I have used several WM phones before this, the two last were Atom and Atom Life. But this phone does not want to play ball with the USB extension cables I've been using all the time. First: No, the cables are all right: I can still sync my Atom Life without any problems. And I have used the original USB cable for the HD that comes with the box at the end (even though I've heard that syncing works just as well with a regular mini USB).
But neither a 3 m long extension cable (which is well below the 5 m USB limit) nor plugging it into a USB hub helps. Sometimes I can get a bit further with unticking the "advanced network" part of the USB to PC connection. But not allways. Has anybody here found a solution to that or even had the same problem?
Mine works fine on a Belkin 5 metre extension cable.
I can only sync with the cable that came with the phone. Other mini USB cables (ones that fit but are a different shape) only charge.

r u serious?! damn..!!! i've never tried it with the HD. my touch pro used to work perfectly with non-factory mini usb cable...
This happened to my HD.
Phone call to orange later and they insisted on replacing it under insurance.
All they wanted to check was whether the HD and PC would sync. I told them no and the response from the script that they have to work through, was that the phone is marked as "broke" and needs replacing.
In my case I suspect that the USB port may have been damaged when the car charger cable was pulled out accidently in the car with some force. Seems that they are a little delicate, especially with none HTC cables (i.e. without the odd shaped plug with only one corner truncated). I have read that non HTC ones fit a little less snug and can put stress on the board inside the phone when plugging / unplugging.

You hit that on the money. I see it as a design flaw as well as a scheme to get people to buy HTC-specific accessories. But you are right, generic cables with the different connector do fit loosely and can cause issues after time if you are not gentle with it. Also, the USB connector itself on the device and internally on the solder points is poorly designed. This doesn't help.
I can sync with any cable, but it seems to be to problems:
1. If the extension is too long, it will fail.
2. If it's run by more than one USB hub it will fail. The first hub is a Toshiba docking station with a one meter cable from the laptop. The second is a D-Link powered USB hub. No matter what cable I use then it won't sync. With the cable connected to the Toshiba docking I can sync both with a regular mini USB and the original cable. Strange thing is that it only works on one of the two the front USB connections and not on one of the four at the rear! Then again Windows isn't supposed to be logical, I guess...
Normal miniusb cable works perfectly for either charging and syncing.
I even had a 7m usb cable (5m and a 2m usb extending cable), worked perfectly for either charging and syncing (I need my phone to be next to my bed, and my PC is like a few meters away from my bed).
Seriously don't know how your HD refuses to work with a cable other than the stock HD USB cable.

are you using a custom ROM?
i used all sorts of cables, whatever happens to be lying around, infact i never use the stock one, as this is plugged it at a very inaccesable wall socket for mains charging!
generally my cables go through a hub, and then a 1m extension.
the reason i ask about the ROM is that i have flashed loads of different ROMS, and all worked fine, except one ROM (think it was topix 2.6), where it would only connect for a brief moment before auto-disconnecting. i suspect it was a 'bad flash' as they say, and so if you are using a custom ROM would suggest a re-flash. if not, you could consider a hard reset, or trying a different ROM (perhaps if it the stock ROM it has a 'bad flash' at the factory)

I tried 3 other cables and none of them work apart from to charge.
I'll see if it's an issue with using my hub.

I have this issue with a specific cable on vista64, the phone only charges, but if I connect it to a Ubuntu box, I can sync, share network etc.
I think M$ is the issue in that case.
Is there anyway we can use camera on Nook Hd+. As Nook HD or HD+ doesnt have an inbuilt camera. SO is there any app through which we can possibly use our laptop camera or any other, connecting it to the Nook via Bluetooth or USB or Wifi, thus, able to access camera on Nook.
In short, if we can use PC webcam as a camera on Nook by connecting it over USB or any. This will leave a huge room open for accessing great applications demanding the camera.

First possible thing is Air Cam Live Video. But this maybe have many disadvantages for you.
Second i recommend look to this external link
For third i can say that Toshiba Folio 100 can use external USB webcam, but Folio have USB port too. I'm not familiar Nook 30 pin connector pinouts, but i hope there can be used for USB host too.
Yeah and hardware possibility is using some WiFi cam / spycam. Like this one on ebay (made just quick search for item, not for best price/deal). Disadvantage is that same time you can not connect your HD+ to another wifi network.
Edit: My mistake. This cam have two modes, infrastructure mode connecting it over local WiFi network or straight mode connecting HD/HD+ directly to camera.
Ip can will turn your phone into a wifi c connected comets which you can look at on some apps from play store,

I've been working on this issue for about 2 weeks. One important question: Do you want a cam for security/surveillance/monitoring or for video conferencing/calls/Skype? The options for the former are much broader, but remember most security cams do not have voice capability. I'm in the video call camp.
If money is no object, I would think an IP cam with mic could do the trick, or possibly B/T, but since I'm looking for a cheaper solution and to have fun with this challenge, I'm going the USB route. For this purpose you need to make the HD plus become a USB Host just like your PC or Laptop. Not a problem, theoretically, since that capability is built into the Android OS on your device, but getting it to talk with a USB device, such as a camera, is another matter. Connecting it is the second challenge; there is no USB OTG cable (the "special" cable for USB Hosts) for the Nook. It would have a female USB connector on one end and Nook's (f**k**g) proprietary 30 pin male connector on the other, through which you'd connect your USB device. I've come up with a hardware workaround, but I'm waiting for a special connector coming on a slow boat from China. A side hardware problem is the lack of power coming into the USB Host (the Nook) and the USB Slave (the Cam), but utilizing a powered USB hub could solve it.
So, if the hardware problem is overcome, will it work? Video cam APKs are aplenty on Google Play, but I don't yet know if they will play (pun intended) well with the Nook's USB host adaptor set-up. I'll let you know. Total costs with a new cam will be less than $20; if you already have a USB cam (with built in mic), it'll be about $5. Nice.

First, you must use a USB OTG cable with a special female USB connector (it'll look conventional) on one end which will identify the device as a USB Host. Unfortunately, most connectors on the other end are male micro usbs, or 30 pin Apple connectors, not the Nook 30-pin. I bought one with the male micro USB plug. Now I'll need a female micro USB to female USB adaptor to connect it to the Nook.. That's the special adaptor coming from China (http://www.ebay.com/itm/271094375029?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649).
The configuration of the set-up is this:
Plug in to a/c outlet a powered USB hub (2.0)
Connect the primary cable of the hub (i.e., the one that would go into a PC/laptop) to the hub and to the USB female end of OTG cable
Plug the OTG micro male to the like-female end of the special adaptor
Plug USB cable from the Nook into the other end of the special adaptor then into the Nook
Plug USB device you want to use with the Nook into one of the ports of the USB hub.
If all goes well the Nook should identify the device, but you'll need drivers and maybe an apk to use it. Whether the drivers load automatically or not remains to be seen.
If I get to that point I'll let you know what happens from there...

It would be surprising if this works. USB OTG cables have 5 pins; they distinguish the host side from the peripheral side by shorting the fifth pin to either ground or +5V. But the Nook's USB cable ends in a 4-pin connector. There's no way to tell it to act as a host.
On the bright side, the Nook's kernel definitely contains support for host-side USB. It has drivers for mass-storage, HID (mouse, keryboard, etc.), serial, and video devices. To use these facilities, though, it would be necessary to wire up your own 30-pin connector. As far as I know, B&N has not made the pin-outs public.

I was operating on the premise that only the female end of the OTG cable required the 4-to-5 jumper. Alas, the male end also requires the same configuration. I could tackle modding the female USB end, but the 30-pin connector is another story. Thanks again to B&N for making a proprietary cable. Another smart move on its part -- limiting the inherent functionality of this device. It hasn't made an OTG cable and probably never will since it is cutting back on its Nook investment. They blew it, but that's another story...

Only one i dont want to do, this is cutting off this 30 pin plug at cable side. Its hard and over prized to buy new cable to my destination.

No hardware fix, but follow this link to use a software hack which requires CM10.1 for your HD+: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2307585 That should work.
Doesn't work because we need a camera app. Any ideas for that?
I was wondering if anyone is having similar issues with aftermarket cables.
I bought 2 cables that work fine in 2.0 for charging/data transfer.
When I put them into a 3.0 ports nothing happens, there is no prompt to access the phone, and the USB options do not appear on the phone.
I have downloaded the Samsung drivers, and tried 2 different PCs.
I have no issues using the provided Samsung cable.
Any ideas?
I haven't experienced this. Actually, I think the Samsung USB 3.0 cable that came with my phone was bad. When I used it, USB 3.0 would stay grayed out. I had another one for a portable hard drive and that one works fine with the phone. Maybe just try a different brand. These cables seem rather fragile.

I purchased a 9ft Amazon Basics USB 3.0 cable and all is well. Connecting through a USB 3.0 port, my device was immediately recognized, and I had no problem transferring data files to and from the device.
My only guess would have been to ensure that your PC's USB 3.0 drivers are installed in order for the ports to work properly. Since you're not having any issues with the stock cable, I'm not really sure.
I don't know if it'll make a difference in this case, but I have USB Debugging enabled.
I have all of the drivers update and USB debugging. Think I just got some shoddy cables.

I called Samsung and eventually after explaining what a micro USB 3.0 cable is and how it is supposed to work, and how it is not working, they finally gave me a place to send the cable and they will supposedly send me a replacement. I'm not holding my breath though. I think I would have had better luck addressing the envelope to "The Twilight Zone."

If your 3.0 charger charges fine but is not recognized when plugged into a port I'd check the the port drivers and make sure they are up to date. But first plug into all of your ports. It could be that not all of the ports on your lap/desk top are usb 3.0 friendly. And I've seen instances where if the device has not yet been recognized it will not pick up the device theough a usb 3.0 link. So maybe first get your note recognized by using a 2.0 connector then backdoor with the 3.0 and see what happens.
samsung test all of their cords before they leave manufacturing so getting a dud is very unlikely yet not impossible.
As for the aftermarket cords I normally stick to belkin. Best build quality for a fair price.

I have tried everything.
I plugged into 2.0 and the 3 options pop up to select a mode where 3.0 is grayed out. That menu closes when you unplug.
If you lock your phone while in this menu, you can change the port, unlock the phone and the menu is still there, but it will not allow me to select 3.0.
I have 2 3.0 ports on my laptop, 1 on the docking station, and 1 on my standalone.
None of them work with the aftermarket cable. I will take it as a loss as I really only need them for charging away from home.

That is indeed odd. Im not sure what to tell you. Hopefully someone will chime in and be of more assistance.
Try changing your network connections. Using usb3.0 puts on airplane mode. If u have wifi on or something it'll show greyed out. It might not be wifi but it's something similar. Saw the greyed out 3.0 the other day and changed a setting on my phone and it came back. Hope it helps.

I am having the same issue. I have 2 white usb 3.0 cables that I bought online from china via ebay. They were supposed to be USB 3.0 compatible and they look similar to the original stock cable.
When I use the stock cable w/ my usb3.0 port in rear of motherboard, the phone prompts me to enable USB 3.0 mode. When I use either generic cable, it will only function in USB 2.0 mode (I get no prompt for 3.0).

I am willing to sacrifice (cut open) one of my generic cables if anyone thinks they can help diagnose the exact cause
I am having issues finding an extra USB 3.0 cable that performs to the level of the one that came with my phone. (My OEM cable works great)
I think the issue is that the 3rd party cables use cheap, thin wire. They can put a micro USB 3.0 tip on it... but the thin wires can't carry the bandwidth.
This is most plainly noticeable by downloading an app that shows the current flow while charging. Try downloading "Galaxy Charging Current *Lite*" and charge your phone through various combinations of
cable (USB2, USB3, OEM, 3rd party)
receptacle (1A, 2A, OEM, 3rd Party),
USB port (USB2, USB3, motherboard, adaptor card)
...etc. Even wireless charging, if you're equipped.
(It should also be noted that the phone will throttle the current flow as it gets closer to full. You'll get higher flow at 30% than 76% or 96%... so keep this in mind as you try different configurations.)
I've found that I got the best current flow (1800mA) using the Samsung USB3 cable, connected to a powered USB3 hub's charging port (no data, just power). This would charge our 3200 mAH battery from 0 - 100% in about 2 hours. When I swapped in a cheap Amazon cable (CableMatters brand)... the current flow dropped to about 800mA... or 4 hours. I emailed CableMatters, and they confirmed that it's a design issue, and that the wires are thin. They were pretty plain about admitting it... and then told me to return the cables to Amazon.
I'm posting all of this useful information not only to be helpful... but also to ask for help. Has anyone found a suitable replacement for the OEM cable? I'm looking for a charging cable... I'm looking for thicker-gauge wires capable of sustaining high current flow.

If you are not getting 3.0 speeds then it's not a 3.0 cable. There are many fakes on ebay and amazon.
Only buy Amazon Basics or Samsung branded cables sold by Amazon OR Samsung.

I've actually tried this for fun just 2 days ago with this adapter, I'm usually using it for my Dell XPS 15:

And no, it won't work nor detect the adapter at all.
My guess is that the adapter is connected using USB 3.0 internally, which is not supported by the OnePlus Two.

Not necessarily, because quite a few USB Type C to Micro-USB B 2.0 adapters won't work with the OnePlus Two either.
To my knowledge only the original (overpriced) adapter and a Xiaomi one are actually working, so either them or the other manufacturers are differing from the standard USB Type C 2.0 pinout.
If you want to save yourself some hassle I'd say you should go for an Ethernet to Micro-USB B one and add the Xiaomi adapter to it.
A kernel with proper Ethernet-support is also needed, LordBoefflas Kernels include a kernel-module for this, you can enable it inside the "Boeffla-Config v2" app.
I've no idea if this will be of interest to any of you, especially those people who have yet to buy a 5t and are trying weigh up the pros and cons, but USB OTG is something I use all the time, so o it was one of the first things I tested when I got mine. So far I'm really pleased as everything I wanted to work does so. My last device, a Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, had very poor USB OTG implementation so this is great from my point of view. Maybe I'm behind the times and I had the last phone on the planet with that problem - if so, please delete this mods
First off, before you can use USB OTG, you need to head into settings, then advanced and check the OTG setting. It turns off after ten minutes so I created a link on my homepage using Nova launcher's activity widget menu.
*EDIT* As ny-hardcore has kindly pointed out below, you can also have an OTG quick toggle in notification area. This didn't work for me at first (or I was hitting the wrong thing), but now it does .
Tested and working:
USB card readers of various types, including micro USB readers, with the help of a USB C to Micro USB adapter (5 for £4 on eBay!). The only one that didn't work is a proprietary Samsung multi card reader that also has a full sized USB output and HDMI out too. This isn't very surprising of course, but they're to be avoided if you see one on eBay and assume it's a generic adapter.
80 GB iPod hard drive in a cheap enclosure bought via Amazon.
1 TB 2.5" Western Digital HDD - that's right, no USB hub required, just plug it straight in. The only other portable device I've owned could power it was a Samsung tablet.
2 mega pixel boroscope (using USB Camera app in Play Store) . So useful for finding slow water leaks under the floor or peering down a spark plug hole into a cylinder!!
Micro USB DVB TV dongle, via adapter.
Keyboards and mice via an OTG adapter, including a combination media keyboard with built in trackball mouse (this usually doesn't work on my phones for some reason). The UK keyboard layout is supported via settings so you can have a £ key - woohoo!
Other phones! I plugged my old phone in and discovered I could mount it in MTP mode and then browse its contents from the built in file explorer. For what it's worth, the Oneplus even charges the device that's connected to it.
When you need to eject the device there's a button that appears in the notification area. Sometimes this gets obscured, so swipe down a second time and the 'eject' will appear.
I haven't tried any game controllers yet, but so far the support has been so comprehensive I don't see why there would be a problem.
In the attached photo, the only thing that doesn't work is the black coloured multi purpose card reader on the far right.
In quick toggles you can add an otg switch.
You don't have to go in settings that way to enable otg.

Thanks, for some reason that just didn't work for me unless I went into settings/advanced as well. I can't recall which firmware I was on at the time and I haven't tried since The quick toggles are so far away for my little hands too (please Oneplus add a Xiaomi one handed mode - in fact, make it EXACTLY like Xiaomi devices).
LOL, typical, now it does work for me! I was probably pressing flight mode by mistake or something.
Just FYI, I've tried the following USB DACs with an OTG cable on my 5T and they appear to work:
- Fiio E17
- Meridian Explorer (v1)
- Audioquest Dragonfly (v1)
I just discovered my old Saitek X35/X36 throttle/joystick combo works too! That's a first for one of my Android devices too. Now I need something fun to test it with

Sorry, I haven't tried. I'm still fully stock for now, including the recovery.
Has anyone gotten USB sound cards to work *for recording*.
Like I have a Terratec Aureon USB MkII and would like to livestream my DJ sets to Facebook via the FB app, by hooking up the line-out on my decks to the line-in on a soundcard hooked up to my phone and have the streamed video use the soundcard instead of the internal mic which sounds rubbish.
Edit: Tried it, and yes it works, but you have to hook up to the mic port, not the line in, and this doesn't seem like a great idea. Any idea how to change it?
Edit2: Scratch that, phone rebooted itself during a longer test

That would be so cool if you can get it working. Wonder if it's the phone or the Terratec? I have NO experience in that area. Good luck! How much power does it draw? Would a powered USB hub in the mix help?

What I really need is a super cheap low power USB line-in of some sort. Though after further testing, FB live streaming is crap, with low quality audio and video in all the configurations I tried (Android app, Win10+Firefox, Win10 app) so I'm probably going to abandon this plan and try a different platform like Youtube or something.
Just cant get otg to work in my device, I am on OOS 4.7.5, rooted with SuperSu, tried a type c to micro USB adapter, also a type c to USB 3.0 adapter, I have enabled the otg option in advanced settings before plugging in the devices, I don't know whether its the phone or the adapter I use, what kind of adapter did you buy, is it a type c 3.1 to micro USB 2.0/ USB 3.0, could you provide me with a name of the adapter.

I have the following USB OTG adapters.
2 X micro USB to full sized USB (the long type with a two inch cable).
1 X mini micro USB adapter that is tiny.
1 X micro USB adapter (bigger than above)
1 X USB C OTG adapter with micro SD card reader built in.
All of the above work. In the case of the micro USB OTG adapters, I'm using a USB C to Micro USB adapter (they're tiny, about 2 CM long).
In short, every USB OTG adapter I've put in it works. All are unbranded, generic adapters that I've bought from Amazon or eBay. I've never had to do anything more than enable OTG in settings.
Could it be something to do with the ROM you're using?
In the attached photo, the ones with a yellow Mark are micro USB OTG adapters. The one with a red mark is a USB C multi card reader (built in USB OTG). The one with a blue mark is a USB C to Micro USB adapter.

Sadly what you're doing is way beyond anything I've tried. I'm happy when I can get card readers and stuff to work
I vaguely recall reading about specifications for the older micro USB ports on phones and what type of power output they supported - not all were equal. For example, there were a bunch of Samsung phones and tablets that could power hard drives without needing a powered USB hub inline. Similarly, some could power an MHL connection to a TV without the adapter being plugged into a charger like most phones that supported MHL had to. I've forgotten the name for these specs, but presumably USB C is exactly the same and it'll be online somewhere. No idea what your Terratec draws or if that could be the problem - if our phones can spin a 1 TB hard drive then perhaps it's not an issue, I was just clutching at straws.

I am on official OOS 4.7.5 rooted with supersu, on which rom are you, is it 4.7.4, are you rooted, are you using any custom kernel.

4.7.4 Stock. Stock recovery too (not rooted either).
USB OTG worked on stock 4.7.2 as well.
Working fine for me, stock, custom roms etc. Use a cableconnection usb/otg cable 6" in length. Just enable OTG in the swipe down, plus USB stick in...no problems.
I gave up on using the phone for this because the audio quality via the FB app is terrible anyway, so I nicked my GF's Windows laptop and started using OBS for streaming instead.
Power aside, it's awesome that an external sound card will work (kinda) for recording though!.

On which ROM version are you on, is OOS 4.7.5 or another version of OOS or some other ROMs.
