works perfectly and the screen looks new. im running all my normal apps on it, tomtom and i have no probs.
The guy advertises his screens on ebay and you can either send your uni to him or go to his house and get it done in front of you within 10 minutes. Definatly recommend this guy and he does all the XDA type screens and HP iPAQ's.
If anyone wants to contact this guy his number is 07919174796. He can sell you the screen on its own if you like.
HTC instructions
I have the pdf on how to dismantle and reassemble the HTC universal. Although I think it is in the FTP somewhere too.

itwasntme187: Thanks, I was about to buy from this guy, but found another one at ebay that was a little bit cheaper ($160 for a new LCD screen). I sent an order today, so I hope I have done the right thing trying to fix it my self.
wassa: Thanks for notifying me that there was a manual out there. I checked the ftp and found the manual on dismantle and reassemble the HTC universal.
Thanks for the help to both of you.
you can download it here. http://buzzdev.net/component/option...om_remository&Itemid=100&func=fileinfo&id=304
The replacement was a success.
I got the LCD from ebay on Monday and using the above mentioned manual I was able to replace my broken LCD screen. It is an easy job if you follow the instructions in the manual. There is only a total of 8 screws that has to be unscrewed to get the job done. Now if I was only able to get a replacement camera flash light my universal would be in an almost perfect condition.
glad you got everything working!
Hi, im a newbie here. I also broke the LCD screen on my Universal/Xda Exec.
How can I access the FTP site to download the instructions on how to replace the screen?
Many thanks for your help.
you can get a new screen + have it replaced for 40 quid. Basically HTC has an agreement with the carphone warehouse and offer a repair service with all parts included for 40 pounds (I'm using a bloody german keyboard so i can't type the pound sign). When i broke my screen (I was bump starting a car with it in my pocket) i thought damn, now i'm 100 odd quid out of pocket, so i was suspiciously surprised when it was only 40 pounds. The only drawback is it takes about 6 weeks. Maybei should have posted this last year when i had my screen replaced...
LCD Replacement instruction sought
Hi. Hope the person who provided the instruction is still around. I am another Universal user who needs to replace the screen as the digitizer has not been working properly.
Anybody could provide the instructions on how to replace the LCD screen please? As far as I know the Universal's LCD screen and digitizer are attached and could not be separated without (de)soldering. But providing that the digitizer itself costs much less than the whole LCD ($8 vs. $135), if anyone would please provide the instructions on how to replace the digitizer (on the same lcd screen), that would really be awesome!
Really I do not enjoy the idea of sending the unit away for 2 weeks with £100 expense.
Thank you very much in advance!
Since there are obviously people here who have done this before could someone maybe help me out?
My screen is intact, but I dropped my Universal a while ago and since then the 2-axis screen hinge seems a bit loose. Everything works ok, it's just that the cover with the screen in it are not as firmly attached to the base as they used to be.
Can this be fixed by taking the device apart and reassembling it (tightening some screws and so on) or would it be a waste of time?

hermes touchscreen dead... UH OH

I discovered my phone filled up with sprite during a house move for my sister , long story short over the course of 2 hours or maybe more my touchscreen slowly died and now does not work at all.
Ive taken it apart and all looks well, I've got my finger on the "order new screen/digitizer" button just want to know if anyone knew if that was a bad idea and wasn't going to fix it... any suggestions or notes? thanks guys
Buy new LCD (complete).. If you buy just the digitizer then you have to unglue the digitizer from the screen, Align and reglue the new one. If you stuff it up its a lot of time and effort wasted and you still have a dud phone...
The complete lcd WILL cost more (on ebay Oz digitizer is $20 and lcd is $100) but the hassels of putting in a new digitizer are ridiculous...
I actually just bought a "broken" Hermes of the same model and paid $120.. It still worked fine but I now have OTHER spare parts if something else dies...
Just a thought....
Cheers...
well http://www.blackberry8100parts.com/...Touch-Screen-Digitizer-With-Tools_p_3-73.html is what i was looking at, as far as i can tell thats the screen and the digitizer together and i dont have to mess around with putting the two together for 35$, or am i mistaken?
Looks right and is a good price too...

New Digitizer doesn't work??

I recieved my new digitizer today and i carefullt opened up the g1 and swapped out the old cracked screen for the new one and connected the ribbon. The dang thing still doesn't work. I tried re-imaging to RC30 and still no luck. I ordered this screen from Hong Kong.
Thanks for any help
they could have sent a defective one, thats gotta be frustrating.
how did you initially test to verify the digitizer was bad? I assume it wasnt just cracked because they usually still work. There is a very good possibility that it is not the digitizer, it could be software or other hardware causing the digitizer to not work. My money is on one of the flex cables.
I got the phone for free from a friend in PA and i lost 30 bucks on the screen so im not out too much. Hey guys thanks for your thoughts
Sounds like it was something other then the digitizer, maybe when that got cracked something else got f'd up. I hate ordering anything from honk kong, I always check the north america box on ebay. Even if it costs me an extra 10-20 I don't mind cuz out of the 8 times I have ordered from HK 5 items have been defective and only 1 of those sellers got back to me and replaced it. Plus your lucky to get someone who is fluent in any language besides there native.
These are notorious for the flex cable between the front and rear housing breaking. It is a terrible design. Try replacing the flex cable and I am sure you will find that it will work again.
Hey! Old thread but I just took apart my phone so I'm prepared when my new housing arrives. Anyways I put my phone back together and my digitizer that Im now typing on didnt work. So I took the phone apart, made sure I had the ribbon for the digitizer on. Put the phone back without the screws. I then turned the phone on. Digitizer worked. Put screws in. Digitizer stopped working. So I loosened the 2 top screws 1/4 turn and BAM.....Digitizer worked again.
Hope this helped.

My HD2 LCD screen broken -- Help!!

My LCD screeb broken yesterday. I have tmobile HTC HD2.But my touchscreen works fine.
Do I need to purchase this one
http://cgi.ebay.com/OEM-HTC-HD2-T858...#ht_2748wt_698
or
http://cgi.ebay.com/T-MOBILE-HTC-HD2...ht_1845wt_1014
Do I need to solder something or is just an easy fix?
Please let me know.
Thanks
Mine too
The links to the Ebay sale you posted are no longer valid.
My screen is broken also, just the touch sensitive glass (digitizer). The LCD is still in tact.
From what I understand the digitizer is harder to replace than the entire screen (digitizer+LCD) because the LCD is glued to the digitizer. There's a video on YouTube someone posted demoing the process.

Has the digitizer for only $57 USD, but you have to order 3 at at time. If we can find someone else that's interested, then maybe we can go in and get one if that's all that you need also.

I have done the digitizer repair, not exactly what I would call a fun time.
Easy to mess up your phone, need to make your own glue or double sided tape (to hold digitizer/lcd/frame together), about 4 little tiny wires that need to be placed correctly when putting the phone back together.
Thankfully the US HD2 does not require soldering the digitizer's connector to the lcd (the european one does), however again this is not a repair job for the feinthearted.
After all was said and done and the digitizer was repaired, the new one had the rainbow/oil effect when under a fluorescent light source, don't know if it is due to me using the wrong digitizer or what, but it did not look good. I had the same issue with a altell touch pro 1 that I purchased on ebay, it annoyed me then and it's back with a vengance.
Have fun, be very meticulous and watch the HD2 dissembler videos about 5 times before you unscrew one screw.

Digitizer or whole LCD? Experience?

I cracked the screen but just the digitizer as far as I can see.. Screen has worked and digiziter for about 6 months seems 100% only 3 little hairline cracks. Ive waited because replacement cost so high and its not that bad doesn't stop function. I was wandering If anyone here has just replaced digi becouse thats way cheaper. And if this unit is one piece or they are actually separate and easy to replace separately from each other.
Thanks.
The Digitizer and LCD are glued together with silicone, which yes, can be separated and reseated, but it will not look or operate at 100% if you try to do it separately by hand.
I've repaired many phones for friends - a part time job has me fixing ~10 iphones a day - and let me tell you, it's not worth the aggravation or time to try to seat a digitizer on an LCD perfectly. Machines do it for a reason.
I can get LCD+Digitizer assemblies for the 6P at my shop in Canada, which run about $250 CDN (185 USD) + shipping/tax. Whether that price is better online or not, I'm not sure.
