I'm having trouble connecting my N9005 to my pc using Windows8. The problem is it does not recognize the phone's storage and is not able to mount it.
I've tried installing Samsung Universal USB Drivers to no avail.
My laptop only has USB2 ports and if I'm correct N9005 utilizes USB v3. Could it be the cause?
I also have the same problem in Ubuntu.
I also tried Samsung Kies and it doesn't work either.
Upon connecting, my PC recognizes that the phone's been connected but it's not able to mount the storage.

The Note 3 mounts as an MTP drive. Make sure you have it selected under the drive connection settings on your phone.
In some cases enabling USB Debugging in Developer Settings would allow for the USB to mount.

By any chance do you have any unknown devices listed in the Computer Management of your computer?

I don't know what really happened but this last time I connected the device, it mounted normally!
But there's still an unknown Mass Storage Controller in my Device Manager.
unable to connect
Hi,
Perhaps W8 assigned the wrong driver...or a bad / damaged usb cable(?)
Try a system restore to an earlier date
I allways connect my mobile device thru wifi and it's fine
Cheers,
USB3 is backwards compatible with USB2, don't worry about that.
Did you try another cable? You can use any microUSB 2.0 cable, it fits into the right side of the USB port. (the small left bit is the USB3 part.)
Did you unlock the screen when you connect the phone? It can't mount the storage, if you use a lockscreen setting other than none or swipe, until you unlock the screen.

Hello ShadowLea,
I'm having the same problem on my Samsung Note 3 SM-N9005: "USB device not recognized One of the usb devices connected to this computer has malfunctioned...." when I connect it to my USB3 on my laptop.
I tried the toothpick solution (lifting the tongue of the USB connector on my phone), I tried powering down the Laptop and waiting for 30 seconds to fullly discharge the capacitors, I tried changing 3 different USB cables. I tried different USB ports on Laptop (on USB3 I reiceve the error on the remaining 2 USB2 ports the error does not appear but the phone is not seen by Kies nor Odin.
BTW, FYI, the phone is also having battery charging issues: it only charges if pluggged into the laptop and won't charge if connected to the mains via wall charger (tried 3 different chargers, cables, mains sockets: all work with other devices).
I'm trying to flash a new ROM to try to fix the battery chargin problem but if Odin can't recognize the device...
Also, the dial pad code *#7284# which should give access to the Phone Utility (USB settings) is not working - all other dial pad codes work.

Nope, X-Note is fine and I'm using v16 right now without problems.
What I think fixed my problem was using a screwdriver on the usb port on the phone.
I tightened the screws a little bit and it was fine after that.

which screws are you talking about btw?
ive found countless times its a duff or cheap micro USB cable.
if you have been using the genuine Samsung one then it may be faulty. But try another cable.
does any other phone connect ok with the same cable?:good:

I want to flash roms to my note3, since yesterday i tried everything. problem is i cant use my usb cables to transfer data to my phone. device is not recognized by computers. i tried 5-6 different usb cables some of them work with other devices, tried to remove drivers and reinstall them, tried mac, linux, windows 8.1 device is not recognized. even in download mode when i plug usb cable it charges only. i crawled through google found some kernel related problems which i cant do anything about it without working usb cable, i think my usb port might be broken somehow.i don't wanna buy usb port flex cable if there are any other solutions.

MicroUSB connector may be damaged. You should be able to use adapter to connect the MicroSDHC card to a PC, copy the new ROM etc. to the card and install from there.

I think that he would not be able to install a new ROM from the card, as he would need a custom recovery that in this case can't be installed, because the phone is not detected by the computer.

Glad you were able to replace the USB port on the phone. regarding being able to do the first install of a rom without a PC, if you can get root (in the case of an AT&T Note3, with Towelroot), then I believe you can use MobileODIN to install ROMs without a PC.
I had a different phone, a Samsung Galaxy S with a damaged USB port with no data connectivity that a repair shop was unable to repair it.
Have a note 4 on a custom rom- android kitkat. Was working fine, until i wiped data/cache a few times in TWRP recovery to do a clean install of the rom. Phone restarted without an OS, and then i couldn't get pass the boot logo screen. Couldn't flash any rom in recovery. So i did a restore thru TWRP from a backup. So now the phone boots, but it pc won't recognize it. Everytime i plug it, I get "One of the USB devices attached to your computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it". Under device manager, I get "Unknown USB Device (device descriptor request failed)".
Things I have tried:
-Uninstalled usb drivers and let windows reinstall,
-at least 5 different usb cables
-at least 3 different Samsung oem usb cables
-other usb ports on the PC
-3 different pc (all with same- so im guessing its a problem with the phone)
-physically tried to push up the usb port on the phone- bad connection (someone recommended on google search)
- even when as far to reinstall windows OS
-*#0808# and set it to AP, MTP + ADB
-yes usb debugging is enabled
-download mode (odin does not see the phone, so cannot flash stock/custom rom
-diferent versions of odin
-different version of Samsung usb drivers
-have other samsung phones (note 5, and s6) and windows recognize those.
-phone does charge thru usb
need to get phone working again
-
Download stock rom from sammobile and flash it via odin.
Or else, flash the cf auto root file via odin, this reset all partitions.

Sorry, my bad.
So, the author can try to repair partitions via twrp.
Go to wipe/advanced wipe and then select "Repair or change file system".
Select the partitions and repair them.

Honestly man search my username ziggsta2 I had the same issue I had to buy another note 4 and even this used phone I got off eBay has the same problem when I wiggled the micro USB cord up and down I got it to connect, I don't suggest you doing this, but what might work is taking a very small piece of plastic and cleaning out your USB port on your phone, I believe these ports go bad after awhile as I have encountered this twice on two separate devices maybe you have a different issue but theres my two cents

i have tried. at this point i think it's hardware failure with the usb port. Stupid buying those cheap usb cables probably damaged the port because it seems to require a little more force than samsung cable. Planning ordering one and replacing. hopefully i don't do more damage. Had this phone for a long time and miss flashing roms on it.
i have still not fixed this problem....lol. had a new phone and been in drawer. did replace the usb port but it wasn't the problem. would like some solutions if anyone can help.

Replace the battery
Hi XDA members. I need your assistance.
My phone has been acting up lately. Plugged in to my laptop using the type C cable that came together with the phone and the message USB device not recognized pop-ed up. Tried re-updating the drivers @ Device Manager, but still, the problem persist. Tried changing laptop and still, the problem persist!
Before this, I can easily transfer my stuffs from my lappy to my phone and vice versa. But now, even the status bar menu option to choose "Charging/Transfer file/etc" isn't appearing..
@ Device Manager, under the Universal Serial Bus controllers tab, it's written there "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) .
My mi a1 is rooted and is on Jan update btw. Wanted to unroot & flash stock fastboot image to update to Feb update, but if I can't even connect to the pic, how am I suppose to use the MiFlash Tool?
Please help.. Feeling so restless now :crying:
Edit : Tried every method I've read in the internet, from updating drivers, unplugging power source, uninstall and re-install drivers. The only thing that I have not tried is changing cable. If it works after using a new cable, then please kindly ignore this thread/remove it please moderator. At the same time, wondering if root process has got anything to do with this..
Edit : Found the issue. It is the cable all along! Changed to a new cable and everything works fine.
Just had the exact same issue here, found your post, changed cables and everything is fine again. Thanks
Same issue with Mi A1
Hi,
I'm facing the same issue. My Mi A1 is not recognied on laptop running Windows 7 64-bit. Earlier it used to work without any problem.
My Mi A1 is running on Android 9 with Sept 2019 updates and it is not rooted.
I've tried changing cable and with developer options on and off. Nothing working.
Any suggestions to overcome this issue.
Best,
1. it happens when you had faulty cable.
2. your phone's usb port is faulty
first replace your cable if problem persist clean your phone's usb port and if both not worked repalce your phone's usb charging port
I'm happy that you already solved the issue, but for future reference:
1) If it has already worked on that PC, probably the cable is not a data cable but a charge-only cable (~faulty USB cable, but not really)
2) If it has never worked it's possibile that is a driver problem, use this tool to install ADB, Fastboot and Drivers: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
3) Unlikely, but possible, you entered the network Diagnostic Mode. Just turn off debug/restart the phone.
i have the same issue. I also tested on other PCs. I have laptop with w7 x64, it also doesn't work on w10 x64 too. When i connect A1 to pc, nothing happens in the device manager. The phone is just charging. I have debugging as on and default configuration usb as transfer files. Version os - 10.0.0.12 with unlocked bootloader and root.
The cable is good because in the previous month it worked on it. Please help me with this.
I have same problem. My phone memory is full and I have to transfer files to free it up. Some one please help. I wonder if this has to do with the security update done recently.

Check your socket - usbc, I had a damaged socket, I gave it back for warranty and changed it. I was just charging the battery.
Wysłane z mojego Mi A1 przy użyciu Tapatalka
How about hard resetting the device, will it work
This must be a generic flaw with the Mi A1 as mine is doing exactly the same. I suspect it's the USB-C port itself as it's got steadily worse over the months. I have an Outlook task to remind me to backup my phone using FreeFileSync. Everything is backed up anyway to the cloud but I do like to keep a copy of the high resolution photos as Google reduces quality with the free unlimited photo storage option.
It's charging fine so not too worried. Just need a different way to transfer the photos off the phone. I do have access to a business OneDrive account.
Working in IT, I'm not the world's biggest fan of the USB-C port. It's not as robust as the old USB-A port.

You should try to go to fastboot and connect it since it loads low level drivers. Have you read the linked post and tried the steps?

I am having the same problem: no mtp, no adb, no fastboot, no otg
The phone charges with dash without any problems. I already tried 3 different computers (win 10 and Linux mint). Cant think of anything else than a Hardware issue of my USB Port.
My biggest problem is not getting adb, so i can't install twrp at the moment.
Are there any recommendations for me?

I'm not really sure, whether my port is broken or not. Shortly after I posted here, I found out, that I missed the Standard USB-Protocol-Setting in developer options (it was checked as charge). So I changed it and voila, USB worked!
But then I tried to install twrp (which was successful at first, but seems to be overwritten again by stock recovery) and now I can't get my device to connect again. I tried to disconnect, connect with other PCs, change the usb-debugging and standard usb-protocoll, connect in fastboot-mode, nothing works.

It's me again, I solved my problem!
When I tried to connect yesterday I noticed that my phone always charged and then immediately stopped charging again. It was charged to ~80% and didn't go any further. So I thought maybe the battery calibration is faulty, which can happen when you never fully charge. So I emptied the battery, charged it while phone off and tadaaa everything works.
It seems my phone interrupted the usb connection because it tried to charge my phone over 80% and the controller stopped it.
