T-Mobile Pixel 4 Not Getting Certain Texts - Google Pixel 4 Questions & Answers

Has anyone else had this problem? I've got a stock Pixel 4 from T-Mobile that just doesn't get texts reliably. Doesn't seem to matter whether the sender is on an iPhone/Android. Sometimes they'll come in days late from when they were originally sent - sometimes not at all. I've tried all sorts of different texting apps besides the stock one. I've exchanged the phone at T-Mobile for a new one with a fresh SIM card - same issue. If I factory reset the phone, I'll get a flood of all the missed texts and it may work fine for like a week until the problem creeps up again. I've tried with chat features on and off. Nothing seems to fix this and I've had friends tell me they had similar issues and only solved it by switching to a different phone, but I don't have that luxury since I don't have Jump On-Demand. Stuck with this BS and super disappointed considering it's Google's own phone.

Prior to owning the Pixel, my wife and I had the exact same issues with our OnePlus 7's. Text messages were even going to the wrong contacts. We tried everything to remedy the problem via OnePlus. We even contacted T-mobile and they tried resetting our networks as well. Nothing worked. I finally got a hold of a representative at T-Mobile that said they were upgrading the network in our area and multiple customers were experiencing the same issue. So, we immediately switched to another messaging app and let our contacts know the issue and the new preferable way of contact. Now we own the Pixel, our SMS texts are fine and haven't experienced any issues, but it's more likely related to the network than the phone. But I'm still paranoid after that experience, so we hardly ever text anymore and rely on another messaging app with family and friends.

[HELP] Problems Receiving Text Messages on T-mobile's $30 Prepaid Service

Well as the title says, I've been having issues receiving texts messages on the $30 prepaid plan.
What happens:
-I will randomly not receive a text message, or I will receive it days later(if I turn my phone on after being off all night), or I will receive a message that is one half the current message and one half an old message from days/weeks ago(the are intertwined).
-It happens complete sporadically, no rhyme or reason. It happens at my apartment, while I'm sitting at work, or at the gym. At my lowest signal level I will have 2 bar remaining of "3g" but it's usually around 3 (I'm in Pittsburgh).
What I've tried so far to fix it:
-I had T-mobile swap out for a new sim card.
-I've contacted T-mobile customer service twice. They've "refreshed" my connection to their network, reset my sim, played with my account, etc.
-I'm using Chomp SMS as my messaging app. The issues also occurred when using the stock messaging app.
-I've cleared the cache for both apps.
What I haven't tried and what you may need to know:
-I haven't played with the APN settings all. As far as I know all of those settings are set straight from/by T-mobile.
-I'm not rooted
-I've had this problem intermittently since buying the nexus4 from google in Nov.
-My original nexus 4(which I RMA'ed) also had the problem- looking back I just thought it was the other persons phone. Which makes me believe it's on T-mobiles end, or at least a tweak in an APN setting?
-Zero issues with call clarity, data speeds. All have been perfectly fine.
-It doesn't seem to matter which carrier the person who is sending me the message is on.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Or has anyone else experienced similar issues? I'd like to hope that there's a simple fix that doesn't require me changing to ST and using AT&T but I guess if I have to... I have too. I'm at a complete loss as to what else I could try in order to fix this.
All help, tips, suggestions are welcome. Thank guys!

I have had this issue on and off with SMS messages and "Waiting Voice Mail" messages over the years (mostly on pre-smartphones and G1). All you can really do is reboot the phone often (at least once a day). I think it's related to messages sent while your phone has no service, but not 100% sure.
For 3 yrs with a half dozen smartphones I had texting issues with tmo and now on straight talk tmo it is the same thing.
It hasn't been as bad as you seem to have it but there do sometimes seem to be heavy delays.

MMS Issue with One Particular Contact

I'm on AT&T running AOSPA 6.0.3. I've had an MMS group chat with 3 co-workers (4 including myself) going for several months with no issue until a few days ago. I know this dude has a Samsung/Android phone of some sort and is on Verizon. I can receive images from him, but not text. I have tried changing/resetting my APN but it doesn't seem to do anything. The other 2 people in the group receive his and my messages with no issue. Again, it's just MMS text I can't receive from one particular contact. We can SMS each other no problem. I thought maybe there could be some tower issues and it'd fix itself in a day or so, but now it's been nearly a week. This is by far the weirdest issue I've ever encountered.
I have this same issue. Did you ever figure out a solution?
I can send/receive texts/MMS (group texts and pictures) from everyone okay besides my sister who has a Samsung galaxy s6 edge. We are both on AT&T. The messenger app says there is a text waiting to download but won't let me download it. Any ideas? Maybe an issue with the Samsung phones?
Try to send one MMS in Safe mode. Once it sends it, then reboot the cell. It should work. My wife has a Nexus 6 and this happen for no apparent reason and this fixed it. Hope it helps.
Sorry, life got busy and can't say I really ever figured it out. The safe mode thing sounds interesting. I finally flashed a Nougat ROM a few days ago and so far everything seems to be back to normal. Maybe my phone just needed a reset?

Weird Issue with Texts Getting Lost

Hey guys, I'm having this very strange issue with my text messages on my T-Mobile V20 (H918). When I'm texting people, they always receive my texts, and the text sends fine on my end. No problemo.
Now, when someone is texting me and we've been in a conversation for awhile, and suddenly they won't reply. And it's usually followed by "you there?" Or they just assume I'm ignoring them and quit replying altogether. This isn't an isolated issue, either. Happens with nearly everyone I text (but the issue seems to exclude T-Mobile or T-Mobile MVNO numbers). It doesn't matter if the person has an Android device, iOS device, Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, any of their MVNOs, nothing. Issue gets worse at indeterminate times of day. Really sucks when you're trying to text someone about signing a lease on an apartment... Using the stock messenger app that came with Nougat, but the phone hasn't had an OS update yet...but my remorse period runs out in 8 days, idk if I can wait for that.
Troubleshooting that's already been performed:
Clearing app cache
Performing a factory reset via settings
Performing a factory reset via LG recovery upon boot
Calling T-Mobile and having them re-provision my number a couple of times
This has happened before on my old G4, but seemed to be remedied with the V10 that I previously had.
NOTE: Upon checking T-Mobile's messaging history for my line and matching up the times in my inbox vs. their times for sending/receiving texts, the texts are indeed coming through on their end, but never reaching my device.
If anyone has any wisdom that they can share, it would be beyond appreciated. This is turning into a real headache. Thanks in advance.
Are you using Textra or another non stock messaging app?
A member and I @ghedoicy confirmed that with Tmobile, they use RCS (Rich Chat Service - only carrier to use it) and that is what is causing the issue
What is happening is if you're using a non stock messaging app to send texts which is fine. But when that person (who is a Tmobile customer) is using the stock messaging app to reply, it is going to YOUR stock messaging app. If you go and open your stock app, you will find all the "missing texts".
Ghedoicy got in contact with Textra and it's not a problem with the app but with how Tmobile handles texts/MMS (and only Android to Android too)
I experienced this as well texting with texting my brother who is on my account and has an S7. He uses the stock app and I use Textra. I text him but when he replies it goes to my stock app. When he downloaded and used Textra, I got the texts just fine in Textra. My wife and mom have iPhones and I get their texts just fine in Textra.
EDIT - read that you're saying it is excluding Tmobile customers and you're using stock app.
Try downloading something like Textra and see if that fixes it?

Thanks, I'll give that a try! I'll post back with results once I find out if that's helped.
Did a new app fix it for you? I'm having the same exact issue.

Textra did help (thanks, nest75068) but I'm still mad this phone doesn't work like it's supposed to. The stock messaging app includes Advanced Messaging on T-Mobile, which is a nice feature, but not one that I use much. Regardless, who knows what else is wrong with this phone with weird issues like this.
It's also troublesome that you guys are getting it. I ordered a new V20 via buyer's remorse (huge hassle) Anyway, fingers crossed super hard that the new one doesn't have the same issue!
Update: Surprise, surprise! Got a brand new V20 and the issue still persists! I'm at my wit's end, I have no idea what to do. Anyone have any other solutions? It seems to be happening intermittently on Nougat in general...I know the H918 hasn't gotten a system update yet, so I'm wondering if this 1) occurred previously on Verizon V20s, and if it did, then 2) did the system update fix it?
Trevnerdio, did you ever get a resolution to your text messaging issue with the stock messaging app.? Im currently experiencing the same issues with text messages getting lost when sent to me.

Hey Paulydm,
Sorry for the late reply. No dice, I've just given up and I'm using Textra as my main messaging app (which I quite like, actually) and my Advanced Messages (chats) from other T-Mobile devices comes in and goes out normally through the stock messaging app, it seems. Please let me know if you've found a solution! Still waiting on a system update...it's been a month a half.

I have the same issue receiving texts. Some I will receive and be in a conversation and all of a sudden stop getting replies then get one saying something that shows I have been missing a few texts. I had the LG G5 when this started in Nov 2016 and did everything the customer service rep at TMobile told me and nothing worked. I got the new LG V20 thinking it was my previous LG G5. Still happening. I have done everything including a factory reset and nothing works. TMobile said they would send me a new LG V20 even though I explained this one is brand new and the texting issue was happening on the G5 also. They sent a device and I went to pick it up only to find out it was a refurbished V20. I refused to take it because my current one is brand new. I am planning to call again and convince TMobile to let me trade in my brand new V20 for a new iPhone. I communicate 99% by text. Did anyone find a solution

I want to say THANK YOU!!! I downloaded Textra and it is working awesome!!!! Thank you thank you thank you
I have this issue on AT&T.
When talking to somebody, sometimes the texts end up going to the stock messenger instead of the messenger app im using. And sometimes people who try to send me texts, the text fails completely on their end and they cant send me any messages. Once i switched back to the stock messenger, all of those issues went away completely. Interesting stuff...

Hey, gonzo, sorry for the late reply. Textra works fine and is a bit friendlier to use and has a lot more features. While it's incredibly stupid and completely unacceptable that a system feature does not work properly, it's a minor thing to use something like Textra. I upgrade every 6ish months anyway, so I'm not letting it get to me. LG's been dropping the ball...they were doing better, but they seem to be slipping again. Hope you stuck with the V20! If not, sorry about your hassles!
Wow, totally didn't even read the latest responses haha glad your issue was fixed!
I also have experienced the same problem, been on the phone with T-Mobile and about 4 different TEC, nothing they tried fixed the problem, got really frustrated. I goggled and found this, I downloaded the Textra and I haven't had a problem since. You would think the TEC's would know to tell you to do this. I have been with T-Mobile for 20 years and been pleased, but this issue has put a sour taste in my mouth with T-Mobile now. My phone LG V-20 was brand new when it started, and they were wanting to replace with a re-furbished phone, I don't want someone else's problem... So glad I found this conversation. Thanks for posting.
Same issue. Stock LG G5. Android 7.0,
Tried everything. Even Textra. Nothing.
I get this problem using chompSMS, but my recipients are also receiving duplicates from me. Since switching to from cricket to tmo, I haven't had as many "lost" texts. Had the same issue on my G4. Wonder how many having the issue are rooted/custom ROM? Both my G4 and this V20 are rooted and stock based custom. Tried textra by developers suggestion, and still duplicated. Stock doesn't duplicate every text like chompSMS does, but maybe 20% do. This is bizarre. Wonder if it's an LG issue or root issue or ?
Im having this same issue with my lg-v 20. all my text seem to go through but i don't receive there text. I switched to a custom rom to see if that would fix the problem but so far no it sadly has not. It is a problem with the stock messenger app. I will give textra a try and see if that fixes my issue if not i might just change to a different phone in general. ill let you guys know what happens. Thanks
So I got a replacement v20 because my ffc stopped working, and once I switched to the replacement v20 I can no longer send texts to quite a few of my contacts. It says on my phone that it was unable to send the message. Is this more or less the same problem you all are facing?
The problem with not receiving text messages reliably on an LG phone running Android 7.0 Nougat is related to the text messaging app that LG created and loaded onto our phones as the default messaging app. I reported this issue to LG about a month ago after extensive testing and I've confirmed that many 3rd party messaging apps will work reliably. For instance and app like Textra will work reliably and offers much more functionality than the built in LG app.
I even went as far as to provided my testing details then send my phone in for warranty repair so that LG could have a closer look and work towards a resolution but all LG did was factory reset my phone and said that the phone worked fine. When I got it back I tested again and the issue remained. I firmly believe LG has no idea how to resolve this software issue and is ignoring it at this point and basically screwing their customers over. Luckily the solution is to ditch the LG messaging app and use any 3rd party messaging app instead.....but I would encourage anyone having this issue to hold LG to task and report it to them as this issue is a direct result of a poorly written application they created.
This is my first LG and it will be my last....never again!
I am getting something like this. People always get my texts but only today have i noticed that my phone is spamming me with old text messages. My buddy says "yeah i sent that text only one time and that was 2 days ago." His text said "hey man" and i have gotten the same text 30 times today. Now it just started the same behavior from another person. I had never gotten these people's message originally. But now it wont stop.

Unlocked S8: Not Receiving Text Messages - Why?

I need some help pinpointing an issue with my unlocked S8 (SM-G950U1) running Oreo (8.0) on Verizon Wireless.
While browsing the web and checking Facebook this afternoon I noticed my S8 dropping dropping from 4G to 3G, then eventually returning to 4G. I restarted my phone a few times, then after one of the restarts, I received two text messages at once. I thought it was a fluke, but I decided to contact Verizon to make sure they weren't having any network problems in my area. I forgot my Verizon password, so I had to request a verification code. I requested two codes, but I didn't receive them. I restarted my phone, then I received both codes. I eventually chatted with a Verizon Rep who claimed they were having no network issues in my area. I reset the network settings, cleared the system cache in recovery, and successfully received a few texts in safe mode. However, this happened a third time and the pattern was the same: Drop from 4G to 3G, return to 4G, restart the phone, receive text messages that were sent sometime prior to the restart. I rushed down to my local Verizon store and got a new SIM card just so I could rule that out as a possible problem. I'm trying to do everything I can before I do a factory rest. I really don't want to hassle with that.
I have been having a problem receiving notifications while my screen is off. This started happening after I received the following software update in early September. This issue has been documented a few other places as well, but I can't find anyone who is experiencing both issues, so I'm left to think the two issues are separate and not related.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. (And if you suggest a hardware problem with the radio, yes, I've thought about that, but I'm in denial about that possibility.)
I have a similar issue. I too have an unlocked S8 but on AT&T. I have a new sim and have factory reset my device recently and still have issues with notifications, but SMS send to be ok, it's mostly with Gmail, messaging apps (not SMS) and other notifications. I am in the latest firmware (CRH3). I it's a software issue personally.

Yeah, I'm certain the notification issue is related to the software. I just don't know if I can attribute the text message issue to software or hardware.

Cant send SMS... Sometimes?

I'm hoping somebody has experienced this before and found a fix and can help me out...
All day I've been struggling to send SMS messages... I'm on 11.0.1.1, magisk rooted, with RICE installed. Everything was working great but today when i woke up, i was unable to send SMS messages...
I'm receiving them, but sometimes they are delayed and i get a few at a time with nothing coming in again for a short time after that, but i've made no changes to my phone in the last 2 days. I've rebooted a few times between then and now (twice yesterday, just because), so i cant really understand why i would just randomly be unable to send text messages or why they are received in bursts like this?
I've gone in and reset my "Wi-Fi, Mobile & Bluetooth" settings from within the reset options, and this appears to fix the issue, but only for a minute or so and suddenly they stop sending again... I thought maybe its the tower, so i used my daughters phone to text my wife and that worked perfectly fine. Immediately before and after, mine wouldnt send.
Any ideas, links, or guidance that might help me figure this out?
Since there's been some updates and no responses to my thread, i wanted to revisit this and see if i'm still the only one on earth with this issue.
The issue seemed to have completely gone away on its own, no idea why or how... But a couple weeks ago i decided to install the update to 11.0.2.2 on my IN11AA. Ever since, my phone will randomly stop receiving SMS messages completely. I can still send, just cant receive. The only way to fix this is to reboot.
Anyone else with this issue? Anyone find a reason for this? A fix perhaps?

Seeming this issue doesn't seem to be widespread, could be a carrier side issue?
It's a shame we don't have dual boot capabilities because you could have switched to stock and checked.
Also try a secondary SIM from maybe someone in your household and send using that SIM and see what happens.
I know there are delays after rebooting, I do a lot of magisk module work and every reboot try sending notifications using SMS or some other methods and I get around 3 mins no send or receive but not at the length you do.

I just had the issue again yesterday. Wife and I started texting eachother at about 8am, except, i didnt receive any of her messages until 5:30pm when she got home and told me she had been texting me. I rebooted 3 times, which once usually resolves the issue but not this time. I had to go into the settings and reset my WiFi/Mobile/Bluetooth settings, then it worked immediately.
Because of the solutions, i wouldnt think its a sim issue, but im going to test it anyway. I've factory reset a few times in the past and i still get the issue. I've had the issue while rooted and not rooted. Four of us have phones, 3 are Samsung and then there's mine, and mine's the only one with the issue.

What SMS app are you using? I wonder if you have enabled RCS messaging the new Google style messaging? Because maybe it uses WiFi to download some of the SMS, and if your carrier doesn't support it maybe you only receive it when you are on WiFi.
Try on WiFi then try just on mobile data and see if you notice.
I attached a photo check the top setting. Google might be persisting your setting (if you are using Google messages)
Also why don't you and your wife try a simnswap next time you happen and you are both at home, if your wife doesn't receive it then it's sim/network related.

I'm using Google Messages, and yes i do have RCS enabled. I dont believe thats the case though because the messages that are blocked are sometimes just an "ok" message. I'm almost always on WiFi though too.
The primary issue with sim swapping with my wife is that we would need to swap sims for up to 2 weeks since sometimes I have no issues for 2 weeks, then i get the issue once or twice a day for three days. The worst part (for me anyway) is that her screen is SHATTERED on her phone (she's using a Note10+) and its hard to see anything, so i've been trying to get her to get a new phone. I think we might be FINALLY upgrading her (after 5 months) to an S21 Ultra, so maybe we'll give that a shot there.
I'm actually wondering if it has something to do with messages for web. I've noticed that the issue only really happens after using that, but.. It doesnt always happen after using messages for web, so it might just be a coincidence.
I'm pretty sure its not Google Messages, or RCS, and fairly certain its not messages for web, because i used to use Signal only, and i still had the issue a few times.

When you say "ok" are you just sending short messages or the suggested replies by Google?
I had problems with auto reply in notifications for a while.
Tbh I just use telegram or signal becuase they don't require being connected to the device directly when using the web/desktop versions.
Yeah swapping for 2 weeks isn't great!
Interesting you had this issue with signal too, sounds like Google cloud messaging (needed for any app push notifications and messaging) is in a standby mode.
You got naptime or servicely installed? Shame no one else is seeing this issue might be easier to diagnose
